La puntería es muchas veces caprichosa. Como suele ser habitual, los comienzos de año llevan implícitos numerosos deseos en la salud, en el trabajo y en el amor. Y para nosotros 2020 comenzaba con importantes propósitos en dos de estas vertientes. El amor por lo que hacemos y la idea de embarcarnos en un ilusionante proyecto editorial, nos llevó a unir nuestras perspectivas y experiencia laboral y dar vida a SGplus. Pero como decíamos, los antojos del destino quisieron que justo al mes de ponerlo en marcha, los buenos deseos en torno a la salud se truncaran para la humanidad, cambiando la historia de este año. Una prueba sobrevenida en el camino que nos ha ayudado a adaptarnos, superarnos y ganar en confianza.

Como medio de comunicación nos hemos enfocado en poner de relieve la actualidad de nuestro entorno, contada desde la perspectiva de potenciar el discurso positivo y constructivo. Meses en los que, a pesar de las circunstancias, hemos recibido el calor y el apoyo tanto de empresarios como de lectores. El equipo de SGplus se siente afortunado y agradecido de la buena acogida vivida y promete seguir trabajando con las mismas ganas, abiertos a cualquier sugerencia que nos quieran hacer llegar. Nuestro deseo para 2021 es que la buena salud impere por encima de todo, para que las personas que están detrás de cada proyecto puedan seguir estando y el resto disfrutemos de esa interactividad que nos hace a todos crecer y evolucionar.

Hitting the target can often be whimsical. Like usual, the new year is

implicitly replete with numerous wishes for health, work and love. And,

for us, 2020 kicked off with important resolutions in two of these areas.

Loving what we do and the idea of embarking on an exciting publishing

project led us to join our views and work experience to bring SGplus to

life.

But, as mentioned, the whims of fate decided to put the health of

humanity on the front line, right in the month we founded the magazine,

changing history this year. An unexpected trial along the road that has

helped us to adapt, excel and gain confidence.

As a media source, we have focused on highlighting current affairs

in our region, told with a view to strengthening positive and constructive

dialogue. Months during which we have received warmth and support

from both businesspeople and our readers, despite the circumstances. The

SGplus team feels fortunate and grateful about the great welcome we’ve

experienced and promises to keep working under the same purpose and

goals, open to any suggestions that you would like to send us.

Our wish for 2021 is that good health prevails above all else, so that the

people behind each issue can keep being here and the rest can enjoy this

interactivity that makes us all grow and evolve.

Brexit, continúa el suspense

A día de hoy, cuando escribo estas líneas, sigue la

pelota en el tejado. En los tejados o los sótanos de

Londres y Bruselas. Y parece que son cuestiones

aparentemente menores, pero que suenan a que

son del tipo “quién la tiene más…”.

El tema de la pesca, por ejemplo, su importancia

económica es insignificante en comparación

con otras muchas cuestiones ya resueltas,

pero los británicos consideran que la soberanía

absoluta sobre sus aguas es una línea roja y los

franceses insisten en su derecho

ancestral a pescar en ellas. Johnson

contra Macron, que en realidad

refleja un atávico choque de orgullos

patrios. Ingleses y franceses que

históricamente “no se pueden ver”.

También difieren en el futuro papel

del TJCE, o sea, el cumplimiento en

el futuro de los acuerdos, ¿cómo se

mantiene y se gestionan las diferencias? y ¿ante

qué órgano que las resuelva? Y la presidenta

alemana - de total confianza de Ángela Merkel

- de la Comisión desplegando toda su actividad

diplomática para encontrar una fórmula que

permita que ninguno aparezca como vencido.

Un buen acuerdo implica necesariamente que

las dos partes se sientan ganadoras o puedan

aparentar que lo son.

Y mientras, todo lo demás pendiente, y se agota

porque nuestra economía y nuestro modo de

vida en el Campo de Gibraltar dependen, en

buena parte, de ese futurible. Pero claro, a su

vez esos memorandos de entendimiento están

pendientes del Acuerdo de rango superior, el que

tienen que alcanzar Londres y Bruselas.

Siendo optimista, existen tres circunstancias

vitales para que un acuerdo sea posible: ambas

partes lo quieren, lo mejor para todos es que

lo haya y, además, todavía siguen hablando. A

día de hoy se espera una visita del

Premier a Bruselas.

