Welcome to the 2015-2016 Shakopee Lifestyle Guide. What makes Shakopee such a welcoming commu-
nity? For this year’s guide we asked for your advice and called upon a random sampling of Shakopee residents to tell us what they love about living here. Throughout our 2015-16 Shakopee Lifestyle Guide, you’ll see what they enjoy about the city, the community, the businesses and all the other amenities that make Shakopee not just where they live but what makes it their home.
From the racing excitement at Canterbury Park to outra-geous re-creations of the 16th century at the Renaissance Festival and the amusements at Valleyfair, Shakopee is an entertainment mecca for people of all ages and interests. RiverSouth, a public-private collaboration, has formed to help promote all the opportunities that exist in the area.
Whatever your hobby or recreational interest, Shakopee offers something fun for everyone. The Community Center has an ice arena, walking/running track and a teen center. Shakopee is also home to the Stans Historical Center in which the Maurice Stans collection and the county’s historical society
collection are housed. It also has a large public library conve-niently located in the downtown area.
The community offers both private and public schools, which work together to provide a good foundation for children. The city also has an extensive park system and the adjacent Minnesota Valley Wildlife Trail is a nature-lover’s treasure.
This publication offers a directory of information and resources used by Shakopee area businesses and residents, especially those who are new to this area.
The Lifestyle Guide is a compilation of important informa-tion — a single source for lists of services, names, telephone numbers and email addresses. Keep it handy; use it often.
Our apologies in advance for omissions or for changes that occur after publication. Please notify us of information that needs to be updated so it can be kept current throughout the year.
If you would like additional copies of this publication, call our Circulation Department at 952-345-6682. Send information for the Lifestyle Guide to Amanda McKnight at [email protected].

SW METRO’S ENTERTAINMENT CAPITAL
Number of roller coasters at Valleyfair: 7
Number of days the Renaissance Festi-val is open: 16
Number of live racing days at Canter-bury Park: 70
Shakopee is the southwest metro’s entertainment capital. There are so many unique activities and events to experience right
here in town every season of the year.In the late summer into fall, from August through October, the
Renaissance Festival is the place to be. Styled after 16th century England, the festival offers dozens of acrobatic, musical and co-medic shows as well as a cast of jovial costumed actors to make you feel like you’re back in Shakespeare’s time. After 40 years in its rural Shakopee location, the festival will move after its 2016 season, but it’s staying in the southwest metro.
Come harvest time, take the kids to Sever’s Corn Maze for some delightful fall fun, with live music, a petting zoo and even a giant pumpkin blaster, there’s something for the whole family.
When snow hits the ground, there’s still loads to do in Shakopee. Each weekend in December, The Landing hosts “Folkways of the Holidays” that showcases how the different cultures of the Minnesota River Valley celebrated winter holidays in the 19th century. If indoor activities are more your style, take the family to one of the hockey games at Shakopee’s Community Center, where the local school and association leagues exhibit high levels of competition.
Spring brings with it opening day for both Valleyfair and Canterbury Park’s racing season, which both open in May. Val-leyfair has a huge variety of things to do: waterslides, roller coasters, and even a dinosaur park! At Canterbury Park, catch the thrill of betting on a winning pony — or even a bulldog or ostrich during the track’s popular extreme races. And the fun at both places doesn’t stop when summer ends. Events from beer gardens to craft fairs to sno-cross racing make Canterbury Park the place to be. And come Halloween, Valleyfair transforms into ValleySCARE, complete with four haunted trails and mazes.
And don’t forget, Shakopee’s parks and trails that connect from Chanhassen to Bloomington to Prior Lake are open year round for biking, running, dog-walking, cross-country skiing, and in some designated areas snowmobiling.
“There is a reason Shakopee is where the Midwest comes to play! With some of the best attractions in the region, one day is not enough time to do them all,” said Shakopee Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau President Angie Whitcomb.

