description

The semester is almost over and we have finally reached our last unit that talks about arts and types of art. We had a very interesting class about Mandalas. mandala is a sanskrit word that means " circle". It can have many spiritual meanings, traditionally they are made to remind us of some important principles of life. In the Hindu religion, mandalas are made collaboratively , and in silence, It is a form of meditation. Once it is finished, It is dismantled and the sand is gathered into a jar and poured back in the sea. It teaches us that nothing lasts forever and we have to learn to let things go, everything always fluctuates. After watching a nice video about monks making mandalas and reading an interview with a mandala's artist, our class was divided in groups and the groups were instructed to make their own mandala using colored clay. it was a wonderful moment in which they got together and made these beautiful oval shaped intricate pieces.
