These letters have been translated with the permission of Ediciones Era and can be found in Remedios Varo: Cartas, sueños y otros textos.1 They were originally published in 1994 by the Autonomous University of Tlaxcala, in conjunction with the National Institute of Fine Arts, for the exposition Remedios Varo: 1908-1963, an exposition organized by the Museum of Modern Art of Mexico in 1994. Walter Gruen, Remedios Varo’s third husband, made observations and provided comments on the original manuscripts, which are noted in the footnotes of Cartas, sueños y otros textos, some of which I have also translated and appear in the footnotes of the letters that follow. In translating Varo’s letters from Spanish to English, I attempted to conserve the original meaning of the texts as much as possible. Varo’s imaginative language and linguistic experimentation makes translation a difficult task, but I tried to translate Varo’s words literally, while adapting the syntax of the sentence as necessary. Varo’s creativity can lead to ambiguity in meaning, even in the Spanish language version of the letters, which makes an intelligible English translation doubly difficult. Despite the obstacles in translating the letters of this Surrealist artist, the results open up Varo’s literary universe to the English-‐speaking world.

Letter 1- To Gerardo Lizarraga2 This, Gerardo, oh what pain that I read now, letter of loneliness, withered laments, which could have been—
was it at one time? — Famous canticle. On the condition of understanding that Paris, London, Guanajuato, Florence, Buenos
Aires, Moscow, etcetera, will inevitably convert into marvelous or unfortunate cities, according to your mental state. You may go from one place to another, but as long as you’re not well, nothing around you will be.
It’s difficult for me to comprehend why having your talent recognized seems important to you. I thought that for a creator what is important is to create, the evolution of his work was secondary, and that fame, admiration, people’s curiosity, etcetera, were more inevitable consequences than things desired.
The young woman, Angela or Angelica (I’m not sure), who calls herself Nadine for literary reasons, I don’t think she’s the character you imagine, but it is very natural that Zeus (no less!) tries to raise her to her most splendid condition. It seems, however, that there is a contradiction, considering that the pejorative term Peronelle doesn’t seem fair to me either. 3
In my opinion, she is not (far from) a Peronelle. I disagree with what you say about Juliana.4 Everything she did or undid, as crazy as
it would seem to an observer with prejudices, it was done in the way one should do things; that is, with courage and without fear of the consequences. In this way, everyone has the right to act as he or she pleases. But to throw oneself in the water to swim and not want to get your clothes wet, this, Gerardo, is impossible.
To this you would respond that if you had a lot of money, you could pay a maid to take care of everything so there would be no consequences, that is to say, that in reality, your wife acts like the housekeeper, butler, secretary, nanny, etcetera. If you had enough money, of course! you could hire all these domestic staff without a problem. But whatever it was Juliana did, she did it bravely, losing everything or gaining everything.
2 Gerardo Lizarraga was Remedios Varo’s first husband (married 1930-‐1936) and she continued to
maintain a friendly relationship with him, even after they separated, Cartas, sueñas y otros textos, 69. 3 “Peronelle” is a misspelling of the French word péronnelle, meaning a silly or foolish young girl, who
is very talkative or chatty. As Varo noted, it often has a negative connotation. Definition found at: http://dictionnaire.sensagent.com/peronnelle/fr-‐fr/.
4 This may be a reference to Juliana González, Mexican philosopher and friend of Varo’s. See also Carta 2 and accompanying footnote.

Carta 2- A Juliana González y Mercedes de La Garza
¡Oh diosas tan admirables cuan esquivas!
5
Letter 2 – To Juliana González and Mercedes de La Garza5 Oh goddesses, as admirable as elusive!
A number of peculiar events have happened to me, among alcoholics, musicals, and vaudeville (pardon my Gallicism).6 All sprinkled with a strong melodramatic component.
Although you live apart from the madding crowd,7 perhaps you will agree to come one of these days to this very humble hut, where we will talk and drink water from chestnuts, asparagus juice and perhaps admire some rather well done engravings that depict Dionysus,8 Noah and some other British colonel, retired from his service in the Indies. The contemplation of these engravings produces a certain state of inebriation, non-‐alcoholic, but almost hypnophotonic, which the specialists say doesn’t attack the liver but only the salivary glands and is harmless.

