Years ago I met and fell in love with the work of
Pablo Atchugarry.
Pablo made a name for himself, while still young,
as a plastic artist, known for the creation of his own
line of marble sculptures, so light and delicate that
they appeared to be sculpted from paper.
Te new frontier of the world of sculptures, in
general terms, is a far cry from the difficult work
of hard stone sculpture. Without multiple parts,
carving single pieces, in the ancient manner of clas-
sic Greek art; admirable and pure works of art, likethose of the classic legacy.
Te admirable harmony, which enraptures us
as we face his sculptures, enhances the value of our
environment. Tey adorn the surroundings where
they are exhibited, with beauty and perfection,
bringing nostalgia of when the sculptor had time to
perpetrate his art in stone.
Pablo takes the rough stone from a piece of the
mountain and gives back to the world a piece of na-
ture perfected as few contemporary ones are. Withgreat sensitivity in its lines, which gently elevate us
up into the heavens, he produces voids in the mar-
ble, elegantly lending form to the outlines, which
are accomplished to remain for eternity.
oday, Pablo has achieved his deserved position
as one of the principal sculptors of the world.
He was born in Uruguay, a small country, but
which has given the world many talents, far beyond
its size. Spread throughout Uruguay, in public plac-
es, we see his art in high relief, forged in stone, metal
and cement, created since the 1970s.
From there to the world, treading a path of ardu-
ous work, he conquered recognition, first in Italy,
and later spreading through Europe and the world.
My admiration for Pablo and his wife Silvana
transcends his art. With their personal resources, this
couple erected a spacious cultural centre at Puntadel Este, a legacy for their country and humanity.
Te park displays sculptures of many international
artists and the museum also offers exhibitions for
renowned artists as well as emerging new talent.
Apart from being a sculptor Pablo Atchugarry is also
a great patron of the arts.
Te MuBE is proud to have the opportunity to
show this one, the most important exhibition of his
life, so close to his motherland.

pir em pedra dura. Sem mltiplos, talhando peas nicas, nos moldes da antiga arte clssica grega;
a humanidade.
a sua terra me.

Since its creation in 1999, the IVB Victor
Brecheret Institute has contributed to the diffusion
of art in Brazil by means of activities that link up
different artistic contexts and their multiple agents,
within and outside the country. Research, publica-
tions, exhibitions and institutional exchanges are
among the main actions undertaken in the course
this trajectory, as the Institute seeks to to keep up
with the enterprising spirit and the cosmopolitan
sensitivity of the artist Brecheret himself, whose
oeuvre, at once monumental and modern, persists
as a valuable example to the new generations.
Imbued with this open spirit of greatness be-
fore the world and art, the IVB offers a space for
the development of projects and actions, providing
a focus for the convergence of and dialogue between
producers, artists, curators, art experts and art lov-
ers, keeping alive an emblematic stance of Brecheret
himself, in tune with our contemporary world.
Amongst the most notorious of these convergen-
ces and historical continuities, amidst the multiplic-
ity of their expressions and such vast knowledge, it
is natural for us to be more sensitive to the affini-
ties of technique, languages and experiences more
deeply linked to the sculptural work of the author
of Monumento s Bandeiras. Pablo Atchugarry is,
no doubt, a happy encounter in this scenario. After
all, how many artistic trajectories could establish so
good a dialogue?
Te opportunity to bring over to MuBE a sig-
nificant set of works by one of the greatest sculp-
tors of our time, with his monumental poetry and
his unrivalled knowledge of marble, is a motive of
pride for the IVB and we hope it will be a source
of great satisfaction for the audiences in So Paulo.

plos agentes, dentro e fora do pas. Pesquisas, publicaes, exposies e intercmbios institucionais
autor do Monumento s Bandeiras.
Afinal, quantas trajetrias artsticas poderiam dialogar to bem entre si?

