Dear Parishioners: If last week, we heard the Pharisees motivated perhaps by even somewhat understandable anger at Jesus for challenging them so forceful-ly through a series of ever more pointed para-bles, asking Jesus a question (about paying tax-es to the Romans) that was arguably a rhetori-cal hand grenade, today we hear a more sin-cere question: “Okay, what’s the most im-portant commandment?” Here Jesus responds, “love God” and then “love your neighbor as yourself” and tells us that in this is summarized the whole law. And here actually the First Reading is more forceful in ex-plaining to us what the Scriptures meant here: “You shall not molest or oppress an alien” and “you shall not wrong any widow or orphan.” Why? “Because they will cry out to me and I will surely hear their cry … for I am compassionate.” We are all God’s children, all created by the same God. We simply have to be patient, compassionate to all, even to those who annoy us. No doubt this is not easy. But we simply need to try. This coming week, we will be cele-brating the Feast of All Saints. What a tragedy it would be for us to forego participat-ing in the Final Banquet that awaits us in Heaven simply because we could not stand spending Eternity with some brother or sister who an-noys us. -- Fr. Dennis

- P. Dennis

The Little Ones Living God’s Word

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

BALANCE

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This week we have in All Souls’ Day a commemoration that is linked to the Halloween customs. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday’s grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The “Day of the Dead” is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life’s sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchronize it with the Chris-tian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. The devout spend hours in the cemetery, and there is a lively sense of the com-munion of saints, the living and the dead. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

Today’s scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn’t always easy to main-tain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. Today Jesus reminds us of the necessity for both in the life of faith. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

First Reading — You shall not oppress an alien, for you yourselves were once aliens in Egypt. —(Exodus 22:20-26). Psalm — I love you, Lord, my strength. —(Psalm 18). Gospel — You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. —(Matthew 22:34-40).

INCLUSIVE LOVE Love of our neighbor is included in the love of God. —St. Thomas Aquinas NO FOOLING You may fool those who work above you; you may fool those who work around you; but you will rarely fool those who work under you. —Anonymous

Los Mas Pequeños Vivamos la Palabra

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

EQUILIBRIO

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY—a day that leads us to the heard of our Christian faith—leads us to mission! Your generosity on World Mission Sunday Supports the work of priests, religious and lay leaders in the Mission who share our faith with those most in need. This year we can even cat with our chief missionary, Pope Francis, and learn more about his missions and missionaries. Give this World Mission Sun-day.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

Each year several adults as well as children come to the church asking to be welcomed and accepted. We have a team that provides instruction (the RCIA team) but each person needs a Catholic friend as a role model, mentor and sponsor. The job is to show what Catholics do and to share why you are Catholic. There is no set number of meetings to attend, just a few Sundays where you are asked to stand up for the person but mostly it is about showing all the different ways we are Catholic to someone else. This year many of the adults expressed that they felt uncomfortable at mass. Could you make them comfortable by sitting next to them, showing them how to follow the missal? If you belong to a parish group, could you invite them to join you? It is this kind of example that forms the bonds. Could you commit to making a phone call, text or email weekly to check on someone? This is the care we want to offer to those interested in being Catholic. This is how we grow-one person at a time. If you interested or have questions, please contact Debbie Kamer at 714/871-9290.