OPTIONS FOR ALL PALATES
A melting pot of cultures and generations, Shakopee is home to a food scene that’s eclectic, high quality and delicious. From
international flavors to lunchtime favorites and local hot spots, Shakopee has all the right ingredients to tickle your tastebuds.
Javier Avalos, who has lived in Shakopee for about 20 years, said he and his family love frequenting restaurants like Taco Loco and Mr. Pig Stuff, which are locally owned and next door to each other on north Shakopee’s main thoroughfare County Road 101.
“With places like that, all locally owned, you know they’re part of the community. Their kids are in the same schools, they go to the same parks. It’s a nice feel,” Avalos said. “And the food is just great.”
Shakopee has major dining hubs in its downtown, along Marschall Road and Vierling Drive, and in the Southbridge Cross-ings retail development. But there are hidden gems peppered throughout the city, like popular ice cream joint Coffee Ta Cream at Shakopee Town Square or Shakopee’s only craft brewery, Badger Hill Brewing Company. During the warmer months, Shakopee also has a weekly farmer’s market.
But what locals crave every year is the slew of food trucks and stands that come to Shakopee’s annual festival Derby Days. Held in late July in Huber Park, Derby Days invites dozens of food trucks serving up burgers, tacos, gyros, cheese curds and so much more.
And Shakopee’s dining options are always expanding. By the end of 2015, a new cafe and an Irish pub-themed restaurant are anticipated to open right in downtown. No matter what you like to eat, there is something in Shakopee for you.

“The mission of the City of Shako-pee is to provide the opportunity to live, work, and play in a commu-nity with a proud past, promising future, and small-town atmosphere within a metropolitan setting.”
— City of Shakopee mission statement
Since 1853, Shakopee has been the seat of Scott County, and it’s now a hub for a variety of government activities. The Scott County Government Center, conveniently located in down-
town Shakopee, is the place to go for all licensing and motor vehicle needs, permits, passports and birth, death and marriage certifi cates. In the same building complex, you’ll fi nd the Scott County Courthouse and the Scott County Board of Commissioners. The County Board is made up of fi ve commissioners representing the cities and townships of Scott County
Just a few blocks from the Scott County Government Center is Shakopee City Hall. Here you can get information on building permits, local elections, economic development opportunities and so much more. Other city services, such as public works, engineering and the Shakopee Police Department can be found just a mile east on Gorman Street. City services are provided by a staff of approximately 130 full-time, 160 part-time and more than 300 seasonal employees. The city intends to move City Hall to the Gorman Street campus in the near future to create a “one-stop shop” customer service model for city residents.
The City of Shakopee is a “Plan A” city. This means that Shakopee operates on a weak mayor-council plan, so that administrative, as well as legislative authority, is the ultimate responsibility of the City Council unless the council has created an independent board. Residents are represented by the mayor and four City Council members. The mayor and each councilor have one vote each.
Rain held off for Memorial Day services at Veterans Memorial Park in Shakopee on Monday. Shakopee Boy Scout Troop 218 was part of the color guard and listened to guest speaker Mike Beard, Scott County commissioner from Shakopee. (Photo by Pat Minelli)

As Scott County continues to lead the state in popula-
tion growth, progress is evident throughout the community. Over the last several years, Scott Coun-ty has managed to keep its budget in check while still investing in its residents’ future: from the ac-quisition of new parks and green spaces to developing highly suc-cessful transit partnerships (the BlueXpress commuter line and the SmartLink transit cooperative), from the construction of two new mixed-use library facilities to in-stalling a high-tech fi ber optic ring, Scott County is truly committed to its new vision: “Where individuals, families, and businesses thrive.”Residents are encouraged to keep
current on County news through viewing Board meetings (avail-able online in “real time” and on-demand), visiting the website (www.co.scott.mn.us), tuning in to local government access cable for meeting coverage and other pro-gramming, following the county on Facebook and reading the award-winning resident newsletter (The Scott County SCENE). In addition, you can become more directly involved by volunteering with vari-ous community groups, serving on a citizen advisory committee, or by attending County board meetings and workshops, which are held on most Tuesdays at 9 a.m. (visit the website for up-to-date schedule information).

