Era dijous, estaven
a finals de març i la
primavera arrencava
amb esplendor. En
Joan assajava amb
el seu grup de teatre
quan la Laura va entrar
precipitadament a la
sala d’actes de l’escola.
De tant de pressa que
anava no va veure l’Iñaki,
un company de teatre
d’en Joan que s’estava
canviant de vestuari; el
va desequilibrar i el va fer
caure tant llarg com era
estès a terra.
Feia goig de veure’l,
amb els pantalons a
mig posar i amb cara de
no entendre què havia
passat!
4
It was a Thursday towards the end of March and spring was in full bloom.Joan was rehearsing with his drama group when Laura came rushing into the school hall. She was in such a hurry that she did not see Iñaki, one of Joan’s drama friends, who was getting changed. She knocked him off balance and made him fall flat out on the ground. He was a real sight to behold with his trousers half on and a perplexed look on his face.
6 7
While the drama teacher, Iker, was busy helping Iñaki to his feet, Laura and Joan had already made their way outside, since, seeing Laura coming in such a hurry, Joan had realised that there must be a new adventure waiting for them. ‘Quick, Joan, we have to get the bus to Castelldefels. Someone from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) has called us because they need our help with some research.‘And what is it that we have to do?’‘To tell you the truth, I didn’t really understand it,’ confessed Laura. ‘Paula, the director of the ICFO, explained it to me, but it was really hard to understand without our magic powers.’
l’autobús cap a Castelldefels. Ens
han trucat de l’Institut de Ciències
Fotòniques (ICFO) perquè necessiten la
nostra ajuda en una recerca.
—I què haurem de fer?
98
‘Don’t worry, Laura, we can solve that problem in no time!’, exclaimed Joan, as they held hands and repeated their magic words four times.‘Combine our forces!’Now they were ready to use their magic powers to help out with the research.
—No t’amoïnis, Laura, això ho
solucionem en un tres i no res!
—va exclamar en Joan, mentre
es donaven les mans i repetien
quatre vegades la seva frase
màgica.
—Unim les nostres energies!
Ja podien fer servir els poders
màgics per ajudar en la
recerca.
10 11
‘By the way, Iker had a really impressive role reserved for you there, didn’t he? Nothing less than an oak tree! Absolutely vital for the dramatic finale!’, joked Laura.‘You won’t believe it, but it’s a role that needs a lot of personality. What’s more, the play is really important, didn’t you know that it’s called Adventures in Oak Tree Town?’, said Joan, carrying on the joke.‘Ah, I see, so actually you’ve got more or less the leading role,’ continued Laura, as they both burst out laughing, so loud that everyone turned to look at them. They made the most of the journey to do some reading up: while Laura scoured a book on photonics, Joan concentrated on the life of plants.
13
The journey was not too long and they arrived in no time at all.‘What have you discovered about photonics then?’‘That it’s a scientific discipline that tries to use light photons for lots of things, such as medicine, physics and engineering. Photons are the particles that make up light, which is to say that the light we see is made up of lots of photons together.’ ‘It’ a bit like water, isn’t it? I mean, if lots of drops of water make up a river, then the photons would be like the droplets and the river would be the light beam. Do you see what I mean?’‘I couldn’t have explained it better myself, Joan!’, praised Laura, pretending to be a real know-it-all.
12
El trajecte no era gaire llarg i
van arribar de seguida.
—Què has descobert de la
fotònica?
—Doncs que és una
disciplina científica que
tracta d’aprofitar els fotons
de la llum per a moltes
coses, com la medicina,
la física o l’enginyeria. Els
oi?
—Ni jo no ho hauria explicat
millor, Joan! —el va lloar la
Laura fent-se la setciències.
14 15
Once at the ICFO, they went straight to the director’s office to find out what kind of photonic research they were to help out with. ‘How great that you’ve been able to come and help us out.’‘The pleasure’s all ours. It’s not every day that we get the chance to help out with photonics research,’ said Joan gratefully.‘Great! Let’s get straight to work then! We need you to help us improve solar panels. We want to see if we can be as clever as plants. If we manage to be as efficient as carotenoids, our planet will thank us for it.’‘Actually, Paula, I don’t really understand the relation between solar panels that absorb solar energy and use it for electricity and this caroteno-thingy that you’re talking about.’‘Carotenoids, Laura,’ explained Joan, seeing that she was making a bit of a mess of things, ‘are the light-absorbing molecules of plants like carrots or tomatoes.’
17
‘Exactly, Joan,’ said Paula. ‘Carotene is the light-harvesting molecule whose job it is to absorb sunlight so that the plants can carry out photosynthesis.’‘Ah! Now I understand. We need to understand how to make use of solar energy as well as plants do to stop polluting the Earth.’‘Exactly! Well done, kids! I can see that your help is going to be really valuable to us. And now my secretary, Miquel, will take you to introduce you to the rest of the team.’‘Joan, we’ve only got two days to help out with this research. We’ll come back another day to go canoeing,’ Laura said to him reproachfully, seeing that he had gone into a world of his own staring at the Olympic canal.
