Estimados amigos del Balonmano,

El balonmano español ha logrado albergar un Campeonato del Mundo Abso-luto Masculino, la gran cita bienal de nuestro deporte, y en la que tras vein-tidós ediciones, España ha logrado un palmarés muy notable en sus catorce participaciones, sin faltar a ninguna edición desde 1978. El histórico oro de Túnez’05, la reciente medalla de bronce en Suecia’11, las dos semifinales disputadas en Egipto’99 y Portugal’03, junto a los cuatro quintos puestos de Suiza’86, Checoslovaquia’90, Suecia’93 y Francia’01, evidencian que el balonmano español ha logrado instalarse en la élite de balonmano mundial.

La Federación Internacional de Balonmano (IHF) valoró en su día la historia del balonmano español y con la concesión de la organización de esta edición a España permite brindar a deportistas, aficionados, medios de comunica-ción, seguidores y amantes del deporte, la posibilidad de disfrutar en nuestro país de un Campeonato del Mundo de esta maravillosa disciplina deportiva.

Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Sevilla, Granollers y Guadalajara serán las sedes para este gran evento; ciudades con solvencia demostrada en la organización y gestión deportiva, y en las que se ha apostado firmemente para poder formar parte de este Mundial. Sus avales han sido unas mag-nificas instalaciones, una representativa oferta hotelera, un pragmático plan de transportes, y sobre todo, la conciencia de implicarse activamente en la promoción de nuestro deporte.

Todas las sedes serán el gran espejo en el que mirarse tanto desde dentro como desde fuera, conscientes de la acogida amigable y calurosa de sus gentes e instituciones, lo que nos permitirá velar por ofrecer la imagen real de nuestro país.

Este arriesgado y ambicioso reto tiene como fin último la cohesión del ba-lonmano español, y la suma de agentes que, en el trabajo denodado de la gestión de un evento de esta naturaleza, aunemos los esfuerzos por recu-perar las bases, y cimentar un proyecto de futuro que nos permita situar socialmente el balonmano en la esfera que le corresponde.

Mi deseo como presidente del Comité Organizador de este XXIII Campeona-to del Mundo, es que este gran evento se desarrolle desde el más amplio sentido del término deportividad, con los valores intrínsecos al balonmano, competitividad, emoción, fuerza, potencia, respeto, educación, y sobre todo, juego limpio.

Suerte a todos los equipos participantes, oficiales, árbitros y personal de organización. Estoy convencido que entre todos haremos un gran XXIII Cam-peonato del Mundo.

Dear Handball Friends!

The 23rd Men’s Handball World Championship will start on 11 Janu¬ary 2013 and will be held in Spain for the first time in its eventful and very interesting history. After the Olympic Handball Tournament in 1992 and the European Championship in 1996, this tournament will be the third major event to be organized by the Royal Spanish Handball Federation.

I could repeatedly go and see for myself that the hosting country of the 2013 global title contests is very well prepared for the WCh matches starting in mid-January. As the championship approaches, WCh preparation at the four venues for the preliminary round - Gra-nollers, Seville, Saragossa and Madrid - is at least as good as in the city of Guadalajara, where the President’s Cup will be organized, and in Barcelona, where knock-out and final matches will be played. And the 16 500 spectators expected in Palau Sant Jordi hall will certainly create a great atmosphere. But this will undoubtedly be the case in Madrid too, where the hosting country intends to organize the preli-mi¬nary round matches in the Caja Mágica hosting 12 000 visitors.

I really believe that the World Championship in Spain will be a crowd-puller and that host country Spain as well as the numerous fans from abroad supporting their respec¬tive teams will make this event a true festival of handball. However, much more spec¬tators all over the world at home in front of their television will also parti-cipate in this competition by watching the matches of their favourite team as well as of the other teams with great excitement and enthu-siasm. The tremendous TV ratings over the past few years prove that especially the Men’s World Championship is a great showcase for our sport – and for people all over the world, as handball has become very attractive not only in traditional European handball countries, but also on all the other continents.

I wish all participating teams the very best of luck for the tournament and a good time ahead. And I hope that handball will attract the public interest and audience the players have worked hard for. The Spanish people are known as sports enthusiasts – they will cheer for their team, but also respect all the other teams in a friendly manner.

Let’s enjoy the 23rd World Championship in the heart of our sport – Welcome to Spain. May the best team win and fair play prevail.

From these pages I want to welcome the all selections to Granollers, which will participate in the XXIII World Men’s Handball Championship and all fans who will witness this important event. We are proud to host such an impor-tant event that is also a sign of the commitment of the city to handball club of Granollers, the club that made famous our name all over Europe and the world during the last seventy years. In addition to promoting the city, the BM Granollers club is doing so outstan-ding job of social cohesion through the formation of a large pool of male and female players and at the same time is organizing Granollers Cup annually, the most important international tournament for young players. Granollers is a city that loves handball and twenty years ago it was en-trusted with the organization of handball tournaments during the 1992 Olympics Games of Barcelona. Since then we have gathered experience by hosting different high-level tournaments. Without a doubt this cham-pionship repositioned our city as a world reference of handball.

I would like to wish good luck to all participating teams, and this event will prove that Granollers is a city that offers a warm wel-come to all visitors.

Nos sentimos orgullosos de acoger un acontecimiento tan importante que también es una muestra del compromiso de la ciudad con el Balonmano Granollers, club que ha paseado nuestro nombre por Europa y por el mundo, desde hace casi setenta años. Además de promocionar la ciudad, el BM Granollers realiza una destacada tarea de cohesión social a través de la formación de una extensa cantera de jugadores y jugadoras, a la vez que organiza anualmente la Granollers Cup, el torneo internacional más importante de balonmano base.Granollers es una ciudad que ama el balonmano y por ello veinte años atrás se le confió la organización de esta modalidad en los Juegos Olímpi-cos de Barcelona 92. HISTORIAGranollers es, con cerca de 60.000 habitantes, la capital y la localidad más poblada del Vallés Oriental, en Barcelona, con cerca de 4.000 años de historia a sus espaldas. Sin embargo, el topónimo de Granollers no aparece nombrado hasta el 944, 500 años antes de ser declarada Calle de Barcelona por parte de Alfonso IV, en 1418.

El Siglo XVI es el siglo de oro de Granollers, con un incremento demográfico espectacular y un desarrollo mercantil de enor-me prosperidad, acompañado de edificaciones de gran rele-vancia: la Iglesia de San Esteban, de estilo gótico, el Convento de San Francisco y La Porxada, diseñada a modo de lonja de grano y declarada Bien de Interés Cultural en 2006.

Además, Granollers está ligada de forma constante a la acti-vidad deportiva. En 1992, sin ir más lejos, fue sede del torneo de balonmano en los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona 1992.

La Ciudad Condal, nombre que recibe por haber sido la capital del Condado de Cataluña en tiem-pos de Carlomagno; es actualmente la segunda ciudad más poblada de España, al contar con más de millón y medio de habitantes.

Los primeros restos encontrados en este área datan del neolítico, en torno al año 1500 antes de Cristo; aunque los primeros pobladores des-tacados son los layetanos, un pueblo íbero que estuvo en esta zona en torno al siglo quinto a.C. La ciudad fue fundada por Octavio Augusto en el Siglo I a. C., primer emperador romano, pro-viniendo el nombre de Barkeno, una población ibérica próxima.

