NOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS.[BY “PAYNATOR”]

I met out at Canning Park on Saturday the well known Queensland trainer, Alfred Shaw, whose acquaintance I had previously met while on a visit to Victoria. Shaw learned his business in Victoria in good stables, and then started on his own account in Bathurst and other N.S.W. country districts. He gravitated to Queensland, trying Brisbane first, and then went north to Charters Towers. In that town he first got hold of Orme, who was reported to have broken down. Shaw bought him out in a month’s time, and won a race with him. He raced Orme twice in one day each month, and won seven races. No trainer has been able to get a race out of him since. Shaw was then entrusted with the training of Physician, the champion sprinter of Bananaland (now that the long-legged Babel has gone to Victoria). Physician was a horse with one foreleg greatly bowed. He was first used as a station hack and showed speed by winning at a “grass fed” meeting. When Shaw first got hold of him he was doing no good in sprint races at 7st. and under, but under his care Shaw won eleven races with him and when he let him go Physician was up in the 10st. 7lb. division in mile and a quarter races. War Queen was another trained by Shaw after she had proved a failure in North Queensland, although she was a good mare down south. Shaw won five races with her and sold her for three times what he gave for her. Among numerous high-class references which Shaw holds are those from Mr. R. Russell, Mayor of Charters Towers and secretary of the local Jockey Club; Graham Haygarth, well known as a sporting writer and now handicapper in North Queensland, and other well-known racing men. Shaw has worked wonders with cripples, but would now like a few sound horses as a change. He is an adept at “placing” a horse, which is such a great factor in making stable inmates pay their way.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.(BY “PEGASUR.”)

Gradually the trainers from the eastern colonies are following the adventurous gold-seekers to Westralia. The latest addition to the ranks of Perth Trainers is Mr. Alfred Shaw, who hails from Queensland. Mr. Shaw brings with him the best of credentials as a trainer. He has trained many winners of important races, among the number being Flinders, Tattler, Visor, Kalamia, Saladin, Orme, Physician, and War Queen. Shaw is highly recommended by Mr. Russell, the mayor of Charters Towers and a prominent businessman, and by Mr. Pritchard, bank manager, and a warm supporter of racing. Shaw should be an acquisition to the Perth owners.

John was the 5th of William and Sarah (L) S’s 13 children. Sarah was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (B) L and died in 1911 aged 48.

In 1912 William S married 24 year old Sarah Ann Farmer P, daughter of William Henry and Elizabeth (R) P of Colac Vic. William and Sarah had 2 children before William died in September 1919; their third child was born after William’s death.

To add a little more intrigue to this family, it seems that William S was born in England as William T, the eldest son of Charles and Susan (S) T who arrived in Australia in November 1855. Charles T died in 1861 and his widow Susan subsequently married Thomas S (no relation).

One of John S’s older brothers also served in WWI but sadly did not return home:

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission will sign off for the plaques but would prefer a relative to do that and take part in the commemoration service once the plaques are placed on all the soldiers’ graves.

Are you related to any of these 19 WWI soldiers? The Brighton Cemetorians would appreciate any help anyone can give in helping to locate their families. Lest we forget.