Carta 3- Un pintor no identificado
Letter 3- To an unidentified painter9
My dear Sir, I have let a reasonable amount of time pass and now I believe, in fact, I am certain that your spirit is inclined to communicate with me. I am a reincarnation of a friend you had in the past. She was not very attractive, physically speaking: large nose, freckled skin, reddish hair, underweight. Fortunately, the only physical characteristic that my present incarnation has retained is the red hair. The rest, my friend, how beautiful!: Greek nose, seductive curves, without being obese, blessings of abundance unrivaled and, in a nutshell…what does it matter that I have some wrinkles? An insignificant detail! They are the equivalent to the fine patina that good-‐quality objects acquire.
This reincarnation was not easy. After my spirit had first gone through the body of a cat, then through the body of an unknown creature belonging to the world of speed—that is to say, that one that goes through us at more than 300 thousand kilometers per second (and so, therefore, we cannot see)—I ended up, inexplicably, in the heart of a piece of quartz. By the benevolence of an abominable storm, the electrical phenomena were working in my favor and a falling flash of lighting on the piece of quartz rescued my spirit, which, describing a spiral, came to rest in the body of a plump woman who was wandering around. I feel satisfied with this situation, so I dare to write to you, with the understanding that you have not forgotten me.
I thought that the telephone was an inhibitory and very cold means of communication. But writing letters to each other is different. I believe that my stay in a piece of quartz is in an experience that might interest you; other small discoveries, too. I am prepared to communicate everything.
This poem might seem cryptic at first glance, but the simplest of electronic
machines, so widely used today, could analyze and clarify it. If you are so inclined to respond, give me a detailed account of your current activity.10
9 Although the recipient of this letter is unidentified, the text seems to have been sent to a real friend
and fellow painter Cartas, sueños y otros textos, 71. 10 The “poems” that Varo includes in this letter are an example of automatic writing, which was a
common practice of the Surrealist artists and writers, in which they produced work by letting their thoughts

My activity in the last four months has consisted of raising a supernatural puppy. It is a talking animal, friendly, and useful if there were severe droughts, given that an amber liquid flows almost constantly from his body. Most people would believe it to be urine, but I know it’s something of a superior chemical composition.
Because I live in a room with a non-‐absorbent floor, I have considered sending the animal to live in Cuernavaca,11 in a garden where the plants could benefit from the moisture this creature produces.
In regard to the maniacal activity called Painting…what can I say? We were both attacked by this evil, if you want to remember. I don’t know if you’ve continued with this strange form of perversion, but I have, unfortunately, and I feel increasingly ashamed by such frivolity.
Do you smoke? I have launched a titanic struggle against nicotine and smoke in general. I’ve reached a partial conquest of the matter and on the good days I only smoke six cigarettes. On the days of longing, depression and when everything is a mess, well then, I don’t know! This should clearly and precisely explain it.
Good! Of insomnia, cold sweat, injections of liver extract, of a desire to bore a hole in the ground to hide inside-‐ I say nothing! I wait for your news and only then will I communicate to you how I was visited some time ago by a siren sorceress, a fervent admirer of yours, and very worried and uneasy because of your withdrawal from everyday life. A mystery! I live, like before, in this little castle on Álvaro Obregón 72, with telephone number 11 20 84. I remember the old paellas, free movement, and your phalanges.

