— Psalm 17:56a

PRAYER: PART 4 - BENEFITS

Prayer has so many benefits. To appreciate the beauty and power of prayer, you must resist the temptation of judging it from the material point of view. You must look at it spiritually. First of all, think of all the monsters of the soul, all the negative emotions that ravage the heart: loneliness, depression, restlessness or stress, anxiety and paranoia. Prayer is the spiritual solution for them all because they are all symptoms of divine absence - a disconnect between the soul and God. Loneliness is the fear of lack of company and friendship. Prayer makes us aware of the unceasing presence of God, the blessed Mother and a host of angels and saints. It helps us to connect to our inner strength and prepares us for a healthy companionship or friendship. “I am with you always, to the end of the age”, Jesus assures us. Mt 28:20 Depression is a debilitating sense of worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness and lack of interest. This leads to persistent sadness and lack of joy. St. Augustine was thinking of this when he said, "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you." Only prayer can reconnect one’s heart to God, its only source of life. “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” Mt 11:28. Stress arises from the fear of losing control. But God said, “Be still, and know that I am God!” Ps 46:10. In the context of prayer we recognize God’s strength and surrender ourselves to His will and control. Anxiety is the fear of the unknown, which also arises from one’s sense of inadequacy. But the Scripture reassures us, “Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you” 1 Pet 5:7. Prayer helps us to unburden our hearts to God. Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” Rev 3:20. Prayer enables us to open the door of our hearts to God. Once in, the Holy Spirit begins the work of dispelling the darkness in our hearts and producing spiritual fruits including “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” Gal 5:22-23. And no, I didn’t forget! Once our hearts are in the right place (see Mt 6:33; Jn 15:7), God then grants us in addition many material benefits including financial security, protections over our families, good relationships etc. Remember, “those who trust in the Lord will not be disappointed” Is 49:23.

Youth Ministry News

It blows my mind on how much of an opinion our teens have on an election they can't even vote in. There are 3 groups of them. The first are teens who are basing their decisions only on social media and memes, that's right, I said memes. The second group are teens who are vocal based on how their parents or someone close to them tell them who and what to support. The third and final group, which is very small, are teens who have actually taken the time to research this election and make informed decisions, even though they can't vote. But one thing that is not being taken into consideration is their faith. Faith should be the center of all our decisions in our life, even our democratic ones. However, just as we do with other decisions in our life, a lot of us pick and choose where we want our faith to play a part in things and where we don't. We need to take everything into consideration when voting, including our faith. So, does your faith play a role in your voting process?

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Friday 9 a.m. — Saturday 8:30 a.m.

Contemplate with wonder the humiliations of the sacramental state which Jesus has taken upon himself for love of you. His immortal love for us is the chain that binds him until the end of the world. His living Presence in our midst should be our heaven on earth.

(St Peter Julian Eymard)
