There are three major types of

learners: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.

No caregiver wants to see a child get hurt.

But avoiding physical risk altogether is risky in its own

Creating change is an important learning experience for a young child. When she discovers she can make a

difference in her world – large or small, accidental or deliberate,

neat or messy – she awakens to the idea that she has the power

Repetition helps the brain learn to move the muscles

automatically – one of the brain’s biggest priorities

in the early years.

Children deserve the right and the room to move.

While safety seats, cribs, strollers and other “containers”

are needed at times to keep children safe, they also limit

children’s movements. Choose to give the child freedom to

move as much as possible.

Early Stimulation of the senses of smell, taste, and touch begins

instinctively and simultaneously through the

mouthing stage. . A young child has more sensory

receptors in her mouth than in any other part of

the body.

Early childhood development is comprised of thousands, if not millions

of tiny interrelated and interdependent

advancements occurring in the body and brain

Movement is at the forefront of all early

childhood development. Automaticity – movement without having to think about it – creates efficiencies in the

brain and frees up processing power for complex thinking, reasoning,

imagining, and inventing, and yes, learning to spell your

own name.

Children are born to take risks. They need to take risks so they learn courage,

perseverance, and independent decision making.

When you control a choice to “contain” a child, ask yourself if it’s necessary. Is the container

for the child’s safety and well-being? What will the container stop him from

It’s been well reported that within the first years of childhood, approximately 90

percent of the neural pathways in the brain will be set for life. Those pathways

A young child’s brain is concerned with developing the whole child – not just the

future student. Early childhood learning is a process of compiling tangible, physical,

real-life, in-the-moment experiences one on top of the next. And the reason is simple.

All learning, at any age, stands on the shoulders of prior knowledge – from the known

to the unknown. That’s how the brain is designed.

Origins of Learning

At our program, we believe that the senses are the filters through which we

internalize the world around us and come to know our own bodies. There are actually

seven senses: They include the familiar ones (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) plus

two more: our internal sense of balance (known as the vestibular system) and intuition

(our sense of spatial orientation and movement). Put simply, the senses are the very

Foreword

This handbook is to provide information regarding Holy Martyrs ARS Ashkhen Pilavjian Preschool.*

In the year of 1991, with the sponsorship of the Armenian Relief Society of Western U.S.A. Regional Executive,

Holy Martyrs A.R.S. Ashken Pilavjian Preschool was established. It is affiliated with Holy Martyrs Marie Cabayan

Elementary and Ferrahian High School, which is the first Armenian Day school to be established in the United States in

1964.

You are a Preschool family now. Holy Martyrs ARS Ashkhen Pilavjian Preschool is one of the schools in the Prelacy

Armenian Schools. The Prelacy Armenian Schools comprise a school system governed by the Board of Regents, which is appointed by the Prelate and the Executive Council of the Western Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America.

The School offers an all day developmentally appropriate program for children ages 2- 5 years. Pilavjian Preschool

is licensed by the State of California and has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) since 1999.

The administration and staff are committed to providing young children with optimum learning experiences and the best early childhood education, in conjunction with Armenian culture.

We believe that children grow and learn at their own pace at each developmental stage. Research has shown that children learn best through their own initiated activities and active exploration of their environment by using their five senses. We believe that children are protagonists in their learning. The program curriculum is based on the child development principles and theories of Piaget, Erikson, and Vygotsky. Teachers incorporate the Reggio Emilia approach and Outdoor Classroom philosophy while planning children’s learning experiences. The curriculum keeps children curious, makes them wonder, and offers real problem-solving challenges. The teacher encourages inquiry and supports the child’s own search for answers that extends children’s knowledge and scaffolds their learning. At Holy Martyrs ARS Ashkhen Pilavjian Preschool, the teachers/facilitators provide opportunities for children to acquire knowledge of Science, Math, Early Literacy, Music, and Drama through active inquiries and explorations.

Program Curriculum

Holy Martyrs A.R.S. Ashkhen Pilavjian Preschool’s curriculum framework for 2- 5 year olds is based on Developmentally Appropriate Practice with adaptations from the Creative Curriculum and is aligned with Child Assessment portfolio tools.

Developmentally appropriate practice means teaching in ways that match the way children develop and learn so as to promote their optimal development and learning. Teachers plan and modify the curriculum based on

• Developmental stages of children and how they learn.

• The individual strengths, abilities, needs, and interests of each child.

• The cultures of each child’s family and community. The program curriculum/The creative curriculum for Preschool is based on five fundamental principles. They guide

practice and help us understand the reasons for intentionally setting up and operating preschool programs in particular ways. These are the principles:

• Positive interactions and relationships with adults provide critical foundation for successful learning.

• Social-emotional competence is a significant factor in school success.

