PC Sales Off, Games Buoy Microsoft

SAN FRANCISCOMicrosoft, once the dominant technology company, saw revenue from its core

operating system software slip in the first three months of the year as consumers begin to shift to

buying tablet computers that do not run on Microsoft software.

While Microsoft reported Thursday that its fiscal third-quarter profits were up 31 percent, revenue from the division that includes the Windows operating system fell 4 percent, to$4.45 billion.

The fall was due in part toan overall declinein PC sales worldwide of about 3.2 percent.Analysts have blamed the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, a big market for computers, forpart of that decline.

But the sales of tablet computers, like theiPad,were another major factor and that could

become a persistent problem for Microsoft. The category of the tablet computer created byAppleand its iPad is expanding quickly. Apple has sold 19.5 million iPads, and all the bigPC makers and cellphone makers are making tablets.

Most of the tablets on the market run either Apples operating system software orGooglesAndroidsoftware. Manufacturers have shown little interest in using Microsoft Windowssoftware to run a tablet.

Canalys, a technology market research firm, noted that when tablet computers are groupedwith PCs,Apple becomes the fourthlargest PC manufacturer in the world with almost 10percent of the market. The three biggest PC makers,Hewlett-Packard,Acer andDell, are

all making tablets that dont use Microsoft software.

One other indication of Microsofts changing stature: for the first time,Apples quarterlyprofits exceeded Microsofts $5.99 billion compared with $5.23 billion. Last year,Apple surpassed Microsoft in market capitalization and in revenue.

Its a huge testament to Apple, said Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial. Thereis clearly some disruption in the PCs. However, Mr. Gillis noted that Microsoft Windows7 is the fastest-selling operating system in history. He thinks Microsoft will probably makea move into tablets later this year with its expected release of Windows 8. In any case, Mr.Gillis said, PCs arent going to disappear.

Microsoft also has found itself left behind in software for cellphones. It recently acted toramp up its presence on mobile phones through an agreement withNokia, the Finnishhandset maker that is troubled, but still the largest makers of cellphones in the world. Thetwo companies are working together on new mobile phones that would use MicrosoftsWindows Phone operating system.

Microsoft has seen declines in its operating software before, as recently as last years first

fiscal quarter when it fell 4 percent.

To be sure, other parts of the companys business remain strong and helpedMicrosoftreport Thursdaythat net income in its third quarter rose 31 percent to $5.23 billion, or 61

cents a share, from $4 billion, or 45 cents a share, in the quarter a year ago. Revenueclimbed 13 percent, to $16.43 billion, from $14.5 billion.

The companys Office software, where it has no significant competition, grew 21 percent,to $5.25 billion. Office 2010 is the fastest-selling version of Office ever, Microsoft said, with businesses deploying the software at five times the rate of its predecessor.

However, revenue from Microsofts entertainment and devices, which includes the Xbox360 video game console and the innovative Kinect game controller that interprets gesturesand voice commands, gained 60 percent, to $1.94 billion. Kinect, a sensor that lets playersinteract with video games without having to hold a controller, did particularly well, selling2.4 million units in the quarter. Customers bought 2.7 million Xbox 360s.

Microsoft blamed the economy for the lower revenue from Windows. Consumers aresaving their money rather than buying new computers, said Peter Klein, Microsofts chieffinancial officer. Asked in an interview about the impact of tablets on computer sales, heacknowledged that its part of the story.

Sleep Can Wait. The Birds Are Angry.

Mine wouldnt have known what it was. And even if he did, it would have felt like a

transgression of the respect/dignity boundary that used to separate men from boys.

TheiPadhas changed all that. Its the ultimate generational equalizer. Take Angry Birds.

The game phenomenon from the Finnish company Rovio, with 40 million active users, 75million paid and ad-supported downloads and 2 million plush dolls sold, has becomeamong the man-boys in our house a furious competition for power, points and digitalAchievement, a word that flashes rewardingly on the Angry Birds screen.

The games principles are simple: you slingshot red, yellow or whatever birds at smuggreen pigs who in the games narrative have stolen the birds eggs. Hence their anger. Thegoal is to kill the pigs and destroy as much of their protective housing as possible with asfew birds as possible.

The birds chirp and squawk. The pigs grunt and snicker as the games Tchaikovsky-lite

musical stings insinuate their way into your brain.

Like everyone else, I was sucked in by the easy early levels, challenged by the later, trickierones, then driven mad by Level Its 2 a.m. and Im Wasting My Life.

My wife now falls asleep to the sound of glass breaking, TNT exploding and digital farmanimals meeting their violent demise, mystified by the simpleton she now finds herselfmarried to.

And mother to. Because our two boys have joined their role model into this mind-numbinginsanity.

What level are you on? became shorthand around the apartment. Diego, my older boy,

soon eclipsed me with his 6-year-old reflexes. Meaning I had to stay up till all hours to

catch up. And if I surpassed him, he freaked out.

Dont play Angry Birds, hed admonish me before going to bed.

Dont worry, I wont, Id say, in reassuring tones.

    Then, of course, I did.

So now Angry Birds was making me lie to my own children. Pitting father against son, aswe tried to yank the iPad out of one anothers hands. Its like the worlds cheapest crack.

I found my older spawn under the covers of hisIkeabunk bed with my iPad, sneaking inlate-night Angry-Birding of his own.

His younger brother, Kingsley, fights bitterly for Angry Bird time, too, then plays the gamein a completely noncompetitive way. He just likes shooting the birds.

