CATHOLIC CHARITIES YOU DID IT FOR ME

Jenny was removed from her parents’ home where she suffered abuse and neglect. She bounced from foster home to foster home until a family member agreed to take custody, which lasted until Jenny was 15 when she became homeless. She stayed on the couches of friends and, incredibly, was able to graduate high school. She needed help with her next steps, so she turned to her local Catholic Charities men-toring program. Now Jenny has temporary housing and is attending college. Catholic Char-ities agencies provided 450,770 clients with some kind of housing-related service in 2015.

Jenny fue removida de la casa de sus padres donde sufrió abuso y abandono. Rebotó de un hogar de crianza temporal hasta que un

miembro de la familia accedió a tomar la custo-dia, que duró hasta que Jenny tenía 15 años cuando se quedó sin hogar. Ella se quedó en so-fás de amigos y, increíblemente, fue capaz de graduarse de la escuela secundaria. Necesitaba ayuda con sus próximos pasos, así que se volvió a su programa de mentores de las Caridades Ca-tólicas locales. Ahora Jenny tiene una vivienda temporal y asiste a la universidad.

Saint Elizabeth of Portugal July 4

Elizabeth is usually depicted in royal garb with a dove or an olive branch. Under the healthful influences surrounding her early years, she quickly learned self-discipline and acquired a taste for spirituality.

Thus fortunately prepared, Elizabeth was able to meet the challenge when at the age of 12, she was given in marriage to Denis, king of Portugal. She was able to establish for herself a pattern of life conducive to growth in God’s love, not merely through her exercises of piety, including daily Mass, but also through her exercise of charity, by which she was able to befriend and help pilgrims, strangers, the sick, the poor—in a word, all those whose need came to her notice. At the same time she remained de-

voted to her husband, whose infidelity to her was a scandal to the kingdom.

Denis, too, was the object of many of her peace endeavors. Elizabeth long sought peace for him with God, and was finally rewarded when he gave up his life of sin. She repeatedly sought and effected peace between the king and their rebellious son Alfonso, who thought that he was passed over to favor the king’s illegitimate children. From Coimbra, where she had retired as a Franciscan tertiary to the monastery of the Poor Clares after the death of her husband, Elizabeth set out and was able to bring about a lasting peace between her son Alfonso, now king of Portugal, and his son-in-law, the king of Castile.

Reflection: The work of promoting peace is anything but a calm and quiet endeavor. It takes a clear mind, a steady spirit and a brave soul to intervene between people whose emotions are so aroused that they are ready to destroy one another. This is all the more true of a woman in the early 14th century. But Elizabeth had a deep and sincere love and sympathy for humankind, an almost total lack of concern for herself, and an abiding confidence in God. These were the tools of her suc-cess.

Santa Isabel de Portugal 4 de Julio

Isabel se representa generalmente en traje real con una paloma o una rama de olivo. Bajo las saludables influencias que rodeaban sus primeros años, rápidamente apren-dió autodisciplina y adquirió un gusto por la espiritualidad.

Así, afortunadamente preparada, Isabel fue capaz de enfrentarse al desafío cuando a la edad de 12 años, fue dada en matrimonio con Denis, rey de Portugal. Ella fue capaz de establecer por sí misma un patrón de vida conducente al crecimiento del amor de Dios, no sólo a través de sus ejercicios de piedad, incluyendo la misa diaria, sino tam-bién a través del ejercicio de la caridad, mediante el cual pudo amparar y ayudar a peregrinos, extraños, los enfermos, los pobres, en una palabra, todos aquellos cuya necesidad le era de notar. Al mismo tiempo permaneció dedicada a su marido, cuya infidelidad ha-cia ella era un escándalo para el reino.

Denis, también, fue el objeto de muchos de sus esfuerzos por la paz. Elizabeth mucho tiempo buscó la paz para él con Dios, y finalmente fue recompensado cuando él dio su vida de pecado. Ella buscó y realizó repetidamente la paz entre el rey y su hijo rebelde Alfonso, que pensó que fue ignorado en favor a los niños ilegítimos del rey. Estas fueron las herramientas de su éxito.
