SeacoastCenterforEducationoffersMontessoriteachereducationandprofessionaldevelopmentprogramsSeacoastwasfoundedin1992byGaryDavidsonandCharlesTerranova.Seacoast’smainsiteatthattimewasTheMontessoriCommunitySchoolinScituate,MA.TheCornerstoneSchoolinStrathamNHbecameourpermanentlocationin2001withexpansionintoadditionallocationsinCelebrationFLandMountPleasantSC.SeacoastnowoffersElementaryI-IIandEarlyChildhood(inpartnershipwithNortheastMontessoriInstitute)atSundropsMontessoriSchoolinMountPleasantSC.SeacoasthasofferedprofessionaldevelopmentinChina,Indonesia,Thailand,andelsewhere.SeacoastCenterconductsin-serviceprogramsandlocationsbyprivatecontractinternationally.

SeacoastCenterforEducation,Inc.,isafor-profitMassachusettscorporationandislicensedasaCareerSchoolforMontessoriTrainingbytheNewHampshireDepartmentofEducation.

Programs

TheSeacoastCenterMontessoriElementaryI(6-9)Programprovidesaminimumof325coursehoursdesignedtoprepareteacherstoworkwithchildrenfromages6-9inMontessorimulti-ageclassrooms.PubliclyadvertisedELI-IIcoursesareconductedtypicallyintwoacademicsummersessionstotalingsevenweeksdurationwithoneortwoseminarsduringtheinterveningacademicyear.LearnersenteringinJuneorJulyofoneyeartypicallycompleteclasssessionsattheendofthefollowingJuly.

Certificationcandidatesmustpossessabachelor’sdegreeoritsequivalent.Qualifiedcandidateswhocompleteallcourserequirementsandapracticumequivalenttooneacademicyear(1080hours)inanapprovedclassroomarerecommendedtotheAmericanMontessoriSocietyfortheElementaryICredential.

TheSeacoastCenterMontessoriElementaryI-IIProgram(9-12portion)isaminimumof175coursehoursdesignedtoprepareteacherstoworkwithchildrenfromages9-12inMontessorimulti-ageclassrooms.Publiclyadvertisedcoursesgenerallyareconductedinoneacademicsessionoffourweekswithtwoseminarsduringtheacademicyear.Certificationcandidateswhocompleteallcourse9-12requirementsarerequiredtocompletetheElementaryIprogramrequirementspriortorecommendationtotheAmericanMontessoriSocietyfortheAMSElementaryI-IIcredential.ElementaryIIonlyisnotofferedonacertificationbasis.

Privatecontractcoursesmayoperatewithdifferentcourseschedulesalthoughcomponentcontentofferingsremainunchanged.

CourseDirector

GaryDavidsonistheownerandDirectorofSeacoastCenterforEducation,Inc.anditsacademicprograms.Garyhastaughtchildrenandadultssince1976inMontessorisettingsforages6-14.Hehaslectured,written,andspokenwidelyonMontessoriElementarytopics.GaryisalsofounderandchiefexecutiveofTheAzokaCompany,providerofcurriculumsupportproducts.Garyhas35+yearsofclassroomexperiencefromages6-14and35yearsexperienceinMontessorielementaryteachereducationforAMScoursesandseminars,asalecturer,schoolandteachingconsultant,andAMSnationalseminarpresenter.HeisaboardmemberofMACTE,theMontessoriAccreditationCouncilforTeacherEducationandisaformermemberoftheboardofIAME,theInternationalAssociationforMontessoriEducation.SeacoastCenterconductsin-serviceprogramsandlocationsbyprivatecontractinternationally.

ThepurposesandobjectivesofSeacoastCenterforEducationanditsprogramsare:1. TooffereducationtoadultsinthetheoryandmethodologyoftheMontessoriMethodforthestatedagerange.2. Toworkwithallindividualsinaprofessionalandsupportivemanner.3. Toprovidesupporttoadultlearnerswhenpossibleincompletionofallcourserequirements.4. StatementofAdultLearnerRightsandResponsibilities

SeacoastCenterforEducationmaintainstherightasaninstitutionofprivatepost-secondaryeducationtoenforceitspoliciesandtoactwithdueprocesstodisassociatefromtheprogramindividualswhoseactivitiesorpublicattitudesarenotconstructivetotheadvertisedgoalsandpurposesoftheprogram.ItisourbeliefthatsuccessfulworkwithchildreninaMontessoriclassroomreliesontheabilityoftheadultsinvolvedtoactinapositive,professionalmannerbothwithintheacademicprocessandthepracticumexperience.

