¡Estamos enamorados de las tortugas! Durante los meses de febrero a septiembre es la época de anidaje de tortugas y por eso decidimos dedicarle nuestra cuarta edición a las cuatro especies de tortugas que nadan y desovan en nuestras costas. En esta temporada podrás ver un carey o un tinglar (¡que puede crecer hasta 7 pies y pesar 1,400 libras!) en una de las playas de Culebra. Como parte de su desove, la tortuga llega a la arena y hace un hoyo con sus aletas traseras para depositar en él más de 100 huevos. Voluntarios ayudan delimitando el área para su protección. Cincuenta a sesenta días después, los huevos abrirán y las tortuguitas se arrastrarán hasta el mar. Si eres lo suficientemente afortunado de poder ver a la mamazota o aún más afortunado de ver a sus hijitos nacer, te imploramos que disfrutes el momento, pero nunca los toques. Tanto el tinglar como el carey están en la lista de animales en peligro de extinción y nosotros planificamos cambiarlo.

We’ve gone turtle crazy! Throughout the months of February to September is turtle nesting season and we dedicate this fourth issue to the four species of turtles that swim and nest in our shores. During this season you might see a hawksbill or a leatherback turtle (which can grow to be 7 feet long and weigh 1,400 pounds!) in one of Culebra’s beaches. As part of the nesting process, the turtle swims to shore at night, digs a whole with its back flippers to deposit over 100 eggs. Volunteers help out by setting the limits of the area for their protection. Fifty to sixty days later the eggs will hatch and a whole crowd of tiny turtles will crawl to shore. If you are lucky enough to see big momma or even luckier to welcome her kids into the world, we implore you to just take it in and please do not touch. Both leatherback and hawksbill turtles are in the list of endangered species and we intend on changing that.

By air...Culebra has various airlines operating from the Fernando L. Ribas Dominicci, Isla Grande Airport, located at the Puerto Rico Convention District in San Juan and the José Aponte de la Torre Airport, located, at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Ceiba.

Both airports have private parking lots for the safety of your vehicle with daily costs. Some airlines offer charter services to the Island and the cost may vary. Many use this alternative for groups of 8 people or less and can be scheduled to your convenience.

By SeaThere are different ways to travel to the island of Culebra. You can travel by sea on the ferry from the port of Fajardo, on your own boat or contract the services of a water taxi. Definitely, the most common way to travel is by ferry. The cost of the ticket is $2.25 including one bag. If you want to bring additional luggage the cost per item may vary.

Aunque pequeña en tamaño, Culebra está llena de actividades para hacer durante tu visita. Una de ellas es “hiking” o excursionismo. Estas caminatas cortas en Culebra te llevarán a playas tranquilas donde se puede practicar snorkeling (Playa Carlos Rosario) o el surfing (Playa Brava) o hasta al faro de Culebrita. Estos son algunos consejos para que su caminata sea memorable y, sobretodo, segura.

Vístete para la caminataTrae (o lleva puesto) tu traje de baño. Probablemente, estarás caminando desde o hacia la playa.

Usa tennis. Mientras algunos de los caminos se pueden caminar en chanclas, ¿realmente quieres caminar con dificultad un camino que sería un paseo si sólo tuvieses tennis?

Camisa liviana de manga larga. Como Culebra es una isla árida, mucha de la vegetación en los caminos es espinosa. La camisa protegerá tus brazos.

Viaja l iv iano Éstas son caminatas cortas, por lo cual es mejor empacar sólo lo necesario. Usa esta lista.

Seguridad personalNunca te alejes del camino. Está ahí con razón. Probablemente, es la mejor manera de llegar a tu destino.

Nunca vayas solo. Siempre lleva a un amigo. Él te puede ayudar o buscar ayuda si pasara algo inoportuno.

Deja dicho que vas de caminata. Déjale saber a un amigo a dónde y con quién irás por si acaso algo pasara en el camino.

What To Do... Actitud – La actitud correcta te llevará tan lejos como lo mencionadas anteriormente. Recuerda divertirte, ser precavido y disfrutar cada momento de tu caminata.

