Introducción

El dicho de Mahatma Gandhi que

“la única manera en que Dios puede

atreverse a aparecer entre un pue-

blo hambriento es en la forma de ali-

mento” se hace realidad en esta mi-

sión claretiana de Ngaremara, entre

las comunidades ganaderas del Distri-

to de Isiolo, Kenia. Esto se ve con más

claridad si se considera todo lo que

significa la actividad misionera aquí.

En esta región la Iglesia Católica es co-

nocida por el apadrinamiento para la

educación, la perforación de pozos, la

construcción de dispensarios y hospi-

tales, la concesión de préstamos –ya

sea de animales o de dinero-.

Introduction

Mahatma Gandhi’s saying that

“to a starving people the only form

in which God can dare appear is in

the form of food” comes to life in

this new Claretian Mission of Ngare-

mara among the cattle-herding

communities of Isiolo District, Ke-

nya. This is especially so when one

considers the length and breadth

of what missionary activity means

here. In this region the Catholic

Church is known for sponsoring ed-

ucation, sinking boreholes, build-

ing dispensaries and hospitals, and

giving loans – be it in livestock or

in cash. And the question is asked

whether one is really a Catholic

priest if he cannot do these things.

The dawn of a new mission

Ngaremara Catholic mission is

one of the missions of the Catho-

lic Diocese of Isiolo. Isiolo belongs

to the arid and semi-arid regions of

Kenya marked by extreme draught.

The region is one of the poorest

in the country. The main causes of

this poverty are: frequent severe

draughts, inadequate water for do-

mestic and non-domestic use, low

agricultural production due to harsh

climatic conditions, lack of reliable

and lucrative markets for livestock

products, few employment oppor-

tunities, over dependency on relief

food and a livestock economy, non-

utilized resources, insecurity, eth-

nic clashes, illiteracy and a poor-

ly maintained infrastructure. The

Claretian Missionaries, who are al-

so working in other parts of Kenya

– Mombasa, Nairobi, and Ngong di-

oceses – took over the Ngaremara

mission on the 14th of June 2009 to

bring its vision of preferential option

to the poor to this arid region.

The Pastoral Realities

Our pastoral realities call for a

harmonious but urgent and sus-

tained evangelization of all aspects

of our life as a parish. Many of the

natives live outside the margins

of faith and still see the church as

Muzungu (White) or “father’s busi-

ness”. In our communities there are

many – especially among the men –

who, though baptized, have ignored

the faith for so long and have fallen

back to the traditional way of life.

It is generally understood that the

men do not bother with religion,

and to get them together one has

to slaughter a goat. Even for those

who come to church there is a dis-

orderly approach, among many, to

the sacramental life which tends to

make it lose meaning for those who

are aspiring to approach it in faith.

El amanecer de una nueva misión

La misión católica de Ngaremara

es una de las misiones de la dióce-

sis católica de Isiolo. Isiolo pertene-

ce a las regiones secas y semi-se-

cas de Kenia, caracterizadas por su

condición extrema de sequía. La re-

gión es una de las más pobres del

país. Las principales causas de esta

pobreza son: las frecuentes y seve-

ras sequías, la escasez de agua para

uso doméstico u otros usos, escasos

productos agrícolas por las duras

condiciones climáticas, falta de faci-

lidades fiables y lucrativas de mer-

cado de productos de ganadería, es-

casez de oportunidades de empleo,

excesiva dependencia de alimentos

de socorro y economía ganadera,

recursos desaprovechados, insegu-

ridad, conflictos que incluyen luchas

étnicas, analfabetismo y una infra-

estructura pobre y mal manteni-

da. Los misioneros claretianos, que

también trabajan en otras partes de

Kenia – diócesis de Mombasa, Nairo-

bi y Ngong – tomamos la misión de

Ngaremara el 14 de junio de 2009

con la intención de poner en prác-

tica nuestra opción preferencial por

los pobres en esta árida región.

Realidades pastorales

Nuestras realidades pastorales

exigen una evangelización armo-

nizada pero urgente y sostenida de

todos los aspectos de nuestra vida

como parroquia. Muchos de los na-

tivos viven fuera de los límites de

la fe y ven todavía a la iglesia como

Muzungu (Blanca) o “cosas del Pa-

dre”. En nuestras comunidades hay

muchas personas – hombres espe-

cialmente – que han ignorado la fe

por demasiado tiempo ya y otros

que, aunque han sido bautizados,

han vuelto a un modo de vida me-

ramente tradicional. Aquí ya es de

dominio público que los hombres no

se molestan por la religión y que,

para juntarlos, uno tiene que de-

gollar una cabra. Aún entre aque-

llos que vienen a la iglesia se obser-

va que muchos se acercan a la vida

sacramental de una manera desor-

denada que tiende a hacerla perder

su significado a los ojos de los que

quieren acogerla con fe auténtica.

Conscientes de la verdad de que,

en efecto, si el Señor no constru-

ye la casa en vano se afanan los al-

bañiles, vemos que tanto la forma-

ción en la fe como la preparación de

evangelizadores son indispensables

para el florecimiento de esta misión.