• Constructive, purposeful play supports essential learning.

• The physical environment affects the type and quality of learning interactions.

• Teacher-family partnerships promote development and learning. The daily schedule consists of a good balance of child initiated and teacher directed indoor and outdoor educational

activities. In the preschool, we offer a learning environment which emphasizes the following five developmental learning domains: Cognitive development, social emotional development, physical development, language arts and creative development. Cognitive Skills: Children acquire concepts in mathematics, science, social studies, health and other academic areas.

Social Skills: Children are provided many opportunities to develop social skills such as cooperating, helping and negotiating. Motor Skills: Children have daily opportunities to use large muscles by running, jumping and balancing. They use their small muscles by experiencing drawing, writing, using scissors and etc. Language Arts: Children acquire pre-reading skills both in Armenian and English languages. Aesthetic Skills: Children have daily opportunities for aesthetic expression and appreciation through art and music.

When using the Program Curriculum in planning, the following essential steps should be considered and implemented:

1. The daily schedule is flexible and responsive to the needs of the children.

2. Teachers plan activities based on family values, beliefs and language of children.

3. The indoor and outdoor classroom activities are planned in such a way that provide children with learning

opportunities through play, self-initiated learning, creative expression, large group, small group and child initiated

activities. Children also have opportunities to participate in sand, water and mud activities. The learning

experiences should be extended over several days, weeks or months.

4. Children are active participants in decision making about school rules, plans and activities.

5. Children have various opportunities to express their emotions in a variety of ways.

6. Teachers utilize materials and equipment that reflect the lives of children and families served. In addition, they

reflect the diversity in the society - gender, age, language and abilities.

7. On a daily basis, children have opportunities to work and play individually, in pairs, in small and large groups and

mixed age grouping for three and four year olds.

8. Teachers provide opportunities for children to participate in group projects and learn from one another.

9. Teachers respond to children’s interests and needs by: o Helping children explore new concepts and extend learning. o Using children’s interests, curiosity and knowledge to generate new activities and enhance learning.

10. To build children’s skills and knowledge, teachers use scaffolding techniques including, but not limited to, the following:

• Variety of teaching strategies and approaches.

• Many sources to foster children’s curiosity, extend their engagement, support self-initiated learning and

recognize what children have learned.

• Plan activities that are meaningful and achievable for children.

• Provide experiences that would extend children’s current understanding and knowledge about a concept.

• Create experiences for children that are purposeful and meaningful related to the key concepts of the

curriculum.

• Teacher and child interactions and relationships are essential components of effective curriculum.

• At Holy Martyrs A.R.S. Ashkhen Pilavjian Preschool, the lessons and activities are planned through the

process of scaffolding. Scaffolding helps a child perform skills at a higher level than he or she could by working independently. Teachers’ verbal directions, physical assistance, and probing questions help children figure out how to approach learning tasks, improve skills and acquire knowledge. As the research shows, a positive teacher/child relationship is crucial for their social development and academic success. A supportive relationship can have direct impact on children’s motivation, engagement, self-direction, cooperation and positive attitude toward the school.

Cultural Awareness: Introduction of Armenian and diverse cultures through various activites and presentations. Armenian holidays include: Cultural Month (October), Armenian Christmas, St. Vartanak, Paregentan, Trndez, Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide and Armenian Independence Day.

Assessment Plan

To support children’s learning and to identify their needs and interests, Pilavjian Preschool uses the Creative Curriculum/Teaching Strategies Child Assessment portfolio. The assessment method:

• Aligns with the curriculum goals and philosophy.

• Provides an accurate picture of all children’s abilities and the program.

• Provides valid and meaningful results for all learners.

• Is useful in daily curriculum planning.

• Is sensitive to child’s culture, language and is meaningful to each child’s setting.

• Obtains information in all areas of development - cognitive, language arts, social-emotional and physical development.

After child’s enrollment, the teacher will attempt to interact with children using the child’s own language. Through individual interaction or during small group/large group settings, teachers will observe each child using the following tools.

1. Daily anecdotal records 2. Photographs 3. Developmental learning assessment records 4. Child observation records 5. Obtain information from parents

a. Within three months of child’s enrollment, the formal findings will be shared with parents during a parent-teacher conference.

b. At the end of the initial conference, an Individual Educational Plan/Family Partnership plan will be devised by the teacher and parent.

c. In some cases, in order to serve children better, the program will make necessary referrals for testing or evaluation by a professional.

d. In addition, teachers, families and relevant specialists will have regular opportunities to participate in two way communication to discuss child’s progress, difficulties, and accomplishments to plan learning activities.

e. The information obtained from this process will be used in improving curriculum, adapting teaching practices and planning Program improvement.

f. The information gathered will assist teachers to identify child’s interests and needs and support individualized learning.

g. Within six months of the child’s enrollment and on an as needed basis, parents will have another opportunity for a second parent-teacher conference.

h. All individual child records will be kept confidential in secured cabinets in the classrooms or office accessible only to the child’s parents, child’s teachers and administration.

i. For additional services, the administration will provide information to a designated professional with parent authorization.