Although small geographically, Culebra is full of activities you can do during your visit. One of them is hiking. These short hikes in Culebra will take you to quiet beaches where you can snorkel (Carlos Rosario Beach) or surf (Brava Beach) or to the lighthouse in Culebrita. Here are some tips to make your hiking trip memorable and especially, safe.

Dress for the tr ipBring (or wear) your swimsuit. Chances are you’ll be hiking from or to the beach.

Wear tennis shoes. While some of the trails can be done on flip flops, do you really want to have a hard time on a trail that would be a breeze if you just wore tennis shoes?

Light long sleeved shirt. Since Culebra is an arid island, most of the brushes along the trails are prickly. Wear a shirt to protect your arms.

Pack Light These are short hikes so just pack enough stuff to be prepared for anything. Here’s your checklist:

Personal SafetyNever leave the trail. It’s there for a reason. It’s probably the best way to get to your destination.

Attitude The right attitude will get you as far as most of the things listed above. Remember to have fun, to be safe and enjoy every moment on your hike.

What To Eat... by Joa Tous

Imagine having breakfast overlooking a magnificent view at your hilltop home in Culebra, eating a quesito (Puerto Rican cheese puff pastry) and thinking, “this would

go great stuffed with shrimp!” What if you were eating a pionono in Luquillo and suddenly, an idea pops into your head: “I’d change the ground meat for red snapper.” This is how Chef Josemaría López from Club Seaborne thinks. But living in Culebra, who wouldn’t get inspired? This is what we thought once the En Culebra Magazine Staff sat down to eat at Club Seabourne’s Restaurant when looking at a wide-ranging menu Chef López has developed for the restaurant. Around ten appetizers, including the amazing shrimp in pastry shell with cilantro and mozzarella cheese (or the shrimp quesito as we call it now), which made us even want it for desert! It offers almost fifteen main courses to choose from and seven desserts (eight if you dare to repeat the shrimp quesito). Sounds about right? Well, good luck choosing your favorite from all his delectable creations.

During his extensive career in the Culinary Industry, Chef López has worked in various places. Born in the French Catalonia, he was always inspired by his mothers cooking. “I was always in the kitchen with her. By the age of 13 I was already working at a restaurant with my friend Daniel, he was in charge of the kitchen at his in-laws’ hotel”, says Chef López. This friend turns out to be renowned Daniel Vasse from Chez Daniel Restaurant at Palmas del Mar in Humacao. Motivated and hungry -for knowledge that is- he set out to work in various restaurants to master the craft. Then, after studying in Toulouse, working in the Méridien Hotel in France, at the restaurant of the Eiffel Tower, and moving to work for three years at a hotel in Saudi-Arabia, it was his friend Daniel who asked him to move to Puerto Rico to help in the opening of his restaurant in Palmas del Mar. Twenty-five years later, he’s still here.

But back to that menu… It changes twice a year, however, he develops monthly seasonal festivals, like the Red Snapper Festival, which is going on as we eat. During our dinner we’ve tasted amazing dishes, all worth mentioning. The most creative: an amazing melon colada (a refreshing frappé made with cantaloupe), the most delicious quesito on the planet (did I say this already?), a green salad with brie cheese and raspberry dressing, scallops with mango, ginger and lime mojo, a snapper filet pionono (made

with plantains) with cilantro mojo and mushroom rice, and a juicy churrasco stuffed with peppers. His style has been characterized as a nouveau-latin cuisine. “I try to create a fusion between my French cuisine but with Caribbean ingredients; coriander, tamarind, guava. Of course I’ve always had the paella in my menu, because the paella (saffron rice) is not Spanish, it’s a Catalonian plate. In the Catalan language paella means pan, which is where you make this famous dish”, explains Chef López.

Everything you read, taste, and crave is prepared here from scratch. This is not a mere culinary experience, it goes far beyond; it’s a gastronomic experience. The restaurant is keen on making your time here as fulfilling as possible with great ambiance and a vast wine selection of ten wines by the glass to choose from. “This is very important to us because that way I can prepare my dishes and you can combine different flavors without having to stick to one bottle. You can choose a wine that adapts to what you are tasting”, says Chef López, who also loves to prepare the dessert, because as he says “it’s my last impression…” and judging from the ricotta cheesecake made with homemade ricotta, indeed it was a great one.

