Coimbra, velha cidade

De ruas medievais;

Do Penedo da Saudade

Onde tantos imortais

Poetas e trovadores,

Tiveram os seus amores

Nos tempos da mocidade…

Coimbra dos estudantes

E das tricanas bonitas,

Das noites inebriantes

Da tua Queima das Fitas…

Coimbra, cidade linda,

Foste sempre e és ainda

A cidade capital

Do amor em Portugal!

Tens na Fonte dos Amores

O amor simbolizado

Por D. Pedro e D. Inês

Num romance consagrado.

Rio Mondego, o Choupal,

O teu Jardim da Sereia

E a Escada Monumental

Junto à Universidade…

Fazem de ti, sem igual,

A mais bonita cidade!

Deste nosso Portugal!...

Coimbra de tradições,

Cidade-mãe de doutores

E da velha Universidade;

Fazes vibrar corações

Por tantas recordações,

Numa palavra…és saudade!

Porto, the city have a good transport network that gives easy access to airports and

to the ports of Aveiro e Figueira da Foz. Coimbra has no airport. You need to use

either the Lisbon or Porto airports.

By Train:

Trains run by CP (www.cp.pt ) to and from major Portuguese cities. All of the

trains connecting Porto and Lisbon stop at Coimbra-B.

By bus:

Regular bus services connect Coimbra to many cities and other places in Portugal. It´s faster and fares are

normally cheaper than the train. The bus station is located at Av. Fernão de Magalhães and is easily

reached by local bus or on foot (10 min) to city center.

Get to Coimbra from Lisboa (Portela)

International Airport:

Get to Coimbra from Porto (Francisco Sá

Carneiro) International Airport:

You will need to catch a taxi to Lisboa Oriente railway

station; the journey should take approximately 10

minutes and cost 8-10€. Trains for Coimbra run every

hour; you should expect the journey to take

approximately 2 hours and cost 20€.

There are two railway stations in Coimbra: Coimbra A

– Estação Nova, “The New Station” and Coimbra-B –

Estação Velha, “The Old Station.” All trains stop at

Coimbra B. Once there, you should take a shuttle to

Coimbra A (your train ticket already includes this

short trip).

When leaving the airport head towards (metro). In the metro

station, take the option buy new ticket and select Z4 (Price:

1.40eur+0.50eur=1,90eur). You need to validate the ticket by

approaching the ticket to the yellow machines (as shown in the

picture) until a green light is shown and a single bip sounds.

Weather

Winter and Autumn usually there isn’t negative temperatures, but because houses don’t have central

heating you need warm clothes to wear inside and outside the houses. It doesn’t snow in Coimbra.

Spring and Summer, hot and very hot weather, but some nights are cold. So bring bikinis and beach towel

but some jackets to wear during the night.

The City

Even if Coimbra is an ancient town it does never have

to worry about how to keep coming out with fresh

ideas or how to sustain vitality as there is one of the

largest universities in Portugal - the University of

Coimbra. As students of the university usually state:

“The city of students – it totally defines the city.”

Coimbra University is a public university and its

origins date back to the 13th century (as it was

founded already in 1290 by Portuguese King Dinis I).

Nowadays, it has students from 70 different

nationalities; so almost 10% of the students are

foreigners, making it the most international university in Portugal. University of Coimbra holds a great

historical meaning in Portuguese speaking world as well as in Europe’s higher education system.

Coimbra is divided into two distinct areas:

• Alta (upper town): Is the older part, which is entered through Arco de Almedina, a gateway

that brings back memories of the Arab occupation. The upper town consists of steep narrow

streets, where the "republics" (typical communal student residences) are to be found, as well as

some of the city´s most important buildings Sé Velha (Old Cathedral), Sé Nova (New

Cathedral), the University and the Casa de Sub-Ripas.

Page 7: Centro de carreiras | IPC

7

• Baixa (lower town): By the river, where most of the city is commercial activity is

concentrated. Beyond the university, Coimbra has much else to offer the visitor not least an array

of medieval churches. Accessing the old part of the city through the Arco de Almedina, we find

two cathedrals known as Se Velha (old) and Se Nova (new) referring to their respective ages,

and though the ‘new’ one dates back to the 17th century its senior was founded in 1170.

Polytechnic of Coimbra (IPC)

Polytechnic of Coimbra (IPC) that was created in 1979 when polytechnic education was introduced in

Portugal.

IPC has becoming today one of the largest polytechnics in the country and one of the most important

institutions of higher education in Portugal.

Today it encompasses six colleges:

ESAC (Coimbra College of Agriculture),

ESEC (Coimbra College of Education),

ESTGOH (Oliveira do Hospital College of

Technology),

ESTSC (Coimbra College of Health

Technology),

ISCAC (Coimbra Institute of Accounting

and Administration

ISEC (Coimbra Institute of Engineering).

In spite of the IPC’s recent history, it inherited the tradition and experience of the colleges which became

part of it.