Yo, en tanto se deshoja la margarita,

sigo acordándome de esa frase

genial entre políticos de la novela

El Gatopardo: “vamos a cambiarlo

todo para que todo siga igual”. Y

entonces, ¿para qué han montado

todo esto? Políticos…

el plazo. Bueno, en realidad como siempre

que Europa ha tenido que tomar decisiones

importantes, los plazos son relativos, y también

las prórrogas. El último día a las 6 de la

madrugada nos darán la noticia. ¡Hay acuerdo!

El Parlamento Europeo tiene ya previsto reunirse

los días 28 y 29.

¿Y de lo nuestro qué? Parece que todos los puntos

pendientes entre España, R.U. y Gibraltar están

ya acordados. Y nos afectan muy directamente

El empresario, un líder en solitario ante la crisis

La adaptación a las circunstancias, la escasez de ayudas y cómo salir fortalecidos fueron los principales puntos

de la charla que mantuvieron los cinco empresarios invitados a este último encuentro

La incidencia expansiva de la actual crisis sanitaria y financiera abarca tal cantidad de sectores y ha provocado un impacto tan marcado a todos los niveles, que desde SGplus hemos querido centrar nuestros primeros Encuentros en d´Alicia en el análisis del mismo. Distintos empresarios del entorno vienen acompañándonos en estos foros de debate, donde de manera abierta, dialogante y constructiva, exponen y analizan su visión ante las circunstancias, cómo lo están viviendo y de qué manera volveremos a la deseada normalidad.Para hablar concretamente de una autoimpuesta adaptación empresarial, de la existencia y eficiencia o no de ayudas estatales al empresario, así como para proponer posibles soluciones, en esta ocasión han acudido a nuestra cita mensual: Javier Jiménez-Casquet (abogado y director general de Alcaidesa), Ana Crespo (Atún de Almadraba), Richard Bell-Young (Vinomarket), Olimpia Tardá (International Montessori School) y Francisco Calle (Valderrama Luxury Gardens).

Gestión de ayudasLos invitados en este debate coincidieron en la opinión sobre que el sector empresarial español adolece de la presencia de ayudas estatales eficientes desde el comienzo de la crisis. E inciden en la necesidad de haber tenido que solventar y sobrellevar los efectos de la pandemia por ellos mismos. En este sentido, Ana Crespo reconocía que este año en su empresa habían incurrido en

para acceder a la información sobre las ayudas a los empresarios. “Veo mucha información de medidas, de normas, pero no recibimos tan bien y tan fácilmente la información sobre ayudas. Yo soy un poco cínico al respecto y pienso que dónde hay oportunidad de multar siempre hay información”. Al hilo de la conversación, Francisco Calle resumía la realidad que él ve en “soluciónalo

unos gastos de producción muy altos. “Las empresas nos hemos tenido que esforzar una barbaridad para adaptarnos a esto, yo creo que nos hemos visto solos. Hasta el momento, el gasto lo han asumido las empresas y a partir de ahora vendrán las ayudas solicitadas. Pero en primer lugar te toca a ti planificar”.Por su parte, Richard Bell-Young quiso mostrar su descontento con la dificultad

tú”, destacaba las trabas para acceder a los préstamos ICO y concluía diciendo: “lo seguro que tenemos en España es la capacidad de sobrevivir, gánatelo tú porque fácil no te lo va a poner ningún organismo oficial ni ningún político”.De la misma manera, Olimpia Tardá se sumaba a la opinión vertida hasta el momento sobre la escasez de respaldo de la Administración. “En lo educativo también

echo en falta muchas ayudas porque nuestro sector tuvo que transformarse digitalmente de una manera brutal de un día para otro. Todo ha corrido a cargo de la empresa. A las pymes nos tienen muy atosigadas”. Y exponía la necesidad de recibir más apoyo con reducciones a nivel fiscal, “estoy segura de que moveríamos mucho más la economía”. Y cerrando esta primera puesta en común sobre la gestión de ayudas al empresario, Javier Jiménez-Casquet vertía una de las opiniones más críticas del encuentro. “Yo considero que esto ha sido un desastre. Aquí han habido intereses partidistas y buscar caladero de votos y se ha desprotegido totalmente al motor de este país, que son las pymes. Los ERTE han venido tarde, desordenados, sin información y mal. Ni los asesores laborales sabían por dónde tirar. Sobre las ayudas a la hostelería, qué restaurante puede sobrevivir cerrando las seis de la tarde. Hay otros países de la Unión Europea en el que están dando el 75% del ingreso anual. Aquí estamos acostumbrados al subsidio, que es lo que la gente al final cree que es lo bueno. En lugar de ayudar de verdad al que quiere trabajar e impulsar la economía. Por otro lado, el gasto en cuanto a los EPI de las empresas lo ha tenido que asumir todo el empresario.”Y en lo referente al sector turístico, el director general de Alcaidesa aseveró que aún siguen esperando las medidas. “El turismo está herido de muerte. Nosotros