Imagina desayunar frente a una magnífica vista en tu casa en una colina de Culebra, comiéndote un quesito (hojaldre de queso puertorriqueño) y pensar, “¡esto sería perfecto relleno de camarones!” ¿Y si te estuvieses comiendo un pionono en Luquillo y de repente se te ocurre una

idea: “Me gustaría cambiar el picadillo de carne por chillo”. Así es como piensa el Chef Josemaría López del restaurante de Club Seabourne. Pero viviendo en Culebra, ¿quién no se inspiraría?

Eso fue lo que pensamos una vez el equipo de En Culebra Magazine se sentó a comer en el Restaurante del Club Seabourne y vimos el variado menú que el Chef López ha desarrollado para el restaurante. Alrededor de diez aperitivos, incluyendo el quesito relleno de camarones con queso

mozzarella y cilantro, ¡que incluso quisimos pedir de postre! Ofrece casi quince platos principales y siete postres (ocho si te atreves a repetir el quesito de camarones). ¿Suena como lo normal? Aha, buena suerte eligiendo tu favorita de todas las creaciones deliciosas que tiene para ofrecer.

Durante su extensa carrera en la industria culinaria, el Chef López ha trabajado en varios lugares. Nacido en la Cataluña francesa, siempre se inspiró de la cocina de su madre. “Siempre estaba en la cocina con ella. Cuando cumplí los 13 años ya estaba trabajando en un restaurante con mi amigo Daniel, él estaba a cargo de la cocina del hotel de sus suegros”, cuenta Chef López. Este amigo resultó ser el reconocido Daniel Vasse de Chez Daniel,

restaurante de Palmas del Mar en Humacao. Motivado y hambriento –de conocimiento claro está– continuó a trabajar en varios restaurantes para mejorar su cocina. Y luego de estudiar en Toulouse, trabajar en el Hotel Méridien en Francia, en el restaurante de la Torre Eiffel y mudarse a Arabia Saudita para trabajar por tres años en un hotel, fue su amigo Daniel quien le pidió que se mudara a Puerto Rico para ayudarle en la apertura de su restaurante en

Palmas del Mar. Veinticinco años más tarde, aún sigue viviendo aquí.

Pero, volviendo a su menú… Cambia dos veces al año, pero el Chef desarrolla festivales mensuales de temporada, como el Festival del Chillo que está ocurriendo mientras comemos. Durante nuestra cena, hemos probado platos increíbles, todos dignos de mencionar. Los más creativos: el riquísimo melón colada (un refrescante frappé tipo piña colada, pero preparado con melón), una ensalada verde con queso brie y aderezo de frambuesa, vieras en un mojo de mango, jengibre y limón, el pionono de chillo enrollado con amarillo en un mojo de cilantro y arroz con champiñones, y el jugoso churrasco relleno de pimientos. Su estilo se ha caracterizado por ser cocina novo-latina. “Trato de crear una fusión entre mi cocina francesa, pero con ingredientes caribeños; cilantrillo, tamarindo, guayaba. Siempre he tenido paella en mi menú, porque la paella no es un plato español, es catalán. En el idioma catalán “paella” significa “sartén”, que es donde preparamos este famoso plato”, explica Chef López.

Todo lo que lees o pruebas del menú es confeccionado aquí, nada es comprado. Ésta no es meramente una experiencia culinaria, es una experiencia gastronómica. El restaurante se ha esforzado por hacer que tu tiempo aquí sea lo más gratificante posible, con un buen ambiente y una gran selección de vinos, con

una lista de diez vinos por la copa para escoger. “Ésto es bien importante para nosotros porque de esta manera puedo preparar mis platos y puedes combinar los sabores sin tener que quedarte con toda la botella. Puedes escoger un vino que se adapte al sabor que estás probando”, dice Chef López, quien también disfruta de preparar los postres, porque según él dice “es mi última impresión…” y juzgando por el cheesecake de ricota, hecho con ricota “homemade”, ciertamente es una muy buena impresión.

