Barcelona will receive 2, 6 million vis-

has always been facing the sea but is
now more than ever making a living
from what the sea provides: tourism and
visitors ready to enjoy a city, unique in

We are well prepared and delighted to

The millions of visitors that each year

reasons, as Barcelona has many faces;
its cultural, historical, the cradle of great
important people representing all kind of

the expectation of the visitors with its
wide range of museums, although we
can say that the city itself is one great
museum, where you can wander around
its many quarters; enjoy its generosity
and its peaceful and discreet inhabitants.
We cannot talk about Barcelona without
mentioning its world famous gastronomy;
this city is a melting pot of restaurants,

The Sardana is the dance more repre-

The Sardana is a popular dance consid-ered the national dance of Catalonia. Its
name may refer both to the dance thatruns or the music. This is a collectivedance done by men and women; theylink her hands forming circles tappingwith their feet the strains of the song.
To enjoy this Catalan dance, whichbecame popular in the late nineteenthcentury, an unknown number of peopleform a circle facing the centre, dancingto the right and left with a fairly steadytempo, at times slow and other livelier.
This dance is more complex than itseems, considering that the dancersmust count the number of steps theymake, they also have to identify thechanges of rhythm and volume of thesong to interpret it correct ly. But if in themiddle of your route you meet a groupof people dancing it, be attentive to thesteps and do not hesitate to join the cir-cle. You will be welcome!

But Antoni Gaud in his legacy left
many more creations that give prestigeto the streets of Barcelona, starting with
one of its most famous landmarks onPaseo de Gracia, the Casa Mila, alsoknown as La Pedrera. It is the last civilwork designed by the artist, who oncereceived a lot of criticism due to the un-dulating original stone facade and thepraised iron decorations of balconiesand windows. Curiously, these elementsso criticized at the beginning have madethe building a monument and gained adeserved worldwide recognition.
Continuing our route along the Paseode Gracia, on the right we nd the Casa
Batll, considered one of the most crea-tive and original work of the Catalan ar-
chitect, with its wide variety of shades ofgreen, red and blue all over the facade.
Finally, it is essential to mention themost valued and internat ionally rec-ognized work by Antonio Gaudi: theSagrada Familia, which is also the mainrepresentative of the Catalan Modern-
ism. Please note that this basilica is oneof Spains most visited monuments, and
you will nd it surrounded by hordes of
tourists shooting away with their camer-as from every poss ible angle at any timeof year. Although its not yet nished,
and projections suggest that it will not
be completed before the year 2026,it is still fascinating to contemplate itsmarvellous structure, its decoration and
shapes inspired by nature and carefullykept in every detail. It cannot be com-pared to any other archi tectural work inthe world.

built by and for the people.
If you walk in the Ribera quarter of Bar-celona, the place where you can nd the
most bohemian atmosphere and magicalcity, Santa Maria del Mar will surprise yousuddenly standing in front of you.
From W2 Barcelona, we strongly rec-ommend, even if you have only a fewhours to visit the city, to go to this placeand lose yourself in these beautifulstreets surrounding the church, let your
imagination go to the Barcelona of theMiddle Ages, where a group of workersbegan to lay the rst stone of the basili-ca of Catalan Gothic style, in 1329 which
will be completed in less than 55 years.
We can ensure that the work belongedexclusively to the entire population of thela Ribera, as they were responsible to theconstruction for the material; the bastaix-os professionals, who were volunteered, transported the stones from the moun-tain of Montjuc.

Among the noisy and t ireless streets of
the old city, there are quiet parks thatwill make you forget, for a moment, thefrenetic speed of the city. The CiutadellaPark is certainly a paradigmatic exam-ple of this peace that we need during allcultural visit.
Located in the area of Ciutat Vella, thisnineteenth-century public park is placedin a triangle limited by the train stationEstaci de Frana, the Arc de Triomfand the Olympic Village.
There are 10 different entries to thepark, and they are all necessary giv-en the size of the park. It offers 17.42

the extension of the zoo, the number ofhectares amounts to 31.
If we go back in time, we will nd that
the past of the park is closely linked