AdultLearnerResponsibilities

1. AdmissionsA. ToreadallinformationpublishedbySeacoastCenterforEducationconcerningitsprogram(s)B. Tobeknowledgeableaboutotheravailableinstitutionsandaccreditingagencies,sothatenrollmentinSeacoastisaninformedchoice.C. Tocompletetheapplicationprocesspromptlybysubmittingrequiredmaterialsandmeetingpre-trainingrequirementsincludingallrequiredreading.

2. FinancialArrangementsA. ToreadanyandallinformationprovidedbySeacoastregardingfees,refundpolicies,andfinancialrequirements,andtorequestfurtherinformationorclarificationwhenneeded.B. ToreadandunderstandallfinancialagreementsmadetoandbySeacoast,andtokeepacopyofallagreementsandreceipts.C. TomeetfinancialobligationstoSeacoastCenterpromptly.

Shallprotecttheopportunitytoprovideforparticipationineducationalprogramswithoutregardtorace,sex,color,creedornationalorigin3. Shallprotectthehealthandsafetyofstudents4. Shallhonorprofessionalcommitments,maintainobligationsandcontractswhileneversolicitingnorinvolvingstudentsortheirparentsinschemesforcommercialgain5. Admission

SeacoastCenteracceptsapplicationsthroughouttheyearforentranceintooursummerprograms.Inordertomaintainthequalityoflifeinoursmallsettingwedolimitclasssizesandencourageearlyenrollment.

CandidatesforAMSElementarycertificationmustholdatleastaUSBachelor'sdegreeoritsequivalent.CandidatesholdingdegreesissuedoutsidetheUnitedStatesareeligibleforAMSInternationalcredentialsuponsatisfactoryevaluationoftranscriptsordiplomas.Shouldthisrequireexternalevaluationitisatthestudent'sownexpense.

CandidatesforElementaryI(6-9)certificationmustpossessEarlyChildhood(21/2-6)certificationfromaninstitutionrecognizedbytheAmericanMontessoriSocietyorundertakea40houroverviewforthatlevelwhichincludesbasictheory,methodology,andcurricula.DocumentationisrequiredbeforerecommendationforElementaryIorI-IIcertificationismade.

CandidateswhoenrollasElementaryI-IIstudentswhoarecurrentlyworkinginupperelementaryclassroomsmaybeabletoundertakeadvancedcontentareaattherequestofsponsoringschools.Thisoptionrequiresawrittenstatementfromtheheadoftheschoolregardingthecandidate’sabilitytobenefitfromsuchacourseofstudy.NocertificationrecommendationisissueduntiltheentireElementaryI-IIprogramiscompleted.

ApplicationProcess

Programapplicationsareavailableonlineatwww.seacoastcenter.comorfromourofficeviamailorfax.Theapplicationlistsaccompanyingmaterialsweconsiderinadmissions.Noapplicationcanbeprocessedbeforereceiptoftheapplicationfee.TheApplicationFormatwww.seacoastcenter.comprovidesimportantinformationregardingAdmissionsrequirements.

Non-CertificationParticipants

Inthecaseofindividualswhodonotsatisfycriteriaforadmissionforcertificationbutwhowishtoparticipatefullyintheprogram,theCourseDirectorwilldeterminethecandidate’sabilitytobenefitfromparticipationandmayofferadmissionwithoutcertificationintentathisdiscretion.Theapplicationprocessisthesameasforacertificationcandidateandenrollmentonthisbasisdoesnotnecessarilyreducetuitionorfees.Indeterminingtheabilitytobenefit,particularattentionwillbegiventothepersonalstatementandlettersofrecommendationsuppliedwiththeapplication.

Additionally,theCourseDirectorgenerallywillrequestastatementofneedfromaMontessorischooldirectorattestingtotheindividual’ssuitabilityforemploymentatthechosenlevel.

Stateandlocaljurisdictionsvarywithrespecttorequirementsforcriminalbackgroundchecksforteachersandchild-careserviceproviders.SeacoastCenterdoesnotcollectormaintainsuchinformation.

