Roles of the private and public sectors
Locally-developed solutionsMost of the selected case studies for the Mediterranean have been developed at the local level (case studies 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15) both when it comes to implementing new methodologies, and when the objective is to recover traditional nature-based practices and sustainably manage their resources. In some it is observed that the recovery of traditional uses is the most appropriate solution and the one most easily accepted by the community. This is the case for Matrouh in Egypt (case study 5) or the Zarqa River Basin in Jordan (case study 4), which have also received the support of the governments. In other cases, the solution may be a local and private initiative, without external funding or public support, as was the case in Portugal with the biological pools (case study 15), offering a replication, expansion and also business model, valid at the local level, but that also can be extrapolated to broader levels.
