February 21, 2016 ~~~ Second Sunday of Lent

The Transfiguration of Christ

From the Pastor’s Desk: Nota de nuestro pastor: It is not uncommon to hear the question, “Why does the church collect money?” or “Why do the churches ask for money?” The answer to this question is a counter question, “Why do the families need money?” or “Why do the families depend on monthly salary?” The families depend

on the monthly salaries to pay for the house rent, to pay for PG&E, to buy grocery, to pay for the tuition fee of children, to purchase dress, to pay for medicine etc. So also the church needs money to pay for the PG&E, to pay for the insurance, to repair and to maintain the buildings, to purchase liturgical things, to pay salary to the full time and part time employees, to pay for the food and maintenance of the priests, to build new buildings to cater to the ever growing needs, to help the poor and the needy etc.

Just as a family needs money to run the family and just as a church needs money to keep it going, so also the diocese needs money to keep going. Like the church and the diocese you do not see or hear the government asking for money. But it collects money by way of taxes whether you like it or not. It is out of the taxes it collects from us, the government is able to meet all the expenditures. Therefore, any failure to pay the tax will lead you to count bars in the prison! Like the government, the church and the diocese do not impose or collect tax on us. It appeals to us to contribute. Many Christian denominations such as the Pentecostal churches, the Seventh day Adventists etc, demand 10% of the income of their followers. And it is surprising that the followers these denominations consider it their religious duty to contribute 10% of their income to their church. And they do contribute without fail and feel proud of doing so. (What has surprised me most is that those Catholics who have gone and joined the Pentecostal churches, too, faithfully contribute 10% of their income without fail and speak proudly of doing so!) But we Catholics who are much more educated and affluent than the followers of the Pentecostal and the Seventh Day Adventists fail to contribute even 2% of our income to the church.

St. Joachim church is a unit of the diocese of Oakland. We belong to the diocese of Oakland. As an organization, our church has no existence apart from the diocese. We share in its achievements and failures. We share in its concerns as much as we share in its strengths. The diocese needs our help to maintain its personnel, buildings, to impart our faith to our children and youth, to provide education to our less fortunate children and migrants, to provide counseling to couples who are struggling in their marital relationship, to care for the aged and dying, to care for its aged priests, to take care of the poor and homeless etc. This week is the week of Bishop’s Appeal – a week to show your generosity to the diocese. Remember the story of Abel and Cain. Yes, God loves a generous giver.

Francis met with the president of Mexico, the diplomatic corp. and with the Bishops of Mexico, then held Holy Mass at the Basilica at the Shrine near the ‘Tepeyac’ hill above Mexico City where Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in 1519. In the twentieth century Pope Pius XI declared our Lady of Guadalupe Queen of Mexico and Patroness and Protectress of Latin America. His successor Peter Pius XII stepped this up to include all the Americas. Juan Diego was one of the few native Aztecs Indians who had been baptized and converted to Catholicism by the Franciscans of the conquering Spanish. The apparition he saw of the Blessed Virgin Mary, named by the Spaniards of 'Guadalupe' brought together the culture of the Spaniards and Aztecs. ‘Our Lady” appeared as a 'mestizo', of mixed race as can be seen in the image that she left during her fourth apparition to Juan Diego on his simple sack-cloth garment tied at the shoulder, known as 'tilma'. That artefact together with a text dating back to the 16th century are all the tangibly remains to explain this apparition but after which eight million native American Indians converted to the Catholic faith. And now in the 21st century the first Latin America Pope has celebrated Holy Mass with the Guadalupe faithful, adding his very own touch to the devotion by crowning her with a gold and silver tiara.

On Sunday at Ecatepec a very dangerous suburb of Mexico City, with 1.6 million people, with one of the highest murder rates in the country, and where hundreds of women have been killed or have disappeared, Pope Francis held Holy Mass in front of 300,000 people. He urged them to create a county free of emigration and ‘merchants of death.’ He touched on two major themes, drug violence and the plight of migrants. He urged his flock to turn the country into a 'land of opportunity,' where 'there will be no need to emigrate in order to dream' and where they will 'not have to mourn men and women, young people and children who are destroyed at the hands of the merchants of death.' Pope Francis then went on to spend the afternoon visiting the Federico Gomez Children’s Hospital in Mexico City. With a staff of 2,700, the hospital takes great care of their little patients with ailments such as cancer, genetic malformation and neurological disorders. Two children ran bells in the presence of the Pope to signal their recoveries. The Pope’s visit was a moment of joy amid the harsh reality of families accompanying their children to the hospital. The families are so poor and without lodging that they have to sleep in the very cold streets outside the hospital. Pope Francis said he told the children that he asked “God to bless you, and to accompany you and your families, and all those people who work in this home and try to ensure that your smiles grow day by day." to be continued …Sources: news.va, dailymail.co.uk, Vatican Radio

Why Should I Give to the Bishop's Appeal?

The word “Catholic” means “universal,” and our faith cares for all our sisters and brothers regardless of the parish in which they worship. One should give to the Appeal because there are certain ministries and services that cannot be provided by a parish, but only by a diocese. Can a parish recruit, educate, and form seminarians? Can a parish pay for a pension and needed medical care for our retired clergy? Can a parish support a diaconate program and ethnic ministries? Can a parish support schools and other parishes facing financial distress or an unexpected emergency? Some people may say that as long as we support our parish, we should not be concerned with the needs of other parishes, schools, recruitment, education and formation of our future clergy, and forming our youth and young adults in our faith beyond our own parish. Through the Bishop’s Appeal, the diocese is able to carry out these ministries which is only possible through the generosity of our parishioners. Below are the various programs and ministries funded through the Bishop’s Appeal: Faith & Formation Religious Education & Formation Support for Catholic Schools & Parishes in Need Clergy Formation & Support Assisting Local Parishes Safe Environment Programs