Carta 4: Al Doctor Alberca

Letter 4: To Doctor Alberca12
Dear Doctor Alberca, I received a letter from my brother Rodrigo, in which he told me that you were
interested in some of the photographs of on my paintings and the comments I made on them. Also that you wish to include some of them in a book you are preparing and at a conference. Of course, I have no objections, but I don’t remember very well the tone of the comments I made. Because they were addressed to my brother, I don’t know if they will have an overly personal quality. This would not be of any importance if it all these paintings didn’t belong to different people who would be outraged if they suddenly find out that I had said, “this is the worst painting that I have ever painted,” or, what a shame that I didn’t decide to paint Doctor Chávez with a beautiful hawk head, like the one he has,” etcetera. I defer to your good judgment to remove any phrase of this sort from my comments, which, furthermore, doesn’t have anything to do with the essence of the text.
My brother tells me that you would like these pictures soon, but I cannot send then right now. This time of the year, because of the Christmas holiday, there’s a lot of disorder and foolish disturbances here. It would be impossible for me to obtain the photographs, and even if I had them (as I do have some), it would be useless to mail them because you’d never receive them. The post office here is an institution with irregular and capricious customs any time of year, but especially now, when it turns into an infernal beehive of letters, packages, and cards, launched into space in the approximate direction and you cannot trust that they will arrive in a reasonable amount of time (if they arrive at all). Therefore, if it seems good and it’s not too late for you, I will send you a packet of photos once the disorder and festivity has passed, let’s say around the 6th or 8th of January. Please let me know by this date if you are still interested. I wish you a happy New Year and send you warm greetings.
Remedios Varo

issues that concerned her, Cartas, sueños y otros textos, 74.

After writing the attached letter, which I consider a model of simplicity and sobriety, I add this paper that you should consider written by my double. This is the first time that I write to a psychiatrist in a manner that is open and undisguised, because I have done it three times before, slyly and mysteriously, without obtaining results. I wanted to test the waters before I contacted anyone, not to judge his or her wisdom or ability, since I am unable to do so, but rather his character as a human being. I believe that a psychiatrist should inspire love and trust, above all. Ah, I am forgetting to tell you that my interest in approaching a psychiatrist is because I suffer greatly from a permanent sense of guilt. As I have not been able to get better on my own, I thought that I needed someone’s help. I signed the mysterious letters with the pretentious but Machiavellian name, Gradiva.13 Well, no one answered and that’s how things turned out! It happens that I saved a copy of one of the letters (the others were roughly the same) and I included it. I was very surprised not to receive an answer; perhaps the people in your profession are overwhelmed daily with an avalanche of foolish documents. Naturally, you could easily ignore all this written by my double, with the understanding that I know all too well that you are very busy and that you will not have much spare time; but don’t not answer me about the matter of the photographs because I dared to write to you with such freshness and freedom…
13 No letters from Varo signed with the name “Gradiva” have been preserved. As she writes above,
this letter was a draft, signed Gradiva, which she sent to Doctor Alberca along with the others. As indicated in the Introduction to Cartas, sueños y otros textos, perhaps the letter signed “Gradiva” would be similar to the letters that follow, which are addressed to psychologists and characterized by humor and parody, 75.
It is important to note that the name “Gradiva” is significant to the Surrealist art movement. The Gradiva (Latin for “the woman who walks”) is an ancient Roman relief sculpture, depicting a young robed woman. Sigmund Freud owned a copy of the relief and famously analyzed the novel Gradiva (Freud, Delusion and Dream in W. Jensen's “Gradiva,” 1907). The figure of Gradiva was used in paintings done by various Surrealist artists, including Salvador Dalí, in their paintings, and André Breton, the “Father of Surrealism,” named an art gallery after it, Maurice Nadeau, A History of Surrealism, trans. Richard Howard (New York: Macmillan, 1965).

Nosotros somos casi abstemios y medio vegetarianos.

