Welcome to HFOA…

The Houston Family Office Association (HFOA) was founded in January 2006 as an informal networking group for C-level Family Office Professionals

The group now includes many of Houston’s largest and wealthiest families and has evolved into a tight network of trusted friends and contemporaries

These family groups control large industrial and commercial businesses and have significant investments throughout Texas and around the world

Our quarterly educational events have included world class speakers from organizations including: Apollo, Goldman Sachs, Starwood, King Ranch, Halcyon, Dorchester, Crestline, Pinebridge, Department of Homeland Security, FLAG, Trusted Family, etc.

The Challenge for Family Office Professionals

Family Offices tend to be strictly private with limited opportunities for networking, idea sharing, pooling of buying power, etc.

No two Family Offices are alike, making areas of overlapping interest hard to determine

o SFO with operating business vs. without operating business

o SFO staffed internally vs. reliance on external service providers

o Asset allocators vs. full investment management capabilities

o Single generation SFO vs. multi-generational family offices

o Private jets, multiple homes, art collections, security issues, etc.

The limited number of Family Office networking groups that exist have poor local penetration, are expensive, and lack trusted relationships

For Further Information Contact HFOA Chairman: Marc Sharpe

Marc started his career as an Investment Banker for Wasserstein Perella & Co., Inc. in New York. From there he joined LJH Global Investments, Inc. and built an investment capability focused on asset allocation and manager due diligence for a number of successful private equity and hedge funds. In 1999, Marc moved to the UK and founded a venture capital incubator for The Protégé Group, where he successfully funded and launched four technology-related businesses. This experience led him to pursue greater operational experience, and upon returning to the USA, Marc joined Dell Inc. in Austin, TX, where he launched the digital entertainment strategy for the Consumer Division and rolled out the Dell kiosk program in over 200 malls throughout the country. A desire to take his operational experience back into the investment business, led Marc to join Goldman, Sachs & Co. in the Investment Management Division in Houston, TX. From there, he moved to the ‘buy-side’ and take a position as Portfolio Manager & Research Director for Galapagos Partners, L.P., a full-service multi-family office serving a select group of ultra-high net worth families. This allowed Marc to combine his passion for investing with his desire to build a business. After successfully growing the firm, and surviving the 2008 market crash with a positive net return, Marc was offered the opportunity to join SigmaBleyzer Investment Group to help develop a private equity business in the USA focused on a range of industries including Packaging, Business Services, Industrial Manufacturing, and Consumer Products. Most recently, Marc moved back into an investment management role with CAZ Investments, where he leads the firm's private equity business.

Marc is actively involved in the Houston community. He serves on the Board at the Holocaust Museum Houston Foundation, sits on the Investment Committee for two Houston based foundations, and serves as Chairman of the Houston Family Office Association. Marc is President of the Harvard Business School Club of Houston; and a member of the Houston Angel Network, the Greater Houston Partnership, The Association for Corporate Growth, and the Turnaround Management Association. Marc holds an MA from Cambridge University, an M.Sc. from Oxford University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School (where he was both a Fulbright and Harvard Scholar).

Twenty years of experience in strategy, finance, investment management, and operational roles. Based in Houston, TX, with an extensive global network that cuts across a wide range of industries, functions and geographies. Broad conceptual thinker with a track record of success in private equity, investment management, and family office businesses.
