ORIOLE VOLLEYBALL WINS CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

After dominating opponents all season long, the Lady Oriole Volleyball team validated their stature as outright Tri-Rivers champs by winning the conference tournament last Saturday. "We got a great team performance for this tournament. There wasn't a player out there today that didn't give 100% for their team and that includes our sidelines”, said Coach Howard. After qualifying to play Saturday with wins at home on Thursday against Lisbon and Maquoketa Valley, Springvillle first faced Bellevue Marquette and did away with them, 21-11 and 23-21. North Linn was their second opponent of the day and they beat them 25-14 and 25-18. Calamus Wheatland won their way to the championship bracket and the O’s beat them 25-19 and 25-15 to win the title! When speaking of the girls efforts, Coach Howard said, “There were some great individual performances today and again showed we have a lot of weapons when we execute efficiently. Our team once again showed how mentally and emotionally tough and focused they can be when games go back and forth. I'm proud of the leadership of this team”. Leadership indeed, the coaching staff has the girls in prime position to continue playing their best and the team has responded. Springville finishes the regular season with a number five ranking in state polls. Regional action is under way and after a first round bye, the Orioles will host Iowa Mennonite on Tuesday in second round action. Machovec is the place to be, first serve is at 7pm and it’s not a bad idea to come early—the pre-game warm ups alone are an attraction not to be missed! (Photo courtesy of Rachel Scriver)

ORIOLE FOOTBALL PICKS UP THIRD WIN IN A ROW

The O’s are looking to finish strong this season and with just one regular season game to go, the guys are playing hard nosed football. On the road at West Central last week, Springville battled a scrappy Blue Devils squad to earn their third win in a row and their fourth on the year with the 35-22 victory. Defense was the name of the game and Springville was the dominant team that night. West Central was able to rush for just 27 yards in the game and scored all their points in the third quarter when they came out of the half with a surge. There was more than a consecutive win on the line as the O’s needed the W to have a chance at the post season and with the win earned a playoff spot. The West Central victory moves the guys to 4-5 overall and an even 3-3 in the district. The O’s await a struggling Cedar Valley Christian team on Friday. The Huskies are 0-6 in district competition, 1-7 overall. Kick off is at 7pm and it will be Senior Night so join us for some hard nosed football and some appreciation for our letter winners. Let’s Go O’s! (Senior Matt Carson had his hands full with this Blue Devil “Giant”, but his block held for an Oriole gain on the play)

REGIONAL VOLLEYBALL COMES TO MACHOVEC It’s a show of respect and recognition a teams accomplishments when granted a first round bye in post season play. Springville will host Iowa Mennonite on Tuesday, October 27. Game time is 7pm so mark your calendars, save your al-lowance and join us for the beginning of the one and done portion of the 2015 volleyball season!

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK… There’s some pretty wild mascots out there and this week we look at Robstown, Texas. The city has a population of nearly 13,000 people and just one public high school. Now Robstown is called the home of Texas Hold ‘Em Poker so you’d think that perhaps their mascot might apply toward the card game but it doesn’t. Their athletic teams compete as “The Cottonpickers”. Their colors are red and white and their athletic programs are the usual; football, basketball, cross country… So when you hear someone say “You Cottonpicker” you know they must be from Robstown, Texas!

THE FAMOUS AMONG US—OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT... Now call me silly, but there are some people who walk among us, and they turn a head or two. And heads turn because they remind us of someone from time to time. This week let’s take a look at Springville Mom and Volleyball Coach Tiel Howard. Doesn’t she look just like TV personality Ricci Lake? I mean which of these lovely ladies is the real Tiel Howard? You be the judge!

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… This week we have some pretty interesting match-ups in high school, college and the pro’s: Central City at Turkey Valley Wartburg at Luther Texas Tech at Oklahoma Philadelphia Eagles at Carolina Panthers Choose your winners and for the tie-breaker, predict how many points Baylor will score on Iowa State Saturday. This week’s winner came down to the tie-breaker. Many of you were 3 for 4 but Joel Rochleau was the one who chose the Alabama/A&M game to be the highest scoring game and so he is the champ this time around! Thanks for playing and have a great week.