Parent Family Communication

Teachers will provide parents with following information:

• The purpose and the use of assessment.

• The condition that the child will be assessed. • How the results are interpreted and will be used to provide future learning opportunities for children.

• Request a list of individuals who can have access to the child’s file and to the assessment results.

• Each child’s file and portfolio are kept in a locked cabinet and are only accessible to the child’s teacher and the

administration.

Quality of Staff

Teachers and teacher assistants are experienced and have exceeded the Early Childhood Education State requirements. They are trained in Pediatric CPR and First Aid and Community Emergency Response (CERT). Staff members and faculty are all bilingual. In addition, they continue to update their education by attending college courses, conferences or workshops that are organized by NAEYC, respectable ECE organizations and the Board of Regents.

Teacher - Child Ratio

The following teacher- child ratios exceed the minimum requirements set by the State Department of

Social Services.

2-3 Year olds/one adult to every 6 children (children do not have to be

toilet -trained in this group)

3-4 Year olds/ one adult to every 8 children (must be fully toilet trained)

4-5 Year olds/ one adult to every 8-10 children (must be fully toilet trained)

Discipline and Conflict Resolution Policy

Physical or verbal abuse will not be allowed at Holy Martyrs ARS Pilavjian Preschool. No child will be denied

food, rest, or bathroom use as a consequence of inappropriate behavior. We ask that parents respect our discipline policy while in the School so that no child will be subjected to negative, punishing forms of discipline while at Holy Martyrs ARS Pilavjian Preschool.

Discipline at our School is not for punishment but for behavioral change. The ultimate goal is for children to become self-disciplined. With guidance and facilitation by teachers, the children are helped to solve discipline challenges, using their words and problem solving skills with each other to come up with mutually acceptable choices. Children are helped to redirect their inappropriate behavior by encouraging them to be part of the solution. In this way, it becomes a learning tool and gives children a sense of empowerment. By providing a "can do" environment and positive verbal guidance, we teach young children what "to do," not just what "not to do."

Search Policy

The School reserves the right to search and inspect all School-owned property, premises and items located on School premises, including but not limited to child belongings and cubbies. Such inspections may occur at any time, with or without advance notice or consent. Students and parents should not have any expectations of privacy in such items or locations. The School also reserves the right to search all students if the School Director or designee has a reasonable suspicion the student is violating or has violated a School rule, or regulation, including but not limited to pockets, purses and backpacks.

Nondiscrimination/Harassment

School programs and activities shall be free from discrimination, including harassment, with respect to the actual or perceived ethnic group, religion, gender, color, race, ancestry, national origin, physical or mental disability, age, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. The School prohibits the harassment of any student by the administration, including faculty or staff, another student or person at the School or at any School related activity. Harassment includes verbal, physical and visual conduct that creates an intimidating, offensive or hostile environment, or that interferes with daily School activities. Examples of such harassment include but are not limited to racial slurs, ethnic jokes, posting of offensive statements, posters or cartoons.

Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Policy

Children need protection because they are vulnerable and often unable to speak for themselves. The California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act provides the legal basis for action to protect children and to allow intervention by public agencies if a child is maltreated. All staff members are legally mandated to report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect.

Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Plan

Earthquake/disaster preparedness is an important aspect of the Holy Martyrs ARS Ashkhen Pilavjian

Preschool program operation. To save lives and minimize disruption, all School staff and students must be

prepared to respond quickly and responsibly to emergencies and disasters, such as earthquakes and fires. The

entire school campus is equipped with emergency disaster provisions. The school has an emergency plan and

the procedures are to be followed at the time of an earthquake or other emergency. Written emergency

procedures are posted in each classroom and the School’s parent board. Fire and earthquake drills are

practiced on an

ongoing basis so that in the event of an emergency, students, faculty and staff will be prepared to react promptly

and correctly to ensure everyone’s safety.

All of our teachers are trained in CPR, First Aid, and Disaster Preparedness Procedures by the Glendale

Fire Department (CERT). We are prepared to care for our students for up to 72 hours after an earthquake.

To further assure the safety of our students, we would like to ask the cooperation and assistance of our

parents in the following areas:

• Please do not call the school. We must have the phone lines open to communicate with the fire

department, police, and other governmental or emergency agencies.

• Anticipate delays on your way to School due to cluttered streets or traffic.

• Turn your radio to the local AM dial. Information and directions will be given over the radio.