e madeira-, tanto as maiores quanto as menores,
Te concrete building broken into prismatic and
divergent volumes which Paulo Mendes da Rocha
designed for the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture,
partially buried among the shade it produces as it
advances towards underground levels, below the
streets whose crossroads enclose the institution, is
illuminated with the exhibition of Pablo Atchugarry.
Tis master sculptor who, in one aspect, is different
from our sculptors: his interest in demonstrating the
fecundity of marble, his pertinence in persistently
exploring it even today, in a world whose substance
is losing its place to images. His works, which in
this exhibition, especially in the outdoor area of
the museum, also include pieces produced in metal
and wood, both large and small, project themselves
upwards as flames and trunks suddenly curtailed,
contrasting the penumbra with the materiality of
the concrete, as well as with the low ceilings of the
spacious atmospheres produced by the orthogonal
walls.
Te concrete of the walls of the MuBE, as is
current among the most notable examples of mod-
ern Brazilian architecture, carries the mark of the
wood forms. Paraphrasing the poet Joo Cabral de
Melo Neto in O ferrageiro de Carmona, the liquefiedconcrete, as the cast iron of the poem, yields eas-
ily / merely needing to be poured into the mould.

luta / s derram-lo na forma. / No h nele a
queda de brao / e o cara a cara de uma forja.
Curiosa coincidncia receber as esculturas de mes-
tre Atchugarry, grande parte delas nascida do con-
Escavar, escarificar,
cortar, gravar, talhar, cinzelar, perfurar, desgastar so
o imprevisto tom rosado do mrmore portugus. O
pelas formidveis movimentaes tectnicas provo-
hands with stone and wood, from the taming of
the material, from the conflict among hands armed
with hammers, saws and chisels. Excavate, scarify,
cut, engrave, carve, chisel, perforate, wear down,
are some of the verbs used in the artists routine, a
range which is expanded with the presence of metal
sculptures, evocative of other actions, instruments
and procedures.
Concentrating on the works in marble, for rea-
sons that will be made clear below, it is worthwhile
thinking about how the artist operates when faced
with a material heavy with the weight of tradition
and purity, whether of the characteristic white-
ness of the blocks brought back from the Carrara
mines, black as can be found in Belgium, or even
the unexpected rosy tint of Portuguese marble. Te
attack made on all these marbles is made through
the opening of cracks, breaches and fissures, a desire
for freedom from the shadows, the darkness that the
material keeps inside itself, from which whispered
rumours are grasped in the form of gentle stains
crossing the carefully polished surfaces, the closing
statement of a process which begins with violence
but gradually ends gently, involving its wearing
down by a grinder, sanding, the use of abrasives, ap-
plied with the care of caresses.
Te masters of antiquity worked on marble for
the purpose of assuring the durability of their con-
structions, objects or images, wrenched from the
interior of the matter. Teir immense variation of
densities has been, since ancient times, compre-
hended as a material of multiple uses, applied to
constructions without any further details than those
set out by the eyes, fingertips and palms of hands.
And, especially for these more finely finished works,

presso e temperatura absolutamente singulares. A
memria desses processos, comuns em rochas me-
balho artstico, claramente expresso no manifesto
grande lastro conceitual. No que se refere a essa tra-
dio, nosso contexto, por circunstncias particula-
res que no cabe comentar aqui, favoreceu o flores-
cimento de artistas ligados abstrao geomtrica,
como Amilcar de Castro e Franz Weismann, Lygia
Clark dos Bichos, entre outros. Claro est que outros
filiados a correntes expressivas, como Xico Stockin-
ger, Nicolas Vlavianos, Felcia Leirner e Abelardo da
Hora, mantiveram-se fortemente ativos embora suacontribuio no tenha sido to incisiva quanto a
what was interesting was the subtle behaviour of
the surface of the material, the myriad of irregular
designs created by nature, by the formidable tec-
tonic movements giving rise to crushing and melt-
ing, under absolutely unique conditions of pressure
and temperature. Te memory of these processes,
common in metamorphic rocks such as marble, is
expressed in the streaked and diaphanous patterns
similar to the waves disappearing at the edge of the
beach, rough lines reminiscent of rays or encepha-
logram records, the entangled scribbles of children.
Te self-assuredness and inventiveness with
which Pablo Atchugarry deals with these aspects is
impressive, whether the historic tradition of sculp-
ture, or anything else, but always highlighting mar-
ble and its internal qualities, composing a bundle of
issues which he expands, transposing it to the con-
text of wood and metal. Considering how very little
that we, the Brazilian, are accustomed to the legacy
left by marble, a new exhibition of this artist in our
country, seven years after his first and significant
show, is of an exceptional importance.
In Brazil, the entrance on stage of Concretismand
its well-known aversion to the manual character of
artistic work, clearly expressed in the Rupturemani-
fest of 1952, its extension through NeoConcretism, indeed a rather traumatic unfolding and, almost
immediately following, in the early 1960s, the in-
corporation of the object in versions more or less
aligned with Dadaism, ended up by stifling an en-
tire sculptural tradition of major conceptual foun-
dation. Regarding this tradition, our context, due to
particular circumstances that are beyond the scope
of our discussion herein, favoured the flourish-
ing of artists linked to geometric abstraction, such
as Amilcar de Castro and Franz Weismann, Lygia
Clark with her Bichos, among others. Of course, other followers of expressive currents, such as Xico
Stockinger, Nicolas Vlavianos, Felcia Leirner and
Abelardo da Hora, continued highly active although
their contribution was not as incisive as that of their
colleagues. Te point in common between almost
all of them, with the exception of Abelardo da Hora,

