What is a shelter? It is a place that makes us feel safe and protected. Two aspects that for thousandsof years our biodiversity has found in this lost biological laboratory. Geological, geographic andweather process have made of this region, a propitious place for proliferation of life. A biodiversity
shaped by geological and evolutionary process, which through time, and as a result of this, has givena collection of amazing different life forms. A great part of these singular organisms representendemic species of the region, making Chile one of the 25 hotspots for world conservation.
When I started this Project, I had in mind something very clear; I wanted to show to the peoplesomething that was quite obvious, something that is out there, something that people is still unawareof, our Biodiversity. Throughout the years, I have had the chance to travel across the country severaltimes, whether as a Biologist, as a photographer or guiding groups of people that want to know thiswild nature. Since I was a kid, I have felt a special connection with nature, and this has driven me toexperience unique moments of encounters with wild life. These special moments are the ones that Iwant to share with you through a collection of pictures. The purpose of this work is to learn to observe and to amaze yourself with the simple things of nature,
and it is also to generate a bigger respect for other beings that live in with us in this region. My goal with this book is to show Chile itself, the Chile that only a few stop to observe, that wild
Chile, that exists in every corner of the country, not to make a recognition guide or a tourist guide toshow Chile from South to North, it was to show the other Chile..

As a biologist, it is very odd to find life in what is inert. When observing the sterile desert, I realize that it is aliving entity, that breathes with the wind, grows withtelluric movements, and grows old with the erosion ofthe surface. Every time I return to the desert, it is a
little different fron the previous time, a little younger, alittle older.

Patience and constancy is the only secret to achievepictures like this one. Suddenly, a small space in the sky
opens, in a completely cloudy day, allowing a ray oflight illuminate these flooded logs, in Lake Captrn.
When you are taking pictures of nature, you must moveand feel the rhythm of it, not the one imposed by us. It
is the only way of capturing the essence that makesnature unique.

Jean Paul de la Harpe Zubiaur
Born in Santiago de Chile in 1976, since he was a child he was interested in nature. His motivations were theconservation of the biodiversity, reason why he has a Degree in Biology in the Universidad Catolica of Chile. As a biologist heparticipated in several research projects going from Marine Biology up to terrestrial Ecology. In the year 2000 he starts hisDoctorate in Ecology in the same university, withdrawing from it very soon, looking for a more participative way of conservation
and environmental education in our country. This is why, in the year 2001 he starts his own enterprise of Eco-tourism andenvironmental education called, Abtao, still valid.Naturalist and self-taught Photographer, owns a great passion for nature and for passing on his message to the rest of the
people. These days, he finds himself living in the south in the region of Araucania, developing Ecotouristic projects andEnvironmental Education.
