Los Phrasal Verbs o
Verbos Compuestos en Inglés
Los “Phrasal Verbs” o “Verbos Compuestos” son un aspecto muy particular del inglés y que frecuentemente causa confusión entre las personas que están aprendiendo este idioma.
Los phrasal verbs son expresiones idiomáticas que se forman combinando verbos con preposiciones o adverbios. Esto da como resultado nuevos verbos compuestos con un significado muy distinto al que nos da el diccionario para los verbos individuales.
Por ejemplo el verbo “give” significa “dar”, pero si le agregamos el complemento “up”, tenemos “give up” que, según el diccionario, tiene los siguientes significados:
Como te puedes dar cuenta “give” es muy diferente de “give up”
► A continuación la definición gramatical de los phrasal verbs así como algunos ejemplos y explicaciones.
Definición: Un phrasal verb consiste de un verbo junto con una preposición o adverbio que modifica el sentido del mismo. A esta preposición o adverbio también se le puede llamar complemento.
Recuerda que las preposiciones o adverbios más usados para crear verbos compuestos son: on, off, in, for, up, back, about, out, along, over, away, etc. Y que

cuando los busques en el diccionario, los debes buscar juntos no por separado. Ejemplo:
Bring v. traer, llevar, ocasionar, causar; to____ about a problem might bring about a dismissal
Producir , efectuar, ocasionar; To ____ down bajar; They will bring up the subject in the meeting
To ___ forth dar a luz, producir; to _____ to resucitar; The staff pretends to bring forth a new system