Nevertheless, the increase in the

number of masses celebrated on Sun-

days has grown from 2 to 4, though

the greater numbers of our commu-

nities do not even have services cel-

ebrated in their centers once a year.

In response, we created Basic Chris-

tian Communities (BCC) whereby the

chosen leaders, after receiving es-

sential training on leadership in BCC,

are charged with the responsibility of

promoting the work of evangelization

and the celebration of the Sunday

services of the Word in their commu-

nities. This is accompanied by the pro-

motion of sodalities and, most impor-

tantly, the Christian Mothers (Catholic

Women Association), the Christian Fa-

thers (Catholic Men Association) and

the Youth and P.M.C. (Pontifical Mis-

sionary Children). Through these

groups, and the leadership training

they receive, the faith can be rejuve-

nated across board.

Hopes and Aspirations

of Evangelization

Aware of the truth that indeed

“if the Lord does not build the house

in vain do its builders labor”, forma-

tion of faith and evangelizers are in-

dispensable for the flowering of this

mission. We are aware of the most

urgent concern that a few catechists

are not enough for the enormous

task of evangelization of our mis-

sion parish with more than 28 Chris-

tian Communities. Against the back-

drop of a lack of suitable catechists

with the right motivation to evange-

lize, we are resolved to train, within

the next 3 years, up to 30 carefully

chosen agents of evangelization so

that they will always be a source of

availability as catechists. We are also

resolved to construct more places of

worship and to facilitate the move-

ment of the catechists by providing

them with motorcycles so they can

reach many of the communities in

the interior.

Deepening Catechesis

We are impelled by zeal to deep-

en the faith of the faithful in our mis-

sion, which has all the hallmarks

of areas of first evangelization that

have little knowledge of the faith.

and structural resources, this venture

cos catequistas no son suficientes

para la enorme tarea de la evan-

gelización de nuestra parroquia con

más de 28 comunidades cristianas.

Contra el telón de fondo de la fal-

ta de adecuados catequistas con la

motivación apropiada para evange-

lizar, nos resolvimos a entrenar, en

tres años, hasta unos 30 agentes de

evangelización escogidos y prepara-

dos meticulosamente de suerte que

se conviertan en una fuente de re-

clutamientos de catequistas.

Ahondar en la catequesis

Nos sentimos impulsados por el

celo de ahondar en la fe de los fie-

les de nuestra misión, que tiene to-

das las marcas de ser un área de

primera evangelización con poco

fundamento de lo que es la fe. Te-

niendo en cuenta el escaso material

que poseemos, los pocos recursos

materiales, humanos y estructura-

les, esta empresa demanda la uti-

lización de todos los instrumentos y

oportunidades disponibles. Por eso

nos meteremos en la enseñanza se-

manal del catecismo en las iglesias/

capillas, manyattas y escuelas ade-

más del catecismo normal que en-

señan los pocos catequistas que te-

nemos ahora. La Catequesis Bíblica,

dirigida especialmente a los niños y

jóvenes, se hará más atractiva por

medio de Concursos Bíblicos y Dra-

mas que atraerán a todos sin excep-

ción. Queremos consolidar a las Mu-

jeres, a los Hombres y a los Grupos

Jóvenes (CWA, CMA, CYO y PMC) a

través de seminarios mensuales en

los centros de zona. El catecismo

pre-bautismal anterior al bautismo

de infantes será racionalizado para

asegurar su seriedad con cateque-

sis preparatoria para los adultos que

quieren bautizar a sus hijos.

Celebración de la vida en Cristo

Es necesario dar un sentido de

dirección a nuestro pueblo en la re-

cepción de los sacramentos sin ha-

cer violencia a la fe de aquellos que,

con conciencia tranquila, han esta-

do recibiéndolos, aun cuando fuera

irregularmente, durante todos estos

años. Queremos preparar con inten-

sidad a parejas – especialmente pa-

rejas jóvenes – durante un período

no menor de 4 meses, con intención

de tener una celebración nupcial de

grupo en la parroquia en este año

2010, presidida por el Señor Obispo.

Hemos optado por una participación

activa de todos en la celebración re-

gular de los sacramentos, en cuan-

to sea posible, y aprovechar todas

las oportunidades que se presenten,

especialmente en la celebración de

Bautismos en los domingos, para

ahondar en la fe del pueblo.

calls for the utilization of all instru-

ments and opportunities at our dis-

posal. We will therefore embark on

weekly teaching of the Catechism in

the churches, manyattas (“church-

trees”1),and schools in addition to

the normal catechism taught by the

few catechists we presently have. Bi-

ble Catechesis, especially directed to

the children and the young people,

will be made attractive through Bi-

ble Quiz and Dramas which will at-

tract a variety of people. We want

to consolidate the Women, Men

and Youth Groups (CWA, CMA, CYO

& PMC) through monthly seminars

at the zone-centers. Pre-baptismal

catechesis prior to infant baptism

will be stream-lined to ensure seri-

ous catechetical preparation for the

adults who intend to baptize their

children.