La ciudad creció en importancia, fue capital hispánica en el siglo V, tras la llegada de los visigodos; y entre el XIII y el XIV se convirtió en uno de los principales puertos del Mediterráneo Occidental. Tras una época de decadencia, la industrialización del siglo XIX colocó de nuevo a Barcelona como referencia política, económica y cultural; una situación en la que aún se encuen-tra actualmente.

The city of Barcelona has this name because of having been the capital of the County of Catalonia under Charlemagne, and is currently the second largest city in Spain with over a million and a half inhabitants.

The first remains found in this area were discovered in the Neolithic period, around 1500 BC, though the first settlers were Laietans , the Iberian inhabitans, who lived in this area around the fifth century BC. The city of Barcelona was found by Octavian Augustus in the first century BC, who was the first Roman emperor, coming from the name of Barkeno, the nearest Iberian population.

The city grew and was the Hispanic capital in the V century after the arrival of the Visigoths; and it became one of the main ports of the Western Mediterranean between the XIII and XIV centuries. After a period of decline, the nineteenth century industrialization placed Barcelona as a political, economic and cultural reference which is the actual position of this city.

PALAU SANT JORDI

Situado en la montaña barcelonesa de Montjuic, el Palau Sant Jordi fue creado con motivo de los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992, durante los cuales acogió diversas pruebas de múltiples disciplinas deportivas, incluidas las finales de los torneos masculino y femenino de balonmano.

Además, este pabellón ha acogido otros eventos relevantes como tres Final Four de la Euroliga de baloncesto (1998, 2003 y 2011), dos finales de la Copa Davis de tenis (2000 y 2009) y el Campeonato Mundial de Atletismo en Pista Cubierta de 2005, entre otros.

This center is located in Barcelona’s Montjuic Mountain, and was created due to the 1992 Olympic Games, during which were celebrated various sports multiple tests, including handball male and female finals.

In addition, this pavilion has hosted other kinds of events such as the Final Four of Basketball Euroleague (1998, 2003 and 2011), two Davis Cup finals of tennis (2000 and 2009) and World Indoor Athletics Championship (2005) among others.

Objetivos de Francia para el próximo ciclo olímpicoEl objetivo es escribir la historia del balonmano fran-cés y añadir más títulos; integrar más jugadores en el dispositivo de juego, a través de una formación espe-cializada en cada nivel del equipo; y seguir brillando en todas las competiciones internacionales.

Objetivos de Francia para el Campeonato del Mun-do de 2013¡Ganar! Con todos los títulos logrados en los últimos años, no podemos fijar un objetivo por debajo de le-vantar el título, a pesar de conocer la dificultad de to-dos los oponentes.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo A?¡Todos! El estilo de uno a otro es muy distinto, nos vamos a tener que adaptar a ellos. Alemania, por ejemplo, está en pleno proceso de reconstrucción y con ganas de volver a brillar. Argentina y Brasil son equipos veloces que, además, han progresado de for-ma significativa durante los últimos años, hasta com-petir a gran nivel contra los mejores. Con respecto a Túnez, tengo poco que decir, están presentes en todos los grandes eventos y en Londres han demostrado, otra vez, que pueden figurar entre los mejores. Por último, conocemos poco a Montenegro porque, desde su separación de Serbia, no ha participado en grandes competiciones; pero sé que está formada por jugado-res de calidad que participan en los principales clubes del continente.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clu-bes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?La mayoría de nosotros está estrechamente conectado con España, nos encontramos a menudo y tengo una gran afinidad con el staff técnico de España. Además, muchos jugadores franceses han jugado y están jugan-do en España, y ahora muchos jugadores españoles es-tán llegando a Francia. La verdad, diría que es el equipo que mejor conozco, después de Francia, ya sea en el juego, el staff técnico o los jugadores. Y observo la liga española con regularidad, sobre todo por el Atlético de Madrid y el Barcelona, dos clubes grandes.

¿Qué conoces de Granollers, sede para los partidos del Grupo A?Granollers está a 300 kilómetros de Toulouse, mi lu-gar de residencia, y tengo una estrecha relación con la ciudad, que conozco perfectamente, con el club de Granollers y con la gente que allí trabaja, en especial con Josep Blanchart.

Goal for the Olympic period until 2016We aim at making history in French Handball by adding new titles to the ones we alre-ady have, integrating more players into the game, through specialized training at each level of the team, and keep shining in all in-ternational competitions.

Goals for the first event of the Olympic period: Spain 2013Win! Because of all the titles that we have won over the past few years, we must aim at the very least to win the Championship, although we know how hard it will be to beat the rival teams.

Which opponent is more powerful on Group A?All of them! The style changes a great deal from one team to the other, and we will have to adapt ourselves to them. Germany, for instance, is facing a period of chan-ge and is rebuilding itself as a team so they are eager to shine again. Argentina and Brazil are fast teams that have made significant progress over the last few years, until being able to compete at a high level against the best ones. With regard to Tunisia I don’t have much to say, they are present in all major events and in London they proved once again that they can be part of the best ones. Finally, we know little about Montenegro because, since its separation from Serbia, it has not taken part in major competitions, but I know it has great players who play in major clubs.

What is your knowledge of Spanish Handball? Which clubs and players from Spain are right now the main ones for you?Most of us are closely linked to Spain, we meet each other often and have great affinity with the Spanish te-chnical staff. Besides, many French players have played and are playing in Spain, and now many Spanish players are arriving to France. The truth is, I think it’s the team (both the technical staff and the players) that I know best, after the French one. And I follow the Spanish league regularly, especially for the two big clubs, the Atletico Madrid and the Barcelona.

What do you know about Granollers, venue for the Group A?Granollers is 300 kilometers from Toulouse, where I live, and I have a close relationship with the city, that I know perfectly well, with Granollers handball club and with the people who work there, especially with Josep Blanchart.

El equipo está proceso de desarrollo, con muchas gente entrando en él, y vamos a necesitar uno o dos años para alcanzar la rutina. Además, tenemos muchos jóvenes in-teresantes que, poco a poco, me gustaría probar en el primer equipo. Por tanto, espero tener un grupo potente en Río 2016 y, así, poder luchar por lograr una medalla olímpica.

Objetivos de Alemania para el Campeonato del Mun-do de 2013El grupo está en proceso de desarrollo, pero nos gusta-ría jugar del mejor modo posible en todo momento. En Serbia, terminar en séptimo lugar y cerca de semifinales fue un resultado muy sólido. En España, por primera vez, vamos a tener una ronda de octavos de final: un sistema que ofrece grandes oportunidades pero que, a la vez, es peligroso. Primero, nos gustaría estar en octavo de final y, a ser posible, terminar en segundo lugar en el Grupo A. A partir de ahí, tenemos que observar cómo evoluciona cada grupo.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo A?Francia ha dominado los últimos años y, a pesar de tener que renovar la plantilla, es el principal favorito en el Gru-po A. El resto de oponentes son complicados: Argentina, el conjunto más potente de América; Túnez, un peligro por su forma de jugar tan agresiva y ofensiva; Montene-gro, verdugo de Suecia en el Play Off; y Brasil, un rival de nivel para debutar.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clubes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?He seguido la pista del balonmano español desde hace muchos años, y me gusta la forma de defender, basa-do en anticipaciones. Además, disfruto con la forma de jugar con el BM Atlético de Madrid, con el 6-0 del FC Barcelona; pero ambos clubes aglutinan a muchos ju-gadores del combinado español. Ahí está la diferencia, los jugadores de Alemania pertenecen a distintos clu-bes. Además, es interesante el ataque de España, con un grupo de jugadores pequeños pero perfectamente educados, jugando un balonmano muy atractivo.

