Dear reader, Welcome to this new edition of Infosylva. The 23rd Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO) opens its doors at FAO Headquarters in Rome on Monday, 18 July and will be in session through Friday, 22 July. The session will coincide with the Fifth World Forest Week (WFW). The rich programme with more than 60 events aims to help “shape a new agenda for forests” in order to strengthen the role of forests and sustainable forest management in the achievement of the SDGs as agreed in Paris in 2015. Webcast of the opening The newly published FAO publication, Moving Forward 2014-15: Selected Achievements of the FAO Forestry Programme in 2014-15, provides an in-depth look into the work of FAO Forestry under the framework of its new strategic objectives. These objectives stem directly from FAO’s mandate to eradicate hunger globally and to feed an increasing world population by making agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable while conserving precious natural resources. (In English, Spanish and French) The widespread destruction of mangroves along the coastlines of Australia is related to climate change. It is feared that wider ecosystem disturbances will emerge as a consequence. (In English and French) With at least one-third of the people living in Mexican forests reportedly belonging to indigenous communities, Mexican authorities are increasingly recognizing the vital role these communities can play in protecting the biodiversity of forests. (In Spanish) Two months after the ravaging fires at Fort McMurray in Alberta that destroyed hundreds of hectares of forests, life seems to be emerging again as birds nest among the burnt trunks and new green sprouts emerge from the roots. (In French) Romanian forest authorities are creating a legal framework to inventory and protect the remaining virgin forests in the country, which covering about 200,000-300,000 hectares are reportedly the largest in Europe. (In English) And interested professionals, technicians and researchers won’t be discouraged by the 30-60 minute survey, Understanding the Forest-Water Nexus that aims to create a monitoring tool for global forest-water relationships. The survey can be completed online until the end of the month.

European countries aim for ‘Green Economy,’ reducing deforestation FAO News Europe and Central Asia 30/06/16 Greening the economy and improving air quality for a better environment and human health were two main themes of the Eighth Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference, held 8-10 June in Batumi, Georgia. Participating countries also emphasized agriculture, forest management, water and food as key focus issues contributing to a “Green Economy.” FAO and Norway strengthen long-lasting partnership FAO News 07/07/16 FAO and Norway have agreed to continue an already fruitful cooperation in the strategic areas of fisheries, the right to food, climate-smart agriculture, deforestation, gender equity and food loss and waste. Forestry and climate change are among the top priorities for Norway. The country is among the leading resource partners for joint FAO/UNDP/UNEP activities under UN REDD Program for reducing emissions, deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. Invasive gum tree pest threatens livelihoods FAO News Africa 08/07/16 FAO with support from the African Solidarity Trust Fund is implementing a regional project in the SADC region to strengthen controls of food security threats and better manage plant and animal pests and diseases. The project aims to reduce the incidences and occurrence of food contamination, animal and plant pests and diseases and their impact on the productivity of food crops, livestock, fisheries and forest resources thus enhancing safe intra-regional trade and contributing to improved food and nutrition security. Niue Biodiversity Teaching Kit for primary school students FAO News Asia and the Pacific 14/07/16 Primary school students in Niue will soon be learning about the biodiversity of flora and fauna which exists in their island country and the ecological importance. FAO has partnered with Landcare Research NZ to produce the biodiversity teaching kit for the primary schools of Niue. Ukraine and FAO sign 4-year cooperation agreement FAO News Europe and Central Asia 13/07/16 Under the terms of an agreement signed here today, FAO will work with Ukraine to help the country improve its business climate, develop the agri-food production chain, facilitate access to markets, improve food security, carry out land reform, better manage natural resources and cope with climate change. New FAO publications Moving Forward 2014-15: Selected Achievements of the FAO Forestry Programme in 2014-15 This biennial publication showcases the breadth of work and main achievements and partnerships of FAO Forestry in implementing the Strategic Objectives and Objective 6. It will also contain information on project and programme delivery and funding resources. It is also intended as a reference for delegates attending the 23rd Session of the Committee on Forestry during discussions on programme implementation as well as a resource for new staff, partners and the media to help them better understand FAO's forestry programme and its linkages with other sectors.