Letter 5: To a stranger Dear Stranger, I don’t completely know if you are a lonely man or a family man, if you are a timid introvert or a cheerful extrovert, but whatever the case may be, perhaps you are bored and wish to intrepidly throw yourself into the middle of a group of strangers with the hope of hearing something that would interest or distract you. Also, the feeling of curiosity and some restlessness can be an incentive; therefore I propose that you come to spend New Year’s Eve at house number… on… [street name]. I have chosen your name almost by chance from the phonebook, and I say almost because I looked for the page where you find the listings of those in your profession, I believe (perhaps mistakenly) that among them there is a greater probability of finding someone with a good spirit and sense of humor. I should clarify that I am not the owner of the house; she is completely unaware of this gesture and would probably deem it preposterous. I am simply invited to go there, along with a few other people, but in order to attend you should first call this number […] and ask for Ms. Elena. Firmly claim that you had met before, that you are a friend of Edward, and that being alone and depressed, you would like to spend New Year’s at her house. I will be among the invited and you must guess which of them I am. I believe this could be fun. If you are younger than thirty, it’s perhaps better for you to do nothing. You would probably be bored. Although neither the others nor I are old, we’re not a group of wild young people either. Ah!, this is not an extravagant affair either, but more like a psycho-‐humorous experiment, nothing more. I am almost sure that you will not go. It takes tremendous poise to do so, and very few people have it. You could also think that this is a joke being played by one of your friends, or that this letter is clever propaganda to take people to a shady place, etcetera, etcetera. It’s nothing like that; the house is a very respectable bourgeoisie residence; I, and all the others, are pleasant bourgeoisies that, nevertheless, as is happening to me right now, can sometimes feel an irresistible impulse to play tricks like an adolescent, in spite of my age and everything.
I am going to copy this letter and send it to another stranger too. Perhaps one of the two of you will show up. If you both came, that would be something extraordinary and unprecedented. Well, perhaps I’ll see you soon… On second thought, I believe I’m mad as a hatter. Don’t be under the illusion that the room will be crossed by the aurora borealis, nor by the ectoplasm of your grandmother; neither will it rain hams nor will anything in particular happen, and as I give you this assurance, I hope that you are neither a gangster nor a drunk. We are almost all non-‐drinkers and half vegetarians.

Letter 6: Tribulations of a member of the group “The Observers of the Interdependence of Domestic Objects and their Influence in Everyday Life”14 Dear Sir, I write to you begging your pardon for having taken this liberty, as well as for my bad French. I am gravely disturbed and I dare not entrust to any of the people around me the certain disturbances that I suffer, about which I believe you will be able to advise me.
It started about six months ago. I was enthusiastically painting a picture where you see a nice meadow with sheep and cows serenely wandering about. I confess that I felt satisfied with my work, but suddenly an irresistible force pushed me to paint, on the back of each sheep, a small staircase, at the top of which you found an image of my neighbor across the street; on the cows I found myself placing, not without anguish, some well-‐folded handkerchiefs. You can imagine my surprise and grief. I hid these paintings, starting others, but I found myself always urged to put strange elements in them, until a moment came, when having spilled, by chance, some tomato sauce on my pants, I found the stain so extremely significant and exciting that I quickly cut out the piece of cloth and framed it. I have found myself forced to lead a semi-‐clandestine life since the moment I painted that first picture I mentioned to you, fearing that upon discovery, my people would make me be examined by a psychiatrist.
Not long before these pictorial phenomena took place, I had dedicated myself to the task of rearranging the solar system on my table, an activity that has to be done every 210 days, because it is an obligatory assignment for all of the members of the group “Observers of the Interdependence of Domestic Objects and their Influence in Everyday Life.” This group has been active for a long time and has already made significant findings that have made life simpler, from a practical point of view. For example: I move a jar of green paint about five centimeters to the right, pin a thumbtack15 beside a comb, and if Mr. A…(a member who works closely with me) puts his book about beekeeping next to a pattern for cutting a vest at that moment, then I am sure the encounter with a women who interests me and whose origin I still haven’t been able to figure out, nor her address, will take place, on Madero Avenue. We’ve achieved some victories in everyday life, as you can see. I do not cite more examples for fear of boring you, but I could give you a more comprehensive view of our group’s activities, if it interests you. So far you know that my ancestors had not conceived of the wheel for utilitarian purposes (they only used it to make toys), and this was not for a lack of pack animals, since the slaves and prisoners of war could have been used for this purpose, but rather because their intelligence developed in a completely different direction. Among their KNOWLEDGE, some aspects have been kept in the strictest secrecy, operations that reduced infinite variations and mathematical combinations to nothingness. In a relatively short period of time, from these operations, many cause and effect relationships can be established, combining and varying the elements-‐objects. But returning to my personal case: when handling an old phone book, a laurel branch, a bug, a comb, a jar of green paint, a woman’s shoe made of purple velvet and embroidered with pearls, and a fake 5 peso coin (this collection of objects is my