nial, nosso mais importante artista at meados do
sculo XX.
dra, sobretudo a pedra, sobretudo o mrmore, deeleio ancestral: fertilidade profunda e enigmtica,
a provar a fertilidade igualmente profunda e enigm-
tica da mente e gesto humanos. Segundo o ngulo
potico do mestre uruguaio, a pendulao entre fi-
generosamente oferece a quem lhe ousa enfrentar.
Pedra, madeira e metal, o artista prefere as es-
A ideia
cobertura do Erectein, o pequeno templo prximo
do Partenn. certo que essas colunas so literais
was the use of iron, wood and other materials. As
regards marble, the only one to cultivate it with the
sophistication of a craftsman was Sergio Camargo,
a seminal presence in our environment and whose
poetry rooted in geometric abstraction of Op extrac-tion was a linkage point for those, like Jos Resende
and unga, who subsequently tightened their ties
withArte Povera.
Work with stone, measured by the hand, was
thrown aside, a strange situation for a country such
as ours, which had the privilege of producing the
sculptor Aleijadinho, the greatest artist of Colonial
America, our most important artist until the mid
twentieth century.
For all of these reasons, it can be said that was
high time for a new exhibition of Pablo Atchugarry.
Te importance of his lesson on art as an exercise
capable of demonstrating the inexhaustibility of
any medium, whatever it is, even stone, especially
stone, and above all marble, highly esteemed by our
ancestors: profound and enigmatic fertility, proving
the equally profound and enigmatic fertility of the
human mind and gesture. According to the poetic
angle of the Uruguayan master, the swinging be-
tween figure and geometry is not an issue, whose
pertinence is not placed in question. Instead, Pablo
Atchugarry proposes the synthesis of both, paths of
the hand aimed at both obedience to the mind and
the idiosyncrasies of the matter, the lessons which
he generously offers to those who dare to face him.
Stone, wood and metal, the artist prefers vertical
sculptures, a choice which reveals his taste towards
a classical path, since directly underling this angle
is the human body. Te idea that we are vertical,
situated between the ground and the skies, bur-
dened by our own weight, the force of gravity that
falls on everything, starting on our actual bones, is
well established in the architectural pillar, perhaps
in the caryatids, the female figures which support
the porch of the Erechtheion, the little temple close
to the Parthenon. It is clear that these columns are
literal in their reference to the human figure, which
almost never happens in architecture, which more

deixa espao para dvidas. Assim, mesmo quando
Atchugarry prope esculturas aparentemente abstra-
atravessa nossos espritos to contraditrios, o artis-
ta realiza esculturas majestosas, hierticas, simtri-
cas, peas totmicas coesas, grvidas de certeza e
deciso.
mltiplas direes, cumpre salientar as esculturas
s o vertical.

