SECTION 2This Section contains three texts. Read the three texts and follow the directions for each.

Text OneRead the following newspaper article and then answer the questions

A TAIWANESE student has died after falling from the top floor of a

student hostel in north Birmingham. The accident happened on Thursday evening

in the residential area of the university.

    by Stephen Slater

According to the coroner, who carried out the post-mortem at

University College Hospital, Birmingham, Kim Jung Chan, 27, died of multiple

injuries caused by the fall. He was taken to the hospital immediately after

the accident but died on Friday morning. Police have spoken to other

residents of the 120 room student block and do not regard the incident as

    suspicious.

Chan, a married man with 2 children, was half-way through an eight-

week pre-sessional English course at the Language Centre of University

College, Birmingham. His plans were to remain at the university to study for

a Masters degree in the agricultural science. The college administrator, Dr.

Huggins, said: It is true that many of our overseas students experience

difficulties adapting to life in Birmingham but we have trained counselors to

help make the adjustment easier. In the case of Chan, this is a total shock.

I dontknow if his death had anything to do with any problems he may have

had in Britain. We will have to wait for the verdict of the inquest before

deciding whether we need to give closer supervision in the future.

The inquest has been adjourned until the second week in October.

    Sharks hardly ever attackswimmers. Unless.........

    American Times

    Vero Beach, Florida

For a 9-year old, Willie Teller was a decentswimmer. But he should never have ventured40 yards offshore on a recent Saturday picnichere, reaching a water depth of 10 feet beforehis father realized something was wrong. The boy could have been caught by one of

the local rip tides, currents that strong adultswimmers often find impossible to fight. Hecould have had his neck twisted by a big wave.He wasnt.

Willie was dragged underwater and torn todeath by a tiger shark. That made him thefirst shark fatality near an American beach in22 years.Fatalities are extremely rare in Florida butwhat was disturbing this time was that it was achild, according to Professor George Burgess, director of the Florida Shark Attack File. If hewas flailing his arms, the shark may have beenattracted by the movements. They use thestandard predatory strategy of any animal, going after the weak or infirm.

People are fascinated by sharks. We probablyfear shark attack more than hurricanes orearthquakes. Tigers can usually be controlled

with a well-placed shot. But sharks aresomething we cant control, they have theupper hand in a one-to-one encounterThe last time a shark killed anyone in the US

was in 1988 but that was a deep waterswimmer who had dived off a boat. The lastAmerican shoreline swimmer killed in a sharkattack was in 1976, the year after the film Jawswas made. You have a much better chance of winningthe Florida lottery than of encountering a sharkon our coastline Professor Burgess likes tosay. He produces statistics showing that more

people in Florida were killed by alligators thanby sharks over the last 50 years and thatAmericans are more likely to be killed bylightning than by a shark. Take 1987, whenthere were only 13 shark bite injuries in theUS, he says. In New York City alone thatyear, there were 8,064 cases of dog biteshuman, 1,587 cases of human bites humanand 98 cases of squirrel bites human.

You are staying in Antigua, Guatemala. A friend from Mexico has written to you to tell

you that she would like to visit you for a few days in Antigua. Read your friends letter

carefully and find the answers to her questions by reading the advertisement below.

Then write a reply to your friend. Write about 150 words.

    Hi!

I am thinking of coming down to see you in Antigua! Wont that be wonderful? But I

only have about 5 days, and would really like to do as much as possible. You know

that I like outdoor activities and exercise - and a little culture, but not too much!

Will there be things that we can do together - during the day and in the evening? Is

Antigua very expensive? Will it cost a lot to do any special tours and activities? And,

if we want to do a tour away from Antigua for one day, is there anywhere we can go,

    by car or by bus?

Lots of questions, Im afraid. Do write and let me know your suggestions. And see you

    soon!