Goals for the Olympic period until 2016When I became head coach, we began a new phase - for the first time in Serbia. We failed then to qualify for the Olympics, but we will stay on the road to 2016. With our team we are in a development process. There were some changes, as new and young players joined the team. We will need one or two more tournaments to master the routine. I think this group has a lot of poten-tial. And in the younger age categories we have some more interesting people I want to test in our team in the near future - therefore I hope in 2016 we will have a strong team, which can compete for medals.

Goals for the first event of the Olympic period: Spain 2013As I mentioned, we are in a development process, but we want to play as well and successfully as we possibly can each and every single time. In Serbia we got very close to the semifinal. The seventh place was a solid result. There will be eight-finals in Spain for the first time - this means danger to drop out at an early stage, but I also see new chances in this procedure. First we want to reach the eight-finals - if possible as the se-cond ones of the group. Then we will see.

Which opponent is the most powerful one on Group A?France has mastered handball during the last years. I believe, though they have to start a change in their team, they will be our major rival - because they have already put some changes into place: Accambray und Barachet are two young and promising players. I think France is clearly the favorite one. But the rest of the group is very well-balanced: we have to face the best Pan-American team with Argentina, the African Cham-pion Tunisia is always dangerous because of their ag-gressive and offensive way of defending, Montenegro stopped Sweden in the Play-offs, and Brazil in the opening match is difficult as well. So we have to focus on each single match giving 100 percent. And in the eight-finals Iwould like to avoid Denmark and Hungary.

What is your knowledge of Spanish Handball? Which clubs and players from Spain are right now the main ones for you?I have been keeping track of the Spanish handball for years. I like the Spanishdefense, their philosophy based on anticipation. I enjoy watching it, for example in the match of Atletico Madrid / Barcelona with a 6:0-defen-se followed a different philosophy, but both clubs play with a lot of Spanish national team players. Maybe this is the biggest difference compared to our team, becau-se we have to recruit our team out of a great number of clubs. This is an advantage for Spain.

Objetivos de Argentina para el Campeonato del Mundo de 2013El Campeonato del Mundo de 2013 es el evento más importante para nosotros, y el objetivo es mantener el nivel alcanzado en Suecia 2011 y, de ser posible, lograr otro resultado histórico para Argentina.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo A?Sin lugar a dudas, Francia es el rival más poderoso. Ha demostrado estar por encima de todos en 5 de los 6 últimos eventos importantes. Para nosotros, llegar a la segunda ronda es muy positivo, pero no podemos pensar en el posible rival de octavos de final; aquí, to-dos los oponentes pertenecen a la elite del balonmano y no tenemos preferencia alguna.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clu-bes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?Conozco en profundidad el balonmano español, mu-chos jugadores argentinas están jugando o han jugado en España, y tengo amistad con muchos jugadores y entrenadores españoles. Además, Argentina ha sido invitada muchas veces a preparar el equipo allí. Sin ninguna duda, los clubes más importantes son el Ade-mar, el BM Atlético de Madrid y el FC Barcelona.

¿Qué conoces de Granollers, sede para los parti-dos del Grupo A?Desafortunadamente, nunca he estado allí, pero mu-chos entrenadores de jugadores jóvenes han estado en Granollers alguna vez, durante la Granollers Cup, y han encontrado una ciudad excelente, con gente encantadora de todo el mundo con la que compartir el balonmano.

Goals for the Olympic period until 2016Our main goal for this new Olympic cycle is to qualify for the second time, keeping the same group of players to arrive with the necessary experience and to improve our performance level in London.

Goals for the first event of the Olympic period: Spain 2013The World Championship is our most important com-petition before the Olympics and in this tournament we aim at keeping the level we had during the World Championship in Sweden and see if we achieve ano-ther historic outcome for Argentina.

Which rival is the most powerful one on Group A?Without any doubt the most powerful rival is France, which has proved to be the best of all five in the past six major competitions. Getting to the second round would be great for us and, as we will face all those elite teams which have achieved to reach this World Championship, there is not a particular team we want to avoid.

What do you know about Spanish Handball? Which clubs and players from Spain are right now the main ones for you?I know a lot about Spanish handball since many of our players play in the Spanish league and we have friendly relationships with many of the Spanish coa-ches, players and clubs. Also, we have been invited many times to play friendly matches against our natio-nal team. Without any doubt the most important clubs are the Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid and Ademar.

What do you know about Granollers, the venue for the Group A?Unfortunately, I have never been there, but many of the coaches of the young players have been there many times, during the Granollers Cup, and they have found a great city with very nice people from all over the world to share our passion for handball.

España dispone de grandes jugadores y un equipo homogéneo, bien dirigido por Valero Rivera.

¿Qué conoces de Granollers, sede para los parti-dos del Grupo A?Conozco el BM Granollers, ¡un club histórico! He ju-gado algún partido en Granollers durante mi carrera deportiva en el Nimes de Francia, y como entrenador también he jugador allí. Además, durante mi presen-cia en Barcelona 1992, Granollers era sede del ba-lonmano y, por eso, estoy tan familiarizado con el club y la ciudad.

When I was a player in France Nimes, I used to play against this team. I also continued to play against BB Granollers when I became a coach. In addition, I participated in the Olympic Games 92 which took place in Barcelo-na, so I am very familiar with the club and the city in particular.

Objetivos de Montenegro para el Campeonato del Mundo de 2013Por primera vez, los hombres de Montenegro tienen la oportunidad de jugar en una cita así. Un hecho muy importante para el balonmano masculino de Monte-negro. Montenegro fue mejor que Suecia en junio, pero cada victoria aquí puede significar mucho para nosotros, y el deseo es llegar a los octavos de final.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo A?Todos los rivales del Grupo A son potentes. Alemania, Argentina, Brasil, Francia y Túnez son rivales que me-recen el máximo respeto. Montenegro es debutante en el Campeonato del Mundo de 2013, y jugar los octavos de final ya sería una gran recompensa al tra-bajo de toda la temporada.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clu-bes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?Soy seguidor de la Liga ASOBAL, y de los equipos españoles en competiciones continentales. Conozco la calidad de los clubes españoles y, particularmente, me gusta la forma de jugar del FC Barcelona. Para mí, los mejores jugadores españoles son Arpad Sterbik y el volante del MKB Veszprém, Chema Rodríguez.

¿Qué conoces de Granollers, sede para los parti-dos del Grupo A?De Granollers, que está cerca de Barcelona, conozco que es una ciudad de negocios e industrias. Además, sé cosas del BM Granollers, un club de gran tradición que alzó la Copa EHF de 1995 y 1996.

Participation in the Championship is very impor-tant for men’s handball in Montenegro. Our team was qualified in June and we were better than Sweden, but each victory during the Championship will mean a lot to our team. Our desire is to go into the second round.

