Volunteer Geographic

Information (VGI)

However, the largely damages caused by the disasters:

• affects the coexistence of people,

• brings difficulties to the EAs, and

• delay the response processes.

That necessarily needs to be fast and reliable, because a

slow response based on incorrect data can lead to

serious consequences, such as loss of lives. (Ostermann and Spinsanti, 2011; Erkine and Gregg, 2012)

Volunteer Geographic

Information (VGI)

"Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) is

defined as a collection of digital spatial data produced

by individuals and non-formal institutions

using appropriate tools to gather and

disseminate their views and

geographical knowledge

on the web."

(Goodchild, 2007)

Gamification

● “The use of game design elements in non-

game contexts”

● Restrict definition of elements of game: only

the most used (Deterding et al., 2011)

Research Question

● How use concepts of gamification and

volunteers’ data to improve the resilience

against natural disasters?

Gamification-based Social

Collaborative Architecture (GSCA)

GSCA – Communication

● Synchronous and asynchronous chat (individual

or in group)

● Forums, groups and communities creation to

discussion of commom interest issues

GSCA – Profiles

Content recommendation according to profiles

● Click-stream

● Content creation

● Challenges/gameplay and volunteers retention

GSCA – Missions

GSCA – Knowledge

● Disasters georeferencing

● Surveys

● Volunteers network

● Communities

● Georefenced elements creation

Evaluation and Analysis

● Voluntary in Action

● Implementation of the GSCA

● Web platform to involve citizens with the prevention and

mitigation of natural disasters

Conclusions

● VGI present as an alternative to improve the quality

and amount of knowledge related with disasters.

● Gamification can improve the knowledge produced by

communities.

● The architecture of GCSA could help in this context.

Future Works

● Interface and usability analysis with users.

● Implement techniques of machine learning to improve the

“gamification” between the users.

● Identify new approaches to support the creation of

knowledge.
