Materials

• Crochet cotton size 10: 1 (225-yd) ball white (A), 1 (150-yd) ballgreen (B) and 1 (300-yd) balleach shaded yellows (C) andshaded purples (D)

• 6-strand embroidery floss: 1skein each purple, lilac, gold,aqua, and black

• Size 7 steel crochet hook or sizeneeded to obtain gauge

• Size 10 steel crochet hook

• 9 1/2 inch-diameter hem-stitched linen circle

• Embroidery needle

• Iron-on butterfly transfer 

• Embroidery hoop

• Dressmaker's carbon and ballpoint pen or pencil (optional)

GaugePansy = 2 inches from tip of first lower petal to tip of 3rd lower petalCheck gauge to save time.

Pattern NotesJoin rnds with a sl st unless otherwise stated.

Pattern StitchesSurface ch: With crochet hook, make a sl knot at end of 2-strand length of embroidery floss. Remove slknot from hook. Holding sl knot on WS of work, insert hook from RS to WS at point where embroidery willbeg, pick up lp, draw through to RS of work. *Insert hook from RS to WS at next point on work, draw up alp with embroi-dery floss from WS to RS of work and through lp on hook, rep from * as necessary alongoutline, ending with draw up entire length of floss to RS of work and through lp on hook; holding hook at

WS of work, insert hook from WS of work to RS at end of last ch made, draw entire length of flossthrough to WS, tie securely.Dropped lp join (dlj): Remove hook from lp, insert hook from RS to WS in indicated st or sp, pick updropped lp, draw through st or sp to RS of work.Cl: Holding back on hook last lp of each st, 3 tr in indicated st, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hook.

Doily Center Following manufacturer's instructions, iron butterfly transfer pattern onto center of linen cloth or applypattern to center of cloth using dressmaker's carbon and ballpoint pen or pencil.Insert linen cloth into embroidery hoop. Using photo as a guide, outline pattern with surface chain usingsmaller crochet hook and 2 strands of embroidery floss.With embroidery needle, embroider French knots on butterfly's wings.Cut away excess linen to within 1/8 inch from edge of hemstitching.

Border Rnd 1: With larger hook, attach A with a sl st in any hole around edge of doily center, ch 1, sc in same

(5 ch-7 sps)Rnd 2: Sc in next dc, [{6 dc, 2 tr, ch 1, 2 tr, 6 dc} in next sp, sc in center dc of next 3-dc group] 3 times (3lower petals made), ch 4, [{dtr, ch 1} 11 times, dtr, {tr, ch 1} twice, dc, ch 1, dc] in next sp, sc in center dcof next 3-dc group, [{dc, ch 1} twice, {tr, ch 1} twice, {dtr, ch 1} 11 times, dtr] in next sp, ch 4 (2 upper petals made), join in beg sc, fasten off.

Second PansyRnd 1 (RS): With larger hook and D, rep Rnd 1 of first pansy.Rnd 2: Sc in next dc, [6 dc, 2 tr, ch 1] in next sp, dlj in ch-1 sp on 3rd lower petal of previous pansy, [2 tr,6 dc] in same sp on working pansy as last 2 tr made, [6 dc, 2 tr, ch 1] in next sp, dlj to center sc of 5-sc

group on Rnd 2 of border, [2 tr, 6 dc] in same sp on working pansy as last 2 tr made, continue around asfor Rnd 2 of first pansy.

Rem 18 PansiesRnds 1 & 2: Alternating C and D for each pansy, rep Rnds 1 and 2 of second pansy, joining first lower petal of last pansy to third lower petal of previous pansy and third lower petal to first lower petal of firstpansy.
