A Message from our Pastor On Feb 9, 2014 Pope Francis centered his Angelus message this Sunday on the image of a Christian whose faith is like a burning lamp that brings light to the darkness. “We must carry the light of Christ with the witness of a genuine love,” encouraged the Pope. “The Christian must be a luminous person who carries the light, a light that comes from one that is not his own, but a gift of God, a gift of Jesus. We carry this light forward!” If a Christian loses this light, “his life doesn’t make sense. He is a Christian in name only,” Pope Francis cautioned. Departing from his prepared remarks, the pontiff turned to query the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square. “I want to ask you now, how do you want to live? As a lamp that is lit, or one that is off?” “I can’t hear your response!” he said, urging the crowd to reply louder. “A lit lamp!” he affirmed, “This is the Christian vocation!” Sunday’s gospel passage recounted Jesus’ encouragement to his disciples, “you are the salt of the earth…you are the light of the world.” This story might “surprise us a little,” noted Pope Francis, “if we think of who was in front of Jesus when he said these words.” The disciples were mere “fishermen, simple people...but Jesus saw them with the eyes of God.” Christ “wanted to say to them: if you will be poor in spirit, if you will be gentle, if you will be pure of heart, if you will be merciful, you will be the salt of the earth and the light of the world!” Such a calling extends to all Christians, the Pope explained. “All of us who are baptized are missionary disci-ples and we are called to become a living gospel in the world: with a holy life we will give ‘flavor’ to diverse settings and preserve them from decay, as salt does.” Before concluding with his usual “I wish everyone a good Sunday and a good lunch,” the Pope paused for a moment to ask again, “A lit lamp, or a lamp that is off? Which do you want?” “A lit lamp!” the crowd enthusiastically replied. “A Christian carries the light!” he affirmed. “He is a lit lamp. Always forward with the light of Jesus!” The last two year Lent themes were: 1. Salt of the world to bring out: 1. Good taste of others; 2. Preserve the Truth; 3. Promote thirst for God's

Word and Sacraments. 2.The only human made thing in heaven - the nail hole on Jesus hands and feet. That we will nail our sins with Him so we can raise with Him! The theme for our parish family this lent will be "YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD!" Each one of you will be given a candle - and you need to bring them to Sunday mass! After you receive communion, then you will light your candle from the altar candle and bring the lit candle back to your seats and pray! For fami-ly, church, country and most for those who returning to the Faith! (The book, “RETURN,” helps)! At the end of each mass - the sending forth song will be "You are the light of the world, might your light shine before them - that they might see, the good that you do and give glory to GOD”! 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal This year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal theme is: Our Return to the Lord. It is time for us to do what we can to support not only our Diocese but the programs and ministries that benefit our parish and our Catholic commu-

nity. The BAA supports our Catholic Schools and the education of our future priest and deacons. The BAA supports ministries that change lives for the better. We are blessed with much; let us be a blessing to others. Our 2017 Parish Goal is: $26,855.00. Last week we collected $747.00 in one time pledges from our parish collection envelopes. Thank you for those who partici-pated. For future donations, please be sure to make checks payable to the Bishops Annual Appeal and not to St. Boniface. You may drop your pledge in the col-lection basket and we will mail your donation for you. It is easier to keep track of pledges when made directly to Bishops Annual Appel. Making money and spending money becomes the center of their life and they actually become a slave to money. The solution – become more generous. Giving money to Church and charity frees us from slavery to money and from making money a “god” before God. WHAT MONEY CAN BUY: A bed BUT NOT sleep. Books BUT NOT brains. Food BUT NOT appetite. Finery BUT NOT beauty. A house BUT NOT a home. Medicine BUT NOT health. Luxuries BUT NOT culture. Amusement BUT NOT happiness. A crucifix BUT NOT a savior A church pew BUT NOT heaven. The Low Country Catholics would like to invite all Young Adults in the Savannah area to join together for a fellow-ship Mass and brunch every 1st Sunday of the month, beginning on March 5th. We will be attending the 10:00 AM Mass at the Cathedral and get brunch after-wards at one of the many delicious restaurants nearby. We will meet 15 minutes before Mass outside the central Cathe-dral doors, and will stick around after Mass for anyone who would like to just join for brunch. Hope to see you there!"

We begin our Lenten Season with Masses at 12:00 noon and 7:00 pm on Wednes-day, March 1. Stations of the Cross will be held on Friday evenings at 6:30 pm and Mass at 7:00 pm. We will follow with a meatless meal, and we ask that everyone who will attend bring a meatless dish to

share. Fr. Martino will conclude the evening with a re-flection message. The Lenten Penance Service will be held on Wednesday, March 8, at 7:00 pm. Come get your “oil change” so that we may make our journey with Christ through this Lenten season.

VIRTUS “Protecting God’s Children for Adults” Training will be held at St. Anne Church (Richmond Hill) on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 9:00 AM This is a 3 hour session. Registration is required prior to attending via online at VIRTUS.org to receive credit for the session. No one under the age of 18 is allowed due to the sensitive sub-ject matter. Sacramental preparation

Confirmation will be celebrated on Saturday, April 22, at 5 pm Mass, and second-graders will receive First Communion at 11 am Mass on Sunday, April 30. If your child will be receiving either of these sacraments, please make sure that he or she has completed all requirements, learned prayers and turned in the appropriate paperwork. Please see your child’s catechist with any questions.

Youth Question of the Week

“GOOD, BETTER, BEST. NEVER LET IT REST. TILL YOUR GOOD IS BETTER AND YOUR BETTER IS BEST!” WHO SAID THAT?

DON’T BE ANXIOUS People have, it seems, a natural penchant for mis-placed emphasis on unimportant things. They can easily get caught up with what they’re having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What’s for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn’t say, “Don’t eat. Don’t cook. Don’t buy clothes.” He says, “Don’t worry.” Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that “Your heavenly Father knows” all that you need (Matthew 6:32). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Rite of Election For Candidates/Catechumens The Rite of Election will take place Sunday, March 5 at 3:30 pm at the Cathedral of St. John Baptist, Savannah. Please keep our Candidate and Catechu-mens in your prayers as they prepare for the Sacra-ment of Initiation at Easter. The Rite of Election closes the Period of the Cate-chumenate. This rite normally coincides with the first Sunday of Lent. At this rite, upon the testimony of sponsors and catechists and the catechumens' af-firmation of their intention to join the Church, the Church makes its "election" of these catechumens to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. In the presence of the bishop (or his delegate), they inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect at the cathedral as a pledge of fidelity. Now the catechumens are called "the elect' or "the illuminandi" ("those who will be enlightened"). They now begin a Period of Purifica-tion and Enlightenment — the final, intense prepa-ration for the reception of the Sacraments of Initia-tion. On the next five Sundays of Lent, three scruti-nies (rites for self-searching and repentance) and the presentations of the Creed and Lord's Prayer take place. This period concludes with the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.

Answer: SAINT JEROME. (347-420) He was a priest, confes-sor, theologian, and historian. He is most famous for translating the Bible from Greek and Aramaic into Latin. It took him 23 years. Jerome also wrote: “Ignorance of Scriptures is Igno-rance of Christ”