Welcome to the City of Sha-kopee! Whether you’ve
lived here your whole life or only a short while, you know Shakopee is a great place to call home. From its friendly downtown to metro-politan proximity, we’re a commu-nity that embraces our small-town roots while providing a wonderful quality of life for residents.
The citizens and businesses of Shakopee take great pride in our city. Founded in 1857 as a trading post along the Minnesota River, Shakopee has been home to Native Americans for thousands of years. In recent decades, the City has seen dramatic growth in popula-tion, businesses and amenities and we are dedicated to keep moving this community forward.
Located in “RiverSouth, Land of Big Fun,” Shakopee residents know how to have a good time. Right in our backyard, you’ll fi nd
some of the state’s most popular entertainment attractions, includ-ing Canterbury Park horseracing track and Valleyfair amusement park. The City’s outdoor aquatic park, SandVenture, is the place to be on warm summer afternoons, and with more than 1,300 acres of parks and 60 miles of trails, we’re a city of all seasons. Plus, our close proximity to Minneapolis-St. Paul provides easy access to the ameni-ties of a large metropolitan area.
Shakopee is truly a multi-facet-ed city. Home to one of the state’s largest business parks, Shakopee’s strong commercial-industrial tax base helps keep property taxes low and housing affordable. Our princi-pal industries include manufactur-ing, technology and hospitality/entertainment. Several new busi-nesses have recently announced plans to locate in Shakopee, includ-ing Amazon, AmerisourceBergen
and Polaris, while many of our long-standing businesses are investing in expansions and new buildings.
Our riverfront is particularly enjoying a surge of redevelopment and improvements. This economic diversity offers residents the op-portunity to work where they live.
Because, at its heart, Shakopee is a wonderful place to raise a fam-ily. The community offers excellent public and private schools that of-fer high-quality educational oppor-tunities from pre-K to adult. The growing Shakopee School District serves more than 7,600 students in 11 buildings. The area is served by a comprehensive medical cam-pus, St. Francis Regional Medical Center, and top-notch health care professionals. In 2014, the Min-neapolis VA opened a community-outreach clinic in Shakopee.
We’re also a civic-minded com-munity, home to the state’s larg-
est Jaycees club and numerous service organizations. The Shako-pee Diversity Alliance celebrates the City’s many strong cultural ties while our churches provide a place for worship and fellowship. Whatever your age, hobby or rec-reational interest, you’ll fi nd a way to get involved.
I hope you enjoy living in Sha-kopee as much as I do. If you have any questions or would like more information about Shakopee, our City staff would be pleased to as-sist you. Please visit us online at www.ShakopeeMN.gov, call us at 952-233-9300 or stop in at City Hall, 129 Holmes St. S.

A number of dental, chiropractic, eye and medical clinics — including St. Francis Regional Medical Center — can be found in Shakopee.
St. Francis serves as a major area medical hub where patients can receive hospital care, emergency help, birthing services and specialty care. Some of the medical center’s specialty care includes advanced dermatology, diabetes education, orthopedics, urology, oncology and sleep diagnostics. St. Francis Medical Center is especially known for it’s Cancer Care Center.
When it comes to mental health care options, Shakopee is home to several private practices along with a variety of support groups, many of which are held at or hosted by St. Francis Medical Center. From cancer and heart disease support groups to parent resource classes and fitness clubs, there is something for everyone in Sha-kopee.
Don’t forget about the many fi tness and wellness options, too, in-cluding paid membership gyms and the Shakopee Community Center.
The Shakopee City Council ordered a major renovation on the Community Center that will bring a two-sheet ice arena complex, an indoor aquatics park, an indoor playground, an expansive exercise area, a senior and teen center and much more to the Shakopee community. With all the new improvements on the horizon, there are many ways to get healthy in Shakopee.

Shakopee is a great place to relax, catch a show, pick up a new hobby or spend time with family.
Perhaps Shakopee’s most stand-out feature is the abun-dance of parks and trails within city limits. The city of Shakopee, Scott County, Three Rivers Park District and the state Depart-ment of Natural Resources all maintain parks and trails in the area, with events and activities available in every season.
“I love taking my son out to the parks and trails. It makes Shakopee a great place to live,” said resident Javier Avalos.
In Huber Park, centrally located in Shakopee’s downtown, take the whole family out to the annual Derby Days festival, held at the end of July. With oodles of food trucks and stands, as well as live performances, a beer garden and a popular “kid-way” of infl atable obstacle courses, every one in the family will fi nd something to do over the weekend event. At Quarry Lake Park, Shakopee’s newest gem, catch the Shakopee Prior Lake Water Ski Team perform, or enjoy the picturesque lakeside scenery.
Shakopee’s parks and recreation department also has a slew of classes, clubs, sports and activities for all levels of learners and athletes to participate in. Whether you want to join in on pick up basketball, play cards, or learn a new dance, there’s a class that’s sure to fi t your interests.
For those with acting or DIY talents, River Valley Theatre Com-pany community theater group has roles for all ages both on and off stage. RVTC puts on plays, readings and workshops all year round and is a great way to be involved in the community.
Looking to cool off? Head over to SandVenture water park, which has a 300-foot waterslide, along with two smaller slides and a unique sand-bottom chlorinated pool.
There’s always something to see and do in Shakopee!

