SoI highlight both events here. I want to thank the outstanding cadets that make our squad-ron one of the best in the Wing; the parents whose dedication is unbridled; and our Com-mander and senior staff who make it all happen. 1st Lt James Kalemis

    WOODSTOCK MAYOR VISITS OUR SQUADRON

    By Major Rhonda Anderson

Mayor Dr. Brain Sager was a welcome guest for our promo-tion and awards meeting this past month. He took the time to

great each cadet and senior member and awarded C/2nd LtMedinas Mitchell.

C/Capt Mangano and C/CMSgt J Hendler were also privi-leged to receive awards from the Mayor. C/Mangano re-ceived the AF Award for Outstanding Officer of the year for2005. C/Hendler received the AF Sgt Assoc Award for thebest NCO 2005. These cadets were notified of their awards atthe December awards banquet, and receive these medals/ribbons/certificates as a follow up. The ribbons may be wornon the CAP uniform.

Mayor Sager is also an instructor of Animal Science at

McHenry County College and very well traveled around theworld. He is an advocate of youth programs; he established 4-H programs in Costa Rica.

It was an honor to host the mayor and to have him present some of our most prestigious awards. Keep up the great work ca-dets. We might have the Mayor return for your hard earned award.

These servicemen lawn ornaments were spotted during theDick Tracy Parade in Woodstock. Note how gallant andvigilant they stand. The fine Army serviceman, the Sailor, and the Airman. But please note that the Marine is sleepingin the weeds

    By Major Ken Anderson

Actually, it is all a matter of perspective and interpre-tation. Understandably, not having had former mili-tary experience and contact with America's finestfighting force, you misinterpreted what you saw. TheMarine in question is in the fully prone recon sniperposition, covering the rear, locked and loaded on theenemy trying to sneak up behind the others. Beingconstantly on the alert, this fine Marine was aware ofthe enemy movement and dropped into fighting posi-tion before the others had even become aware therewas eminent danger. While they are busy waving

their flags and smiling for the cameras, the Marine is busysaving their rears. Once again, I am proud of my Marinebrothers in arms. Semper Fi.

By Major Ken Anderson, with tongue firmly in cheek.

Kokomo, IN It was with extreme sorrow that Maj. KenAnderson and Lt. James Kalemis recently came to the con-

clusion of their exciting week-long tour of duty with ap-proximately 30 other attendees at the Great Lakes RegionalStaff College held at Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana. Ma-jor Anderson, proving that [former] Marines do, in fact, havevery little sense, attended the college as both instructor andstudent. Lt. Kalemis, taking the typically easiest route aswould be expected of him, merely attended as a lowly stu-dent. Regional Staff College is offered as a series of titillatingtraining seminars for field grade officers in preparation forpossible Wing, Regional, and Natonal level command re-sponsibilities.

During RSC, attendees sit in rapt attention through hours ofstimulating training courses on a number of high-level mili-tary topics appropriate to high-level command. Topics in-clude Human Resources, Finance, Legal, Aerospace Educa-tion, Cadet Programs, Leadership, Communication, and AFLiaison Organization, to name a few. Clearly the highlight ofthe seminar series presented during the week were TotalQuality Management and Basic Emergency Services, taughtby Majors Ken and Rhonda Anderson of MCCS, respec-tively.

Additional assignments ex-tended class time each dayinto early evening as a series

of breakout working sessionsdealing with problem solv-ing, planning, articles, speechpreparation, and the infa-mous telling of war sto-ries. Extra time spent onhomework assigned eachevening provided attendees with the sleep deprivation ex-perience necessary to set up the challenge of learning anddecision-making while unconscious. The highlight extracur-ricular activity of the college was member and staff atten-dance at an indoor circus in Peru, IN. Before the end of the

evening, Major Anderson and Lt. Kalemis were envisioningthemselves as part of the seven-person high wire pyramidact. Rumor has it that they may return next year and try toweasel in on the act.

Majors Anderson and Lt. Kalemis established friendships, contacts of interest, and brought home several interestingthoughts as a result of having attended the college. Be onyour toes at MCCS because theyve come back with brainsstocked full of knowledge that they are anxious to share withyou as soon as they wake up.

For our Aerospace Educationclasses the past few months we havebeen working on building a card-stock model of the Saturn V rocket.

The Saturn V rocket was used forthe Apollo and Skylab programs.NASA launched 13 Saturn V rock-ets between 1967 and 1973, with

no loss of payload. While buildingthe rocket we learned about thedifferent stages of the rocket andhow it all fit together.

Next Aerospace Education project, the Model Rocketry program!

We are to be the host of the group 22 van which has just been delivered to us. It is a 15 pack van that will obviously hold mostof us on future trips. We are very fortunate to have been entrusted with this terrific corporate asset. With privilege, comes

responsibility. A 15 pack van requires special attention to driving.

Most of our senior members have already processed the paperwork and have a Corporate driving permit, others will need to doso. I am requiring one more step...seniors will need to take a short training module and a post quiz. We want to be doublysure that our most precious assets, our people, are safe at all times. A small formality, for big rewards.

Now for the really bad news, well sort of. We have been asked to vacate the armory by 31 August. This is no fault of our ownand we are not the only unit faced with finding a new meeting location. Most squadrons in Illinois armories have been asked tofind new quarters. The Army Guard is supporting the Iraqi war and most of their soldiers are deployed. We are certainlygrateful for what they are doing for our country and this makes our disappointment in loosing our wonderful facilities easier toswallow. They no longer have the personnel to provide security for our use and they need our storage space for their own use.

Upon receiving this daunting news, I

informed the senior membership, andwe have all been pulling together tolocate an appropriate facility. We haveconsidered some local churches, schools, and government facilities. Allof these locations have their plussesand minuses. The best offer, and theone we will probably utilize, is fromOne Zero Charlie, Galt Airport. Theywant us to come, and for a very mini-mal fee, they are making available to usa 50 x 50 hanger with electric/heating/restroom. There is no doubtthe facility offers a lot...especially sincewe would own the key. We couldenter at will, host SAREX activities, meet the pilots who call Galt theirhome, etc. We are honored that the

Airport Owners, Mr. Michael Stanard and Mr. Ivan Djurin, with Carolyn Hendler, General Manager, are making this opportu-nity available to us. They are putting a lot of faith in us; we will not let them down!

There is a down side. Most furniture belongs to the armory and we will need tables, chairs, TV, VCR/DVD, and a whiteboard, just to name a few necessary items.

Keep your eyes and ears open for the final determination. Also, if you, your parents, your parents company, your neighbors, anybody, can assist with any of the furniture needs, let us know! I have already begun writing grants and will mail them whenwe make a definite decision.

We are looking at charging a monthly dues, at the most it would be $5.00 per person up to $10.00 per family. We will try tokeep any costs to a bare minimum, even none if we can work it out. The advantage of the dues: they would pay for the facility, they could off-set gas costs rather than pay per trip, and if we dont use the fuel money we could provide ribbons without col-lecting from you for each promotion . All this and more, yet to be determined.

Hey, how about those encampment cadets?