15 I translated chinche as “thumbtack” in this context, but it can also mean bed, bedbug, or pest.
19
instrumental universe, whose function is concordant and interdependent with the universes of the other group members), I recently allowed myself to introduce, as a novelty, a hummingbird, preserved and filled with magnetic powder, tied well with a rope like mummies are wrapped in, using a red silk thread. I did it without warning my colleagues, a very serious transgression within the rules of the group. Only our leader, with his past experience and his high level of knowledge, can make something like that without causing serious consequences. What’s more, I specifically placed the jar of green paint under a beam of red light that filtered in through my stained glass window (added horror!) I did all of this, without considering the consequences (having been a member of the group for a short time, my control reached only to the objects that I mentioned above). As was expected, certain incidents have occurred since the day of my transgression: my best blouse has burned, a large deposit of salt has accumulated beneath my bed, and the next day, the beginning of the startling transformation of my pictorial inspiration took place. Now I wonder, is all this a result of my initiative to introduce new elements into my solar system? Is it a sudden discharge of my subconscious, which in an attempt at emancipation, has led me to act in a disorderly manner about the extremely important factors that constitute my practical-‐domestic universe? Or, am I just a lunatic? My usual occupations consist of the sale of a French brand of perfume, which I represent, and I am also responsible for an herbal pharmacy. As for painting, I am only a hobby painter. Recently I had the good luck of reading some surrealist publications that were very helpful for me and quite reassuring. It made me decide to write to you, to ask your opinion about my line of conduct, as well as ask your advice about what books I should read to enlighten me in this respect.
I hope to have piqued your interest in my case. Your response is the nourishment my spirit most longs for at this time.