Which opponent is the most powerful on Group A?All the opponents in our group are very strong. Signi-ficantly the matter is in what composition they would come to the tournament. Teams of France, Germany, Tunisia, Argentina and Brazil deserve our full res-pect. We are debutants on World Championship. The game against any team in the second round would be a reward for the hard work of our team during this season.

What is your knowledge of Spanish Handball? Which clubs and players from Spain are right now the main ones for you?I follow Spanish Handball and clubs that play in the league and European competitions. I know the qua-lity of the league and players, and I like the way the Barcelona team plays. For me, the main ones are the goalkeeper Sterbik and playmaker of Vesprem, Rodri-guez Vaquero.

What do you know about Granollers, venue for the Group A?Granollers is a city in Catalonia, near Barcelona. Gra-nollers is a business centre, and many industries are located there. Handball club from Granollers has a long tradition, and won EHF Champions Cup in 1995 and 1996.

Objetivos de Brasil para el Campeonato del Mundo de 2013El objetivo para el Campeonato del Mundo de 2013 es mejorar el ranking de Suecia 2011 y alcanzar los octavos de final. Si logramos cumplir el objetivo, será una gran noticia para nosotros.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo A?Francia es el principal rival del Grupo A, pero tene-mos que estar atentos porque todos los equipos han introducido jugadores distintos y nosotros tenemos un nuevo entrenador y muchas novedades en plan-tilla. En caso de llegar a octavos de final, no tenemos preferencia alguna con el rival porque estar allí sería fantástico.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clu-bes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?La Liga ASOBAL tiene gran cantidad de equipos con jugadores muy importantes. El FC Barcelona, por ejemplo, tiene un equipo brillante, uno de los mejores del mundo; y el BM Atlético de Madrid es otro equipo muy potente, pero los problemas de Hombrados han reducido su nivel.

¿Qué conoces de Granollers, sede para los parti-dos del Grupo A?Nací en Gerona y, por tanto, sé que Granollers es una ciudad fantástica, repleta de balonmano.

Some young players are like diamonds that have to be polished. We would like to play more possible games against the best world teams.

Goals for the first event of the Olympic period: Spain 2013During this WCh2013, we have to improve our position in the ranking of Sweden 2011 and try to qualify for the eight-finals of the tournament. If we manage to do this task, it would be a big piece of news for us.

Which opponent is the most powerful one on Group A?We think that France is the best team in our group but we should be attentive because of the fact that all teams have new players, so we are. Our team also has some new players and a coach. If we qualify for the next round of eight-finals, it will be a fantastic thing and we have no preference regarding our rivals.

What is your knowledge of Spanish Handball? Which clubs and players from Spain are right now the main ones for you?The Spanish league has a lot of great teams with great players, FC Barcelona has a brilliant squad, one of the best in the world, Atletico Madrid has a lot of great pla-yers as well, but without JJ Hombrados, who is injured, reduced a little bit of its team abilities, but this club is still a great team.

HISTORYSettled on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, Seville is one of the most visited cities in Spain thanks to its unparalleled historical legacy, from ancient times, with the presence of Tartessian and Car-thaginian cultures, until the arrival of the Roman Empire: Italica e Hispalis were locations of intense commercial and naval activity.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, the area became occupied by the Visigoths until the arrival of the Muslims, which turned the city of Al-Andalus into the capital of the Kingdom of Taifa. During this period, Isbilia (The arabic name of Seville) went through a period of great economic and cultural splendor. As a matter of fact, some of its greatest architectural works belong to the Muslim era: the Alcázar, the Giralda and the Torre del Oro.

With the Reconquista and the arrival to America, the importance of Seville grew significantly to be one of the biggest cities in Spain, playing a key role in the Spanish Golden Age. In the twentieth century, the city hosted two major events at an international level: the Latin American Exhibition of 1929 and the 1992 World Expo, an unmistakable proof of the successful expansion and modernization process undertaken by Sevilla throughout the century.

Ulrik WilbekHead CoachGoals for the Olympic period until 2016The major goal is to do well at the Olympics in Rio 2016 as the Danish team has had two big disappointments at the Olympics in Beijing 2008 and at the London 2012 Olympics. Of course we also aim at doing well at the European Cham-pionships in our own country in 2014. And, as always, we aim at constantly renewing the way we play handball at the highest possible level.

Goals for the first event of the Olympic period: Spain 2013For the time being I think our team is part of the top 4 in the world and thus we hope to qualify for the se-mi-finals. But during the last seasons it has become in-creasingly difficult to win medals in international hand-ball tournaments. Simply because many countries have improved the way they play and have now top quality teams, and by 2013 standards I reckon that at least nine, or even ten, of the participating teams in the World Championship have a fair chance of winning a medal, but my favorite ones are France, Spain and Croatia.

Which rival is the most powerful one in Group B?For us it has always been very difficult to playagainst Iceland and Macedonia, but the way I see it Russia is on its way back to the top of international handball again. So we will have a lot of interesting matches in Group B. I don’t consider Group A to be as tough as Group B but obviously we would like to avoid France, and Ger-many is always a toughrival. But recently Montenegro has proved to be very powerful too. So we would be very pleased to be number 1 in Group B to avoid these three countries.

What is your knowledge of Spanish Handball? Which clubs and players from Spain are right now the main ones for you?In Denmark we know quite a lot about Spanish hand-ball as many of our key players have played in clubs like the FC Barcelona, the Ciudad Real/Atlético Madrid, the Ademar Leon and the Portland San Antonio over the past years. Right now, I think the FC Barcelona is the best Spanish team and maybe the best club team in the world.

What do you know about Sevilla, venue for the Group B?Not much. I have never been to the city but I really look forward to visiting Andalucía.

Objetivos de Dinamarca para el próximo ciclo olímpicoEl principal objetivo es completar un gran papel en Río 2016, y olvidar las grandes decepciones de Pekín 2008 y Londres 2012. Además, nos gustaría brillar en el Campeonato de Europa de 2014, organizado por Dinamarca, y trabajar con el objetivo de renovar la for-ma de jugar al balonmano en el más alto nivel posible.

Objetivos de Dinamarca para el Campeonato del Mundo de 2013Por el momento, considero que Dinamarca está en el TOP 4 y, por tanto, nos gustaría llegar a semifinales. Sin embargo, la dificultad para lograr una medalla es cada vez mayor durante las últimas temporadas. El principal motivo: ha crecido la cantidad de equi-pos con la calidad de jugar a pleno nivel y, al menos, considero que existen un total de 10 países con po-sibilidades de medalla. Mis favoritos: Croacia, España y Francia.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo B?Los partidos con Islandia y Macedonia son compli-cados, últimamente; pero, además, veo a Rusia en el camino de regresar a la cima del balonmano otra vez. Vamos a tener muchos partidos interesantes en el Grupo B. No considero tan difícil el Grupo A pero, naturalmente, me gustaría evitar a Francia, y Alemania es otro rival duro. Sin embargo, Montenegro ha de-mostrado un gran nivel, últimamente, así que estaría muy contento de terminar el Grupo B con la primera plaza para evitar un cruce con ellos.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clu-bes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?En Dinamarca conocemos bastante el balonmano es-pañol, por la presencia de muchos jugadores daneses en clubes españoles los últimos años: el FC Barcelona, el BM Atlético de Madrid, el Ademar y el Portland San Antonio. Por el momento, considero que el FC Barce-lona es el mejor equipo de España y, tal vez, el mejor equipo del mundo.