• Please do not block our driveways.

The school will follow these procedures at the time of student release:

➢ All school entries will be closed immediately after an earthquake or emergency.

➢ Two temporary Student Release stations will be set up #1at Hayvenhurst parking entrance gate and

#2 at Hayvenhurst exit gate.

➢ Children will be released only to a parent or an individual designated by a parent, whose name is listed

on the Child’s Emergency Release Information Form. With this in mind, please make sure your

child’s emergency form is always up to date.

➢ Parents or their designated parties, who come for children, should approach Child Release Station #1

by the School’s Hayvenhurst parking lot entrance gate for verification of their Identification. (Picture

I.D. will be requested).

➢ Upon verification of the Identification parents or their designated parties will be given a Release Form

and will be directed to Child Release Station #2 at the School’s Hayvenhurst parking lot exit gate

where they will sign the children out.

➢ If evacuating the School becomes necessary, signs will be posted on the main gates advising

parents of the children’s new location.

SCHOOL OPERATIONAL DETAILS

Admission

Admission to the School is possible by placing a prospective student on the School's waiting list by

calling the School’s office. The waiting list for the next actual registration starts on the first day of October.

Children (except 2 years old) must be toilet trained in order to attend Holy Martyrs ARS A. Pilavjian Preschool.

The following are the guidelines for enrolling children in age appropriate classroom settings.

❖ A child must be 2 years old by September 1st to be admitted and placed into 2 year old groups.

❖ A child must be 3 years old by September 1st to be admitted and placed into 3 year old groups.

❖ A child must be 4 years old by September 1st to be admitted and placed into 4 year old groups.

Class assignments will be made by the Administration with teacher recommendations. The School

Administration reserves the right to make changes to class composition, including but not limited to, reassigning

children to other groups.

Each child will have a separate file containing enrollment, health and other confidential information.

These files will be kept in locked cabinets in the School office, to ensure confidentiality. Only parents, the child’s

teachers and the administration will have access to these files except as otherwise required by law.

The school reserves the right to admit and/or to dis-enroll any student for any reason in its sole

discretion.

Parent and Child Orientations

The School provides four formal orientations on the Program’s mission and philosophy.

1. Informative, personal tours of the school are scheduled by appointment during the program year.

2. During registration, parents are given detailed information regarding school operations.

3. A welcoming letter including orientation date, class location preschool necessities and the name of

the child’s teacher is mailed to families prior to the new program year.

4. A formal parent orientation is scheduled before the first day of school. At this meeting, parents are

given detailed information regarding the School’s policies, classroom curriculum and schedule, and

they meet their child’s teacher in the classroom.

In addition to the above four formal orientations, parents are welcomed to arrange visits to their child in

the School.

It is our mission to keep parents informed of the School’s ongoing programs. On a daily basis, parents

will receive notes regarding their children located in parent mailboxes.

Therefore, every week, parents will receive memos and bulletins via email, school website, or hard copies.

Transition

Starting a new school can be a difficult experience for parents and young children. We encourage parents and children to visit the School before and after enrollment.

To ensure a smooth transition from home to school, parents are encouraged to visit the School with their child during Summer Camp and to participate in designated activities.

Prior to making the transition from one group to another, teachers collaborate both with families to make the transition smooth for the child.

At the end of the year the teaching staff creates opportunities for the children to visit the next new age group classroom.

Children transitioning from Preschool to Kindergarten are given opportunities to visit the Cabayan Elementary school.

School Calendar

The School operates on a 10 month school year and follows the master calendar provided by the Board

of Regents of Western Prelacy Armenian Schools.

Days & Hours of Operation

Preschool hours are from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM five days per week.

Classroom activities begin at 8:30 AM.

The concept of time is an important aspect of children’s growth and

development. Therefore, it is important that children arrive to school on time each day.

Morning and afternoon extended care services are available for a nominal fee. Morning extended care

hours are 7:30-8:30 AM. Afternoon extended care hours are 3:00-5:30 PM. For fee schedule, drop-off/pick up

and penalties please contact the school office.

There is a late pick-up fee if your child is not registered for extended care on a monthly basis. Extended

care fees are found in the registration packet. For extended care services, please register your child by

completing a form at the office.

Parents are welcome to visit their child at any time and observe him/her using the class video monitor.

The School takes no responsibility nor does it assume any liability whatsoever for any harm, claim or

incident of any nature including, but not limited to, any injury, accident, illness, or death, or any loss or damage

to person or property occurring during or by reason of your child’s presence on campus before and/or after

normal school hours.

The following procedures will be taken if a child is not picked up passed the afternoon extended care

hours, and parents/guardians haven’t contacted the school:

A. An attempt will be made to contact individuals listed on the emergency form.

B. To ensure child’s safety, after a reasonable time period, if the child is not picked up, the local law

enforcement authorities will be notified.

