JESÚS ES LA PALABRA VIVA

Quizás ustedes no esperen que se hable de cosas negativas en Navidad; pero una mirada al mundo nos dice que mu-chas cosas no andan bien. La mayoría de las veces las rela-ciones entre las personas se estropean porque la gente no cumple su palabra. Esto crea conflicto y división que, a me-dida que va escalando y se va enredando más y más, pue-de resultar en conflictos familiares, laborales, e incluso en guerras; y justamente hoy, día de Navidad, queremos ha-blar de paz.

Mi mamá solía decir que una vez que se ha dado la pala-bra, uno no se puede volver atrás. Es como entregar el pro-pio honor. Sin ser promesas, un ofrecimiento, una invitación, una seguridad, no se retiran. No necesitamos firmar un con-trato para saber eso. La palabra dada es importantísima: nos ata y nos obliga; sin embargo, hoy día, muchas perso-nas no se sienten atadas ni obligadas por sus propias pala-bras. Se promete fidelidad en el matrimonio y luego se rom-pe; se ofrecen ciertas cosas en el trabajo, y luego no se cumple; se les presentan a los hijos las normas de la casa y luego algunos propios padres las incumplen.

Ese no es el caso con Dios. Él tiene solo una palabra y no la va a cambiar ni a retirar. La Palabra de Dios hecha carne es la mejor noticia que podemos tener y la que podemos creer. La palabra de Dios es Jesús y es un constante sí que no se retira; no deja sus promesas sin cumplir, no miente. La Palabra viva que es Jesús, que nace hoy, puede hacer buenas todas las palabras. La palabra de Dios es fidelidad, no se cambia de un día para otro; es buena noticia, por-que promete la salvación.

¿Qué es la salvación para nosotros? Alguna vez alguien me contaba que se había salvado de un grave accidente. Muy impresionante y muy fuerte, pero no tanto como la salvación que trae la Palabra de Dios que supone sanación de todo lo que nos ata, de todas nuestras mentiras y las mentiras de los demás. Es la mejor noticia, la que hace to-das las cosas nuevas y de la que podemos estar seguros —de la única de la que nos podemos fiar en este mundo—. Esto es, en realidad, lo que celebramos en Navidad, la veni-da al mundo de un Dios encarnado que es siempre un sí. Él es nuestra salvación y nuestra única posibilidad de paz. .

Para la reflexión ¿Cómo cumplo la palabra dada? ¿Alguien me ha fallado últimamente luego de darme su palabra? ¿De qué maneras siento que la Palabra de Dios, Jesús mismo, nunca me falla?

JESUS IS THE LIVING WORD

You might not expect any negative talk on Christmas day; and yet, a brief look at the world indicates that things are not going well. Most of the time relationships among people might break down because people don’t keep their promis-es. This creates conflict and division that, as they escalate and become more and more entangled, can result in family break down, work conflicts, or even in war; and on Christ-mas day, we really want to talk about peace.

My mom used to say that once you have given your word, you cannot take it back. It is equivalent to surrendering your own honor. Even an offer, an invitation, an affirmation, which are not strictly promises, cannot be withdrawn. We don’t need to sign a contract for this. The word given is ex-tremely important and binding; and yet, we see today that many people do not feel tied by their own words. Faithful-ness is promised in marriage and then easily broken; assur-ances are made at work and then not fulfilled; children are presented with family rules and at times even the parents break them.

That is not the case with God. God has just one word that he will never change or withdraw. The Word of God made flesh is the best news we could have and the only one we can fully believe. The Word of God is Jesus and it is a constant yes which never withdraws; never leaves a promised unful-filled, never lies. The living Word that is Jesus born today can make all our words good. The Word of God is faithfulness, it does not change from one day to the next. It is good news promising salvation.

What does salvation mean for us? Someone told me once that her life was saved in a serious accident. It was impres-sive and strong and yet, not half as impressive and strong as the salvation brought about by the Word of God, which im-plies salvation from everything that ties us down, from all our lies and the lies of others. It is the best news, the one that makes all things new and the only one of which we can be sure—the only one we can fully trust. That is, truly, what we celebrate at Christmas, the coming to the world of an incar-nate God who is always a yes. He is our salvation and he is our only chance for peace life.

For Reflection How do I fulfill the Word I give? Has someone recently failed me after giving me his or her word? In which ways do I feel the Word of God, Jesus himself, who never fails me?

Navidad… una Realidad Viva

En su mensaje del Ángelus del 19 de diciembre, 1999, San Juan Pablo II explicó que Navidad no es un simple recuerdo del evento que sucedió hace 2000 años, cuando según el Evangelio, el poder de Dios tomó la forma de un recién na-cido frágil. En realidad es sobre la viva realidad que se repi-te cada año en el corazón de los creyentes. “El misterio de la Noche santa, que aconteció históricamente hace dos mil años, se actúa, como evento espiritual, en el hoy de la litur-gia”, aclaró el Papa. “El Verbo, que encontró morada en el seno de María, viene a llamar al corazón de todo hombre con singular intensidad en esta Navidad”.