Letter 7: To Mr. Gardner Dear Mr. Gardner, I was just introduced to your book, which has greatly piqued my interest. One of my friends, Mrs. Carrington, has been kind enough to translate it for me, because I am unable to read or speak English.16 I believe that corresponding with you or with one of the people in your circle (if you are too busy with your research) would be extremely interesting, to communicate our experiences and knowledge with each other. As you already know, in this country there is a lot of activity in the field of witchcraft; but all of the practices are almost always limited to medical exercises or the manufacture of love potions, all in a rather mechanical way, and somewhat distracted by the witch doctor, solely because that is the custom. The main factor is always the faith of the patient, which naturally produces good results in most cases. But this, which is without a doubt interesting to the psychologist and psychiatrist, is not what interests us. In love potions, things are a little more complicated and dangerous, considering that it is customary to administer “Jimson weed” disguised in a cup of coffee, and the effects of ingesting Jimson weed are fatal, the main one being a total loss of will. Well, leaving all that aside, we, that is, Mrs. Carrington and some other people, have devoted ourselves to search for facts and data that are still preserved in remote regions and that participate in the true exercise of witchcraft. Personally, I don’t believe I have been provided with special powers, but rather with a capacity to quickly see cause and effect relationships outside of the ordinary limits of common logic. Also, after many years of experimentation, I have come to be able to conveniently arrange the small solar systems from home. I have grasped the interdependence of the objects and the necessity of placing them in a certain way in order to avoid disaster, or suddenly changing their placement to provoke events necessary for the common good. For example, selecting my big leather chair as the central star, which has surrounding it and at 50 centimeters away, positioned east to west, a wooden table (originally, a workbench and strongly coated with artisanal emotions); behind the chair, two and a half meters away, the skull of a crocodile; to the left of the chair, among other objects, a pipe encrusted with fake diamonds, and, to the right, three meters away, an ordinary green ceramic jar; I have a solar system (I do not enter into a detailed description of it all, it would be too long), which I can move at will, knowing in advance the effects that I can produce, although sometimes the incalculable happens, caused by the rapid trajectory of an unexpected meteor, through my established order. The meteor is none other than my cat, but little by little I am becoming able to control this hazardous factor, now that I have discovered that, by exclusively feeding the cat sheep’s milk, his trajectory produces almost no effect.
16 Leonora Carrington (1917-‐2011) was a fellow Surrealist artist and good friend of Varo’s. She was
English-‐born, but lived and worked Mexico for the majority of her life. Carrington and Varo collaborated on many projects. Cf. Susan L. Aberth, Leonora Carrington: Surrealism, Alchemy, and Art (Farnham: Ashgate/Lund Humphries, 2010); Stefan van Raay, Joanna Moorhead, and Teresa Arcq, Surreal Friends: Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo and Kati Horna (Surrey, UK: Lund Humphries in association with Pallant House Gallery, 2010), http://www.surrealfriends.com/.
23
Of course, my friends also have the task of arranging small solar systems in a convenient form in their homes, and we have established an interdependence among them all. Sometimes we move stars from one house to another, of course, never making a change without all being in agreement; otherwise, unpleasant things sometimes happen. I should say that we have come to accomplish all this thanks to an extremely long and profound study of the mathematic variations and combinations, for which we utilized the natural ability that one of our members has for grouping together beings and objects according to their true nature. The first step was the immediate revelation that our friend had: that his right shoe, a red velvet curtain, and a piece of opera (which was heard in that moment) were exactly equivalent. From then on, everything was easy, since summarizing things in large groups, the mathematic work on variations and combinations can be done quickly.
Now I wish to ask you something. This land on which we live is extremely volcanic (as you will already know). One of the members of our group finds himself in a very difficult situation because of the volcanic agitation below the surface. Being a person of limited financial means, he lives in a house that is ancient and devoid of all comfort, although on the other hand, it benefits from spaciousness and a fairly large courtyard. This house is situated in a very central place in the city. A few months ago, a small mound started to rise up by itself in the patio. From the mound a little smoke and an intense heat began to emerge; later, and at longer intervals, emerged small quantities of that which we immediately saw with horror was lava. There is no doubt about it: it is a small volcano that may at anytime become a tremendous threat. Our friend, who does not have the necessary means to look for another accommodation, wants this to be kept a secret, because otherwise, he would be thrown out of his house, which would make the landlord happy, that, with the pretext of volcano, would construct in this place a large building equipped with central heat.
That being said, we have seen at once the possibility of doing some experiments with this manifestation of nature. Quickly, we all constructed some walls and a roof around the volcano to hide it from the looks of the neighborhood. Currently, this enclosure serves as a kitchen. The height of the mound allows for comfortable cooking over its crater, and I must say it is remarkable for obtaining shish kabob and brochettes done to perfection. But we have gotten away from the advice I wanted to ask you. In spite of the incessant work that we have done, from multiple experiments, etcetera, etcetera, we have not been able to include in any way the substances thrown by the volcano inside of our solar systems, nor use them in any way within our practices. The fresh lava is completely rebellious and behaves in a seemingly independent manner. Up until now, the only result has been a strong allergy attack suffered by Mrs. Carrington, who applied a certain amount to her scalp. Perhaps you know the possibilities of this substance and the way to take advantage of the energy that it contains. According to my judgment, and coming from depths not imbued with our emotions and belonging to a world denser with mineral emotions, it escapes our understanding for the moment. But I ardently desire to understand it in order to, if possible, help it in its trajectory towards a less dense world and make it also understand and participate in our purposes. I beg you to communicate to me what you know about this material as soon as possible, for the volcano has not grown more than one centimeter a week, but we cannot know what will happen in the following months.

I fear that my letter is too long and, although I would like to talk to you about other things, especially the convictions that I share with you about the possibility of destroying the deadly effects of the hydrogen bomb by means of certain practices, I leave the talk of this for another occasion, if you have the kindness to answer me.