Attendance/Arrival/Departure Policy

➢ According to state licensing, parents are responsible for signing in and signing out on the attendance

sheet at the time of their child’s entrance and exit.

➢ Under no circumstances will a child be released to a person, not even a staff member, who is not

listed on the child Release Form in the application packet without written authorization from the

parent/guardian.

➢ The School must be notified in writing immediately if there is a permanent change in the child pick-

up authorization form or Emergency Release Form.

➢ The persons who have your authorization to pick up your child (on the Child Release Form in application

packet) must be 18 years of age or older and have proper picture identification (i.e. driver’s license or

equivalent) and must be identified on the appropriate School form.

➢ Please notify the office as soon as possible if your child is going to be late or absent.

➢ The School reserves the right not to release a child to an adult who appears to be possibly impaired.

Security Attendant To maximize campus safety and security and to guide the traffic, the school has a security attendant on duty during the school hours.

Visitors and Guests

All visitors and guests are required to sign in at the main office at the beginning of their visit. Any visitor

or guest will be asked to provide his or her name, address, and the purpose of his/her visit. The School reserves

the right to request proof of identity.

The School Director or his/her designee in his or her discretion may refuse access to School grounds to

any visitor or guest.

Any visitor or guest who fails to sign in at the main office shall be considered an unauthorized person.

“Unauthorized person” shall also include any student who is currently dis-enrolled from the School or otherwise

not permitted to be on School grounds.

Loading, Parking, and Safety

Parents should enter the School from the School’s main entrances/gates. We ask that parents consider

our neighbors and honor the City of Los Angeles traffic rules by not blocking or turning in to any of the driveways

or making unlawful U-Turns in front of the School.

Park your SUV or Van in the Hayvenhurst parking lot.

When parking in the parking lot, please do not park in the Faculty designated parking spaces and, most

importantly, please keep your children next to you at all times.

Also, to assure parent and child safety on campus grounds and to avoid unnecessary traffic problems, we

request immediate departure after signing your child out.

Hayvenhurst parking lot gate will be closed after 9:30 AM.

The school is not responsible for any kind of damage caused to a vehicle while on school grounds, including but not limited to collision, theft, burglary and other damages.

Video Surveillance: To secure the health and safety of children and adults, video surveillance is installed

throughout School premises. (See Video Surveillance Policy below.) All activities are monitored and recorded.

Glass door entrance on Parthenia Street will be locked from 9:00 AM to

2:30 PM. To enter the school, please ring the bell and a staff member will open the door.

Persons unknown to the staff will be asked to enter from the office entrance and will be required to

show a picture ID.

Video Surveillance and Intercom

To secure the health and safety of children and adults, video surveillance is installed throughout School premises. (See Video Surveillance Policy below.) The School’s main gate entrance door is operated through

the intercom system and all activities are monitored and recorded. Parthenia school entry is 9:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.

To enter the school, please ring the bell and the gate/door will be opened by a staff member using the intercom system.

➢ To exit the school, please use the Green Exit Button located next to the gate/door.

➢ Persons unknown to the staff will be asked to enter from the office entrance and will be required to show a picture I.D..

Video Surveillance

Video surveillance may occur on School property. Video surveillance shall be limited to preschool

classrooms, hallways, stairwells, entrances, school grounds and other areas deemed appropriate by the School

Director. The School reserves the right to place cameras in a location known to require a greater need for

surveillance. Video surveillance shall not occur in areas where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy,

such as locker rooms, restrooms, counseling and nursing offices.

Under no circumstances shall the School’s video surveillance cameras be equipped to record audio or

other sound(s). Any audio capability shall be permanently deactivated prior to use by the School. Audio shall not

be part of the video recordings made, reviewed or stored buy the School.

The video surveillance system and all resulting recordings shall be located in a secure area and access

to the system and recordings shall be strictly limited by the Director or designee. Video images obtained by the

School shall be viewed by authorized School personnel as necessary. The School may rely on the images

obtained by the video surveillance cameras in connection with the enforcement of School policy and other

applicable law, including, but not limited to, student and staff discipline proceedings and matters referred to local

law enforcement agencies in accordance with applicable law.

Video images may become part of a student’s educational record in accordance with applicable law.

Video images or recordings may become subject to disclosure in response to a lawfully issued subpoena or

court order. In the case video surveillance is used for discipline proceedings or becomes a part of your child’s

educational record, you, the parent, may request to view the video subject t laws and regulations governing

privacy of student records if implicated for students other than your own child. The video recordings may be

erased as necessary or recorded over at the discretion of the School.