Courseparticipantsenteringapracticumarerequiredtocomplywithpoliciesofthepracticumsiteinthismatter.

TransferCredit

Courseworksimilartothatoftheelementarycertificationprogramwhichhasbeencompletedmaybeacceptedinpartialfulfillmentofcourserequirementsforamaximumofone-thirdoftheacademicclockhoursforthecourseaccordingtocriteriaestablishedbyAMS.AMSdoesnotaccepttransferofcreditfromunaccreditedMontessoriinstitutions.

ApplicantswhofeeltheycandemonstratecompliancewiththedefinitionsandstandardsestablishedbyAMSmaypetitioninwritingtotheCourseDirectorforadvancedstatus.TheCourseDirectormayrequestspecificinformationfromtheapplicant,includingsubmissionofmaterialsandalbumsandwrittenstatementsconcerningpreviousexperience.AComprehensiveExaminationFeemayapplyinthiseventatthediscretionoftheCourseDirector.Acceptanceofpreviousworktowardadvancedstatuswillnotnecessarilyreducetheapplicant'sfinancialobligationforfulltuitionandfeesfortheprogram.

Attendance

Note:Alladultlearnersareexpectedtoindicatepresenceuponarrivalanddepartureorverifypresenceonsitebyreliableelectronicmethods.AcademicPhase(academicsessionsandseminars):Given the compacted time schedule for this program, attendance at all sessions offered isrequiredunless excusedby theCourseDirector. TheCourseDirectorwill have the right toexcuseabsencesprovided:1. Theadultlearnerpresentsareasonableplaninwritingforcompensatoryworkrelateddirectlytosubjectmattermissed.2. Thetotalnumberofcontacthoursmisseddoesnotexceed10%oftheprogramstotalhoursor20%ofanysinglecurriculumarea.3. Theadultlearneracknowledgesresponsibilityforallworkmissedduringsuchperiods.

Withpriorarrangementandawrittenrequest,contenthoursmissedmaybemadeupduringscheduledlabtimesatanapprovedsiteunderthedirectionofaqualifiedfacultymember.ThisserviceisprovidedsolelyatthediscretionoftheCenter.

Tardiness

Tardinessamountingtomorethan40%ofanysingleclasssessionwillbeconsideredasabsencefortheentiresessionwithsubsequentlossofcreditforallclassclockhoursassignedtothatsession.

SupervisedPracticeLabs

Supervisedpracticelabsessionscontributetothetotalnumberofhoursandarenotoptionalwhentheytakeplaceduringstatedcoursehours.Labperiodsconductedwithinspecificcontentareatimesduringthedayareusedforpracticeinthatcontentareaunlessotherwisedirectedbythefacultymemberprovidingtheclass.

AttendanceDuringPracticumPhase

AMSrequirementsforthepracticumphaseinclude1080hours,typicallyafulldaynine-monthpositioninanage-appropriateclassroom.ExceptionstothismodelmayberequestedinwritingtotheCourseDirector.CumulativeattendanceatthepracticumsitemustbeconsistentwithAMSpracticumrequirements.Asteachingprofessionals,adultlearnersareexpectedtoconformtopersonnelpoliciesoftheirpracticumsiteswithrespecttoabsence,compensation,andcontinuingresponsibilityforperformanceofduties.Achronicorprotractedrecordofabsenceortardinessmaybegroundsfordisqualificationofthepracticumexperience.

TheSeacoastMontessoriElementaryIandElementaryI-IIprogramassessesandevaluatesadultlearnerprogressbyseveralmeansduringtheprogramcycle:

1. Areviewandcritiqueofselectedalbumnotationsandillustrations.2. Supervisedpracticelabsessions.AdultLearnersareexpectedtomaintainalogoftheir

TheCourseDirectorwillrecommendcandidatestotheAmericanMontessoriSocietyfortheappropriatelevelofElementaryCertificationupon:

1. Completionandfavorableevaluationofcourseassignments.2. Attendanceataminimumof90%ofacademicsessionsandseminars,withabsencesexcusedasdefinedinAttendancePolicies.3. DemonstrationofcompetencyinallareasofworkwithMontessoriapparatusforwhichpracticalexaminationsaregiven.