16
—Efectivament, Joan —
va assenyalar la Paula—.
El carotè és la molècula
antena encarregada de
xuclar la llum del sol perquè
aquestes plantes puguin fer la
fotosíntesi.
—Ah! Ara ho entenc, hauríem
de saber aprofitar l’energia
solar tan bé com ho fan les
plantes per no contaminar la
Terra.
—Molt bé, nanos! Veig que
la vostra col·laboració ens
serà molt valuosa. Ara el
meu secretari, en Miquel, us
acompanyarà per presentar-
vos la resta de l’equip.
—Joan, que només tenim
dos dies per col·laborar en la
recerca. Ja vindrem un altre
dia a practicar piragüisme —li
va recriminar la Laura, veient
que s’havia quedat encantat
mirant el canal olímpic.
18 19
Miquel took them to one of the ICFO laboratories, where Marc, Luat, Mercè and Jordi—an engineer, physicist, chemist and physicist at the ICFO, respectively—were already working. Each person on the team brought their own specialised knowledge with them to advance photonics research. As was only to be expected, they were delighted to welcome Laura and Joan onto the team.‘Come in, please, we’ll update you on our research. As you already know, we human beings don’t know enough yet about using solar energy to its full potential…’‘I read that we only use 0.1% of the solar energy that reaches Earth. Is that right?’‘Yes it is, Laura. There’s still a lot of research to be done, but it will be well worth it. Just imagine: the sunlight that reaches Earth in one hour is enough to supply the energy consumption made by all the people on the plant over a whole year!’
En Miquel els acompanyà a un dels
laboratoris de l’ICFO, on ja estaven
Com
era d’esperar, van rebre amb gran joia
persones encara no sabem aprofitar prou
21
‘Incredible!’, exclaimed Laura and Joan in unison, amazed by the importance of this research. ‘Let’s hope that one day we manage to be as efficient as plants!’‘Remember that they’ve got a few million years’ advantage over us though,’ joked Jordi.‘What do you mean?’‘I mean that plants have evolved over millions of years until becoming as efficient as they are now. Whereas we’ve not been researching for very long and we’ve still got a long way to go.’‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we became as wise as plants and managed to produce energy without polluting?’‘Absolutely. Plants are really interesting; they’re clean, efficient… and what’s more, when they carry out photosynthesis, they release oxygen, which keeps us alive. I love plants. I promise to respect them always,’ declared Joan.‘You just needed to add “the oak tree hereby gives his word” there, Joan!’, added Laura. And with this, both children burst out laughing, much to the surprise of the rest of the research team.
20
—I tant! —van exclamar a l’uníson la Laura
i en Joan, admirats de la importància
d’aquella recerca. Tant de bo algun dia
aconseguim ser tan eficients com les
plantes!
puguem tenir energia sense contaminar.
—Si és que les plantes són molt
interessants, són netes, eficients..., i a sobre
quan fan la fotosíntesi desprenen oxigen
perquè nosaltres puguem viure. M’encanten,
prometo respectar-les sempre —va declarar
en Joan.
—Et faltaria dir «paraula de roure», no? —li
investigador.
22 23
All day Friday, Laura and Joan researched frenetically. Even though they knew that the goal of the research they were helping out with was a long way off, they were very excited by the importance of it. ‘How much sunlight do the solar panels sold nowadays actually use?’‘Unfortunately, only about 15%.’‘The key is improving the solar panels’ ability to absorb light. We’ve still got a long way to go to be able to use all the light that reaches Earth.’‘What’s more, to be able to use 15%, we have to spend an awful lot of money.’‘What do you mean, Luat? I thought solar energy was really cheap…’‘It is if we consider that we don’t have to pay for sunlight. But right now solar panels are pretty expensive to manufacture and even special clean rooms are needed to make them.’
a mil.
—Quanta llum del sol aprofiten les
plaques solars que es venen ara?
—Malauradament només el 15%,
aproximadament.
—La clau és a millorar l’absorció
de la llum que fan les plaques
solars. Encara ens falta molt perquè
puguem aprofitar tota la llum que
els arriba.
—A més, per aconseguir fer-ne
servir el 15% hem de gastar-nos
molts cèntims.
—Què vols dir, Luat? Jo em
pensava que l’energia solar era
molt barata...
