BRISBANE: QueenslandPremier Anna Bligh hasreactivated the state disastermanagement group as twopossible cyclones threaten tohit within days of each other.

Cyclone Anthony could in-tensify from a category oneto a category three storm andhit the Burdekin Coast, be-tween Cardwell and Bowen,on Monday, the Bureau ofMeteorology says.

Meanwhile, it’s feared atropical low about 1500kmnortheast of Vanuatu couldbuild into a category four

cyclone and hit north ofGladstone on Thursday.

‘‘In a worst-case scenario,Queensland could see twotropical cyclones cross thecoast in a matter of three orfour days,’’ Ms Bligh said.

The Premier admitted thenews was grim as the statewas just beginning to recoverfrom the devastating heavyrains and floods.

‘‘We’re battening down thehatches once more, but wehope both these weather for-mations disappear out at seasomewhere,’’ she said.

‘‘But on all current model-ling, the bureau’s best advice

is that both of these cycloneswill cross the Queenslandcoast next week, and we haveto be ready for thatpossibility.’’

Ms Bligh said the weatherbureau was more concernedabout the second system .

It was likely to bring sub-stantial rainfall and possiblymore flooding across the st-ate. Ms Bligh urged people toremain calm, but to beprepared.
