Introduction to Networks

Network:

A collection of computers connected together via communication devices and transmission media.

Network node:

A computer or device within a network

Network Examples

Introduction to Networks

Network types:

Local area network (LAN)

Metropolitan area network (MAN)

Wide area network (WAN)

Introduction to Networks

Local area network (LAN):

A network that connects computers and devices in a limited geographical area, such as a room, a building, or campus.

Examples:

Your computer and printer at home

Computers and devices at work

Wireless network on campus (WLAN)

Introduction to Networks

Metropolitan area network (MAN):A network that connects LANs in a metropolitan area, such as county, town, or city. It handles the bulk of communications across a metropolitan area.

Examples: State of Pennsylvania has a MAN connecting diverse state agencies within the state capital.

Introduction to Networks

Wide area network (WAN):

A network that covers a large geographic area, such as a city, a state, a country or the world.

Examples:

Internet is the world’s largest WAN.

Introduction to Networks

Internet:A wide area network (WAN) that covers a world wide geographic area.

World Wide Web (WWW):A library of information available to anyone connected to the Internet.

Introduction to Networks

Network architecture:The way in which computers and devices communicate to each other within a network.

Network architecture types: Peer-to-PeerClient/Server

Introduction to Networks

Client/Server Architecture:

A network in which a computer known as “server” is in charge of providing information and services to other computers known as “clients”.

PDLib: Client/Server Architecture

Introduction to Networks Client/Server Architecture

Server: Controls access to the network services.Provides storage space for programs, data, and web sites. Also known as “host computer”.

Client:Computer, cell phone, or PDA that requests services to the server, following predefined rules and procedures.

Network Standards

Network standard:A set of guidelines that specify the way in which computers and devices communicate with each other within a network, in terms of speed, media, physical cables, and technology used.

Main network standards:ANSIIEEE

Network Protocols

Network protocol:A set of guidelines that specify the way in which two devices communicate with each other within a network, in terms of data format, coding schemes, and error handling.

Main network protocols:EthernetToken ringTCP/IP802.11 (WiFi)BluetoothIrDA