Culebra, nuestra isla de la fantasía, llena de azul intenso en sus playas paradisíacas y en su cielo, es el lugar que nos ha cautivado y que no podemos olvidar. Siendo habitantes del ajetreo y sobrepoblación de la Isla grande, Culebra se ha convertido en el lugar a donde podemos escaparnos para alejarnos del estrés y la contaminación de la ciudad en todos los sentidos, para buscar energías positivas que revitalizan nuestro ser. Nuestro primer viaje a Culebra fue en el 2002 para acampar con amistades de la universidad en la playa Flamenco durante la temporada de las Justas de la LAI y desde entonces es un viaje anual que repetimos todos los meses de abril para celebrar mi cumpleaños. Desde soltero a casado sin hijos, con mi esposa embarazada y ahora con mis hijos, nuestros viajes a Culebra nunca han sido interrumpidos. Hemos invitado a hermanos, padres, amistades del trabajo y vecinos en nuestros viajes a Culebra. Nos hemos quedado en hoteles y villas pero lo que más adoramos es el camping en Flamenco.

Acampar en la playa Flamenco es una experiencia única, que recomendamos a todos. El complejo, administrado por la Autoridad de Conservación y Desarrollo de Culebra, tiene un excelente mantenimiento y seguridad. Acampar a pasos de la playa en un área frondosa donde te deleitas con el sonido del mar y las aves es sentirse feliz y en armonía con la naturaleza; es completamente relajante. Nuestras experiencias con el camping han ido evolucionando desde ir con una caseta de dos personas, un sleeping bag y dos carritos de carga en el viaje de la lancha de pasajeros, hasta llevar nuestro vehículo y una caseta de diez personas, con caseta de baño y cama inflable elevada.

El paisaje de la playa, su arena blanca, el agua cristalina, las gaviotas, los corales, los peces tropicales, los cangrejos, el cielo estrellado que allí se puede disfrutar y todo lo que encontramos en Flamenco son de inspiración para mí. Plasmo esas cosas en fotografías y vídeos cada vez que vamos. Cada año la experiencia es distinta pero memorable, como por ejemplo este año nos fuimos a la playa en la noche para observar allí la salida de la Luna en su mayor tamaño. Su destello plateado en el agua era la imagen de una obra de arte. Y para el próximo año, observar el desove de tinglares está en nuestra agenda.

El camping y el viaje a Culebra es nuestra tradición familiar. Nuestros hijos de cinco y tres años hablan de Culebra, lo recuerdan y lo añoran. Las

a sleeping bag and two carts loaded on the passenger ferry, to traveling with our car and a tent for ten people, an elevated inflatable mattress and even a bathroom tent.

The landscape of the beach, its white sand, crystal clear water, seagulls, coral, tropical fish, crabs, the starry sky and everything we find in Flamenco are an inspiration to me. I capture those things in pictures and videos every time we go. Every year is a different but memorable experience, for example this year we went to the beach at night to gaze at the moon at its largest. Its flash of silver on the water was the image of a work of art. Next year, watching the nesting of leatherback turtles is on our agenda.

A camping trip to Culebra has become our family tradition. Our children of five and three years speak of Culebra, they remember and miss it. The images of such paradise cover the walls of our home and are part of my video blog on my YouTube channel “josemariel” and “piccolomondopr”. We hope that these experiences of camping with our children will shape better human beings, nature lovers, and conscious of its conservation. We hope that Culebra is preserved as this peaceful and beautiful paradise where pollution has no space, and where blue splendor remains unlikely ever to become gray.

Camping in Culebra, a family tradition

Culebra, our fantasy island, its beaches and sky filled with intense blues have captivated and are now unforgettable to us. Being part of the rush and overpopulation of the “big Island”, Culebra has become the place where we can escape from the stress and the contamination of the city in all its variations; to look for positive energy that revitalizes our souls.