Videotaping and Photography

During School related activities, children may be photographed and videotaped. To respect the privacy of

students, parents, teaching staff and administration, we strongly discourage parents from posting School related

pictures or videos on any social networking sites.

Please be advised that the program is not and cannot be held responsible for photographs posted on any social networking site by a parent/guardian or any other person. The School strongly prohibits parents and guardians establishing pages and blogs on social media using the name of the School. Posting photos of teachers, administration and children is discouraged.

Tuition / Annual Registration / Other Program Related Fees

A non-refundable registration fee and other program related fees such as preschool supply fee,

earthquake preparedness fee, etc. are required at the time your application is submitted. Tuition and extended

care fees are due on the 16th of each month based on a 10-month school calendar. If tuition is not received on

time, a late fee specified in the contract will be assessed. If the tuition and late fees are not paid, the child will be

suspended from attending class until the tuition and late fee is paid in full. Persistent failure to timely pay tuition

may result in your child’s dis-enrollment from the School.

Uniforms / Other Clothing and Preschool Necessities

All students are required to wear their school uniforms daily, beginning with the first day of school. Holy

Martyrs ARS A. Pilavjian Preschool uniforms are unisex and consist of the class T-Shirt, hoodies, beanies and

navy/black pants or shorts (no jeans). For their own safety, children should wear sturdy and closed toe shoes.

Sandals are not recommended.

For information regarding uniform orders, please refer to Registration Information in the child’s

enrollment packet. Uniforms must be clean and tidy.

Each child should bring his/her own bedding, an extra pair of underwear and clothing. Please label all

his/her belongings and bring them to school in a sturdy plastic zippered bag. The school will not take

responsibility for any lost clothing or item.

Children’s bedding will be returned to parents at the end of each week to be washed. The bedding should be returned to school on the first school day the following week.

Each child must bring a clear or solid color backpack in the size 10W x 13H x 5D in. Toys and Accessories Children may bring a special sleeping toy for naptime such as a blanket or a soft small toy. Other than sleeping toys, no other toys will be permitted.

Field Trips & Educational Assemblies In order to expand the NAEYC’s standards, children will have opportunities to participate in educational field trips and in-house educational assemblies throughout the year. For each field trip a flyer will be sent home by the School to the parents describing the details of each field trip, such as cost and location. Field trips are considered to be part of the class activity; however, parents may opt their child out of such participation. By signing the Consent Form at the time of enrollment, parents also give their child permission to go on School field trips. Parents, who do not wish their child to participate in field trips, must inform the School during enrollment or at any time after enrollment. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children during these educational trips; however, parental participation is not mandatory. For each field trip, the School provides transportation with commercial school buses equipped with seat belts as required by law and nutrition for parents and children. To prevent program disruption, we ask that parents, who accompany their children to field trips, refrain from purchasing additional items from merchants or vendors at the field trip location. All School rules, regulations, policies and practices will be in effect during field trips, unless specifically stated. Parents of students who participate in School field trips or excursions are responsible for any and all associated costs. All individuals making the field trip shall be deemed to have waived all claims against the School and its teachers, administrators, and staff for injury, accident, illness, or death occurring during or by reason of the field trip or excursion. While conducting the field trip, the teacher will have a first aid kit in his or her possession. Before participating in any field trip, the School must have a signed Parent Permission Form, Waiver of Liability and Consent for Medical Treatment on file.

Birthdays and Holidays

Because each child is special and needs time to feel very important, we do recognize and celebrate

birthdays. Birthdays are celebrated each month.

For this special day, as a classroom project, children prepare cupcakes for their friends to celebrate.

Parents may not distribute favors on birthdays or special occasions due to unforeseen hazards that might

jeopardize the health and safety of our children.

Parents may obtain information from the Parent Directory in order to send Birthday/Party invitations.

On holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Year, Valentine’s Day, Vartananz,

Trndez, Easter, and Armenian Independence Day, the Program encourages children to congratulate each other

with a card, a drawing and /or a note. The teacher should be notified a day before the occasion. In this event,

all children must be included.

Physical/Dental Health & Nutrition

Physical / Dental Health Rules and Policies

All new and returning students are required to annually submit health forms, including Immunization Records, Pre-Admission Health History - Parent’s & Physician’s Reports & Parent Permission For Tylenol Administration. These health forms and documents must be completed and returned to the School before each school year begins. Children age 6 and under must have a physical exam each year. An annual dental exam is also recommended. Based on Immunization Law of California (SB277) and the decision made by Board of Regents, the school requires all children entering preschool to be current on all immunizations. Exemptions for religious or other personal beliefs will no longer be accepted.