Students: Associação Académica de Coimbra

Students are represented by the students' union Associação Académica de

Coimbra (AAC). Formed on 3 November 1887, it is the oldest university

students' union in Portugal, with a long history of struggle against unpopular

state policies, forming notable politicians and intellectuals along the way. It also

harbors a very dynamic associative life, with its numerous sports and cultural

sections, as well as a number of other autonomous organizations. It is an

important structure of extracurricular formation of the University of Coimbra's students and a major

institution of the city itself. The AAC develops activities such as theatre, cinema, radio and television

broadcast, music, choral singing, journalism or philately, as well as rowing, athletics and many other

sports. Every student, and occasionally some non-students, is entitled to belong to these sections.

Sports

Coimbra is home to Associação Académica de Coimbra - O.A.F. (known simply as Académica), a

professional football autonomous organism of the University of Coimbra students' union Associação

Académica de Coimbra, founded in 1872 and having its current statute of autonomous football

organization since the 1980s.

Coimbra also has one of the largest multisport clubs in Portugal: the Associação Académica de Coimbra

includes sections dedicated to a wide array of sports such as rugby, volleyball, handball, rink hockey,

basketball, baseball, tennis, swimming, rowing, among many others.

Accommodation

It is easy to find rooms for rent, as there are a lot of landlords, who offer annually their apartments. The

rooms´ prices (with furniture) are around 125€/200€ for a double room and 150€/250€ for a single room.

Sometimes expenses (electricity, water, internet and gas) are included, other times not or only some

expenses are included in the price.

There isn't always internet in the apartments, sometimes you have to talk with the owners to have it. We

take, usually, between one to three days to find a house. If you prefer a private apartment, you can find

some of them for rent around 350€-650€/per month.

IMPORTANT: Many houses in Portugal do NOT have central heating only small heaters so bring warm

clothes to wear inside the houses, especially in the 1st semester and beginning of second semester.

town and it is easy to catch a bus to go to different parts of the town. You can also use a bicycle but there

are no isolated cycle tracks and a hilly city landscape may make cycling complicated.

and are generally regarded as some of the most beautiful botanical

gardens in Portugal, covering an area up to 13 hectares.

back from the reign of King Afonso Henriques and is based on

Romanesque style, which was popular at that period in Coimbra. It is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Portugal.

Page 12: Centro de carreiras | IPC

12

Sé Nova (Coimbra New Cathedral): originally the church of

the Jesuit university of Coimbra, was started in 1598 and finished

around 1640. The upper Baroque facade was completed in the 18th

Century and contrasts with the lower original facade in the strict Mannerist style.

Convent of Santa Clara-a-Velha: located on the left bank of

Mondego River is a nice representative of Gothic style in Portugal.

Monastery of Santa Cruz: a National Pantheon where the

tombs of King D. Afonso Henriques, 1st King of Portugal and his

son, King D. Sancho I, can be found.

Aqueduct: Coimbra’s well preserved aqueduct is an example of

its Roman origins

Page 13: Centro de carreiras | IPC

13

Portugal dos Pequenitos: theme park, founded in 1940, a

small version of Portugal. It has several diminutive scale models of

typical houses and monuments all around from Portugal and some

of its former colonies.

Coimbra Municipal Stadium: built for EURO 2004, hosts the

local football team from Portugal top division “Academica” also

known as “Os estudantes” (the students) or “Briosa”.

Mondego River: goes through Coimbra city, makes the old city

bright and beautiful with the nice scenery on both banks.

Conímbriga Ruins: the most important Roman remains from

Roman settlement in Portugal lies 16 km south of Coimbra. The

city's walls are largely intact, and the mosaic floors and foundations

of many houses and public buildings are amazingly well preserved.

Figueira da Foz: located at the mouth of the Mondego river, 40

km west of Coimbra, Figueira is a coastal city with several beaches,

seaport facilities and a casino (Casino da Figueira).

Page 14: Centro de carreiras | IPC

14

The Castle of Montemor-o-Velho: the castle was part of the

defensive line that protected the city of Coimbra in the 12th

century. Nowadays, besides the historical remains, it also offers a

magnificent view.

Basófias: the trip on the board the Basófias in the River Mondego

places. Lasting 1 hour, with recorded information in several

languages.

Quinta das Lágrimas: It was at Quinta das Lagrimas that in XIV

century Prince Pedro e Ines de Castro lived they forbidden love

affair. Legend says that it was there that Ines cried for the last time,

wilhe been pierced by the daggers of the killers send by King

Afonso. Pedros’s father. Her blood still colors the stoned-bed of the

fountain that was born of her tears.

Page 15: Centro de carreiras | IPC

15

Pedro and Inês Walking Bridge: pedestrian bridge over the

Mondego River, which includes a Cycle via, was made to connect

the Mondego Green Park with the left bank of the river.

Penedo da Saudade: It´s an garden that has partial views of

Coimbra skyline and the Coimbra City Stadium. According to the

legend, nothing remained the same after the death of Inês de Castro.

It used to be a relaxing and isolated place, where D. Pedro used to

come to grieve the loss of his beloved Inês. It is said that this

mourning and sadness gave this place its name – Penedo da

Saudade (Rock of Nostalgia). Many centuries later, it seemed to be the right place for the romantic encounters of students, and it was at

this time that Coimbra Fado was born, challenging eternity with

words they etched on the stone.