¿Qué conoces de Sevilla, sede para los partidos del Grupo B?No mucho, la verdad. Nunca he estado en Sevilla, pero tengo muchas ganas de visitar Sevilla y Andalucía, en general.

Hablar de Macedonia es hacerlo de Lazarov. Echan-do un ojo a las estadísticas del equipo, es el que jugador que sobresale. Fue el máximo goleador del Campeonato del Mundo de 2009, donde consiguió la mayor cifra goleadora que se ha conseguido nun-ca en una cita mundial. El zurdo Kiril Lazarov mostró la misma brillantez en el Campeonato de Europa de 2012 disputado en Serbia; liderando a su equi-po hacia una magnífica quinta posición. Lazarov, actualmente en las filas del campeón de la Super Globe, el BM Atlético de Madrid; es la pieza clave del juego macedonio, el goleador y también el líder del equipo. Así, el sentimiento suyo y el de su equi-po fue de decepción cuando no consiguieron, en el preolímpico de Suecia, clasificarse para los Juegos Olímpicos de 2012. Su entrenador, Zvonko Shundo-vski (que también ocupa el banquillo del Constanta, campeón rumano) confía en los goles de Lazarov y Naumce Mojsovski, líder del campeón de la liga macedonia, el Metalurg Skopje.

Consi-dero que tenemos muchas posibilidades de superar la fase de grupos pero, de octavos de final en ade-lante, los partidos son a todo o nada.

Los equipos nacionales qatarís de las categorías juve-nil y júnior son los campeones del continente asiático; mientras que el equipo absoluto es subcampeón conti-nental, tras alcanzar la final del Campeonato de Asia y perder por poco frente a Corea. ¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clu-bes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?He crecido escuchando y leyendo muchas cosas del balonmano español durante los últimos 30 años, y he aprendido mucho de Laguna, un gran técnico. A nivel de clubes, me gusta el BM Granollers; y con respecto a jugadores, Rodrigo Salinas.

¿Qué conoces de Sevilla, sede para los partidos del Grupo B?Sevilla es una ciudad repleta de historia y gente muy amable, con una tradición y una cultura que me gus-taría conocer y aprender.

HISTORY

The city of Zaragoza, built on the Ebro River valley, was founded by the Romans of the Iberian settle-ment of Salduba with the name of Caesar Augusta. These centuries are famous of its great splendor due to Roman Theatre or the Wall surrounding the city. With the end of the empire the city of Zaragoza was under the reign of Suevi and Visigoths. After being occupied by the Saracen Musa ibn Nusair in the seventh century the town became known as “Medina Al-Baida Saraqusta “ (Zaragoza the white) during the new era of growth of the city.

Alfonso the Battler recaptured the city for Christians in 1118 and this town became the capital of the Kingdom of Aragon, the present situation of this city. This mix of cultures provokes a significant growth of architectural contrast which makes Zaragoza as a unique city. The Aljafería Palace, the Cathedral of Salvador (La Seo) or the Church of San Pablo are the best examples of the UNESCO World Heritage. Also it should be mentioned the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar, the largest church of Spain of the Baroque period.

HISTORIALa ciudad de Zaragoza, erigida sobre el valle del río Ebro, fue fundada por los romanos sobre el asentamiento íbero de Salduba con el nombre de Caesar Augusta. Siglos de esplendor de los que aún hoy Zaragoza es testigo gracias al Tea-tro romano o a la Muralla que rodeó la ciudad. Con el fin del imperio pasó a manos de Suevos primeros y de Visigodos después. Tras ser ocu-pada por el sarraceno Musa ibn Nusair en el S. VII. la ciudad pasó a conocerse como “Medina Al-Baida Saraqusta” (Zaragoza la blanca) en una nueva época de crecimiento en la ciudad.

Alfonso el batallador recuperó la ciudad para los cristianos en 1118 y la convirtió en la ca-pital del Reino de Aragón, papel que ha con-servado hasta el día de hoy. De esta mezcla de culturas surge el contraste arquitectónico que hace de Zaragoza una ciudad única. El Pala-cio de la Aljafería la Catedral del Salvador (La Seo) o la Iglesia de San Pablo, patrimonios de la humanidad por la UNESCO, son algunos de los mejores ejemplos de ello. Todo sin olvidar la Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora de El Pilar, el templo barroco más grande de España.

Durante el pasado siglo la capital de Aragón se consolidó como una me-trópoli moderna europea. Con más de 660.000 habitantes, Zaragoza sigue siendo hoy uno de los principales focos económicos, sociales y culturales de España. Su sede como Secretariado de Naciones Unidas para la Década del Agua de la UNESCO , la Exposición Internacional de Zaragoza en 2008 o sus excelentes comunicaciones así lo demuestran.

El Pabellón Príncipe Felipe, edificado en 1990 sobre 27.300 m2, tiene ca-pacidad para 11.000 espectadores y, hoy en día, es el feudo de dos de los principales equipos de elite en Zaragoza: el BM Aragón y el CAI Zaragoza.

Además, ha sido testigo de multitud de eventos deportivos (Copa del Rey de Baloncesto en 1991 y 2005, Copa del Rey de Balonmano en 2000 y 2008) y artísticos, con importantes grupos musicales y cantantes de por medio: The Who, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Guns and Roses, Leonard Cohen, Mark Knoplfer y Oasis.

Por tanto, vamos a tratar de lograr la mejor plaza posible en el Grupo C y, a partir de ahí, pensar en el rival del cruce de octavos de final.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo C?Los principales rivales son Eslovenia y Polonia, ¡pero no debemos subestimar a nadie! En el Grupo D, todos los oponentes son complicados, pero nos gustaría evitar a Croacia, España y Hungría.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clubes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?Soy un gran seguidor de la Liga ASOBAL, el BM Atlético de Madrid y el FC Barcelona destacan desde hace muchos años. Para el equipo español es muy importante el hecho de ser un gran colectivo (su principal arma) y jugar en casa, con jugadores del nivel de Sterbik y Cañellas.

Goals for the Olympic period until 2016Our goal is to gain experience as a team by taking part in all big competitions until the2016 Olympic Games and, when the time comes, we will try to be as good as wewere in Belgrade.

Goals for the first event of the Olympic period: Spain 2013Teams depend on the state of their key players. Because the World Championshiptakes placein the middle of a very difficult season, a single injury could change everything or destroy all our hopes. We will try to get the best possible group position, and after that we will think about our rivals in the knockout rounds.

Which rival is the most powerful oneon Group C?Poland and Slovenia, of course, but the other ones should not be underestimated, as they are very tricky! The second group is a very strong one: we would like to avoid Spain and Croatia. Hungary is also very strong, so whoever we play against, it will not be easy.

What do you know of Spanish Handball? Which Spa-nish clubs and players are right now the better ones for you?I follow the Spanish League: the Barcelona and the Atlético have been outstanding for years. I believe that the most important thing for the national team is the collective fe-eling and the fact of playing at home. With regard to the players I think that the most outstanding ones are Sterbik and Cañellas, they behave like a team and that is a very powerful weapon!