commonly refers to itself. However, in sculpture,
as in the tradition of picture portraits, canonically
composed of vertical rectangular fields, the persis-
tent recurrence of standing human leaves no room
for doubt. Tus, even when Atchugarry proposesapparently abstract sculptures, this art, due to be-
ing vertical, establishes a relationship of spectator-
ship which is placed before it. Te body of the work
against the body of the spectator.
As part of our strategy of construction of equiva-
lences between such different beings, to our daring
verticality, our insubordination against the call of
the earth to return to her, an attitude responsible for
our vacillating tropisms, continuous movements,
symptoms of our physical and spiritual instability,
our constitutive nostalgia, as praise to this audacity,
the artist extracts the stone from the earth, places it
upright to break its compact mass, redesign it in a
more or less open form, similar to quivering flames
or twisted tree trunks, two vital manifestations em-
bodied in a calm manner and which the artist trans-
fers to metal and wood.
Consistent with the range of possibilities open to
our enormously contradictory spirits, the artist cre-
ates sculptures which are majestic, hierocratic, sym-
metric, cohesive totemic pieces, pregnant with cer-
tainty and decision. Tere is also an extensive family
of them composed of parts which break away, and
this is where metallic sculptures stand out, as pet-
als unfolding as they rise upwards, flames which
are resolved in serpentine tongues. Finally, and so
as not to further extend this description of a poetry
which develops in many directions, it is important
to highlight the sculptures which are embodied in
placid solutions, lying bodies, crossed by other vec-
tors which are not only vertical.
In order to accomplish all these possibilities, theartist starts from the point of facing the emphatic
presence of the stone and wood under light, open-
ing them up with lines of shade. Tis appears to re-
spond to the outlines, the scars designed by the tec-
tonic movements mentioned above or to the echoes
recorded by vegetable life in bodies and which brush

alimentos ou atrados pela claridade. O artista reage
sucessivos, estreitos e insondveis, fazendo minar,
O recurso a esses vincos no mrmore
portugus, com sua tonalidade rosada prpria aos
corpos juvenis, turva seu otimismo, prenuncia os
acontecimentos que os espera.
O conhecimento ntimo dessas matrias permi-
te a Pablo Atchugarry que ele as amolea, obriga
seus msculos a se distensionarem, repousem em
poses lassas. Sob seus instrumentos os cortes trans-
formam-se em dobras, planos inchados, prximos
e semelhantes mas nunca iguais. Pedra e madeira
so perfurados, interrompidos, organizados em tor-
no dos vazios que lhes so abertos. O mrmore e a
the surface of these materials like the ephemeral
ripples left by fish when they surface in search of
food or attracted by the light. Te artist reacts to
the hardness of the stone and wood, the hardness
of the way that the light falls on them, tearing opensuccessive, narrow and unfathomable abysses, en-
suring the mining, especially at the surface of white
marble, of the mysterious darkness which inhabits
it. Concerning marble, it should be noted that the
use of Belgian black marble does not annul the ex-
ercise, but rather sharpens it, since the dense dark-
ness of its skin is accentuated in the long narrow
trenches which cut deeply into its flesh. Te black of
the stone absorbs the light while at the same time an
even deeper black threatens to transcend it, a beam
which attracts our eyes in a vain search for its limit.
Te use of these lines in Portuguese marble, with
its rosy hues particular to youthful bodies, blurs its
optimism, as if omens of awaiting events.
His intimate knowledge of these matters enables
Pablo Atchugarry to soften them, forces his muscles
to distend, rest in relaxed poses. Under his instru-
ments, the cuts are transformed into folds, swollen
planes, close and similar but never the same. Stone
and wood are perforated, interrupted, organised
around voids which are opened up inside them. Te
marble and wood breathe and the geometry, planted
in the two, with its accuracy broken by the resistance
of both to the attacks of his hand, also breathes.

his home, an open-air atelier integrated to the sur-
rounding nature.
Te essence of the material, the process and sa-
cred relationship between the artist and all the el-
ements that transmute and go into sculpting, not
only in a creative process on a real creation, and
comes up imposing, but merges with the artist and
prints his soul during the whole artistic creation,
from the moment that he chooses the raw marble, as
it goes through such an organic silence that results
in a work that can speak for itself.
Pablo will expose his process in Brazil this year,
and he intends to create a Real Lab, like a residence
where we can see him sculpting, where he can re-
ceive kids, adults, blind people, and all the public
with the respect and simplicity that are so particular
and at the same time that brings us closer to the
art in a constant process, something cyclic, organ-
ic, that results in surprise and where the shapes are
transformed into architecture that is almost divine.