Our first trip to Culebra was in 2002. We went camping to Flamenco Beach with friends from college during the “Justas” (the annual inter-university sports tournament) and has since become an annual trip I make every month of April to celebrate my birthday. From being single to married without children, then with my pregnant wife and now, with my children, our travels to Culebra have been uninterrupted. We’ve invited siblings, parents, friends from work and neighbors to our trips to Culebra and have stayed in hotels and villas, but what we love most is camping in Flamenco.

Camping in Flamenco Beach is a unique experience we recommend to all. The campground, managed by ACDEC (Conservation and Development Authority of Culebra), has excellent maintenance and safety. Camping just steps away from the beach in a lush area where you are enthralled by the sounds of the sea and the birds, means being happy and in harmony with nature; it’s completely relaxing. Our camping experiences have evolved from being in a two-person tent,

Culebrita is a small island off the East coast of Culebra. It is part of the Nature Reserve of Culebra and is home to one

of the oldest lighthouses in the Caribbean. As a small island, measuring approximately one mile in length, it boasts six different beaches and tidal pools. Accessible only by boat, Culebrita is a small step away from deserted beach paradise.

The main beach in Culebrita is Tortuga Beach or Turtle Beach. As you may have guessed, the name comes from the large number of turtles (hawksbill and leatherback) who visit the island either for nesting or feeding purposes. Tortuga Beach is a horseshoe of white powder-like sand and crystal clear waters. It is a great beach for swimming and amateur snorkeling. The best snorkeling in Culebrita is done on the East and South beaches of the island. Still, you could bump into a hawksbill turtle while snorkeling in Tortuga Beach. We did! Just look our cover.

You might think that once you get to Tortuga Beach, lie on the beach and swim in its pristine waters, you’re adventure is done. Guess again! From Tortuga you have very different hiking options. There are trails that lead you either to the East to Trash Beach, the West to West Beach, the North to the tidal pools, or the South to the lighthouse. I recommend the shortest and the longest hikes. The shortest hike is to the tidal pools. If you hike North of Tortuga Beach for about 10 minutes, you will find yourselves in Culebrita’s tidal pools or the Jacuzzis. These natural pools are kept warm by the Caribbean weather and almost demand that you sit and relax in them. If you’re planning to walk to the tidal pools, don’t leave behind your shoes. Part of the hike involves navigating through some unforgiving rocks.

The longest hike from Tortuga is to the lighthouse. Completed in 1886, it was one of the oldest operating lighthouses in

the Caribbean until it was closed in 1959. Although the hike is long, you will experience some of Culebrita’s wildlife. You will see birds and different species of cacti. Once you get to the lighthouse itself, you will enjoy views of Culebra, St. Thomas and Cayo Norte, not to mention the views of Culebrita’s own beaches. For this hike, please remember to bring water and a light snack. Don’t forget your camera and please, don’t take souvenirs from this historic building.

When traveling to Tortuga Beach, remember the following tips. Tortuga is a beach on Culebrita island. There are no amenities to speak of so bring all you need for day of fun in the sun, swimming and hiking. Plan ahead either for a water taxi or a Culebrita island tour guide. Reservations are definitely suggested. Remember that Culebrita is part of the Natural Reserve so tread lightly on the hiking paths and mind the corals while snorkeling. Most

importantly, be ready to have fun in this little piece of paradise.

Culebrita es una pequeña isla en la costa Este de Culebra. Es parte de la Reserva Natural de Culebra y es el hogar de uno de los más antiguos faros en el Caribe. Aún siendo una pequeña isla, de aproximadamente una milla de longitud, cuenta con seis playas y piscinas naturales o jacuzzis. Accesible solamente por bote, Culebrita está a un pequeño paso de ser un paraíso de playa desierta.

La playa principal de Culebrita es Playa Tortuga. Como puedes haber adivinado, el nombre proviene de la gran cantidad de tortugas (carey y tinglar) que visitan la isla ya sea para fines de anidación o alimentación.