When I wasnt around, the little addicts talked their clueless mom into blurting out my

iTunes password, allowing them to buy the Mighty Eagle, a giant bird that, when activated, wipes out all the pigs.

The Eagle is a cheat. I refuse to use it on principle. Just like I wouldnt watch the YouTube

    or Bing hints.

My friend Chris fell into that. Because he has girls. With no one to compete against athome, he had to make the game his enemy. It wasnt enough to clear every level; he cravedthe Golden Eggs.

At one point, the sound went out on the game, a glitch that the diabolical Finns at Rovioclaim to be working on. I immediately lost interest in playing. Turned out I was playing forthe sound effects. Then, for the children, I went online and found out how to get the

sound back. And sure enough, the monkey (or the Mighty Eagle) was on my back again.

Theres no Cold Turkey in the Angry Birds aviary. Addicts are on their own. My friend

Jonathan forced himself to remove the game from his iPad. Like my college roommate whocould stop watching TV only if he stuck it in his closet.

Ive never had that kind of addictive personality. Which is why it mystifies me now, beingtrapped in these fugue states of pig-killingporcicide. I get the attraction for the boys.Whats in it for me? Blowing stuff up? Mastering levels? Just having a mindless activity

to shut down my brain at the end of the day?

Among smartphone apps for New Yorkers, the most longed for remains one that will getyou to work on time. So its probably not surprising that the city is experiencing a boom intransit apps, with dozens of options including beginner-level offerings that give basicdirections and more advanced ones, likeExit Strategy, which counsels riders on whichsubway car will get them closest to the most convenient exit. The city government and theMetropolitan Transportation Authorityare encouraging this trend by providing public dataandrunning app contests.

Roadify, which aims to use the wisdom of the crowd to inform drivers and transit riders, recently won the grand prize in the citys Big Apps 2.0 competition. It was originally a text-messaging group that let drivers in Park Slope, Brooklyn, announce when they wereleaving a parking spot. Last year, several developers expanded on that idea, creating an appto swap information about driving and public transportation. Roadify also includes subwayand bus timetables and scheduled service changes, and the developers are gradually addingmore ways for users to share information about their commutes. AnAndroidversion is inthe works.

It is easy to see how Roadify could be useful. But it is the kind of service that gets better asmore people sign up, and it has not reached critical mass. It is not uncommon to click on,

There is also some development work to be done: More than 20 buslines have yet to be entered into the database, meaning that if you live in many parts ofQueens, youre out of luck. And the subway information is arranged by line, not by station.Trying to decide which train to take from Times Square? You have to check each line

Solar Panels Rise Pole by Pole, Followed

    by Gasps of Eyesore

ORADELL, N.J.Nancy and Eric Olsen could not pinpoint exactly when it happened or how. All

they knew was one moment they had a pastoral view of a soccer field and the woods from their

1920s colonial-style house; the next all they could see were three solar panels.

I hate them, Mr. Olsen, 40, said of the row of panels attached to electrical poles acrossthe street. Its just an eyesore.

Around the corner lives Tom Trobiano, 61, a liquor salesman, now adapting to the lonesolar panel hanging over his driveway. When its up close, he said, the panel takes on a

    life of its own.

Like a massive Christo project but without the advance publicity, installations have beenpopping up across New Jersey for about a year now, courtesy of New Jerseys largest

utility, thePublic Service Electric and Gas Company.Unlike other solar projects tuckedaway on roofs or in industrial areas, the utility is mounting 200,000 individual panels inneighborhoods throughout its service area, covering nearly three-quarters of the state.

The solar installations, the first and most extensive of their kind in the country, are part of a$515 million investment in solar projects by PSE&G under a state mandate that by 2021power providers get 23 percent of their electricity from renewable sources. If they were laidout in a solar farm, the 5-by-2.5-foot panels would blanket 170 acres.

New Jersey is second only to California insolar powercapacity thanks to financialincentives anda public policy commitment to renewable energy industriesseeded duringGov.Jon S. Corzines administration. But what might have been a point of pride in a statebetter known as the nations leader in toxicSuperfundsites has instead caused suburbanaesthetic unrest.

Some residents consider the overhanging panels ugly and hideous and worry aloudabout the effect on property values.

Though nearly halfway finished, the companys crews have encountered some freshresistance in Bergen County, where cities, villages and boroughs are in varying stages of

mortification. Local officials have forced a temporary halt in many towns as they seekassurances that they will not be liable in case of injury, but also to buy time for suggestingalternative siteslike dumpsto spare their tree-lined streets.

And here in Oradell, at least one panel has gone missing.

When and where the panels will show up next can be a mystery, prompting complaints overthe lack of prior notice.

I came back from running errands and there they were, Mrs. Olsen, 37, said. Its not

right. They should have warned us.

In neighboring Ridgewood, Deputy Mayor Thomas M. Riche said constituents had called, sent e-mails and stopped him on the street demanding that he halt the encroaching blight.

Ridgewood, an affluent village of about 24,000, got PSE&G to cease installations afteronly a few had been put up, over concerns that they would interfere with the emergencycommunications boxes on the poles.

The talks are continuing, Mr. Riche said, adding that he is trying to steer the Ridgewoodpanels to a town park-and-ride lot and its public schools.

A cluster of panels in one area is better than individual panels all over the town, he said.

Were not against solar energy, but there are more efficient ways than having panels on

    the utility poles.

PSE&G officials said their search for maximum sun exposure could not dodge and weaveresidential areas in a place as crowded as New Jersey. It turns out that only a quarter of thecompanys 800,000 poles are suitable for the panels, which are mounted 15 feet high and

    need good southern exposure.
