Personal Background

Michigan State University– Major: Chemical Engineering– 3rd year– Expected Graduation: May 2018

First Co-op term with Marathon PetroleumActivities

Projects

Alky Coalescing Media

Alky Caustic Wash Steam Exchanger

Nitrogen Pressure Study

Minor Projects

Page 5: Megan Macciomei Final Presentation

5

Alky Coalescing Media

Purpose:– Install coalescing media in the acid settlers in the alkylation unit

Background:– Current acid settlers do not effectively separate the sulfuric acid and

hydrocarbon

– Coalescing media is designed to distribute the emulsion

– Inability to effectively separate within the settlers results in acid carryover

– Downstream corrosion

Page 6: Megan Macciomei Final Presentation

6

Alky Coalescing Media

Actions:– Provide justification

– Data from other refineries

– Projected improvements• Estimated 87% reduction in acid

carryover

– Economic evaluation• Acid Savings ($18,500/year)

• Caustic Savings ($25,300/year)

– Evaluate alternatives

– Collaboration with Stratco

– Completed ER

– Approved project charter

7

Alky Coalescing Media

Moving forward:– Project DSP in development with

Engineering for 2018 implementation upon approval

Takeaways:– Economic evaluation

– Reliability justification

• Acid carryover within the unit

– Seek knowledgeMedia assembled outside the unit

8

Alky Caustic Wash Steam Exchanger

Purpose:– Maintain a minimum of 120°F before the DIB Caustic Wash on the Alkylation

unit to effectively neutralize sulfuric acid and caustic

Background:– Caustic heated with alkylate in 9E37A/B

– Unable to currently reach the 120°F in the winter months (higher RVP)

– Insufficient heating leads to acid carryover

– Contributes to downstream corrosion, DIB feed line failure

Page 9: Megan Macciomei Final Presentation

9

Alky Caustic Wash Steam Exchanger

Actions:– Compile justification– Economic evaluation

• 2014 DIB Feed Line Failure• Lost Opportunity: $508,657

– Evaluation of alternatives– Exchanger sizing and design

• Process design technologist

– Review tie-in points– Collaboration with Stratco– Completed ER– Approved project charter

Alky Caustic Wash Steam Exchanger

Moving forward:– Project DSP in development with Engineering for 2018 implementation if approved

Takeaways:– Established relationship with Stratco

– Communication with Tech Service, Engineering, Operations, etc.

– Develop critical thinking and technical knowledge

– Understanding the unit

Both Projects:– Upon approval, there is an estimated improvement in reliability and acid/caustic savings.

Nitrogen Pressure Supply Study

Purpose:– Evaluate the current nitrogen supply in Melvindale and Complex 2

Background:– Study meets requirements of Hazop recommendation R20141768-002

– Critical Nitrogen Pressure Needs:

• Complex 2 oxygen skids on each SRU Thermal Reactor

• Melvindale ethanol unloading pump

• Melvindale pentane loading arms

– Pressure reducing regulator in Complex 5 before Melvindale Tank Farm

Nitrogen Pressure Supply Study

Results:– Issued memo that satisfies Conceptual DSP for project (EJN 14-107)

Future Actions/Recommendations– Replace reducing regulator with back-pressure regulator– Study on upstream portion of East Plant nitrogen– Flow/Pressure indication to DCS – improved troubleshooting

Takeaways– Experience with Operations– Best ways to present data and information– Understanding pressure regulators and their purpose