Barcelona, conocida por su gran
valor arquitectnico y cultural, debe

Historia de Barcelona History of Barcelonawelcome2barcelona
Barcelona, famous for its great ar-
chitectural and cultural value, owes
all its virtues to the numerous civili-
sations that have lived in and left i ts
mark on the city over many centuries.
The city and its history
offer a unique experience. The history
of Barcelona stretches back well over4000 years, from the late Neolithic pe-riod, with the rst remains found in theterritory of the city until today. The originof its people is in the Iberian villages,Carthaginians, Romans, Jews, Visig-oths, Muslims and Christians. Althoughit is true that there were earlier civiliza-tions, the real expansion of the city tookplace during the Roman period. Fromits rst moments of splendour, the citywould become one of the main ports ofthe western Mediterranean and duringthe Middle Ages it dominated the oth-er Catalan counties and became one ofthe most important cities of the Crownof Aragon. After the union of Castile andAragon, Barcelona held a position ofgreat importance in the political, eco-nomic social development of Spain.
What can we say of Barcelona today?Without a doubt, the most importanturban development of Barcelona city, the project of expansion (Eixample)created by Ildefons Cerd, took placeduring the XIX century. He proposedThe Cerd Plan an orthogonal designbetween the Montjuc Mountain and
the river Besos, with a rectilinear streetlayout and a northwest-southeast orien-tation of 20 metres and another south-west/north-east orientation parallel tothe coast and the Sierra de Collserola. There were a number of well denedoctagonal blocks, of 113.3 square feet. The plan envisaged the construction ofseveral main avenues: the Diagonal, theMeridiana, the Parallel, the Gran Via andthe Paseo of San Juan, and some largesquares at their intersections: Tetuan,Glorias, Espanya, Verdaguer, Letamendiand Universitat. All this is visible today, and Barcelona has one of the worlds
best urban plans.
At present, events such as the Olym-
pic Games of 1992 and the UniversalForum of Cultures have put Barcelonaon the map as a globally recognizedand praised city, an important focus fortourists and culture, as well as a nan-cial and commercial centre.

When did BCN became oneo the cities with most touristattractions and why?
The Olympic games has without adoubt, been the most determining fac-
tor, that totally changed the tourism inBarcelona. Both the number of visitorsand the worldwide popularity of the ci tyhave signicantly changed since 1992.
You can go anywhere in the world andsay you are from Barcelona, and every-one will know where it is and they willtell you that Barcelona is a fantastic citythat they would love to visit, if they ha-vent already visited it. Barcelona is one
of the most loved cities in the world andalso one of the most visited.
Has the attraction that Barcelonaoers and that is sought by touristschanged over the last 25 years?
Barcelona still maintains its essence: thebeach, its cultural offer and the gastron-omy, the old quarter, the modernism, themodern architecture ... We have learnedto make a better use of what we have, tomake the most of it and sell it better.
How is the tourism o Barcelonadeveloping? What strong pointwill the tourism oer to attractmore tourists?
The tourism in Barcelona is developing
the same way as in the rest of the world.People stay less days and spend lessmoney, as a resul t of the low-cost tour-ism. They are more pro-active, and bet-ter at planning their holidays, they makeplans that t what they want. Before
they may have been guided by agen-cies, today most tourists will have usedGoogle to nd out what to do. Whats
our strong point? We offer quality, andhave a large range of activities to keepeverybody satised.
What kind o tourism is comingto Barcelona? How you woulddefne the typical tourist thatvisits Barcelona?
I dont think it can be dened as one
single type: you will nd as many differ-ent kinds of tourists as there are people. We will surely come across the classictourist that has come for the party, thesangria and the paella, but theres a lso
the tourist who prefers to enjoy themodernist architecture, or comes to seeBara playing or to soak up the Catalanand Mediterranean culture. Sometimes
they prefer to do a bit of everything: theSagrada Famlia in the morning, the WaxMuseum in the afternoon and to see aBara match in the evening followedby some drinks. Barcelona, as I said, has something to offers every tourist. That said, they all coincide in taking astroll down the Rambla, one of the mostbeautiful boulevards in the world.
Could you cite some recchanges to encourage thists to visit the Wax Muse
The Wax Museum is a classcity, not only for its unique scencollection of nearly 300 gures
for its nineteenth-century buimust be seen. It is a recurrent scruise visitors as it is only 5 minfrom the harbour and we have aoffer: an essential museum, ocountrys most famous bars (E

There are always things to ima city, all citizens know that. Ishould ght the f raud in touris
