-There were 177 Emergency Department Reports involving alcohol use by underage Hispanic drinkers (Ft. Lauderdale Division of the
DAWN, in 2009.
-Of those 177 visits, 101 involved Only Alcohol and 76 involved alcohol in Combination with 117 other drugs.
-Among Broward County Hispanic high school students:
• 31.4% had their first drink of alcohol by the age of 13 or younger.*
•48.6% report current alcohol use.*
•27.2% report current alcohol binge drinking.*
- Among sexually active Broward County Hispanic high school students, 25.1% drank alcohol or used marijuana or other drugs before the last time they had sexual intercourse.*
Youth obtain their alcohol at home, at parties, or at stores with a fake ID (easy available on the Internet), or without a fake ID through strangers, older friends, a family member or a friend that works at a store***

-Among Broward County Hispanic adults, 25.1% report having engaged in heavy or binge drinking.**
-Hispanic parents are not being strict enough nor are they providing positive roles for their children. (Hispanic Youth Focus Group, Aspira 10/11)
-Among Broward County Hispanic high school students, 7.9% reported having had at least one drink on school property during the last 30 days.*
-Fitting in and peer pressure is a key area for youth assimilation / acculturation process (Key Informant)
-When asked how acceptable is underage drinking, youth responded: definitely accepted; a lot of people think it’s cool; in some countries it’s ok (Hispanic Youth Focus Group, Memorial 8/2011)

-Among Broward County Hispanic high school students who drink alcohol, 37.2% reported that they usually obtained it by someone giving it to them.*
-Retailers are selling alcoholic beverages (alcohol/alcopops) to underage youth. (ABT)
-Parents lack the ability to set limits, and to communicate the prevention message to their kids.***
-There is too much TV programming showing alcohol consumption as source of happiness.***

-There were 47 Emergency Department Reports involving marijuana among Hispanic youth under 21 years of age in the Ft. Lauderdale Division of the DAWN, in 2009.
-Among Broward County Hispanic high school students, 8.1% report their first use of marijuana by the age of 13 or younger (YRBS, 2009).
-Among Broward County Hispanic high school students, 29.9% report current use of marijuana (YRBS, 2009).
-Among sexually active Broward County Hispanic high school, 25.1% drank alcohol or used marijuana or other drugs before the last time they had sexual intercourse (YRBS, 2009).
• 56% of Broward County youth and adults (aged 12 and above) do not believe that smoking marijuana once a month presents a great risk of harm. (2010 NSDUH, sub-state data)
-Among Broward County Hispanic high school students, 10.2% reported they had used marijuana one or more times on school property during the last 30 days.*
-According to Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, there were 164 marijuana offenses for Hispanic males and 15 for Hispanic females in Broward County between July 2010 and June 2011.
• The sources of marijuana in Broward County are from both domestic production and imported Caribbean, Central, and South American varieties from multiple drug trafficking organizations. (South FL HIDTA 2010 Threat Assessment)