4. CriteriaforWithdrawalandDismissal

Instructorswhohaveconcernsaboutanadultlearner’sacademiccapability,abilitytodealpositivelyandappropriatelywithchildren,manipulatematerials,and/orworkeffectivelywithadultswillimmediatelyinformtheCourseDirectorofthesituation.Ifappropriate,theCourseDirectorwillarrangeaconferencewiththeadultlearner.Ifcauseisdemonstrated,anadultlearnermaybeplacedonacademicprobation.TheCourseDirectorandfacultywillworkwiththestudenttoattempttoalleviatetheareaofconcern.Intheeventofcontinueddifficultyintheaboveareastheadultlearnermaybeaskedtoleave,atwhichtimeanotherappealmaybemade.UltimateresponsibilityfordismissalwillrestwiththeCourseDirector.Refundsbasedonwithdrawalordismissalwillfollowadvertisedguidelinesforrefunds.

Intheeventofthewithdrawalordismissalofanadultlearner,allwrittenrecordsconcerningacademicperformanceremaininthecumulativefileforaperiodofthreeyearsattheCenter'smainoffice.

AdultLearnerFees

Uponpaymentoftheprofessionalfees,registrationinformationwillbesubmittedtheAmericanMontessoriSocietyandtotheMontessoriAccreditationCouncilforTeacherEducation.AdultlearnerswillreceiveapracticummembershipinAMSwithitsaccompanyingrightsandprivileges.PaymentforpracticumfeesshouldbepayabletoSeacoastCenterforEducation.TheAmericanMontessoriSocietyandMACTEdonotacceptfeesdirectlyfromadultlearners.

Academic sessions, seminars and supervised practice sessions are considered in calculation ofrefunds. Payment plans are offered for the convenience of individual or client schools only.Tuition for the full program is due upon enrollment, with refunds based upon the followingguidelines:

FullRefund

Applicationfeeswillbereturnedifcancelledwithinthreebusinessdaysofreceipt.Afullrefundoftuitionwillbemadeifwithdrawaltakesplacewithinthreebusinessdaysofthefirstclass.

PartialRefunds

Tuitionagreementsmaybecancelledwithinthreedaysofthedateofsigningwithoutpenalty.Anadultlearnerwhowithdrawsorisdismissedafterthreedaysofclassbutbeforecompleting50%oftheprogramisentitledtoaproratarefund,ascalculatedbelow,lessaone-timeapplicationfeeof$350or20%oftheprogramtuition,whicheverisless.

Theproratarefundistheratioofthenumberoftwo-hourclasssessionsremainingafterthelastsessioncompletedbytheadultlearnertothetotalnumberofsessionsintheprogram,roundeddownwardtothenearest10percent.Therefundistheresultingpercentappliedtothetotaltuitionforthecourse.

Materialsfeesmayberefundedinallorpartatthediscretionoftheprogramifallmaterialssuppliedarereturnedwithinfivebusinessdaysofwithdrawalorcancellationinaconditionthatallowsustoredistributethemtootheradultlearners.

Ourgoalandhopeistocreateaneducationalenvironmentinwhichproblemsareresolvedcollegially,andwithprofessionalcommunicationlevelsofhighquality.Allindividuals,whetherstudentsorcontractedpersonnelinvolvedwithSeacoastCenterforEducationanditsprogramshavetherighttodueprocess,respect,andappropriatechannelsforsolvingproblemsrelatedtous.

GrievanceProcedure

Formainsiteandnon-contractadditionallocations:

Intheeventofcontinuingdifficulty,anArbitrationCommitteeisformedtoresolveconflictsrelatedtoSeacoastCenter'sperformanceofdutiesintheareasspecifiedbelowortheAdult'sperformanceofresponsibilitiesalsopresentedbelow.

SeacoastCenter'sArbitrationCommitteewillconsistoftheCourseDirector,onecorefacultymemberappointedbythedirector,anAdultlearnerenrolledintheprogramandelectedbythestudentbody,andastaffmembertoserveasanalternateintheeventofaconflictofinterest.IntheeventthattheelectedrepresentativetotheGrievanceCommitteeisbringingagrievancetothecommittee,theroleofthatpersoninthevotingshallbeassumedbythatwhohasreceivedthesecond-highestnumberofvotesintheelectionforcommitteerepresentative.

GrievancesagainsttheCenteranditsstaffwillbeheardbythecommitteeinthefollowingareas:1. Incompleteordeficienttrainingandfailuretoprovidesufficientremedywherethisconcernisperceivedorreported.2.
