Ayudar a nuestros hijos a tomar decisiones saludables positivas
portante. Estamos comprometidos a ayudar a nuestros estudiantes
ELA, estamos leyendo y respondiendo preguntas usando
No olvide poner
conceptos:
clasificar, medir, patrones, balanceo, gráficas, estimados, contar, com-
hijo,
Noticias de Kinder Estamos aprendiendo muchas
cosas nuevas en Kindergarten. En
ELA este mes estamos aprendiendo
de los cinco sentidos, textos de no-
ficción, textos de ficción, historias,
personajes, idea principal y detalles.

idea principal, detalles importantes y temas.

Important Dates
Helping our children make positive healthy choices takes
the entire school community– teachers, principals, cafeteria
staff and parents working together in a coordinated way. We
strongly encourage and welcome your support. As a parent,
your role in influencing your child to make healthy choices is
extremely important. We are committed to helping our stu-
dents make eat more nutritious foods and get more physically
active this school year.
Dear Parents,
Just next week the 1st quarter comes to end and we are currently taking our first Benchmark Assess-
ment for the year. This test gives us an idea of how our students are progressing and what areas we need to im-
prove upon as the year goes on. I am excited about the opportunity our students have to “show what they know” on
this district wide test. These two pieces represent both an end and a beginning for our students. They are able to
show their growth, but we are also able to articulate and understand how much further they have to go (and some
might not have that far!). Take this time to celebrate with your child how far they have come, how much they have
grown this school year. They deserve to know that we are all watching and we are all so proud of them!
I am also going to push you this month to find more time to read. Students should be reading 30 minutes
a day outside of school. If they do so; that equals 210 minutes a week, 840 minutes a month, or almost 11,000
minutes a year of reading. This means they would have spent a little over a full week reading. Our goal for our stu-
dents is ALL students reading ON grade level. Just think how far they could fly with all of that extra time!
Finally, I would like you to put you on the look out for some exciting information going home for some of
our students when their reports go out. We will be hosting an Awards Celebration for those students that receive
any number of awards (A Honor Roll, A/B Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, Good Behavior). Students that receive
these awards will be given the opportunity to invite their parents or loved ones to come celebrate with them and I
hope to see all of my parents there! Until then, keep reading, keep loving, keep learning because at Greenlawn, the
Best is Yet to Come!
Best,
Kevin W. Nanney
Mission Statement:
Through equity, empathy, inclusion, and high-
quality instruction, Greenlawn will provide an
education that prepares all learners for suc-
cess.
Vision Statement:
Greenlawn Terrace is a community where every
adult and child will succeed at his or her maxi-
mum potential in a safe, inspiring and challeng-
ing learning environment.
Library
Library is off to a wonderful start! Each homeroom class gets to visit
the library once a week for storytime, informational resource lessons and
the borrowing library books.
Many students have also begun to take weekly Accelerated Reader
quizzes. These quizzes are taken after a student has read a book and tests
his/her comprehension of the book. Students that score with a high per-
centage receive a chance to win a bicycle and other prizes.
As we do at school, please encourage your child to read on a daily ba-
sis. Reading daily helps with comprehension skills, writing skills, vocabu-
lary skills, and reading confidence.
Hello fall! As we usher in the Fall
season, our second graders are learn-
ing about habitats and living things in
science. We are reading and answering
questions using evidence from the text.
We are finishing up our unit on Asian
civilizations and will move on to the
Ancient Greek civilization. In math, we
are continuing to use strategies to prac-
tice adding and subtracting. We have
also started place value and comparing
numbers up to 1,000. Don’t forget to
have your child read every night. We
are off to a great start!

First Grade News
It’s fall y’all! Throughout the month of October, the Pre-K students will
use apples to introduce the following concepts: sorting, measuring, pat-
terning, balancing, graphing, estimating, counting, comparing and gain-
ing an understanding of directional words. To help us accomplish these
skills, we ask for every Pre-K student to bring in 2 different colored ap-
ples by October 4th (Ex: 1 green apple and 1 yellow apple)
The Pre-K students will also learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin.
We will be going on a field trip to the Pumpkin Patch on October 30th.
Please sign and return the field trip permission form and send $10.00 by
October 25th.
Please continue to review sight words daily with your child, practice
writing their names in pencil, and complete homework! Also, please re-
member that Pre-K students need to wear their purple uniform shirts to
school every day.
Kindergarten News We are learning a lot of
new things in Kindergarten!
In ELA, we’re learning about
the five senses, non-fiction
text, characters, setting,
main idea and details. In
math class, we are learning
about counting the math
way, finding hidden partners,
writing numbers 0-10 and
shapes.
A few reminders: check
your child’s green folder
nightly, sign the behavior
calendar nightly, check the
red homework folder daily,
and please make sure your
child brings his/her “how I go
home” tag and school ID to
school every day.
How can I help my child with reading if I can’t speak the language? Even though you may not speak English, there are many ways to devel-op your child’s oral language through literacy. Storytelling “Read” wordless picture books Say rhymes and sing songs Engage in meaningful conversations Watch educational children’s programs in English together Make frequent trips to the public library To help with these skills, visit your local library to sign up for a library card. This is a great start to help your child grow as reader. Also, practice on Lexia and iReady.
Fourth Grade News
Third Grade News Fifth Grade News
Wow! Time is flying by us! Fourth graders have completed
Module 1 and 2 in Eureka Math. We will start Module 3,
which involves multiplication and division. In science, stu-
dents are going back in time to discover changes to the Earth
through natural processes. They will be digging deep to see
evidence of life on Earth long ago. Also, students will exam-
ine the impact of European exploration and colonization of
the Americas on native people, boundaries, territories, and
land. In ELA, students will to continue to read and analyze
different types of texts. Students will be looking for main
idea, key details, and themes. They will also be analyzing
characters and actions through writing. Thanks for all your
support!
First grade is working on mastering
our segmenting and blending skills to
help us become better readers. Read-
ing at home daily is another way to help
us meet our goal! In Math, we are prac-
ticing our addition and subtraction
skills. Practice makes perfect! You can
help your child by having them recite or
write math facts. Coming up in Science
is identifying the parts of a plant. We
will be planting something special very
soon!
TEAM 1st GRADE
Second Grade News Pre-Kindergarten News
Happy fall from your third grade teachers! The first quarter of the school year is coming to an end, and we couldn’t be happier about the growth our students are experiencing! In ELA, we are closing out our Cajun folktales unit with an opinion essay on the rabbit Compere Lapin. In Math, we are continuing our work on multiplica-tion, division, and the properties. Please continue to encourage your child to read and practice their multipli-cation facts at home.
Happy October! This month in 5th grade
reading, students will be finishing our Making
of a Scientist novel with an emphasis on the
solar system. After that is complete, we will
read The Birchbark House and learn about Na-
tive Americans. In math, students will continue
to working through multiplication using visual
models and the standard algorithm, and move
in to long division. In science, we are begin-
ning to learn about what the universe is made of
in a study of matter. In social studies, students
will learn and develop a claim about early ex-
ploration and encounters with indigenous
groups to consider what happens when cultures
collide.