The mountain's pearl(for Pablo Atchugarry)
Tey are like pearls, the marble and the artist.Tey came into this world due to a just and rare configurationPain of a wound turned into a scar.Peerless, each one, there's only one.
Shame of Nature, Its undoing, Its purge.Visible fluid of Its vain eccentricity.Slow, suffering, wild.Perverse beauty.Subtle secretion.
Pearl and marble.
Te artist is the pearl of men,Created in Culture to Its image and likeness.A titanic aberration made sculptor.Fruit of the arduous impulse felt in the soul.
Phidias, Michel and Atchugarry. Accomplices of matter.Tus were they created by Nature, Mother of stones and of the other elements. In exchange, looking after its children, It trusts them with mysteries and knowledge.Captive preceptors.
Te sculptor holds the knowledge of matter chained to his life. From this slavery, wily strategy engenderedby art throughout the centuries, thousands of art pieces emerge.Tis is the body that keeps alive the very spirit of art. Exo-body kept by the blood and breath of the artist man.Reason of the incessant search undertaken by art within the most rare men.Tus art breathes into their souls, never placating the hunger for enchantment contained within, theso-called inspiration.Fating them to devour a whole mountain till the end of their lives, without it being the end of art.

CURADORES
O MANDATO DA PEDRA
THE STONES MANDATE
tamento do sonho.

Tere is no need to teach a human being the
enchantment of a dream. Pressing imagination into
service in childhood, dreams do not recognise bor-
ders separating them from that which, only later on,
Man will learn to name reality. A childish pretence
of the order of magic is the password authorising
him to gain wings and soar, making a castle from
a handful of wet seaside sand and figuring himself
as living within its spaces. It is thus that Man gives
expression to the power of creation that is his own
and renders him distinct from the others among
Nature's creatures. However, as a son of culture and
of social life, these will end up imposing distinc-
tions, prohibitions and limits, which increasingly
will cause this innate creative impulse to wane and
finally halt altogether.
o create, then, ceases to be a gift from nature
to become an achievement of culture. A patient
achievement, which requires persistence, work and
knowledge to reach the technical command of ma-
terials and instruments that allow the creator to give
concrete form to what palpitates within as a longing
for a confusedly foreseen reality and impels him into
action. Tis we call art.
It was not without further consequence thatPablo Atchugarry was educated as an artist in the
environment that grew up in, a family in which the
taste for art has always played a central role. His
father, an engineer by profession, made the precise
rationality of calculation familiar to him. while at
the same time tirelessly cultivating in young Pablo

jetos a serem postos a servio das necessidades do
homem.
anloga do minrio natural.
expresso, redefinindo-as continuamente, agregan-
o material contemporneo a conformar figuras arcai-
e a natureza.
a imaginante. Os quatro elementos da Natureza de
the capacity to dream, with tales made for a thou-
sand trips of imagination, added to the example of
his own creation. A lover of the arts, Pablos father
studied with the great master Joaqun orres Garca,
dedicating himself to painting and experiments withvarious types of materials, in the creation of what
Pablo calls collages. In this milieu, still a teenager,
the young man was able to turn to drawing and to
the exercise of placing colour on the flat surface of a
canvas, in the art of painting, which would be with
him for many years.
His first sculpture pieces made use of clay and
cement, this not-stone, an artificial earth rationally
produced to yield a resistance akin to the natural
mineral. In this language he would increasingly con-
solidate his own forms of expression, continually re-
defining them, adding the use of wood and metal,
but forcing his material to shape archaic forms,
sprouting from his imagination populated by beasts
and plants, whose company he still enjoys.
So his graphic work would be converted into
signs that sought to transcribe a writing of the world
as Man would have dreamed of in the childhood of
humanity, imagining phytozoomorphic and anthro-
pomorphic alphabets to codify a reality in which
there was still no distinction or distance between
Man and Nature. But an essential mutation in the
artist's trajectory would take place when he found,
in the mountains of Carrara, that which would be-
come his most portentous means of expression, the
language of marble, confronting imagination with a
radically distinct challenge.
Nature's condensed matter, fruit of an uncon-
densible imagination. Or rather, imagination inex-
haustible in its plasticity. For indeed it condenses,
and precisely because of matter, because of the im-
measurable power of its imagining force. Nature's
four elements on which ancient philosophers used
to dwell: Earth, Water, Fire, Air. Around this imagi-
nation of matter, in its deepest arcane, art seeks its
images and its forms, sketches its wiles, weaves its
ever-precarious metaphors about what, otherwise,
would remain unutterable. A visionary search for

