Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at A.E. Mills Intermediate School. I am excited to start my third year as your principal and am looking forward to another fantastic year. The Mills Intermediate School educational team is committed to being a quality educational system providing the opportunity for all students to reach their potential. Our school goals are to maximize student achievement and to provide a safe and positive learning environment. We will focus on educating our students to communicate effectively, think critically and creatively, and to work together collaboratively. This planner includes some important information that will assist both the students and parents throughout the school year. SCHOOL RULESThe discipline program is based on the philosophy that:

SCHOOL HOURSSchool hours are from 7:55 AM until 3:15 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Wednesdays, school will be dismissed at 1:30 PM. Children should NOT arrive earlier than 7:30 AM or remain on campus later than 3:30 PM unless they are participating in a supervised activity. SCHOOL DOORS WILL OPEN AT 7:30 AM FOR STUDENTS. HOMEWORKHomework is assigned at Mills School nightly except for Fridays. It is necessary for our students to develop good work habits and practice concepts taught to them during daily lessons. We ask that parents work with the school and provide enough time and space for the child to do the assigned work. The student must remember to return the work to school the following day. Recent findings show:

1. Time spent doing homework affects school achievement and skills. Reading is one of the most important activities students can do to improve language arts, communication, and writing skills.

2. Students who do homework perform better academically in all subjects and all levels of study. 3. Homework will help develop skills in children that will help them become independent, motivated,

responsible, and successful adults.

USE OF TELEPHONETelephones in the office are available for student use only in emergencies. Please do not call the school to speak with teachers during instructional time. ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND CELL PHONES – GENERAL

Electronic devices including but not limited to games, cameras, radios, iPods, iPads, cell phones are not permitted to be used during school hours without the Principal’s permission. Use of any such device may result in the device being confiscated and held in the office until the owner’s parents pick up the device or until the end of the school year. Cameras are prohibited at all times unless pre-approved by an administrator. All student photos taken on campus during school hours are prohibited unless an administrator has approved the taking of photos. Students taking photos while on campus can face a possible suspension and/or expulsion depending upon the nature of the picture. Mills School, FLDUSD, and/or staff are not responsible for any lost or stolen electronic devices, including student cell phones.

ELECTRONIC/CELL PHONE DIRECTIVES Cell phones and personal electronics may NOT be used during school hours. Cell phones must be turned off during school hours. Texting or any kind of electronic messaging/posting is prohibited during school

hours. Students sending threatening, harassing, or inappropriate messages can face a

possible suspension and/or expulsion depending upon the nature of the message. Cell phones can only be used after school, in front of the main office. Photos taken at school without the Principal’s permission may not be published on

the Internet.

Las cámaras son prohibidas a todo momento al menos que sea aprobado por algún administrador. Esta estrictamente prohibido que los estudiantes tomen fotos durante el horario escolar al menos que algún administrador haya aprobado que lo hagan. Los estudiantes que tomen fotos dentro del territorio escolar pueden enfrentar una posible suspensión y/o expulsión dependiendo de la naturaleza de la foto. ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance at school is expected of all students. The student and his/her parents are responsible for him/her being in school every day that school is in session, unless he/she is properly excused by school officials. When a student misses all or part of a day, a written explanation from the student’s parent or legal guardian is required within 10 days. All cumulative absences, those excused and unexcused, will be counted in the Attendance Policy except those excused because of school business. Student absences will be monitored through the following policy.

4b.When a pupil has accrued absences due to illness, equal to or surpassing ten percent of the school days, from the date of enrollment to the current day, each subsequent absence must be verified by a physician, school nurse or other school personnel. Absences must be cleared daily, unless other arrangements are made with the school principal or designee. Failure to provide verification from the physician, school nurse or other school personnel will result in those additional absences being recorded as unexcused.

ASISTENCIASe espera la asistencia diaria a clases por parte de todos los estudiantes. Los estudiantes y sus padres son responsables de mandarlos a la escuela diariamente, al menos que su estudiante sea excusado apropiadamente por algún funcionario de la escuela. Absences and Tardies The only excused absences/tardies are for illness*or injury of the student, death in the immediate family, legal appointment for the student, i.e. court subpoena or jury duty (with appropriate documentation), justifiable personal issues, e.g. religious observance and medical appointments for the student. A student is considered tardy when he or she is not in his or her seat, standing in line, or in the teacher designated location when the class bell rings. Students arriving to school after school has started must report to the front office prior to reporting to class. Parents should stress the importance of regular attendance and being on time to school and class as part of responsible school behavior.

Ausencias y llegadas tarde Las ausencias y llegadas tarde solo son escusadas si el estudiante está enfermo, lastimado, muerte inmediata en la familia, cita legal del estudiante con documentación oficial, problemas personales justificables, de índole religiosa y citas de doctor para el estudiante. Los estudiantes que lleguen tarde a la escuela se tienen que reportar a la oficina antes de reportarse a su salón. Consequences for unexcused absences/tardies may include: Unexcused absences and tardies are calculated on a daily basis for Saturday School and disciplinary purposes.

If a student is absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than any 30 minute period during the school day on three occasions in one school year (or in any combination) he or she is considered TRUANT, as defined by Ed. Code section 48260(a).

Students that accumulate three or more unexcused absences and tardies (of 30 minutes or more) in a school year will be referred to Student Attendance Review Board (S.A.R.B), and will be referred for an initial SARB conference.

If a student is truant from school three or more additional times in one school year, he or she is considered HABITUALLY TRUANT as defined by Ed. Code 48262, and WILL be placed on a SARB contract and possibly referred to the district’s SARB/Court referral process.

Student Attendance Review Board (S.A.R.B) The mission of the School Attendance Review Board (S.A.R.B) is to help students stay in school, attend school regularly and promote to the next grade. The primary function of S.A.R.B is to reduce the truancy rate, increase school attendance and keep students and families out of the court system.

Students are referred to S.A.R.B. under any or all of the following circumstances:1. If a student accumulates 3 or more unexcused absences. 2. If a student is absent or late more than 30 minutes from class, 3 or more times.

Students and parents referred to S.A.R.B. may be placed on a S.A.R.B. contract. Students and parents placed on a contract are required to do their best to meet directives and sanctions which are explained in this section. If students and parents fail to abide by the terms as required by S.A.R.B. and/or the S.A.R.B. attendance contract, the students and parents may be referred to the local Municipal Court for legal action.

Perfect Attendance Students who attend regular school full time, have no recorded absences, for the entire school year will qualify for various perfect attendance incentives, including an end-of-the-year activity. Saturday School attendance will replace any full-day(s) missed during regular school hours, thus clearing the absence from the student’s record.
