LEYENDA DEL HUASCARAN Y EL HUANDOY

Hace muchos años, una poderosa tribu se asentaba en las faldas de la cordillera. Era gobernada por un cacique benévolo.

El cacique deseaba que su hija Huandi se casara con un monarca del reino vecino, pero la princesa mantenía amores secretos con Huáscar, uno de los másapuestos soldados de la guardia.

Una noche, la princesa fue aencontrarse con su galán, pero fue descubierta por uno de los servidores, que dio parte de este hecho a su señor.

Encolerizado el monarca, ordenó que fuera llevada ante él.

- Te prohíbo que ames a este hombre. Nunca más volverás a verlo – le dijo.

Los dos jóvenes decidieron salvar su amor y se fugaron. Pero pocos días después, fueron aprehendidos y llevados ante la presencia del cacique, de cuyos labios escucharon el castigo.

- ¡Átenlos a la cumbre más alta! – exclamó – No merecen mi perdón.

La princesa y su amado fueron atados frente a frente, en unas rocas que se encontraban en las cumbres más altas. Ahí sólo recibieron la inclemencia del frío y la nieve.

El sufrimiento les hizo derramar lágrimas en abundancia. Pero un día, el dios de los Huaylas se compadeció de ellos y los convirtió en dos soberbios nevados, que se levantaron desafiantes por encimas de las cordilleras.

La bella princesa Huandi quedó transformada en el Huandoy. Y el apuesto joven, en el Huacharan. Las lágrimas de los jóvenes dieron origen a numerosos torrentes que formaron hermosas lagunas, como la de Llanganuco, que se extiende a los pies de la cumbre más alta del Perú.

Y allí permanecerán siempre, como un eterno símbolo de amor imposible.

HUASCARAN AND HUANDOY LEGEND

Many years ago, a powerful tribe settled in the foothills of the Andes. It was ruled by a benevolent cacique.

The chief Huandi wanted her daughter to marry a monarch of a neighboring kingdom, but the princess kept secret loves to Huascar, one of the most handsome guardsmen.

One night, the princess went to meet her lover, but was discovered by one of the servants, who gave part of this to his master.

The two girls decided to save his love and eloped. But a few days later, they were arrested and brought before the presence of the chief, from whose lips listened punishment.

The princess and her lover were tied face to face in the rocks that were in the highest peaks. There they received only inclement cold and snow.

Suffering made them shed tears in abundance. But one day, the god of the Huaylas took pity on them and turned them into two snowy proud, who rose challenging for enzymes of the Cordilleras.

The beautiful princess Huandi it was transformed into the Huandoy. And the handsome young man in Huacharan. Tears of youth gave rise to numerous streams which formed beautiful lakes, like LLanganuco, which extends the foot of the highest peak in Peru.

And there will always remain as an eternal symbol of love impossible.
