A necessary step for Christmas: overcome fear!
"Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home…”
A word of assurance that God directs to all of his chosen ones is "do not be afraid".
Bible characters: Abraham, Daniel, Zechariah, Peter, Mary Magdalene, Mary and Joseph and
many others heard this phrase: "Do not be afraid."
As of today, we can hear it.
Today, as we approach Christmas, in this fourth weekend of Advent, the mystery of love has a
special significance for our community.
We all have many reasons to be afraid: fear of terrorism, fear of flying, fear of AIDS, fear of
drunken husband, fear of job loss, fear of prison, fear of death ...
Joseph was afraid. According to the Book of Numbers he should have led Mary to trial while
pregnant.
God does not want us to remove this fear, which is natural and with which we must live.
There is a fear that can only be overcome with a perfect love. And the perfect love is what we
are celebrating on Christmas Day, that of Emmanuel, God with us, God made flesh, born of a
woman after nine months, breast fed from a woman and betrayed with a kiss ...
The vanquished fear by God with us that brings us salvation
The Gospel is not a cure for simple fears, but to heal the fears that destroy our relationship
with God.
Christian life is an effort to love as Jesus loved us. The only way to achieve that is called:
Trust.
At Christmas God trusts Mary, trust Joseph, he trusts the apostles, and today he is trusting us.
If God trusts us, we also must offer our confidence.
Celebrating Christmas on the 25th is not the end of our fears, but it can be the beginning of a
new love.

Fr. Andrés Arango Pastor