¿Qué voy a hacer?
Remedios Varo

Letter 8: To an unidentified scientist17 Mexico, November 11, 1959 Dear friend: Your letter arrived this morning with the check and I inform you directly of this happy event. We already have an export permit for the painting, and as soon as the packing box is complete, we will ship it to you by air. The box will be very strong; we have commissioned it to a trusted carpenter.
I thank you for the kind interest that you have shown for my health. My fifth lumbar vertebra was very rebellious and painful. It prevented me from painting, but I made the most of it by writing some well-‐researched anthropological notes, because for some time now I have wanted to point out the fact, unknown until the present, that the ancestor of the Homo sapiens is the Homo rodans. I don’t know if you will be interested in learning about these notes, but if that were the case, and since there are only a few pages, I will have it translated for you and sent to you. In any case, I am sending you a photograph of the Homo Rodans, which perhaps will interest you, given that you are a man of science.18 Before continuing, I wish to warn you that, if in any of my letters you find a word you don’t understand, it is useless to look it up in a dictionary, because my spelling is, unfortunately, completely different from that recognized by current dictionaries, poor me! You wanted some biographical information about me. I was born in Spain, studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, I went to live in Paris, where I became part of the Surrealist group; then, I settled here, where the climate is much better from every point of view. I will look for articles and clippings from newspapers that speak of my painting and send them to you.
As soon as we put the painting on the plane, I will write to inform you that it has been shipped.
I hope that if you devote yourself to chemical experimentation, what happened to me will not happen to you. I think that I can tell you about it: I was doing experiments to find a product, which, as strange seems, was neither an elixir for eternal youth, nor the means for transforming into gold all the solids around me. I wanted to find a substance that would soften and reduce to an impalpable film the skin of green beans,19 which I like very much, but hurt my stomach because of the skin. Given that I am convinced that the great discoveries are the result of chance (objective chance) perhaps, but in those which
17 This letter was originally composed by Varo in French, and translated into Spanish by the editor of Cartas, sueños y otros textos, Isabel Castells.
18 The Homo rodans is a creation of Varo’s imagination, which she depicted in various paintings and described in her writing. It is a fantastical creature, with both human and animalistic characteristics, and has a wheel instead of legs. In this letter, which references her painting Homo Rodans (1959), Varo claims it to be an ancestor of the Homo sapien. Additional information on the Homo rodans can be found in a commentary that Varo first published in 1965, entitled “De Homo Rodans.” It is reprinted in Cartas, sueños y otros textos, 89-‐96, along with a commentary by editor Isabel Castells, 42-‐49.
19 In this letter, the French word haricots (green beans) has been mistakenly translated into Spanish as melocotones (peaches). I referred back to the original letter written in French to ensure that the translation was accurate as possible.

objectivity cannot interfere with mathematical combinations and variations in order to establish a cause-‐effect relationship, I did experiments with diverse substances. At the same time, I played some special and specific notes on a monochord instrument; this sound, if I am correct, could have a decisive and transcendental importance on the substances that I was trying to combine. Suddenly, something terrible happened. At the moment I when I was playing the note si and just when I was passing to the next octave in a slightly more serious tone, the cat meowed and someone who was passing by in the street in front of the window projected his shadow on the experimentation table and over the substances that I had emulsified there. These substances had separated leaving a tiny brilliant particle, a sort of pearl, which went out the window like an arrow, rose into space and quickly disappeared from view. But what’s terrible is that it has left behind, permanently, a thread of terrestrial atmosphere.
This particular substance, not affected by gravity, was, fortunately, very small, and after having done various mathematical calculations, I have come to the conclusion that the Earth will not lose its atmosphere for at least 62 more years. Obviously, we need not personally worry, but we should think of our nephews and descendents. This is the reason that compels me look for the way to put a cover on this dangerous hole that is in our atmosphere. Even though I have gathered the same elements, that I have placed in the exact same spot on the table, that I have done it on the same date of year and that I have played the note si on the same monochord instrument (of course in the necessary tone so that the non gravitational new pearl would not go too far away and would stop just on the edge of the atmosphere like a cork) and that my cat meowed in the same way and that all the members of a family marched past the window projecting their shadow; in spite all that, the experiment did not succeed. I know very well that the shadow must be that of the same person who passed by then. But, who is it? I have looked for it everywhere. It was a man and was enveloped in a black velvet cape, but I have not been able to find him. I have traveled, I have asked questions, I have asked many men to meet me beneath my window, but none of them was he. What am I going to do? Advise me. All this happened three years ago; we still have 59 years of atmosphere remaining. I beg you to write me and tell me if you have been able to read my abominable French, also tell me your opinion about Homo Rodans. I send you my very cordial greetings,
Remedios Varo
