LANDSLIDE
A landslideor landslipis a geologicalphenomenonwhich includes
a wide range ofground movement, such as rockfalls, deepfailure ofslopesand shallow debrisflows, which
can occur in
offshore, coastal and onshoreenvironments. Although the action of gravityisthe primary driving force for a landsl
ide tooccur, there are othercontributing factorsaffecting the original slope stability. Typically,
pre-conditional factors
build up specific sub-surface conditions that make the area/slopeprone to failure, whereas the actual landslideoften requires a trigger before being released.

CAUSES OF LANDSLIDE
Landslides occur when the stability
of a slopechanges from a stable to
an unstable condition. A change inthe stability of a slope can be caused
by a number of factors, acting
together or alone. Natural causes of
landslides include:

Landslides are aggravated by human
activities, Human causes include:
deforestation, cultivationand construction, which destabilize the already fragile slopes
vibrationsfrom machineryor traffic
earthworkwhich alters the shape of
a slope, or which imposes newloads on an existing slope
blasting

Debris flow
- Slope material thatbecomes saturatedwith watermay developinto a debris flowor mud flow. Theresulting slurry of rockand mud may pick
up trees, houses and cars, thus blockingbridgesand tributariescausing floodingalong itspath.
- Debris flow is often mistaken for flashflood, but they are entirely differentprocesses.

Deep-seated landslide
- Landslides in which the sliding surface is mostly deeply
located below the maximum rooting depth of trees(typically to depths greater than ten meters). Deep-seated landslides usually involve deep regolith, weathered rock, and/or bedrockand include large
slope failure associated with translational, rotational,or complex movement. These typically move slowly, only several meters per year, but occasionally movefaster. They tend to be larger than shallow landslidesand form along a plane of weakness such asa faultor bedding plane. They can be visually identifiedby concave scarpsat the top and steep areas at thetoe.

Landslide occurred in Malaysia
In 2004 Malaysia suffered the latest in a series
of landslide incidents when a large rockslope
failed and collapsed onto the New Klang Valley
Expressway (NKVE) on the edge of KualaLumpur at Bukit Lanjan. This remarkable
landslide, pictured below, closed the
motorway for many months, inducing hugecosts, although fortunately no-one was killed:

Landslide at Simpang Pulai Stretch
- Looks like there are some minor landslidealong the Simpang Pulai stretch. Whenever it
rains, soil erosion occurs and when the ground
becomes liquefied, it won't be able to hold the
weight of the soil and landslide occurs.
