OBSTÁCULOS El profeta Ezequiel, san Pablo y el Señor Jesús tienen algo en común en las lecturas de la Sagrada Escritura de hoy. Todos encontraron obstáculos en su ministerio. Eze-quiel fue llamado para que profetizara a los israelitas, con-vertidos en “un pueblo rebelde” (Ezequiel 2:4). San Pablo relata cómo se le ha metido una “espina clavada en mi carne” (2 Corintios 12:7). El Señor Jesús no puede realizar demasiados milagros en su tierra natal. OBSTACLES

The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture read-ings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we ex-perience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is suf-ficient for you, for power is made perfect in weak-ness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En los calendarios antiguos se celebraba la memoria de san Cristóbal el día 10 de este mes. Pero, con la refor-ma del Concilio Vaticano II este pobre santo se quedó sin trabajo sólo por el hecho de no poder comprobar su exis-tencia. No fue que la reforma del Concilio Vaticano II qui-siera haber negado al pobre de Cristóbal ni a tantos otros santos que fueron quitados del Santoral Romano. Sólo buscaba hacer lugar para nuevos santos y beatos; y menos mal, porque eventualmente el Papa Juan Pablo II cano-nizó y beatificó a más de mil personas durante su pontifi-cado. Muchos de estos santos no son tan bien conocidos como nuestro amigo san Cristóbal. Aunque ya no está en el calendario eclesiástico, Cristóbal continúa en los tableros de muchos carros ofre-ciendo su servicio de protección para los automovilistas. Esta chambita la consiguió porque ayudaba a cruzar el río a personas en camino, hasta que un día le tocó cargar con el niño Dios. .TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightin-gale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply en-trenched in America that sisters could not wear their hab-its in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to mar-vel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fear-less. After the war, sisters could appear in public every-where in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.”

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Is Paul serious? Can you imagine being content with “weaknesses, insults, hardships, and persecutions?” (2Cor 12:10) Paul never specifies what that “thorn in the flesh” was. I used to think it referred to a physical weakness, or disability. But some of the commentaries I’ve read say that it was a person who opposed Paul (think of a “thorn in my side.”) That opponent may have been a Christian who Paul did not want to mention by name. Paul could have been proud of all that God revealed to him, and of all that he accomplished in spreading the gospel. He sees that “thorn” as God’s way of keeping him humble. So instead he boasts about his weaknesses. He knows that all the good work he has done have been accomplished by Christ. So he accepted suffering, rejection, setbacks and per-secution because they helped him see how much Christ was doing through him. We can learn a lot from St. Paul. Remember how Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself. Paul loved himself in the good sense of accepting his faults and weaknesses. He was always aware that he once persecuted Christians. But that fault enabled him to experience God’s forgiveness. I usually try to avoid doing things that show my weaknesses. That means I might miss a chance to see how God can help. Sup-pose you don’t know how to swim, so you stay out of swim-ming pools. Of course, then you could never learn to swim. But if you get in the water and let someone teach you, you might just find yourself liking the water. St. Paul says that when he is weak, then he is strong. He knows that God will still work through him, showing God’s power to heal the sick and draw converts to Christ, in spite of Paul’s weaknesses. Paul did what he could to encourage others to follow Jesus, but he knew the results of his preach-ing and healing were up to God. When you think that you would fail at spreading the faith, remember Paul and give your weaknesses to God. Then see what he can do!

Solía pensar que se refería a una debilidad física o dis-capacidad. Pero algunos de los comentarios que he leído dicen que fue una persona que se opuso a Pablo (piense en una "espina en mi costado"). Ese oponente puede haber sido un cristiano que Pablo no quiso mencionar por su nombre. Keep it Cool Summertime activity, whether on the playing field or the construction site, must be balanced with measures that aid the body's cooling mechanisms and prevent heat-related ill-ness. People suffer heat-related illness when the body’s tem-perature control system is overloaded. The body normally cools itself by sweating but in extreme heat and high humid-ity the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal tem-perature. Heat-related deaths and illness like heat stroke, heat exhaus-tion, heat cramps, and heat rash are preventable, yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat. Historically, from 1979 to 1999, excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the United States. Those at greatest risk for heat-related illness include infants and children up to four years of age, people 65 years of age and older, people who are over-weight, and people who are ill or on certain medications. However, even young and healthy individuals can succumb to heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather. Air conditioning is the number one pro-tective factor against heat-related illness and death. The Best Defense is Prevention! Keep Cool and Use Com-mon Sense…. • Stay indoors as much as possible, in air conditioning (inspect, clean, or replace your AC filters regularly). If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library–even a few hours spent in air condi-tioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors reflect more of the sun’s energy than dark col-ors. • Drink plenty of fluids especially water, avoid drinks con-taining alcohol or caffeine. • Eat light meals spread out over the day. • Reduce activity levels and avoid getting sunburned, use protection if you must go out. • Use a buddy system, watch out for others and monitor those at risk. Don’t leave children, a frail elderly or disabled person or pets in an enclosed car, not even for a minute, as temperatures can quickly climb to dangerous levels.