RIPE WITH LIFE
Quality of life is such an important aspect to consider when it comes to settling down and making someplace your home. You
don’t have to look far to see that Shakopee residents are happy and content with their quality of life, especially considering that residen-tial development has surged ahead in recent years.
Today, nearly 40,000 people call Shakopee home — making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the Twin Cities metro area.
The community offers both private and public schools, which work together to provide a good foundation for children. The Sha-kopee School District serves more than 7,400 students in Shakopee, Savage, Prior Lake and surrounding townships. The district has fi ve elementary schools for grades kindergarten through fi fth grade, a sixth grade center, two junior high schools for grades 7 through 9 and one high school for grades 10 through 12.
The district also offers a variety of early childhood programs from infants to preschool families; district offi cials are planning to expand the early childhood programming for the 2015-16 school year.
“The city and the school district are always expanding. Not just in terms of numbers of students or residents, but in programming and amenities too. We’re often partnering to bring more to residents,” said Shakopee Parks and Recreation Director Jamie Polley.
The city is ripe with resources for senior citizens, as well, two senior living developments with a third on the way. The city’s new Community Center will feature a senior center, with programming like card games and senior exercise groups for Shakopee’s elders.

SCOTT COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
An exhibit opening in November 2015 features James Thompson’s Vietnam photographs. (Photo courtesy of the Scott County Historical Society)
BY KATHLEEN KLEHR
The Scott County Historical Society (SCHS) is all about
preservation, education, and ac-cess to information. We provide opportunities for cultural heritage celebration; pathway for citizen-ship; education opportunities; opportunities for teachers to meet Minnesota teaching benchmarks; internships for students; a com-munity gathering space; tourism dollars; volunteer opportunities; a venue for creating connections; opportunities for the public to connect with their community; space for military families and reminders for why people serve; a
healing space; space to ease daily stress and loneliness; an extensive research library; and a profession-ally run artifact repository. SCHS has a little something for everyone.
In November 2015, the SCHS will host two events focused on the Vietnam war.
“Vietnam: A Window to War.” From 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 there will be an Exhibit Reception & Interview for James Thompson’s photographic exhibit on Vietnam.
From 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 12, local author Kim Heikkila will discuss her book, “Sisterhood of War: Min-nesota Women in Vietnam.”

“See the river, ride the rides, fi nd a new job and fi nd yourself staying a lifetime.”
- Ryan Koch
From “big box” retail stores to locally owned shops downtown, Shakopee has everything a person could need. Home to big
names like Target, Walmart, Goodwill and Kohl’s, Shakopee also has specialty shops and local merchandise throughout town. The city has everything from thrift stores for adults and children, electronics stores, e-cigarette shops and sporting good stores.
Shakopee Chamber of Cmmerce and Visitors Bureau president Angie Whitcomb says Shakopee’s a great place to “go antiquing or shopping at some of our amazing boutiques and shops.”
And new shops are opening up all the time. Right in the heart of downtown, great specialty stores like For the Journey and Driscoll Board Shop cafe have unique offerings you can’t fi nd anywhere else in the metro.
For more extensive shopping, the closest indoor mall is a short 15-minute drive across the river to Eden Prairie.
Many large corporations call Shakopee home, as well. Shutterfl y, Inc., opened a brand new warehouse and distribution center in the Dean Lakes offi ce-industrial park in August 2014, while Rahr Malting and My Pillow also make their home in Shakopee.
Downtown Shakopee has had even more life breathed into it recently with help from Main Street Shakopee, a group dedicated to revitalizing the downtown business district. (File photo)

You can now keep backyard chickens in Sha-kopee! Residents may only keep up to fi ve hens in a backyard coop–no roosters allowed. Check the city’s website to learn about the regulations under city ordinance.
LOVING LASSIEWhen we say Shakopee has something for the whole family, that
includes your favorite furry, four-legged or feathered friends.Specialty stores like PetsMart and Chuck & Don’s will keep you well supplied for all your pets’ needs. Shakopee is also home to three high quality, locally run veterinary clinics.
Most common pets are permitted to be owned in Shakopee. Dogs are required to be licensed through the city. Shakopee has recently allowed backyard chickens to be kept in town as well, although they must be kept outside in coops.
But dogs defi nitely have a special place in Shakopee at the new dog run in Southbridge Community Park. With 10 acres of off-leash fun through a picturesque oak savanna, you can ensure Fido and Spike will be tuckered out after a long day of fun. There’s even a fenced, half-acre section of the park especially for small dogs.
“Southbridge is really one of the unique gems in Shakopee,” said the city’s parks and recreation director Jamie Polley.