o imaginrio realidade presente, embora invisvel,
Delicadas, rtmicas. Be-
Antigas formas presentes no Novo Mundo. A
colunas do Partenon.
e equilbrios naturais. Eternas belezas, to eternas
aninha.
harmonies. If such imagery is in the present reality,
though invisible, in its state of uncondensed mag-
ma, the visionary foresees another invisible reality,
still uncreated, a reality yet to come into being, no
less real than this one which we believe in and aredipped into.
Te artist reports that his forms have been once
associated to the flow of Water, when at first they
yielded from his black paintings, faces and screams
dripping on the canvas. But this is in the past, or
perhaps, is transfiguration and metamorphosis.
For today his marbles have reached the light, and
figure harmonious rhythms, shiningly translucent.
From the initial weight of the painting, he arrives
at the lightness of stone, like harps made of marble.
Delicate, rhythmic. Beautiful as beautiful is the
wind, the breeze that causes the wheat crop, the
chirps and tweets to dance, everything that trills and
undulates. If Michelangelo considered liberating
his forms from the block of stone, Pablo's desire is
close to making them sound, like a harp. If the
Florentine told his Moses - Parla!, Pablo tells his
blocks - Sound! and they indeed resonate.
Ancient forms present in the New World. Te
greatness of Olympian Zeus' statue and the lightness
of the Parthenon columns. Challenges of stone and
marble, which art testifies. Yesterday as today, the
same challenge. In the present-day world, of new
waves, of a new political order, a world of new strat-
egies, new attitudes, but of far-reaching traditions,
of harmonic permanences and natural balances too.
Eternal beauties, as eternal as art, the wind and the
stone. Like the imagination of Air that transfigures
into breeze-like undulations and chirps the murmur
of a spring or the movement of cupped hands out
of which sacred purifying Water flows. Everything
can become volatile expression of the imagination
of Earth, of the mountain and of the stone that rests
within.
Earth's imagery is that of Nature's long last-
ing processes. Tat of the tectonic movements that
originated the mountains, of the concealed Fire that
burns in its entrails, of erosion and condensation,

Linguagem do ver
atravs.
lorao: so seus veios e veias. Caminhos internos
fusion and dissociation from which metals and min-
erals are born. Tat of the safe ground on which
Man was able to build his dwellings. Haven and ref-
uge. But also a challenge of immensity, unreachable
heights, hidden treasures. Gold or marble, comingfrom a time of measure without peer in our earthly
existence. Tis is a vanishing point which the art of
Pablo Atchugarry points to.
However, his pieces also hark to the classic
sculptural tradition of the wet cloth over live mod-
els, in discontinuous empty spaces interspersed by
pleats, like it was given to us in the Winged Victory
of Samothrace, today in the Louvre. A science of
surfaces. Pleated forms, points and flashes of light
despejados, cleared up, as the artist himself says.
Arpeggios, rhythms and silences. Volumetry of the
skin, an artistic language that runs through end-
less centuries of the history of art from Phidias to
Rodin and Medardo Rosso building a sophisticat-
ed language of three-dimensional forms on planes
of little depth.
But it is also a technical knowledge of Nature
by the artist that allows him, with much dexterity,
to come to the point of completely perforating the
stone, of crossing its matter. Te language of seeing
through. Following what is not premeditated by
the sketch, but instead what is allowed to his hand,
that is, what the stone consents. Pablo comments
that his search is for the limit. Limit is to get to
the more fragile points, carefully, like someone who
caresses the marble, and also to excavate, with ham-
mer and chisel, the empty areas that do not com-
promise the support of the block, which, without
this knowledge and this inspired wisdom, would
bring it all down.
Minerals give marble varieties in colour: they are
its blood vessels, its mineral veins. Internal paths
like writing in the matter itself, to be deciphered.
From such latent possibilities, here and there, dis-
covered step-by-step, at every tap of the tools, the
artist carries on revealing only the stone's will.
It is not the case of an effort to create forms, but
to materialise the duration of a time that has given

