Dear Crocker Farm Families: As November draws to a close, we wanted to take a moment to express our grati-tude for the many ways our Crocker Farm Community supports our students.

Thank you to our PGO for organizing our annual Winter Clothing Drive. Students were excited to get their winter gear just in time for colder weather. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped organize and distrib-ute the items that families so generously donated.

Thank you to our wonderful para-educators who support our students every day on playground in the morning, in the cafeteria, in classrooms and as cross-ing guards. They are on the front lines with teachers and your children as they navigate the day at Crocker Farm.

We are grateful for the many teachers who work together to create positive learning environments in so many ways throughout the day. Teachers from the classroom collaborate with ELL teachers, special education teachers, arts teachers and counselors to support students at Crocker Farm.

Just a reminder that there is NO SCHOOL, Wednesday, November 22nd through the Thanksgiving Holiday. School resumes on Monday, November 27th. We hope you and your family enjoy a restful break! Warmly, Derek & Sharri

Queridas familias de los alumnos de Crocker Farm:

Como el mes de noviembre se acerca a su fin, queríamos tomar un momento para expresar nues-

tro agradecimiento por las muchas formas en que nuestra comunidad se apoya.

Gracias a nuestro OPG para la organización de nuestra campaña anual de ropas de invierno. Los

estudiantes estaban emocionados para elegir su equipaje/ropa para los meses de invierno. Les mandamos

las gracias a todos los voluntarios quienes organizaron y distribuyeron los elementos que las familias dona-

ron tan generosamente.

Les mandamos las gracias a todos los “para-educadores” quienes trabajan todos los días en el patio

de recreo, en la cafetería, en las aulas y como protectores de travesía. Están en el frente con los maestros

y sus hijos mientras navegan el día escolar.

Estamos agradecidos por los maestros quienes trabajan juntos para crear un ambiente positive pa-

ra el aprendizaje de tantas maneras durante todo el día. Maestros de cada salón de clase colaboran con

maestros de ELL, profesores de educación especial, maestros de Artes y consejeros para apoyar a los alum-

nos en nuestra escuela.

Simplemente un recordatorio de que no hay escuela, el miércoles, 22 de noviembre y tampoco te-

nemos clase el día de acción de gracias. Escuela empieza el 27 de noviembre (lunes). ¡Esperamos que

The Beginning of the Writing Workshop in Kindergarten

“Our goal is to offer children the opportuni-ty to bring their lives to school and to put their lives on the page” We begin by modeling how to work in-dependently in a writing workshop. We

start right off with choosing a topic, sketching it out and then writing a tiny bit about it. Then we show writers how to add to their pieces by adding more to their words or picture or by starting a new piece. Of course, children are taught to independently use supplies in the class-room. Pencils, crayons, markers, the alphabet chart and their writing folders are easily available. We encourage children to draw the best they can and keep going to see that there are reasons to write all across the room. We begin to introduce different ways to write by us-ing booklets, lists and letters and to edit their own writing. We sometimes narrow our focus in writing. Mrs. McCloskey’s class is

taking an in-depth look at Fall at the moment and Ms. Newcomb’s class

will be studying and writing about the Rain Forest come winter.

Center in Wales, MA. It was a long bus ride but totally worth the trip!

tabulations of the judge’s final

decisions.

Ms. Harvey & Ms. Millay’s Class Update (November 17, 2017): Classroom: We had a 6th grade teacher from The Netherlands, Sandra Kamphorst, come and visit for a week in October. She taught a writing lesson in ELA that the students really enjoyed. They had to write an original fairy tale, but every so often Ms. K would interrupt with a word that they had to in-corporate into their story. Ms. K also showed a video of The Netherlands, her classroom, and shared some classic Dutch treats with us. Her students also painted wooden shoe keychains to give to all of our students.

ELA: Everyday we begin with silent reading. We started our spelling program in early October. We are learning about spelling patterns and then need to learn the definitions of the words to use them in sentences/paragraphs. We have been working on a unit studying the elements of fiction, using short stories for examples and enjoyment. We read, highlight new vocabulary, and discuss the elements of fiction, such as characters, plot, and setting. After Thanksgiving, we will be writing our own short stories using what we learned from our reading unit. We also continue to use an online grammar program called “GrammarFlip.” We have a Google Classroom site that students can log on to at school or at home. This gives links to some of the assignments and information the students are working on and learning about.

Math: We have reviewed the four basic operations, Greatest Common Factor, Least Common Multi-ple, and addition and subtraction of fractions. We just took the Chapter 2 test on multiplication and division of fractions and addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals. We start begin-ning algebra next in Chapter 3. Students can log on at school and at home to our Google Classroom site. This has vocabulary listed for all chapters, some links to helpful online videos, and some prac-tice quizzes.

Social Studies: We have been studying hominids and early humans, including evolution of upright walking primates to Homo Sapiens. We learned about the time period in which they lived, their capa-bilities, and how they were similar and different from each other and modern humans. We will begin learning about the Paleolithic and the Neolithic eras this week.

Science: We have been using the scientific method to try to determine the best way to make a whirlygig fly. Students needed to test the length of the wing size or the weight put onto the whirlygig to see what would make it fall the slowest. They needed to time and record their results and interpret what they found.

Academic Focus: We have been focusing on the four basic operations in math. We are working on using the standard algorithm and quickly recalling our mul-tiplication facts.

We earned a party and PJ day on Halloween for work-ing hard and respecting others. We also earned the Golden Sneaker award in P.E.!

Harvey y actualización de la Sra Millay Clase (17 de noviembre, 2017): Escuela: Tuvimos un maestro de 6to grado de los Países Bajos, Sandra Kamphorst, venir a visitar du-rante una semana en octubre. Ella enseñó una lección de escritura en ELA que los estudiantes real-mente disfrutaron. Tenían que escribir un cuento original, pero de vez en cuando la Sra K interrumpirían con una palabra que tenían que incorporar en su historia. La Sra K también mostró un video de los Paí-ses Bajos, su salón de clases, y compartió algunas golosinas clásico holandés con nosotros. Sus estu-diantes también pintaron llaveros de madera del zapato para dar a todos nuestros estudiantes.

ELA: Todos los días comenzamos con la lectura silenciosa. Empezamos nuestro programa de ortogra-fía a principios de octubre.
