En el año 1900, un amigo preguntó a Verdi cuál de sus ópe-ras era su preferida. La respuesta: ¡La Casa di Riposa per Musicisti! El más famoso (y, probablemente, también más rico) compositor de ópera italiana jamás olvidó su origen: el entorno de los campesinos pobres de los llanos del río Po. Siempre dijo con orgullo “soy campesino” y mantuvo sus características firmes por toda su vida: honrado, orgullo-so, terco, con un temperamento casi violento, peleador en los negocios, pero el más suave y generoso de los hombres cuando se le tocaba la sensibilidad humana.

In 1900, a friend asked TO Verdi which of his operas was his favorite. The answer: The Casa di Riposa per Musicisti! The most famous (and probably also richer) Italian opera composer never forgot his origins: the environment of the rural poor in the plains of the river Po. Profesor en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, en la Universidad Católica Argentina y en la Universidad Nacional de La Plata, así como jurado en las uni-versidades nacionales de Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Cuyo y La Plata. Además de sus numerosas publicaciones sobre música medieval, realizó significativos aportes en el análisis de la melódica criolla argentina y la organología en las misiones jesuíticas americanas.

Franz Joseph Haydn manifestó en una ocasión al padre de Mozart, Leopold, que su hijo era «el más grande com-positor que conozco, en persona o de nombre». Hoffmann consideraba a Mozart, junto a Beetho-ven, el gran precedente del romanticismo, uno de los pocos que había sabido expresar en sus obras aquello que las palabras son incapaces de insinuar siquiera.

Es profesor e investigador del Instituto de Música de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, y presidente de la Rama Latinoamericana de la Asociación Internacional de Estudios de Música Po-pular. Ha publicado cerca de 30 artículos musicológicos en revistas de América Latina y Estados Unidos y ha presenta-do cerca de 40 ponencias en congresos realizados en numerosos países latinoa-mericanos y europeos. Paralelamente ha realizado estudios de compositores chilenos del siglo XX, considerando su relación con las vanguardias europeas y los lenguajes locales.

He is a professor and researcher at the Institute of Music of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, and Presi-dent of the Latin American branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. He has published over 30 articles in journals musicological Latin America and the U.S. and has presented over 40 papers in congresses in many Latin American and European countries. Has conducted parallel Chi-lean composers of the twentieth century, considering its relationship with the European vanguard and local languages .

Muy exigente consigo mismo, su producción es escasa y cuenta con muchas obras inacabadas y retiradas por el mismo compositor y sólo recuperadas póstumamente, como es el caso de la Sinfonía en do mayor (1855). Su obra está impregnada de exotismo, una de las vertien-tes aventureras del espíritu romántico. En una carrera cortada por su muerte prematura, alcanzó escasos éxitos hasta su última obra, Carmen, que se convirtió en una de las obras más populares e interpretadas de todo el repertorio operístico.

Estudió Farmacia y Medicina durante cinco años en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia en Bogotá. Llega luego a la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, a la facultad de Artes, en donde fue Profesor Especial del Conservatorio de Música durante 22 años y Director del Centro de Estudios Folklóricos de la misma, así como secretario general de la Junta Nacional de Folklore. Autor de más de 25 libros sobre cultu-ra musical, folklore e identidad. Durante este tiempo se han publicado 40.000 ejemplares que han agotado edición tras edición.

Pharmacy and Medicine studied for five years at the National University of Colombia in Bogota.