Illness Policy

To minimize the spread of ailments among students, teachers and staff, please promptly notify the School Office if your child contracts a communicable disease. “Communicable diseases” include but are not limited to lice, chicken pox, f lu and colds. If a student becomes ill during the regular school day, he or she will be sent by the teacher to the School Office. Parents will be contacted at the telephone number on file to pick up their child, if necessary. At the School’s discretion, School administration may determine that, due to illness, parents must pick up the child before the end of the school day. The State of California Licensing Department forbids any sick child to attend the Program. Parents are asked to exercise good judgment and keep children at home while ill and to seek medical/dental attention as appropriate. Examples of symptoms that are signs of possible infection or disease are as follows:

1. Fever over 100 F. 2. Excessive irritability or unusual passivity. 3. Signs of a new cold: sore throat, watery eyes, etc. 4. Vomiting. 5. Diarrhea. 6. Inflammation of eye. 7. Abscess or draining sores. 8. Rash, unless the cause is determined to be non-contagious.

If you are unsure whether your child is sick, we urge you to contact a medical professional. The School reserves the right to request parents to provide written information by a physician licensed by the Medical Board of California about the status of their child’s health status and whether the child may safely return to school after the child has experienced a communicable disease.

Our policies and procedures are as follows:

1. Sick children must be excluded from the center until they are no longer contagious, so as not to expose other children. A physician's note is requested before your child is permitted to return to school.

2. A child must be kept home until he has gone at least 24 hours fever free with no medicine. This measure is put into place in order to keep a child from returning to school while medicated and his fever returning as the medicine wears off. The child will be turned away if he is brought back to school the morning after being sent home, unless a physician’s clearance is accompanied.

3. If your child arrives to School with symptoms of possible illness or tooth ache, you will be contacted immediately.

4. If we are unable to contact you or you cannot pick up your child, we will phone the persons listed on the emergency contact list.

5. If your child contracts a contagious illness, please notify the School immediately. 6. Please do not send any medication to School with your child. The staff is not authorized to give

medication to the children. Exceptions will be made for children who have life threatening conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, and epilepsy. (In such cases a medical consent form from the parent and physician will be required). When medications are to be administered for prolonged periods of time, it is the parent’s responsibility to maintain an adequate supply of medication, and to inform the School of changes in dosage, frequency of administration, or discontinuance of medication. Any changes in dosage or frequency of administration must be accompanied by a medical doctor’s note setting forth the changes. The School

assumes no liability for injury or death to a student in the event that parent(s) elect to have a School official administer medication to the student. Nothing in this policy shall prevent the School from declining to administer medication to a student.

7. All children will be inspected for lice as needed. This is very common practice and parents will be

informed and advised immediately if treatment is needed.

8. Children’s nails need to be clipped regularly and hair to be clean and well groomed. Tattoo and nail

polish are not allowed in the Center.

Tooth Brushing / Oral Health Policy • In order for children to brush their teeth, parent authorization is required.

• If authorized, children will brush their teeth at least once daily using a tooth brush provided by parents with no toothpaste.

• Toothbrushes will be replaced every 2 months or on as needed basis.

• Toothbrushes will be kept in special containers preventing cross contamination labeled with the child’s name.

• Every Friday, the Program will send toothbrushes and the containers home to be sanitized and returned to the

school the next school day.

• Parents must notify the office if there are any changes regarding their child’s oral health.

Accidental Injuries, Medical & Dental Emergencies Children naturally are very active and like to explore. At Pilavjian Preschool every effort is being made to make the

playground and the campus as safe as possible. However, no matter how hard we try to create a safe environment sometimes an unintentional injury may happen.

In the event of an accidental injury, the staff of the school, using its First Aid/CPR training, will assess the situation and determine what steps should be taken. Parents will be notified of all injuries by a phone call when deemed necessary and/or via written accident report at the time child pick up. If the injury requires medical attention above what the staff is certified to provide, 911 or other appropriate medical services will be called and the following steps will be taken:

1. While waiting for the emergency crew to arrive, one staff member will stay on the telephone line and will follow directions given over the phone by the emergency dispatch personnel.

2. A second staff member will notify the person (s) listed in the child’s emergency release form immediately. 3. Upon arrival of the emergency crew, the emergency release form will be presented to them. One staff member

will accompany the child to the nearest hospital chosen by the emergency personnel (in Los Angeles County, patients are transported by emergency crew to the nearest hospital that is available at that specific time).

The School assumes no liability for injury or death to a student in the event the School must administer reasonable treatment to a student without the consent of the parent(s) when the child is ill or injured during school hours and needs reasonable medical treatment and the parent(s) cannot be reached, unless the parent(s) have previously filed a written objection to any treatment other than first aid. If you have any questions or concerns related to your child’s health or this policy, please do not hesitate to consult with the School’s Administration.