En octavos de final nos gustaría evitar a los oponentes más duros del Grupo D: España y Croacia.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo C?El alcance de todos los rivales es grande, y es difícil señalar a uno o dos porque están jugando con diferentes estilos de balonmano. Todos los oponentes en octavos de final van a mostrar un nivel alto durante la fase de grupos. De todas formas, vamos a intentar ganar todos los partidos, indepen-dientemente del rival que tengamos en frente.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clubes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?He jugado algunos años en España y, por tanto, sé que el nivel de balonmano español es muy alto. Hay un montón de equipos importantes que, además, están mostrando un ren-dimiento muy alto en las competiciones continentales.

¿Qué conoces de Zaragoza, sede para los partidos del Grupo C?Zaragoza es una de las principales ciudades de España, con una gran historia detrás. Además, tiene unas excelentes instalaciones deportivas y ha acogido una gran cantidad de eventos deportivos de gran nivel en el pasado.

Goals for the Olympic period until 2016Main goals of Slovenian men’s national handball team in the period till 2016 are constant participation on big handball events such as World championships and European championship. All this events will gain experience of our players and the will be excellent preparation for Olympic Games in Rio 2016.

Goals for the first event of the Olympic period: Spain 2013Our first goal is to achieve good placement in the group phase. This placement can give us a great opportunity in knock-out matches.

Which opponent is more powerful on Group C?All national teams of WCh are high quality teams. In or-der to win each match, the team has to give their maxi-mum regardless of the opponent. In the eight-finals we would like to avoid the strongest teams in group D: Spain and Croatia.

Which opponent is the most powerful on Group C?All the opponents are powerful. It is hard to list one or two, because they are playing different style of handball. All the opponents which will come through to the eight-finals have to show great performance in group phase. We will try to win every match regardless to the opponent.

What do you know about Spanish Handball? Which Spanish clubs and players are right now the main ones for you?I have played a few years in Spain therefore I know the Spain handball quiet well. There are so many good teams and they show great performance in European club competitions.

What do you know about Zaragoza, venue for the Group C?Zaragoza is one of the main Spanish cities with great history. It has great sports facilities and it hosted a lot of major sports events in the past.

Head CoachObjetivos de Polonia para el próximo ciclo olímpico2016 es muy importante para nosotros por la cita olímpica en Brasil y por el Campeonato de Europa de Polonia 2016. Nos gustaría estar y completar un gran papel en todos los eventos de 2013, 2014 y 2015; y la idea es integrar a los jóvenes con jugadoras experimentados presentes en el Campeonato del Mundo de 2007 y 2009. El principal ob-jetivo es centrar el trabajo en el Campeonato de Europa de Polonia 2016.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo C?Algunas personas opinan que tenemos el grupo más sen-cillo, pero es mentira. En el balonmano de hoy en día, sobre todo en citas así, nunca hay rivales fáciles. Con respecto a los oponentes del Grupo D, Croacia y España son favoritos, pero es difícil decir qué equipo es más poderoso, no sa-bemos qué jugadores van a jugar con cada combinado. El objetivo es terminar en primer o segundo lugar del Grupo C, y así evitar a los mejores del Grupo D en octavos de final.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clubes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?He disputado muchos partidos contra España y contra equipos españoles, y nunca ha sido fácil. Los clubes más famosos son el FC Barcelona Intersport y el BM Atlético de Madrid, y los jugadoras más decisivos son Rocas y Tomás en los extremos, y Aginagalde en el pivote.

¿Qué conoces de Zaragoza, sede para los partidos del Grupo C?No mucho, ¡sólo sé que en Zaragoza hay grandes aficiona-dos al balonmano! La verdad, espero que terminen satisfe-chos por el espectáculo de todos los partidos del Grupo C.

Goals for the Olympic cycle until 20162016 will be a special year for polish handball because we host the EHF EURO; we also hope to reach the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Until then, we want to do our best in the 2013 and 2015 WCh and in the 2014 ECh. I would like to introduce some new players to the team and to integrate them with the more ex-perienced ones that have won the WCh medals in 2007 and 2009. Our main goal right now is the 2016 event in Poland.

Which rival is the most powerful one in Group C?Some say that we have an easy group but that’s not true. In today’s handball, especially in the WCh finals, there are no easy opponents. As for Group D, Spain and Croatia are the favorites, but it’s hard to say at the moment which team is the most powerful one, we don’t know which players will participate in the WCh in January. Our goal is to be the 1st or the 2nd ones in our group and to avoid the best teams of Group D in the eight-finals.

Goals for the Olympic period until 2016Our team is made of young players mainly, therefore our main goal is to gain some experience and to show a smooth game (without any sharp drop) during this period. Undoub-tedly we will try to take part in all the top champions-hips during this period and of course our main goal is to take part in the 2016 Olympics.

HISTORYThe first remains of Madrid were found in the seventh century and belong to the Visigoths. However, the importance of Mayrit, found by Muhammad I in the ninth century, is remarkable during the years of Moorish presence in the peninsula.

Composed of the Crown of Castile in 1083 during the reign of Alfonso VI, Madrid is chosen by the Spanish monarchs to house the Court and abandon Toledo in 1561. The Plaza Mayor, found at the beginning of the seventeenth century, has an important influence on the first major economic boost in Madrid and, today, is a tourist attraction for millions of visitors along with the Royal Palace, built on the ruins of the Palace of Madrid between eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Madrid is a cultural tourism epicenter of Spain and is the third most populated urban center of the continent, after London and Berlin.

Ubicada en el Barrio de San Fermín, a orillas del Río Manzanares, la Caja Má-gica es uno de los pilares del proyecto olímpico de Madrid 2020. Un complejo multiusos de factura colosal, sede del Mutua Madrid Open, el principal evento tenístico en territorio español. Además, ha sido testigo, durante la Temporada 2010/2011, de los partidos de Liga ACB y Euroliga del Real Madrid CF de Baloncesto.

This center is located in the Barrio de San Fermin on the banks of the Manzanares River, and is one of the pillars of the Madrid 2020 Olympic project. The CAJA MAGICA CENTER is a multipurpose complex, home of the Mutua Madrid Open and the venue of principal tennis events in Spani-sh territory. In addition, the ACB League Competition and Real Madrid CF Basketball Euroleague were celebrated in this center during the season 2010/2011.

Los problemas físicos han apartado a Antonio García de los últimos eventos, pero ahora está muy contento de po-der vestir otra vez la camiseta española. Por otra parte, Gonzalo está aquí porque queríamos repartir la carga de trabajo con tres porteros.

¿Qué conoces de Madrid, sede para los partidos del Grupo D?No conozco Madrid, pero sé que es una ciudad bo-nita con muchos grandes lugares. Tengo la idea de hacer turismo y conocer más cosas de Madrid.

Head CoachObjetivos de Hungría para el próximo ciclo olímpicoHungría ha mejorado durante las últimas citas y nos gustaría mantener el nivel para permanecer en el TOP 8 hasta 2016. Los mejores jugadores de Hungría han superado la barrera de los 30 años, pero esperamos que estén con nosotros para ayudar a lograr el objetivo. Además, nos gustaría formar a los jóvenes talentos para estar en Río 2016 con ellos.

