Verbos Frasales

Some particles can be separated from the verb so that a noun and pronoun can be inserted, and some particles can't be separated from the verb. In addition, some phrases are intransitive, meaning they cannot take a direct object.

Eat out (no object): have a meal in a restaurant.

"I'm too tired to cook tonight. Why don't we eat out?"

Egg on (separable): urge / encourage greatly toward doing some-thing (usually something negative).

"At first Bob and Chuck were just having a mild argument, but Bob's friends egged them on until they started fighting."

End up (1. no object): finally arrive at; arrive at an unexpected place.

End up (2. no object): arrive somewhere as a result or consequence.

Face up to (inseparable): admit to; take responsibility for.

"You can't pretend that you're doing OK in this course, Joe. Sooner or later, you'll have to face up to the fact that you're failing it."

"We had originally intended to go to Mexico for our vacation, but our trip fell through when I got sick."

Verbos Preposicionales

There are many verbs after which a particular preposition is used. The preposi-tional phrase is followed by an object (mostly a noun or a clause). If the object is a verb, the verb must be in the gerund form ('ing' form). There are prepositional verbs with only one object and prepositional verbs which can have one or two ob-jects. 1. Prepositional verbs / Verb + preposition

Form:

The verb has one object and cannot be used with two objects. The preposition comes before the object. Have you applied for the job? In questions the preposition sometimes comes at the end of the sentence. What do you blame the insurance company of?

Use Sometimes the meaning of prepositional verbs can be explained from the mean-ing of the separate parts (e.g. run away). In other cases the combination of the verb and preposition gets a new meaning which cannot be explained from the separate parts (e.g. to look after).

Sleep in I slept in this morning.

Slim down You have slimmed down a lot since last spring break.

Slip up You must not slip up again.

Slow down You're going to fast. Please slow down.

Smash into The car smashed into the side of a bus.

Sober up Some coffee definitely won't sober them up.

Speak up Please speak up. I nearly can't hear you.