25
Laura and Joan got to work painting the solar panels that were made at the ICFO to be able to test how much light they absorbed. They had never painted like this before: they placed the panels inside a machine, and then an artificial colourant designed to absorb light was then evaporated little by little, leaving a deposit on the panel. ‘I want to paint it green,’ pleaded Joan euphorically. ‘Goodness me, Joan, you truly love plants, don’t you? I bet you want green because it’s the most common colour of all vegetables.’‘Elementary, my dear Watson! And with you being so clever and all… Do you know why most plants are green?’‘Why?’‘Because their light-harvesting molecule is chlorophyll and, as you know very well, the colours that we see are those that the plant doesn’t absorb,’ explained Joan, pretending to be very wise.‘So actually, plants don’t like the colour green.’‘If you think of it that way, then you could say that’s true, because most of them cannot absorb it,’ agreed Mercè, smiling.
24
absorbien. Mai no havien pintat d’aquesta

Friday flew by in a flash and they still had lots to do… Moreover, the weekend was fast approaching and they would have to say goodbye to the team very soon. After lunch, the photonics research team analysed whether the new solar panels that they had built would be ready to test the next day.‘Wow, this mini panel is really soft!’‘That’s how we imitate the flexibility of the leaves found on trees.’‘And this way it’s easier to place them in any location, isn’t it?’‘Exactly. Rigid panels are not as easy to install.’‘But it’s really late now. Tomorrow’s Saturday and we’ll be able to do tests to see how it absorbs sunlight.’

The next day, slightly anxious because of the cloudy sky, Laura and Joan went to the ICFO to use the few hours of magic powers remaining and to help out with the research. Being a Saturday, the centre was fairly quiet. Only Marc and Luat were there from the team.‘I’m worried, Luat. It’s fairly cloudy today. Does that mean we won’t be able to test our panel?’‘Don’t worry, Joan. We have a bit of a trick for cases like these: we use a sunlight simulator.’
—Ja t’ho deia jo, Joan, que havia d’haver-hi truc, sinó quan plou i fa núvol s’haurien d’aturar
totes les recerques que
necessitin llum solar.
—Però ara que hi penso,
com s’ho fan les plantes
a la nit per viure? Amb
la foscor no poden fer la
fotosíntesi, oi?
—T’ha agafat fort amb
les plantes, eh, Joan? Els
passa com a les persones,
vosaltres necessiteu
menjar bé per créixer i
que el cos us funcioni
correctament, però no
mengeu a totes hores.
Per tant, les plantes
emmagatzemen l’energia
per funcionar els dies
núvols o quan és de nit.
‘I told you, Joan, that there must be some sort of trick; if not, all research that needs sunlight would have to stop whenever it rains or is cloudy.’‘But come to think of it, how do plants live at night? They can’t carry out photosynthesis in the dark, can they?’‘You’re really into plants now, aren’t you, Joan? They work like people. We need to eat to grow and for our body to work properly. But we don’t eat all the time, do we? So, plants store their energy to use it on cloudy days or at night.’
30 31
Abans de tenir els resultats
va arribar la Mercè, que no
podia esperar fins dilluns per
conèixer-los!
Quan van mesurar l’eficiència
del colorant, el resultat va ser
baix, només aprofitava el 3%
de l’energia que rebia, però
l’equip de recerca no es va
enfonsar, ja que sabien que
era un procés de recerca llarg
i difícil però que l’esforç valia
molt la pena.
Això sí, de moment la Laura i
en Joan s’havien d’acomiadar
de la recerca per qui sap
si tornar-hi en algun altre
moment de la seva vida...
Unable to wait until Monday, Mercè arrived just before the results came in.When they measured the efficiency of the colourant, the result was low, with only 3% of the energy received being used. But the research team were not put off, as they knew very well that this would be a long and difficult research process and that their efforts would be worth it.It was now time, though, for Laura and Joan to say goodbye to the research until maybe returning to it at some point later in their lives.

—Ostres, Joan, quin greu que em
sap no poder continuar col·laborant
en aquesta recerca de fotònica.
—Ja ho pots ben dir, hem
d’aprendre tant dels éssers vius del
planeta!
tecnologia i aconseguir grans reptes.
—De totes maneres, perquè t’agradi
la fotònica només cal que t’interessi
la llum i qualsevol altra cosa, perquè
realment la llum serveix per a tot.
Què, Joan, anem a practicar una
mica de piragüisme?
—Qui arribi primer tria piragua! —va
exclamar en Joan mentre arrencava
a córrer.
‘You know what, Joan? I feel really bad that I can’t carry on with this photonics research.’‘I know exactly what you mean. We’ve got so much to learn from the living things on our planet! But you could always go into photonics research when you’re older.’ ‘I’ll think about that very seriously. But I’ll tell you what... I’ll bet Clàudia and Morgan from our class wouldn’t hesitate. When we tell them about the research, I’m sure they’ll want to study photonics when they’re older.’‘Definitely! What with how they love technology and big challenges and all.’‘Actually, to like photonics you only need to be interested in light and any old thing, because really light is used for everything. Well, Joan, shall we go and do some canoeing now?’‘The first one there gets to choose the canoe!’, exclaimed Joan, as he set off running.