Objetivos de Hungría para el Campeonato del Mun-do de 2013El objetivo de Hungría es el mismo: pensar y jugar par-tido a partido para permanecer en el TOP 8. El primer paso es llegar a octavos de final y, sólo entonces, pen-sar en el próximo paso.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo D?Tenemos mucho respeto por todos los rivales y es-tamos entrenando para superar a cada uno de ellos. Naturalmente, España es el oponente más importante: han logrado resultamos muy positivos en el último ci-clo olímpico y, además, tienen una gran oportunidad para ganar el título por jugar en casa. Nos gustaría terminar entre los tres primeros del Grupo D, todo depende del resultado en los partidos entre Croacia, España y Hungría. En el Grupo C, el caso es parecido: Corea del Sur, Eslovenia, Polonia y Serbia son rivales de parecido nivel.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clu-bes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?La cultura y los resultados del balonmano español son respetables. Mi colega en el cargo, Valero Rivera, está muy cómodo y estoy “celoso” de él: tiene dos jugadores de clase en cada lugar del campo. Además, los clubes españoles son poderosos, con el BM Atlético de Madrid y el FC Barcelona a la cabeza; jugando un balonmano muy creativo, mirando hacia delante en todo momento y fabricando muchos jugadores de primera línea y pivotes de calidad. Ha impartido algunos cursos de balonmano en España, y sé que la cultura balonmanística está muy desarrollada allí.

¿Qué conoces de Madrid, sede para los partidos del Grupo D?He estado en Madrid para jugar partidos de Champions, y me alegro de disputar allí la primera fase: significa que vamos a jugar en el mejor escenario posible, con la mejor pista, la mayor presencia de público y con todas las oportunidades.

Goals for the Olympic period until 2016The Hungarian team improved its expectations in the last competitions: the World Championship of 2011, the European championship and the Olym-pic Games of 2012. We would like to keep our position among the first eight best groups in the world until 2016. I hope that our best players, who are in their thirties, will stay with us to help us, together with the 28 and 29 years old players of the Hungarian team. We would also like to train our young talents until Rio.

Goals for the first event of the Olympic period: Spain 2013Our main goal is always the same: to think and to play step by step, and to stay among the best eight teams. Our first goal is to qualify for the eight-finals: then we will be able to think about our next step.

Which opponent is the most powerful one in Group D?Naturally, we respect all our rivalsand we are training our-selves very carefully against them. I think Spain has the best team of Group D: they got very good results in the last Olym-pic period, from 2008 to 2012. I believe that the Spanish team has the biggest chance to win the World Championship, specially playingat home. We would like to qualify for the eight finals,among the first three positions of Group D and I am sure that the results of the matches between Spain, Croatia and Hungary will depend on the outcome of the matches, valued day by day. The teams in group C are very similar, I think Serbia, Poland, Slovenia and Korea could be at the same level, but naturally these teams could change during the new Olympic period.

What is your knowledge of Spanish Handball? Which clubs and players from Spain are right now the main ones for you?The results and the handball-culture in Spain are both very respectable. My colleague, Valero Rivera is in a very com-fortable position, I am jealous of him, because he has two world-classplayers for every position. The Spanish club teams, especially the Barcelona and the Atlético de Madrid are very strong, and Spanish handball is very creative, always thinking forward; the players are also very strong in line pla-yer/pivot and back positions. I used to givehandball courses in Spain, and I know that Handballculture is also very well developed in Spain.

What do you know about Madrid, the venue for Group D?I have been in Madrid during the Champions League-mat-ches. I am happy that we will play in the group of the ho-me-team, because it means that the context of our prelimi-nary group will be the best one: think about the infrastructure, the spectators, the playing halls and all the opportunities!

Objetivos de Egipto para el próximo ciclo olím-picoEl objetivo de Egipto es llegar a los Juegos Olímpi-cos, el mayor evento deportivo del planeta. Impor-tante para el deporte egipcio en general, y para mi carrera en particular: sería mi quinta presencia, un record para cualquier deportista de Egipto. Además, nos gustaría aspirar en el futuro a luchar por una medalla olímpica con la camada de jóvenes talentos de Egipto.

Objetivos de Egipto para el Campeonato del Mundo de 2013El objetivo para el Campeonato del Mundo de 2013 es alcanzar los octavos de final, fundamentalmente, porque significaría que hemos derrotado a los rivales directos del Grupo D.

¿Qué rivales son peligrosos en el Grupo D?España es el rival más duro por jugar en casa. Y de cara a los octavos de final, me gustaría evitar a Po-lonia.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clubes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?Conozco el balonmano español. La Liga ASOBAL es una de las ligas más potentes del mundo, con equi-pos como el BM Atlético de Madrid y el FC Barcelona, con jugadores de enorme nivel como Raúl Entrerríos y José J. Hombrados.

¿Qué conoces de Madrid, sede para los partidos del Grupo D?Fantástica, la capital de España es una ciudad her-mosa: una de las ciudades más maravillosas y famo-sas del planeta. Estamos muy contentos de poder jugar la primera fase en Madrid.

The Spanish league is one of the strongest league competitions all over the world, with teams like the Atlético de Madrid and the Barcelona, and with pla-yers like Enterrios and Hombrados.

What do you know about Madrid, the venue for Group D?Well, it’s the Spanish capital, a beautiful city, one of the wonderful cities all over the world and one of the most famous ones. We are very happy that our group shall play in Madrid!

Goals for the Olympic period until 2016Our aim, for the period leading to 2016, is to focus on developing our junior players to a more competitive level. Our juniors need to have an ea-sier transition into the national team and they also need to provide more strength to future generations. At the moment, Oceania doesn’t have an Olympic qualifying path, so it’s important for us that we develop a national team worthy of that consideration.

Goals for the first event of the Olympic period: Spain 2013Our goal, for the 2013 World Championship, is to improve on our last performance in Sweden. We are aiming to improve on our results against the top tier teams, and in the latter stages, bring home a win or two.

Which rival is the most powerful one on Group D?Spain and Croatia carry big reputations and I expect them to dominate the preliminary round in our group. We don’t mind who we play against. We have had only two international matches in the last two years, against New Zealand, so we feel privileged that we have a chance to play any international match at all.

What is your knowledge of Spanish Handball? Which Spanish clubs and players are right now the better ones for you?Spain can be very proud of its contribution to Interna-tional Handball. Especially, in recent years, clubs like BM Atlético Madrid and Ademar León have taken han-dball to a new level that most of the world continues to aspire to. Spain is one of the leading nations in handball and I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens in the background of Spanish handball; to see the work that goes into this success.

What do you know about Madrid, the venue of Group D?I am excited to be based in Madrid. It will be my first visit to the city. Most of what I know about the city is because of its international sporting success. Though, I have an interest in history and photography, so I’m planning to take time after the Championship to learn about Madrid’s past and to take lots of photos!

De todas formas, no estoy preocupado de los rivales; hemos jugado dos partidos en los últimos dos años, contra Nueva Zelanda, y nos sentimos unos privilegiados por tener la oportunidad de jugar partidos de semejante nivel.

¿Qué conoces del balonmano español? ¿Qué clu-bes y jugadores de España son referentes para ti?La gente de España debe estar orgullosa por cómo ha ayudado a desarrollar el balonmano en todo el mun-do. Los últimos años, clubes como el BM Atlético de Madrid y el BM Ademar han adquirido un nivel que muchos otros aspiran a tener. España es uno de los líderes del balonmano en todo el mundo y tengo mu-chas ganas de cómo trabajan la base, para conocer el trabajo que ha conducido al éxito.