Promoting Private Sector Investments in Sustainable Forestry: Expert Workshop on Financial and Institutional Innovation for Reducing the Risks of Private Sector Investments in Sustainable Forestry This workshop was organized in the framework of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) led initiative on “Financial and institutional risk mitigation and management strategies”. This initiative stems from the lack of significant funding for the forest sector in key areas of intervention such as forest plantations, natural forest management, small and medium forest enterprises, local and community forestry, and large-scale forest investment projects including REDD+, while private capital is available for investments. Underlying efficient business models can bring substantial financial returns to investors in all these activities, but many traditional investors are still reluctant to invest. Australia Climate change blamed for huge mangrove die-off Al Jazeera 11/07/16 Climate change has triggered a massive die-off of mangroves along the northern coast of Australia, according to scientists at the country's James Cook University. Mangrove swamps are important ecosystems - the forests and coastal wetlands absorb up to 50 times more carbon than tropical rainforests by area. Mangrove destruction worst seen from climate change The Queensland Times 11/07/16 A scientist has documented the death of 10,000ha of mangroves along the Queensland and Northern Territory coastlines, citing climate change as the likely culprit. Mangroves expert Dr Norm Duke feared the destruction could hold further implications for the wider ecosystem. Massive mangrove die-off on Gulf of Carpentaria worst in the world, says expert The Guardian 11/07/16 Climate change and El Niño have caused the worst mangrove die-off in recorded history, stretching along 700km of Australia’s Gulf of Carpentaria, an expert says. The mass die-off coincided with the world’s worst global coral bleaching event, as well as the worst bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef, in which almost a quarter of the coral was killed – something also caused by unusually warm water. India 800,000 People Attempt to Plant 50 Million Trees to Break Guinness World Record Eco Watch 12/07/16 Uttar Pradesh officials distributed 50 million tree saplings across the state to help India increase its forest cover and to break the Guinness World record for the number of trees planted in 24 hours—which was set by Pakistan in 2013 with 847,275 trees—the AP reported.

Forest rangers rescue 3-year-old bear from farm well in Indian village International Business Times 08/07/16 Forest rangers rescued a three-year-old black bear that had accidentally fallen into a farm well in a village in Tirunelveli district in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu. A local politician, who owns the farm, informed authorities after he spotted the wild animal in the well.

Gujarat: Lions attack man near Gir forests, spotted in Junagadh town The Indian Express 13/07/16 One person was seriously injured when three lions attacked him in Gujrat’s Amreli district on Tuesday while a video on the social media depicting a pride of eight lions roaming about a human habitat in Junagadh district created panic in the area. Maharashtra sows 2 crore trees, up tries 50 million as India starts a tree plantation drive India Times 12/07/16 On Monday, Uttar Pradesh set out to make a new world record by attempting to plant 50 million trees in 24 hours. State officials distributed millions of saplings to people across the state in hopes to increase its

forest cover, and enter the Guinness World Records for planting the maximum number of trees in a day. RTO plans to develop 'city forest' The Times of India 12/07/16 The Regional Transport Office (RTO) authorities are planning to develop a two-acre land as 'city forest' near the newly constructed RTO building at Nayta Mundla area. According to sources, the officials have identified an unused government land for the purpose. It is adjacent to the new RTO building and comes under green belt. UP creates world record by planting over 5crore trees The Times of India 12/07/16 UP has created a world record for orchestrating the largest state-wide plantation drive in 24 hours. From 10 am on Monday morning, the forest department in UP started a mission to plant 5 crore saplings. By 9 pm, the state claimed it had achieved the target and planted 5.01 crore saplings across the state. Jordan

Greening the deserts of Jordan: permaculture food forests develop Science World Report 13/07/16 A permaculture forest garden mirrors a natural plant and animal community that occurs in that climate. It is a low maintenance sustainable plant-based food production and agroforestry system. It cultivates fruit trees, herbs, nut trees, vines, perennial vegetables and shrubs. It is not natural. World Disturbing forests damages natural diversity Climate News Network 11/07/16 It is not enough just to conserve forest. It may be just as important not to disturb any of it. New research suggests that selective logging, hunting and other kinds of damage can do serious harm to the biodiversity within the remaining forest. Putting the ‘evidence’ in evidence-based forest conservation Mongabay.com 12/07/16 Conservation Evidence (CE) has published a comprehensive new synopsis of global interventions in forests summarizing the results of more than 120 conservation actions that have been undertaken, such as changing fire regimes, legal and community protection, prescribed burning, or encouraging
