stencilsStencils have become the favorite of thousands of artists the worldover, basically because of the speed and quality they offer. We cansay that stencils are classifiable as graffiti because they can be inclu-ded in the concept of illegality which is implicit in the term. The use of stencils as a mode of artistic expression goes back to theParis of the early 1990s, which wanted to differentiate its graffitifrom the graffiti that originated in New York—which had been, untilthen, the only model for urban artists. Stencils are one more vehicle the artist can use to express his or herideas, whether protesting some current sociopolitical circumstanceor endlessly repeating his or her logos, drawings, and messages onany surface, as long as passersby can see it. Making a stencil requires any rigid material, such as plastic lamina-tes, cardboard, acetate, metal, wood, and even X-rays. After choo-sing the material, one draws or traces the motif with which theartist will later "bombard" the entire city. Sometimes, several stencils are produced for a single work, addingvarious shapes and colors and more suggestive finishes. So the artistwho works with stencils needs just three basic elements:

IDEA + STENCIL + SPRAY

On the street, he or she repeats the motif insistently, marking theterritory with the stencil as a tag. The more times the artist repeatshis or her logo, the more prestige and respect he or she will earnfrom the other artists who paint in the street.