¿Qué conoces de Madrid, sede de los partidos del Grupo D?Estoy encantado de tener la sede en Madrid. Nunca he visitado la ciudad, y la mayoría de mis conocimientos sobre ella dependen de otros éxitos deportivos. Ade-más, tengo un gran interés por la historia y la foto-grafía, así que estoy pensando en pasar unos días allí para tomar algunas imágenes.

The city of Guadalajara is proud to be one of the host cities of the World Handball Cham-pionship. This competition is one of the highest-level sporting events that took place in our city and for this purpose we have spent so much time not to disappoint the trust and expectations that the Royal Spanish Handball Federation has put in us. We hope this event will have a great success.

The Multipurpose Hall of Guadalajara is the playing venue for this Championship and it has exceptional conditions to host the President’s Cup, a tournament for all teams which in the end cannot access the fight for medals, and that Spain won in 2009 during the World Championship in Croatia.

In recent years the city of Guadalajara is showing its organizational level of major spor-ting events. The last year Olympic Qualification Women´s Handball Tournaments are the example of this level. And this is the result of the strong commitment of the city council of Guadalajara to promote the sporting activity. I think that events of this level define our city in all ways. One of them is the sport characteristic, because our children, our fans can enjoy the game of their idols. Also we managed to achieve a lot regarding the tou-rism area. Thousands and thousands of people are visiting our city each year to attend the competitions celebrated here, which is a unique showcase for the city to promote our rich historical and artistic heritage, our gastronomy, our excellent parks , our culture, our people ...

So we are looking forward to welcoming this Championship with tremendous illu-sion. It is a huge opportunity for us to promote the city of Guadalajara, a town that in a very short time has become the example city of national sport. Even so we are not satisfied. We want to go further.

Para Guadalajara es motivo de orgullo ser una de las anfitrionas del Campeonato del Mundo de Balonmano. Constituye uno de los eventos deportivos de mayor nivel que se han desarrollado en nuestra ciudad y por eso llevamos tiempo trabajando para no defraudar la confianza y expectativas que la Federación Española de Balonmano ha depositado en nosotros. Esperamos que sea todo un éxito.

El lugar en el que se celebrará, el Palacio Multiusos de Guadalajara, reúne unas condi-ciones excepcionales para albergar la Copa Presidente, torneo que enfrentará a aquellas selecciones que finalmente no puedan acceder a la lucha por las medallas, y que Espa-ña ganó en 2009, en el Mundial disputado en Croacia.

Guadalajara, en los últimos años, está demostrando que está a la altura, a nivel orga-nizativo, de grandes competiciones deportivas. Lo hizo, por ejemplo, el pasado año, acogiendo el preolímpico de Balonmano femenino. Y eso es fruto del firme compromiso que el Ayuntamiento de Guadalajara tiene con la promoción del deporte. Creo que el acoger eventos de estas características reporta mucho a nuestra ciudad en todos los sentidos. El primero, el deportivo, porque nuestros niños, nuestros aficionados tienen la posibilidad de disfrutar del juego de sus ídolos. Pero también es mucho lo que conse-guimos a nivel turístico. Miles y miles de personas visitan al año nuestra ciudad para acudir a las competiciones que aquí se realizan, lo que constituye un escaparate ini-gualable para la promoción de lo nuestro: de nuestro rico patrimonio histórico-artístico, de nuestra gastronomía, de nuestras excelentes zonas verdes, de nuestra cultura, de nuestras gentes…

Por eso, acogemos con una tremenda ilusión este Campeonato. Es una grandísima oportunidad para la promoción de Guadalajara, una ciudad que en muy poco tiempo se ha convertido en referente del deporte nacional. Aún así, no nos conformamos. Quere-mos ir a más.

HISTORIAGuadalajara está enclavada entre las comarcas de La Alcarria y la Campiña del Henares, a 35 minutos por carretera de Barajas. Con cerca de 90.000 habitantes, la localidad de Guadalajara surge a caballo entre el Siglo VIII y el Siglo IX, bajo dominio árabe, hasta ser conquistada en 1085 por parte de Alfonso VI. Una época de esplender cultura, todavía visible en el plano del centro urbano, junto con el Alcázar y la Catedral de Santa María, edificada sobre una mezquita.

La familia de Mendoza, asentada en Guadalajara durante la segunda mitad del Siglo XIV, es artífice del impulso económico y urbano, hasta abandonar la localidad alcarreña en el Siglo XVII. El Palacio del Infantado es, por en-cima de otros monumentos, el mejor testigo de una época brillante para Guadalajara.

A partir de entonces, Guadalajara es mermada de forma sistemática en diversos conflictos, hasta terminar devastada en 1939. Sin embargo, las reformas emprendidas en toda la zona durante las últimas décadas, han convertido a Guadalajara en una localidad con un desarrollo urbanístico sostenible, capaz de cumplir con todas las necesidades de una urbe mo-derna y cosmopolita.

Historia

HISTORYGuadalajara is located between the districts of La Alcarria and countryside of Henares, 35 minutes drive from Barajas. With about 90,000 residents, the town of Guadalajara arises straddling the eighth century and the ninth century, under Arab rule, until it was conquered in 1085 by Alfonso VI. A time esplender culture, still visible in the plane of the city center next to the Alcázar and the Cathedral of Santa Maria, built over a mosque.

Mendoza’s family, seated in Guadalajara in the second half of the fourte-enth century, is the architect and urban economic momentum, until leaving the town in the seventeenth century alcarreña. The Palace of the Infantry is above other monuments, the best witness of a brilliant period for Gua-dalajara.

Thereafter, Guadalajara is systematically undermined in various conflicts, to finish in 1939 devastated. However, the reforms undertaken throughout the area in recent decades, have made Guadalajara in a locality with a sustainable urban development, able to meet all the needs of a modern cosmopolitan city.

PALACIO MULTIUSOSEdificado en el barrio de Aguas Vivas, sobre una superficie de más de 5.000 m2, el Palacio Multiusos de Guadalajara es el perfecto exponente del desa-rrollo urbanístico del municipio alcarreño. Con capacidad para 5.894 especta-dores, el balonmano fue protagonista el día del estreno del recinto deportivo, el 18 de junio de 2010, con motivo del partido de clasificación para el Cam-peonato del Mundo de 2011, entre España y Portugal, con victoria final del combinado español.

En dos años de vida, ha sido testigo de numerosos eventos de gran magnitud: la Supercopa de España de fútbol sala en 2010, el Campeonato de España de Clubes de gimnasia artística y deportiva en 2011, y la fase clasificatoria de balonmano femenino para Londres 2012, el pasado mes de mayo, con la presencia de todas las guerreras olímpicas, a la postre, medalla de bronce en el certamen olímpico.

PALACIO MULTIUSOSBuilt in the neighborhood of Living Waters, on an area of over 5,000 m2, the Multipurpose Hall of Guadalajara is the perfect example of urban de-velopment in the municipality alcarreño. With capacity for 5894 specta-tors, handball starred at the premiere of the sports ground, on June 18, 2010, during the qualifying match for the 2011 World Championship, between Spain and Portugal, with the Spanish team victory .
