Part 6

Having discussed thoroughly the principle of equal dignity allow me to present a more relatable principle for our consideration I now want to focus on the capacity to empathize the ability to put oneself in another personrsquos shoes a capacity that we should be able to have

One of my all-time favorite commencement speeches is one titled The Fringe Benefits of Failures and the Importance of Imagination given by author JK Rowling to Harvard graduates in 2008 Allow me to share with you what I consider to be the most powerful part of the speech

Unlike any other creature on this planet humans can learn and understand without having ex-perienced They can think themselves into other peoplersquos places

Of course this is a power like my brand of fictional magic that is morally neutral One might use such an ability to manipulate or control just as much as to understand or sympathize

And many prefer not to exercise their imaginations at all They choose to remain comfortably within the bounds of their own experience never troubling to wonder how it would feel to have been born other than they are They can refuse to hear screams or to peer inside cages they can close their minds and hearts to any suffering that does not touch them personally they can refuse to know[1]

This really reminds me of the famous Lucan parable of the poor Lazarus The rich man in this parable is a perfect example of us who arenrsquot at all evil but simply refuse to step out of our comfort zone refuse to imagine what itrsquos like not having the life we have and refuse to ponder how we would want to be treated when the tables are turned

My mother and I know of a lady who was extremely vocal about her support for deporting people regardless of their circumstances She posted almost daily videos of immigrants taken away their homes in handcuffs of people being jailed of people being sent to planes to return to their countries It almost seemed as if this woman derived a certain pleasure and fascination from these videos

I am not condemning the person but I am condemning the attitude No one should rejoice at the expense of another personrsquos misery

The ironic thing is that she was an immigrant herself Her family arrived in this country in the 1990s She and her family received a warm reception and hospitality from the people here They lived on benefits as well How quickly a person can forget

Should we not be moved by how families are being torn by children being separated from their parents by people being locked up in a deplorable facility by men and women being treated with contempt and disgust Should we not be disturbed by the absolute poverty and danger that drove so many to flee their homes and their loved ones in hope of a better life in spite of the challenges they may face

Compassion and empathy are God-given gifts placed inside every human heart That said like a pearl of great price unless it is discovered dug up and cleaned it will remain hidden in the dirt without any sort of value This proves to be true for everyone It all begins with our effort of think beyond our own experiences to see beyond our own little worlds and to put ourselves beyond our own wants and needs

Itrsquos a choice nevertheless No one can force anyone to care We can refuse to understand We can refuse to know

Parte 6

Parte 6

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

In todayrsquos Gospel and reading from the letter of St Paul we hear of the gift of the Triune God Father Son and Holy Spirit In our devotional life we make the sign of the cross and recite the ldquoGlory Berdquo as an expression of our faith as a Trinitarian people But what does it mean for Christian stewards to accept in a practical way the experience of God in this three-fold gift Is it a call to share our own life in community with compassion and love and to work for healing justice peace and unity Is it an invitation to invite others into fellowship with us in the unity of the Father Son and Spirit

Parte 6
