HOLY FAITH EPISCOPAL CHURCH

FROM THE VICAR’S DESK

Happy Easter to you and your family! We had a great Holy Week and Easter Sunday celebration this year. During Holy Week, Holy Faith offered meditations and the celebration of the Eucharist on Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday. Maundy Thursday, from the Latin word Mantadum which means Commandment, based on Jesus’ new commandment, “Love one another,” was a solemn worship. Now imagine Holy Faith leading the Diocese in this ministry once we find the key to unlock the doors that will produce a successful bilingual service! Imagine Holy Faith producing bilingual hymns, bilingual liturgy, and bilingual ministries! This will mean that churches in the Diocese and in the nation will use us as a mod-el for successful bilingual services. The point is that when we give up something without trying hard, with-out making the effort, when we fail to see the positive side of it, we end up missing the blessings that comes with it.

I would like to encourage you to review with me the events we offered during Holy Week and Easter at Holy Faith and help me find better ways to improve for next year. But before you make a list of suggested changes, think of the ones that your time, talent and treasure can help us make a difference next year!

Blessings,

Fr. Orlando J. Addison

saciones como un proceso de aprendizaje y no como obstáculos. No hay que darse por vencido cuando algo no funciona bien;

mundo . Continuado en la p.5

THANK YOU I have become somewhat an expert on hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Holy Faith found me, prayed for me, visited me, and kept me up to date on all the goings on at the church. Thank you. A special thanks for my visitors: Father Orlando, Bonnie Claren, Shirley Heath, and Gwen Horne. You were all truly a blessing to me. Thank you. Each day Charlene would bring me a list of each of you who had called and what you had said. I did not realize how many true friends I had made at Holy Faith. May God bless each of you. Thank you. The cards - the cards, some were funny, some were pretty, some played me music, some were well wishing, some were of a religious theme. Some had one name and some had many, but each meant so much to me. May God send his special blessings to each and every one of you who took time to think of me over the last two months. WAYNE GRIFFIN

¡Bendiciones!

Fare Thee Well, dear Rudy...

Oddly enough, my first conversation with Rudolph Stephen-

son was after I placed an obituary for a relative of his in the

Good News. He took exception to words that I used, and the

next month, I corrected my error, and he came back with

wonderful praise for me. We served on the Search Commit-

tee for our new Priest together, and he was always so positive

and enthusiastic, as was his wife, Merle.

His family, as witnessed by those of us who attended his fu-

neral, were as he always was, gentle, kind, loving, and caring

of everyone they met. His son, Kevin, gave us all an endur-

ing portrait of his father as a parent, a teacher, and guide for

his life, and the lives of his sisters, Sandra and Karen. Karen

spoke so well of her father. Even grandson Tayo, had things

to say about this grandparent that he will miss so much.

In fact, his church family seemed to feel our loss as did the

family. Every person I spoke with had a different version of

what a fine man he was, and what a good friend he was to

everyone who knew him. I weep for our loss, as did so many

others, but I'm sure his place in Heaven is as his place here on

earth was throughout his life.

Godspeed to you, Rudolph, just knowing you made me a bet-

ter person.

BIBLE BRAIN QUEST

Adam took care of all the plants in the Garden of Eden.

Who was his helper? (Genesis 2)

What did God place in the heavens as a symbol of His

pledge to Noah and his family? (Genesis 9)

Name the city whose walls fell down when the trum-

pets blared and the Israelites shouted. (Joshua 6)

In Jesus’ first miracle, did he heal a blind man or

change water into wine? (John 2)

According to Proverbs 6, what tiny insect can teach us

about hard work?

Arrange these books of the New Testament in the

proper order: Luke, Matthew, John, Mark.

(Juan 2)

orden correcto: Lucas, Mateo, Juan, Marcos.

MEDITACION

puedes hacerle mala cara a tu hermano hebreo necesitado y

no darle nada.

sotros mismos?

MEDITATION

"9 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: “The

seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near,” so

that you do not show ill will toward the needy among

your fellow Israelites and give them nothing. They

may then appeal to the LORD against you, and you

will be found guilty of sin. 10 Give generously to them

and do so without a grudging heart;then because of

this the LORD your God will bless you in all your

work and in everything you put your hand to."

Deuteronomy 15:9-10

There is a phenomenon described by social psycholo-

gists as a "bystander effect." Basically, the more peo-

ple are in a situation that requires action, it is less like-

ly that any will really respond. Research continues on

the mechanisms to find the reason why this happens,

but much of it seems to come from the idea "someone

else will do it." Someone else will give something to

eat to the man on the corner. Someone else will or-

ganize the garage sale for the Meeting Day. Someone

else will visit the old lady who usually sits in the next

pew.

But Scripture asks us wondering: Why do you wait to

show mercy? Why are you waiting to "give a hand"?

Do we think that help will come from an external

source? Did we forget that we are the hands of God

on earth, that we are called to love our neighbors as

ourselves?

Peasants in Binaba, Ghana (Africa), know this. When

they work together so that no one needs to clean the

brush from their land by themselves, they give freely

of their time and effort, knowing that help will come

to them when they need it, and the skills and

knowledge help everyone's crops to bloom and grow.

Musings on Love Demonstrated I have had two reminders over the past few weeks that

“ procrastination is the thief of time”. Listening to Na-

tional Public Radio (NPR), I was again reminded that

Heathcote Botanical Gardens will hold its bi-annual

plant sale on the first weekend in May. That got me to

thinking about an occasion, exactly two years ago,

when I was privileged to visit just such a plant sale.

For me, though, this sale was different.

Two of Holy Faith’s most dedicated members who

were aware of my love for plants insisted that I attend

the sale with them. I could not imagine how I could

attend, for this body was so wracked with pain that

there was no way that I could walk around the

grounds of the botanical gardens. At first I declined

vehemently, but the ladies insisted. How would I nav-

igate such a vast expanse when it was excruciating

even to move around my own home?

With the aid of the wheel chair that is reserved for dis-

abled visitors to Holy Faith, the two ladies (and you

know who you are) took turns pushing me around the

grounds – along paved as well as unpaved paths. I

was able to enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of eve-

rything that the gardens and the vendors had to offer.

Needless to say, this was at once one of the most lov-

ing and humbling gestures that I had ever experienced.

The words of the song “he ain’t heavy, he’s my brother

“ came to mind. I shall be forever grateful to these

two ladies for their demonstration of Christian love

and caring. “See how those Christians love each oth-

er”, “and they’ll know we are Christians by our love”.

Thanks be to God for his healing power. Thank you

ladies! I did express my gratitude to you privately on

that day. Here, let me acknowledge your caring love

publicly. I have procrastinated long enough!