Christmas…a Living Reality

John Paul II, in his Angelus message of December 19, 1999, explained that Christmas is not simply the remembrance of the Event that took place 2000 years ago when, according to the Gospel, the power of God took on the frailty of a ba-by. It is really about a living reality that is repeated every year in the heart of believers. "The mystery of the Holy Night, which historically happened two thousand years ago, must be lived as a spiritual event in the ‘today’ of the Liturgy," the Pope clarified. "The Word who found a dwelling in Mary’s womb comes to knock on the heart of every person with singular intensity this Christmas."

Bienes Invisibles Una historia que nos enseña que

lo material no es la felicidad

Tomás es un chico de siete años que vive con su mamá, una pobre costurera, en su solo cuarto, en una pequeña ciudad del norte de

Escocia. La víspera de Navidad, en su cama, el chico espera, ansioso, la venida de Papá Noel. Según la costumbre de su país, ha colocado en la chimenea una gran media de lana, esperando encontrarla, a la mañana siguiente, llena de regalos.

Pero su mamá sabe que no habrá regalos de Navidad para Tomás por su falta de dinero. Para evitar su desilusión, le explica que hay bienes visibles, que se compran con dinero, y bienes invisibles, que no se compran, ni se venden, ni se ven, pero que lo hacen a uno muy feliz: como el cariño de la mamá, por ejemplo.

Al día siguiente, Tomás despierta, corre a la chimenea y ve su media vacía. La recoge con emoción y alegría y se la muestra su mamá: "¡Está llena de bienes invisibles!", le dice, y se le ve feliz. Por la tarde va Tomás al salón parroquial donde se reúnen los chicos, cada cual mostrando orgulloso su regalo. "¿Y a ti, Tomás, qué te ha traído Papá Noel?", le pre-guntan.

Tomás muestra feliz su media vacía: "¡A mí me ha traído bienes invisibles!", contesta. Los chicos se ríen de él. Entre ellos Federico un niño consentido quien tiene el mejor regalo pero no es feliz. Por envidia sus compañeros le hacen burla porque su lindo auto a pedal no tiene marcha atrás, y enfurecido destruye el valioso juguete.

El papá de Federico se aflige, y se pregunta como podría darle gusto a su hijo. En eso ve a Tomás sentado en un rincón, feliz con su media vacía. Le pregunta: "¿Que te ha traído Papá Noel?"

"A mí bienes invisibles", contesta Tomás ante la sorpresa del papá de Federico, y le explica que no se ven, ni se compran, ni se venden, como el cariño de una mamá.

El papá de Federico comprendió. Los muchos regalos visibles y vistosos no habían logrado la felicidad de su hijo. Tomás había descubierto, gracias a su mamá, el camino a la felici-dad.

ORACION PARA INICIAR EL AÑO

Señor Jesús, dueño del tiempo y la eternidad, tuyo es el hoy y el mañana, el pasado y el futuro. Delante de ti hacemos un pacto para vivir cada día de este año con entusiasmo, con buena voluntad y con un corazón lleno de tranquilidad, comprensión y alegría. Abre nuestros oídos para escuchar tu palabra, a las personas que queremos y al hermano que pide ayuda; ciérralos ante el odio, las mentiras, el egoísmo y las críticas voraces. Abre nuestros ojos para ver todo lo bueno de tu creación, para ver tus bendiciones en nuestra familia, para discernir el bien y el mal, para aceptar un buen trabajo o amistad, para ver lo bueno de cada uno, para ver lo maravillosa que es la vida a tu lado… Te pedimos con fe envíes a tu Espíritu para que derrame sobre nosotros y sobre las personas que queremos, en especial sobre nuestra fami-lia, sus sagrados dones: sabiduría, inteligencia, consejo, fortaleza, ciencia, piedad y temor de Dios. Por último te pedimos también nos ayudes a ser tus testigos y que en nuestro caminar siempre transmitamos tu alegría, tu entusiasmo, tu bondad. Amen.

NEW YEAR'S PRAYER: O God of new beginnings and wonderful surprises, thank you for the gift of a new year. May it be a time of grace for me, a time to grow in faith and love, a time to renew my commitment to following Your Son, Jesus. May it be a year of blessing for me, a time to cherish my family and friends, a time to renew my efforts at work, a time to embrace my faith more fully. Walk with me, please, in every day and every hour of this new year, that the light of Christ might shine through me, in spite of my weak-nesses and failings. Above all, may I remember this year that I am a pilgrim on the sacred path to You. Amen.

A THOUGH FOR CHRISTMAS

As we look on baby Jesus we think of the mystery of God’s love for us. Why did God who is almighty and all-powerful become small and powerless as a baby? Quite simply, out of love for us. God became human so that we might be-come more like God. Jesus if you had not come as a hu-man like us, we might have had difficulty in believing that God really loved us. But now we know for sure. John the Evangelist says, “This is the revelation of God’s love for us, that God sent his only Son into the world that we might have life through him.” Let us thank God for revealing his love for us in Jesus, that he who is so big and powerful became so small and weak for us, that he became one of us, to help us be more like him, to have life through him.