Nutrition / Daily Rest

Our School provides children with three well-balanced meals:

• Breakfast – Served between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

• Lunch - Served between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

• Snack - Served between the hours of 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Our food menu is designed, prepared, served and stored in accordance with the US Department of Agriculture

(USDA).

Additional snack is served to children who stay after 3:30 PM. In case of food allergies, the school will make every effort to collaborate with parents in meeting each child’s nutritional needs. A sample of a 4-week cycle menu is posted on the parent board. If your child has any food allergies, please notify the teacher and the director. On a daily basis, preschool children will have a specific time for rest on school provided cots. Necessary resting materials/beddings will be provided by parents and will be sent home at the end of each week to be washed and cleaned.

Sippy Cup and Pacifier Policy and Transition

All children should use regular paper cups for fluids. Young children may use Sippy cups provided by Parents. Sippy cups are sent home on a daily basis to be washed and sanitized.

The use of pacifiers is acceptable and must be kept in a small clean zip top nylon bag and stored in child’s cubby. Pacifiers cannot be shared with other children. They are sent home daily to be washed and sanitized.

Transition: Families and teachers decide together when a child is developmentally ready to use a cup and wean off of pacifiers. They work simultaneously to achieve this goal.

Parent & Staff Communication Communication Open communication between parents and staff is the key to operating a harmonious school. Within 6 weeks of enrollment, the Administration and staff make every attempt to communicate with new families regarding the child’s progress. On a yearly basis, families are requested to respond to a family questionnaire/survey for program improvements. The results are discussed in a formal parent and staff meeting; goals are set and used for ongoing program planning and operations. To address any School related issues or concerns parents are encouraged to:

1. Direct their questions or concerns to the teacher personally on a daily or as needed basis, by calling the preschool office via phone or e-mailing at [email protected] .

2. Consult with the Director. 3. Consult with the School Board.

Note: Communication via social media or on teacher’s personal devices will not be replied.

Family Support Services • The school will provide information for families about programs and services of other organizations through

parent meetings, resource book available in the office, teachers and administration.

• The program will provide parents with information about consultants who can assist children with special needs, behavioral challenges or disabilities.

• The program provides families with various parent workshops organized by the school or local agencies on child development, nutrition or health.

Memos, Handouts and Monthly Calendar

It is our mission to keep parents informed of the School’s ongoing programs. Therefore, parents will

receive memos, bulletins in English and Armenian via email, robocall/text or will be placed in Parent mail boxes.

It is extremely important that all parents read all letters and bulletins sent by the School. Copies of

notices, memos and forms are available in the office.

Parent mailboxes located in your child’s classroom are for school use only. In order to communicate with

other parents, the school provides a Preschool Parent Directory. You may complete the section on the

registration form to authorize your information to be printed in the Preschool Parent Directory.

Parent/Family Participation/Involvement

We believe that young children grow and learn better in school when their parents become active participants in the school. It is the Program’s mission to encourage all families, regardless of family structure; racial, religious, and cultura l backgrounds; gender; abilities; or preferred language to volunteer in all aspects of the program such as:

1. School Board/Advisory Committee – Parents have the opportunity to become a School Board/Advisory Committee Member.

2. Fathers'Club, Mothers’ Club – A voluntary committee consisting of dedicated and committed parents who play an integral role in organizing fundraising events with program staff for the School.

3. Volunteering in classrooms- (reading a book, helping the teacher in activities, introducing their expertise), library, field trips, snack sales and etc.

4. Administration, families and staff are involved in evaluating Program’s goals and objectives at least annually.

5. The School administration has the sole discretion in determining all aspects of volunteer opportunities at the School and may at its sole discretion grant, deny, or change volunteer opportunities and assignments.

6. In addition to all of the above opportunities, parents may visit the school at any time during the program’s regular hours of operation.

7. Extended Family members are welcome in the classroom with prior notification and the authorization of the parent.

Termination of Services Policy

The School reserves the right to admit and/or dis-enroll any student at its sole discretion. Additionally, Program Services may be terminated to a family and/or child by the School’s administration in any of the following circumstances:

1. Parent/Guardian fails to abide by the provisions of this Handbook, the School’s agreement and/or contract. 2. Parent/Guardian disrupts the smooth and efficient operation of the Program and/or compromises the health

and safety of children or staff. 3. The Center is unable to meet the physical, social/emotional and developmental needs of the child. 4. The registered child compromises the health and safety of children, staff or himself. 5. Other reasons determined by School administration at their sole discretion.

An Additional Safety Note:

• Smoking in all areas of the facility is strictly prohibited. Firearms, other weapons, drugs such as merjuhanna that pose a hazard to children and adults are also prohibited. Discovery of such

items or persons carrying them will be reported to the authorities.