Playa Tortuga es una herradura de arena blanca y aguas cristalinas. Es una gran playa para nadar y para aficionados del buceo. El mejor snorkeling en Culebrita se hace en las playas del Este y el Sur de la isla. Sin embargo, te podrías topar con una tortuga carey mientras nadas en Playa Tortuga. ¡A nosotros nos pasó! Podrías pensar que una vez llegas a Playa Tortuga, te recuestas en su arena y nadas en sus aguas cristalinas, la aventura se acabó. ¡Ni lo pienses! Desde Tortuga tienes opciones muy distintas para hacer hiking. Hay caminos que conducen ya sea hacia el Este a Playa Basura, al Oeste a West Beach, al Norte a los jacuzzis, o al Sur hasta el faro. Recomiendo la caminata más corta y la más larga. La caminata más corta es hacia los jacuzzis. Si caminas hacia el Norte de Playa Tortuga por unos 10 minutos, encontrarás los jacuzzis. Estas piscinas naturales se mantienen calientes por el clima del Caribe y casi te obligan a sentarte y relajarte en ellas. Si decides visitar los jacuzzis, no dejes tus zapatos. Parte de

la caminata consiste en navegar a través de rocas inestables.

La caminata más larga es desde Tortuga hasta el faro. Completado en 1886, fue uno de los faros más antiguos operando en el Caribe hasta que fue cerrado en 1959. Aunque la caminata es larga, podrás experimentar algo de la vida silvestre de Culebrita. Podrás ver aves y diferentes especies de cactus. Una vez en el faro, podrás disfrutar de vistas de Culebra, St. Thomas y Cayo Norte, aparte de las propias playas de Culebrita. Para esta caminata, no olvides traer agua y un snack liviano. No olvides tu cámara, y por favor, no te lleves de recuerdo pedazos de este edificio histórico.

Cuando viajes a Playa Tortuga, recuerda lo siguiente. Tortuga es una playa en la isla de Culebrita. No hay amenidades así que trae todo lo que necesitas para un día de aventuras, sol, agua y hiking. Planifica con anticipación, ya sea para un taxi acuático o un guía de isla Culebrita. Te recomiendo que hagas tus reservaciones con tiempo. WikiSoundCada fin de semana en Culebra suenan los sonidos

de 5 congas que retumban en el pueblo. Son las manos de Julio Enrique Munet Solís -cariñosamente

conocido como Wiki- junto a su hermano Rubén Munet Solís y amigo Jorge Acevedo, los tres componen el talentoso trío Wiki Sound.

Por los pasados 14 años, la Wiki Sound se ha convertido en un espectáculo musical que los turistas de Culebra no se pueden perder. Todo comenzó en el verano del 1996, cuando Jorge Acevedo, artista plástico y percusionista, decidió viajar a Culebra y como todo visitante, fue a buscar música en vivo por la isla. Es ahí donde se encuentra con la agrupación Culebra Tropical Swing al cual Wiki y sus hermanos pertenecían. Criados bajo los sonidos del Calipso, Wiki y Rubén han sido parte del legado musical de Culebra. De un total de 9 hermanos, todos músicos, son la tercera generación de culebrenses que encarnan el sabor rítmico de la isla, comenzado por su abuelo Cucuíto, considerado padre del folklor musical de Culebra.

“No me esperaba encontrar esa experiencia musical. Yo estaba buscando musicalmente otra cosa pero me encontré con el calipso por sorpresa, me llamó la atención como fonéticamente se canta en inglés pero el canto es también ritmo. La voz es otro instrumento. Es una confusión de lenguaje isleño”, explica Acevedo quien tomó la iniciativa de unirse a ellos en esa ocasión y fue ahí donde comenzó la amistad que hoy los une.

Aunque no era formalmente un espectáculo musical, Wiki y Rubén ya daban de qué hablar en Mamacita’s. Rubén era el DJ y Wiki trabajaba como “dish washer”. La estación de lavado de platos se encontraba justo detrás de Rubén con su equipo de DJ y desde ahí se podía escuchar como Wiki tocaba todas las ollas desde su estación, al ritmo de la música que su hermano ponía. Luego de varios juntes,

Wiki, Jorge y Rubén decidieron presentar sus talentos acompañados por una caja de ritmos (Rhythm Box) al cual le añadían los toques de las congas. “Gracias a Dios un amigo nos hizo el favor de desenchufar la caja esa”, recuerda Jorge mientras Rubén se ríe y también agradece.