trumentos, o artista segue revelando to somente a
contemporneo, reivindica menos o conceito histori-
Hoje a
trabalho escravo, para fazer chegar at eles o mr-
form to the stone. Mutual accomplices, the sculp-
tor is the exegete of the marble, and the stone of
the artist, extracting from his work in the course of
the years the precise needs to compose itself into its
forms. Here clearer in whites spaced out by light, there rough, in pleated greys, in the shadow of hol-
low spaces.
Te key for a more correct reading of the work
by Pablo Atchugarry is not in the form, but in the
struggle of the artist with matter. With the imagina-
tion of his matter. For this reason, the point is not to
build a reading of forms of his creation, but of his
experience, it is to know about his processes, his
tools, his instruments. o be before a block and feel
how much it defies us, as we observe its veins, its po-
rosity, its textures. Feel in the body the terror of its
enormity, when it confronts and threatens us, like a
sphinx that tells us: Decipher me or I will devour
you. A reading key that, in order to account for this
art in the contemporary world, claims less the his-
toricist concept of internationalisation of art and
more that of the universal experience of art.
Te means maybe be different, but not the chal-
lenge. oday, science scans the stone's intimacy, un-
veils the mysteries of its colours, reveals the chemi-
cal composition of the minerals of its veins, so that
the artist can better know what he is confronting.
And a logistic infrastructure is available to him, one
of great complexity and cost, for the marble blocks
of nearly ten tons need to be transported from the
quarries of Italy, Belgium or Portugal to his two stu-
dios, in Lecco and Punta del Este. Neither Phidias
nor Michelangelo were able to enjoy such achieve-
ments of modernity. And one has to appreciate the
gigantic route of sacrifices, dotted by ships, driven
horses and perhaps slave labour, that delivered to
them the marble for the Parthenon's Athena or
Florence's David. But once faced with the raw stone
lovingly chosen placed before them, how could the
exultant joy and the shudder of terror, the antici-
pated ecstasy of creation about to be carried out, be
different?

a produzir inmeras obras gigantescas.
do poderia faz-lo. A natureza brindou apenas a ele
com o dom do seu chamado, e ele a atende, en-
quanto a vida lhe permitir atender e reverenciar essa
rara escolha.
nascimento? Filhos da pedra, todos so irmos, na
mesma coragem.
do efmero.
O criador cria frente eternidade, para alm do

Pablo Atchugarry is contemporary to us as he
yields before the vertigo of time, when he voracious-
ly dedicates himself to heed the call of the stone,
producing countless gigantic pieces. But, beyond
this time, he knows no one else in the world couldhave done it. Nature has bestowed on him alone the
gift of his call, and he heeds it, while life permits
him to respond to and to revere this rare choice.
How could it possibly be different with an artist of
Classic Antiquity or the Renaissance? Sons of the
stone, all are brothers, in the same courage.
Te sculptures by this extraordinary Uruguayan
artist from our time lead us to think beyond, think
about the time of art and the human condition.
One could say that the great artists of the past cre-
ated their pieces for eternity, in praise of their gods,
while a great artist today, entangled in the vortex
of time, can only aspire to an ephemeral glory that
vanishes away. Notwithstanding, how to accept this
as we glimpse the boundless demands that art im-
poses on them, equally to all, almost in the manner
of a servitude?
Te creator creates in the face of eternity, beyond
the limit of present time. And thus he teaches us that
maybe one can think that there is no human condi-
tion to be set apart from the condition of transcen-
dence that art exposes before our eyes, in an exem-
plary manner. In order for life to be so called and to
be fit to be lived, it is necessary to abandon oneself
to the task for which one has been chosen, whatever
the weight of the burden may be. It is a duty to go
beyond a mere self consciousness, closed within
one's circumstances of time and space. And for this
it is necessary to distance oneself from such narrow
limits, allowing conscience to dilute, become pure
void, so as to be able paradoxically to experience, in
a state of immanence, the existence of the world like
birds, plants, beasts, rivers or the stone do.

dition beyond itself. o live in order to learn that
