PRESENT PERFECT vs. SIMPLE PAST TENSE

The Present Perfect Tense is used to talk about things that happened at an unspecified, unfinished period of time. It is used to answer the questions: Have you..?, Have you ever..? or How long have you..?

A: Have you ever been to Iquitos?

B: Yes, I have been there twice this year.

• I was in Iquitos two times this year.(unfinished time – “this year” However it is not specific about when exactly the action happened.

The Simple Past Tense is used to talk about things that happend at a specific, finished period of time.

A: Have you ever won a lottery?B: Yes, I have. In fact, I won a lottery last year.

• The sentence is specific that it was last year when I won the lottery. “Last year” is a finished time.

Here are some examples of expressions of finished and unfinished periods of time.

She has been there two times today.

The Present Perfect tense, when used with “for” and “since”, expresses a situation that started in the past and continues up to now.

My dad has been sick since last week.(He is still sick)

He has had a terrible fever for 4 days now.(he still has fever)

He has stayed home since he became ill.(He is still home)

The Simple Past Tense is used to talk about things that started and finished in the past.

I liked to read a lot when I was a little girl. (I don`t like to read a lot now)

I participated a lot in class.(I do not participate a lot now)

I used to have many friends.(I don`t have many friends now)

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE AND PAST SIMPLE: DIFFERENCES.

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE

USE:

Time until now. For something that started in the past and continues up to the present. To talk about an indefinite time up to the present (with “ever”, “never”).

PAST SIMPLE USE:

With a finished time. For something that started and finished in the past. To talk about a definite time in the past (last year, yesterday…).

To ask when something happened. “When?”, “What time?”