Celebration of life in Christ

There is need to give a sense of

direction to our people in the recep-

tion of the sacraments without doing

violence to the faith of those who in

clear conscience have been receiving

it irregularly all these years. We in-

tend to intensively prepare couples –

especially young couples – for a peri-

od of not less than 4 months in order

to have a parish celebrated group

wedding in the year 2010 to be pre-

sided over by the Bishop. We opt for

an active participation of all by hav-

ing the celebration of Baptism on

Sundays to deepen the faith of the

people.

Socio-Economic Regeneration

Right from the start it was clear

that our missionary effort needed to

encompass the geo-socio-economic

reality of our region or else the

mission-parish would lack social

relevance in the face of the stark

reality of human deprivation and

suffering. We resolved to combine

the proclamation of faith with

human promotion. We hope that by

doing so we can help the people out

of poverty by making them aware

of income-generating activities and

the management of the resources

at their disposal. In this regard a lot

has been done in our mission parish,

thanks to the dedicated work of

previous missionaries.

Regeneración Socio-Económica

Desde el comienzo mismo estaba

claro que nuestro esfuerzo misione-

ro no puede menos de tener presen-

te la realidad geo-socio-económica

de nuestra región, o de lo contrario,

a la misión-parroquia le faltará rele-

vancia social frente a la dura realidad

de la privación y el sufrimiento hu-

manos.

Mientras que estamos activa-

mente involucrados en el programa

de apadrinamientos para la educa-

ción, el programa de sanidad, educa-

ción de niños físicamente discapaci-

tados, dormitorios para chicos y para

chicas, distribución de alimentos de

socorro, perforación de pozos, etc.,

ya es tiempo de evaluar cómo los

programas centrales han ido dando

sustento y ayudando a nuestro pue-

blo a salir de su constante depen-

dencia. Nos iremos centrando tam-

bién en aquellos que están fuera del

ámbito de nuestro programa de apa-

drinamiento escolar, para conside-

rar el apadrinamiento para el entre-

namiento en conocimientos técnicos,

dirigidos a capacitar a los muchos

jóvenes parados para encontrar un

sustento, por pequeño que sea, al fi-

nal de su educación primaria y se-

cundaria. Esto necesariamente tie-

ne que incluir la alfabetización de

las numerosas madres adolescentes

y jóvenes (Shangas) que han toma-

do el camino tradicional de vida. Nos

estamos interesando también en la

agricultura de regadío para mejorar

la seguridad del alimento y para usar

la granja de la misión como granja

modelo para nuestra comunidad ga-

nadera que no están familiarizados

con el trabajo de granja.

Conclusión

No cabe duda que con la incur-

sión de Claretianos en esta parte

del África Oriental, podemos decir

que nuestra experiencia misione-

ra es completa ahora. Con nuestras

florecientes parroquias en Kimara

(Tanzania), Kiembeni y Shanzu (Ke-

nia), Mbarara (Uganda), etc., una mi-

sión entre los pastores nómadas es

un buen equilibrio que nos presen-

ta como misioneros por excelencia.

Por muchos años la iglesia de Ngare-

mara ha dado pasos de gigante para

aliviar los males sociales y los sufri-

mientos del pueblo. Ahora más que

nunca durante el tiempo de transi-

ción desde que los sacerdotes Fide

Donum entregaron la Misión a los

misioneros Claretianos africanos, el

gran reto es asegurar que este tra-

bajo vital de promoción humana y

caridad continúe.

Desde el nacimiento hasta la muerte, los misioneros acompañan la vida de la comunidad.

Being actively involved in an

education sponsorship program, a

health program, the education of

physically handicapped children, a

boarding hostel for boys and girls,

relief food distribution, sinking of

boreholes, etc., it is time to take

stock to see how the core programs

have given livelihood and helped

our people emerge from constant

dependency. We will also be focus-

ing on those outside the sphere of

our education sponsorship program

to include technical training aimed

at empowering the numerous un-

employed and undereducated edu-

cated young people to have a live-

lihood. This definitely has to include

our numerous teenage and young

mothers (Shangas) who have taken

the traditional way of life. We are

seriously venturing into developing

irrigated agriculture to improve food

production and to use the mission

farm as a demonstration farm for

our shepherd community who are

not familiar with farm work.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that with the

foray of the Claretians in this part of

East Africa we can rightly say that

our missionary experience is now

complete. With our booming par-

ishes in Kimara (Tanzania), Kiem-

beni and Shanzu (Kenya), Mbara-

ra (Uganda), etc., a mission among

the nomadic shepherds makes for a

good missionary balance. For many

years the Church in Ngaremara has

made giant strides in alleviating the

social evils and sufferings facing the

people. Now, more than ever, since

the Italian Fide Donum priests have

handed over the mission to Clare-

tian Missionaries of African descent,

the big challenge is to ensure that

this vital work of human promotion

and of charity continues.
