Valentine´s Day handouts Objetivo: Englishouse promueve el biculturalismo por medio de actividades fáciles de desarrollar en clase

haciendo uso de las siguientes worksheets.

Teachers: Los siguientes handouts se han creado con el propósito de promover el idioma inglés así como

vocabulario, estructuras gramaticales, actividades, entre otros dentro de su clase.

Es importante que consideren tener las evidencias en sus cuadernos o en un medio de exposición si así fuera

necesario.

ACTIVIDAD 1: en esta imagen se encuentra un breve resumen de la historia de San Valentín, dicha historia

puede ser utilizada solo como información general para el docente o realizar actividades con ella utilizando el

siguiente link: https://youtu.be/NgU_h-vI9as Aquí podrán realizar una tarjeta desplegable en la cual deberán

poner los acontecimientos más importantes de dicha historia.

ACTIVIDAD 2: esta actividad está diseñada para los alumnos más pequeños de kínder o primaria baja, en la

cual los pequeños deberán colorear de acuerdo al número, lo cual es ideal para un repaso rápido de colores y

números.

ACTIVIDAD 3: en esta actividad los alumnos deberán crear un acróstico utilizando la palabra LOVE, esta

actividad se recomiendo para alumnos que ya tiene un poco más de vocabulario; es ideal para practicar

writing skills y puede servir de tarjeta.

ACTIVIDAD 4: esta actividad puede servir para spelling y la práctica del alfabeto, ya que puede trabajarse de la

siguiente manera: crear un abecedario en forma de tarjetas entonces el docente puede dictar las palabras con

las tarjetitas del alfabeto y así formar las palabras para que al final el alumno con la copia en mano escriba las

letras faltantes.

ACTIVIDAD 5: esta actividad es ideal para pasar un momento agradable ya que los alumnos tendrán que crear

palabras utilizando las letras que están en los dos corazones, se puede establecer un tiempo límite para ver

quien hace el mayor número de palabras para después deletrearlas, lo cual es ideal para la práctica de

spelling.

ACTIVIDAD 6: la actividad está diseñada para que los alumnos practiquen las partes de una oración, como

adjetivos, sustantivos, etc., dicha actividad puede ser para los más grandes como complemento de alguna

actividad gramatical.

ACTIVIDAD 7: esta actividad puede ser utilizada como complemento de alguna otra ya que es una sopa de

letras que puede ser utilizada para cualquier edad.

ACTIVIDAD 8: esta actividad puede ser utilizada con alumnos de cualquier edad pero lo más conveniente es

que sea utilizada con los alumnos de Primaria baja para que vayan conociendo vocabulario o bien como

práctica de spelling. La idea es que los alumnos relacionen la palabra con la imagen.

ACTIVIDAD 9: esta actividad es ideal para que los más pequeños desarrollen habilidades visuales ya que es un

pequeño laberinto muy sencillo.

ACTIVIDAD 10: la actividad puede ser utilizada como complemento para repasar los números con los alumnos

más pequeños del colegio o como ayuda si tenemos algún alumno que necesite repasar los números ya que el

grado de dificultad puede variar desde solo poner el número y repetirlo oralmente o escribirlo con letra para

que también repase spelling.

ACTIVIDAD 11: esta es una lectura dirigida a los alumnos más grandes (5to, 6to de primaria y Secundaria) en

donde deberán seguir una serie de pasos para poder completar la actividad, deberán buscar antonimos,

contestar preguntas, etc.

ACTIVIDAD 12: esta actividad es para los alumnos de secundaria y 6to año de primaria, el docente deberá

imprimir, cortar y doblar los corazones con los temas para que por turnos los alumnos tomen un papel y

hablen por un minuto sin parar sobre el tema que eligieron al azar.

ACTIVIDAD 13: se anexan varios links para que el docente elija la actividad de su gusto para crear tarjetas,

decoraciones, etc.(se deberá tomar en cuenta la edad de los alumnos)

THE STORY OF ST. VALENTINE

St. Valentine was a Christian priest who lived in 270 A. D. at that time, the Roman government controlled much of

the world. The Roman government needed many soldiers to protect its lands. The emperor Claudius II decided that

married men did not make good soldiers because they wanted to stay at home with their wives and children. He

made a very strange law that said Young men were not allowed to marry. He also said that any priest who married

a Young couple would be put to death. A priest named Valentine disobeyed the Emperor. He secretly married many

Young couples. When the Emperor found it out, he had Valentine imprisoned. Since Valentine had helped lovers, the

day he died became a day for people to express love for others.

Valentine’s Day Around the World

Valentine's Day has been commercialised to a great extent in this country. It is estimated that it is one of

the most popular days to send cards in the country. Days before the festival, shop owners create a festive

look to lure consumers. Popular gifts that are exchanged on the day include cards, fresh flowers (mainly

roses) and chocolates. An interesting part of Valentine's Day in this country are the celebrations organised

by kids. Schools organise Valentine's Day programmes where children perform songs, dances, and plays.

Children also give handmade gifts and cards to their friends and teachers.

Unmarried girls in this country (and also in Italy) used to wake up before dawn on Valentine's Day. They

believed that the first man they saw on Valentine's Day would marry them within a year. Therefore, girls

used to rise early to stand by their window and wait hopefully for the man to pass.

There’s a strong tradition of women giving chocolates to men on Valentine’s Day in this country. Two

types of chocolate are popular for Valentine's Day. The girls buy one type of chocolate (called giri-choco)

for friends, bosses, colleagues and close male friends. However, it’s slightly different for boyfriends, lovers

or husbands. In this instance, girls buy chocolates called hon-mei. Many girls think that it is not true love if

they buy Valentine's Day chocolates for their boyfriend and therefore hon-mei-choco is usually prepared

by girls themselves. Men feel lucky if they receive hon-mei chocolates on Valentine's Day.

Young couples write special love poems, romantic love notes, and funny poems known as 'gaekkebrev'. It

is customary for the sender of gaekkebrev to write a rhyme for his beloved. He is not required to put his

name on it. Instead, he signs the message with dots. The girl who receives the card is supposed to guess

the name of the sender. If she is able to guess the right name, then she is rewarded with an 'Easter Egg' in

the same year.

Discussion: at this point or after activity 2, you could also ask students what they think about these different

traditions.

Activity 2 Synonym Answers: Where necessary give written examples on the board (I have mentioned any

synonyms which might need further explaining)

Part, extent, mainly, lure, exchanged - ‘to lure’ has a connection to the adjective ‘alluring’ which some

students recognised from the popular perfume ‘Allure’. ‘To what extent/degree do you agree’ has a similar

meaning to ‘How much do you agree’ which students found easy to understand.

Dawn, rise, hopefully, therefore

Therefore, type, slightly, buy, instance – instance can also be used to replace ‘example’ in ‘For example

(instance)’.

Beloved, customary, instead, require, funny – ‘customary’ can be replaced with the words ‘usual, traditional

and common’ which students also offered as synonyms.

‘Instead’ and ‘alternatively’ have a similar meaning, but it’s useful to highlight that ‘alternatively’ should be

used at the beginning of sentences, whereas ‘instead’ can go at the beginning or the end.

Activity 3:

The only thing I would mention here is that I did this with a group of Spanish students and ‘platonic love’ in

Spanish has a completely different definition to the one in England despite having the same name. Find out

the exact meaning from them as I can’t quite recall it!

Discussion: this activity can lead into some nice speaking practice about their experiences and opinions of each type of

love.
