Travel by planeEnglish Translation

Jet planes: Some je t planes can carry over 400 passengers. The large je ts need to have long runways because they have to be going fast to take-off and i t takes them time to slow down when they land.Sea planes: There are some planes that can land on water. Some have special floats instead of wheels. Some have a specially shaped bottom so that the plane can flo a t.

Helicopters: Helicopters can take-off or land straight up or down. This is useful where there is no runway e.g. in the snow, in the bush. A large propeller keeps the helicopter in the a ir. A small one keeps i t pointing the right way. Helicopters can be used to round up cattle in the bush.

4 . Crop duster: Insect pests may damage crops on very large farms. A irc ra ft carrying special spraying equipment is used to get rid of them. The planes f ly low over the farmlands and spray pesticide on the insect pests below.

5. The Flying Doctor: When people become i l l , the Royal Flying Doctor Service makes doctors and dentists available throughout the outback. The Flying Doctor can be called in by radio in an emergency.

6. Small planes: A small plane has only one engine. Some small planes can carry 5 or 6 passengers. These planes are also used to take the mail to the outstations and isolated areas.