La Wiki Sound se ha influenciado de los ritmos cotidianos de Puerto Rico, pero su tendencia más fuerte gira en torno a los ritmos de las Islas Vírgenes. “Culebra siempre ha sido la frontera entre el Caribe latino (merengue, salsa, bachata) y el resto del Caribe. en ese sentido”, nos comentan los músicos. Su repertorio musical se compone de distintos ritmos del Caribe como el calipso, el zouk, el soca, el guaguancó, la bomba, la plena, la salsa y hasta

la samba brasilera. Además presentan su sonido único al cual le han titulado “Give me one” que es una especie de merengue “calipsiado”.

Son muchos los que siguen a la Wiki Sound por los pasados años. Inclusive varios artistas se les han unido en sus presentaciones, uno de los más importantes para ellos fue la presencia de José “Mañengue” Hidalgo, quien los adentro un poco más a la rumba y al soneo.

Aunque han tocado en Palomino y en otras áreas de Puerto Rico, desean dejar su música en Culebra. “No es lo mismo si no es aquí, es parte de una experiencia que sólo se vive acá. Queremos que los que nos visitan se lleven una rumba que sea memorable. Que siempre se lleven algo bonito de nosotros, una amistad, un buen trato, una expresión

que no se puede comparar. Es un sabor bien único rodeado de un mar tan claro. La gente se va contenta pues se llevan lo diferente. Culebra tiene su propio “swing”. Por eso es que vienen...”

The rhythm and color of the Wiki Sound.

Every weekend in Culebra the sounds of 5 congas surround the town. It comes from the hands of Julio Enrique Munet Solís –also known as Wiki- with his brother Rubén Munet Solís and friend Jorge Acevedo, the three make up the talented trio Wiki Sound.

For the past 14 years, Wiki Sound has become the must-see musical show that Culebra tourists cannot miss. It all started during the summer of 1996, when Jorge Acevedo, an artist and percussionist, decided to travel to Culebra and like any visitor, went out looking for live music. That’s when he encountered the Culebra Tropical Swing where Wiki and his brothers played. Brought up around calypso sounds, Wiki and Rubén have been part of the musical legacy of Culebra. Of 9 siblings, all musicians, they are a third generation of culebrenses responsible for the rhythmic flavor of the island, starting with their grandfather Cucuíto, considered the father of the musical folklore in Culebra.

“I wasn’t expecting this musical experience. I was looking for something else musically, but I found calypso by surprise, and I found

very interesting how they sung phonetically in English, but the singing was also a rhythm, the voice used as an instrument. It’s a confusion of the island language”, explains Acevedo who took the initiative of playing with them that night, the beginning of a friendship that unites them still today.

Although they were not formally a musical group, there was already a buzz surrounding Wiki and Rubén in Mamacita’s. Rubén was the DJ and Wiki worked as a dish washer. The dishwashing station was just behind Rubén and his DJ equipment, and from there you could hear Wiki playing the pots and pans to the rhythm of what his brother played. After a couple of jams Wiki, Jorge and Rubén decided to present their talents accompanied by a Rhythm Box, playing over the music with their congas. “Thank God a friend did us the favor of unplugging that box”, remembers Jorge, while Rubén laughs and thanks him also.

The Wiki Sound has been influenced by local Puerto Rican rhythms, but its biggest influence comes from the Virgin Islands. “Culebra has always been the border between the Latin Caribbean (merengue, salsa, bachata) and the rest of the Caribbean. Culebra’s music moves more towards the Virgin Islands”, the musicians say. Their musical repertoire is composed of

different rhythms from the Caribbean from calypso, zouk, soca, guaguancó, Puerto Rican bomba and plena, salsa and even Brazilian samba. Also, they present their unique sound they have named “Give me one” which sounds like a mixture of merengue and calypso.

Many have followed the Wiki Sound for the past years. Many artists have collaborated with them in their presentations, one of the most important being the presence of famous percussionist José “Mañengue” Hidalgo, who introduced them to the rumba and the soneo.

Although they have played in Palomino and other areas of Puerto Rico, they wish to keep their music in Culebra. “Its not the same if were not here, it is part of an experience that you can only have here. We want the people who visit us to take home a party that will be memorable. That they always leave with something beautiful from us, a friendship, a great time, it’s an expression you cannot compare with anywhere else. It’s a very unique flavor surrounded by clear blue waters. People leave happy because they take home something different. Culebra has its own swing. That’s why they come.”

Si tienes la oportunidad de viajar a Culebrita, eres fanático del hiking y te gusta la historia, esta aventura es para ti. En la cima del punto más alto del archipiélago culebrense, puedes observar el Faro de Culebrita. Hay varios caminos que llevan a este tesoro histórico, por la Playa Tortuga, por West Beach o por el sur de Culebrita. No importa cuál camino escojas, recuerda que ninguno está pavimentado y están a la merced de la naturaleza que le crece a su alrededor así que llega preparado. Aún así, es una caminata que no te puedes perder. Aquí, un poquito de su historia.

Construido por la corona española en 1882, estableció su dominio sobre el archipiélago culebrense. Por primera vez, el faro iluminó el camino hacia el paraíso natural que hoy conocemos el 25 de febrero del 1886. Estuvo atendido por dos torreros que vivían en él junto a sus familias. En 1959, la Guardia Costanera clausuró el faro y fue utilizado como punto de observación por la marina de Estados Unidos hasta su salida de Culebra en 1975.

El Faro no es sólo invaluable en términos históricos, sino su arquitectura es única en Puerto Rico. El Faro de Culebrita es el único diseñado y construido en forma de “E”. Sus pisos están compuestos de lozas de mármol blanco y negro, trabajados y pulidos a mano. La escalera en espiral que lleva al lente muestra las cicatrices del tiempo y el clima.

En 1981, personal de la guardia costanera reparó el faro y el mismo año fue designado monumento histórico de los EE.UU. Treinta años más tarde, el azote de varios huracanes y el lamentable acto de vandalismo de algunos visitantes han deteriorado grandemente la estructura.

Esperamos que disfrutes tu aventura en el Faro de Culebrita. Te recordamos que, aunque es un monumento histórico, no está administrado actualmente por lo que no tiene facilidades ni amenidades turísticas. Además, te invitamos a que disfrutes el Faro de Culebrita respetando su importancia en la historia de Culebra y Puerto Rico.

If you have the opportunity to travel to Culebrita, you’re a fan of hiking and history, this adventure is for you. On top of the highest point of the Culebra Archipelago, you can see the lighthouse of Culebrita. There are several trails leading to this historic treasure, from Tortuga Beach, West Beach or South of Culebrita. No matter which path you choose, remember that none are paved and are at the mercy of the vegetation that grows around it so be prepared. Still, it’s a hike that you cannot miss. A little history of the lighthouse…

Built by the Spanish crown in 1882, it established its dominance over the islands of Culebra. In February 25, 1886, for the first time, this lighthouse lit the course to the natural paradise we know today. It was tended-to by two keepers who lived there with their families. In 1959, the Coast Guard closed the lighthouse giving way to it being used as an observation point by the United States Navy until their departure from Culebra in 1975.

The lighthouse is not only invaluable historically, but its architecture is unique in Puerto Rico.

The Culebrita Lighthouse is the only one designed and built in an “E “ shape. Its floors are composed of slabs of white and black marble, wrought and polished by hand. The spiral staircase leading to the lens are marked the scars of time and weather.

In 1981, Coast Guard personnel repaired the lighthouse and it was designated a historic monument of the United States. Thirty years later, the damage of several incoming hurricanes and the unfortunate acts of vandalism by visitors, have greatly deteriorated the structure.

We hope you enjoy your adventure at the Culebrita Lighthouse. Please remember that, although it is a historical monument, it is currently un-administered so it has no tourist facilities and amenities. We also invite you to enjoy the Culebrita Lighthouse respecting its importance in the history of Culebra and Puerto Rico.