hemos tenido una caída de 75% de ingresos. Es un auténtico despropósito. Nos lo hemos cargado y veremos a ver cuándo el extranjero se siente con confianza para volver a viajar”. Pero al igual que sus compañeros de mesa, coincidía en la confianza sobre la eficacia individual de cada empresario. “Al final

saldremos porque estamos acostumbrados a pelear, no nos queda otra”. Y añadía, “los políticos tienen la suerte de que dentro de lo que cabe somos un país pacífico y trabajador”. Tras exponer sus planteamientos, los empresarios incidieron en una opinión generalizada sobre el porqué de la ineficacia

en la gestión de estas ayudas. “Tener un gobierno débil en este momento es muy complicado”, decía Jiménez-Casquet. Y salió a escena el ejemplo alemán, “a lo mejor el espejo debería ser ese, un gobierno fuerte, creen en su líder y además éste acierta”. A lo que Ana Crespo añadía, “Alemania es un país tremendamente disciplinado, fuerte y que sabe hacer las cosas”. Sin embargo, como exponía Francisco Calle, “en Europa somos lentos en reaccionar, es un conglomerado de intereses y eso no puede funcionar”.

Búsqueda de solucionesEn esta tercera charla entre empresarios se confirma que el sector está lejos de esperar grandes soluciones externas. La visión de Olimpia Tardá se centraba en “la capacidad de resiliencia del empresario, de inventiva y de estar continuamente mejorando el valor de lo que tú proporcionas de una manera permanente”. El mejor ejemplo de su propuesta la teníamos ahí mismo. La reinvención con la puesta en marcha de la web de la empresa de Ana Crespo, que ha impulsado las ventas en un año complicado, con una excelente respuesta por parte del cliente. La especialización, la profesionalización y la creencia en nosotros mismos, así como la educación, son las bases en las que estos empresarios concluyeron para salir fortalecidos de esta experiencia. “Todas las profesiones dignifican siempre que sean bien hechas”, decía Crespo. Francisco Calle invitaba a un mayor apoyo interempresarial, que ayude a generar diálogo y encontrar soluciones. Mientras, Jiménez-Casquet ponía en valor la labor de las Cámaras de Comercio para generar movimiento. El encuentro se desarrolló entre propuestas, opiniones y soluciones con tintes diversos en una charla constructiva. Todos manifestaron estar de acuerdo en la necesidad de unión y, sobre todo, de apoyo al comercio local, manteniendo una actitud proactiva.

Adaptation to circumstances, the scarcity of aids and how to emerge stronger were the main points discussed

during the chat we had with the five businesspeople we invited to our latest meeting

The businessowner, a leader standing alone before the crisis

The expansion of the current health and

financial crisis encompasses such a large

number of sectors and has caused such

a huge impact at all levels that all of us at

SGplus wanted to centre our first Meetings

at d’Alicia on analysing this topic. Different

local businessowners and businesspeople

are with us at these forums for debate, where

they set out and analyse their vision openly,

expansively and constructively about the

circumstances, how we are getting through

them and how we will return to the much-

desired normality.

To speak specifically of a self-imposed

business adaptation, of whether or not aids

exist and are effective, as well as proposing

possible solutions, the people we invited

to our meeting this month were: Javier

Jiménez-Casquet (lawyer and managing

director of Alcaidesa), Ana Crespo (Atún

de Almadraba), Richard Bell-Young

(Vinomarket), Olimpia Tardá (International

Montessori School) and Francisco Calle

(Valderrama Luxury Gardens).

Managing benefits and aidsThe guests at this debate all agreed that

the Spanish business sector has suffered

from the lack of effective state assistance

since the beginning of the crisis. And they

also agreed that they needed to handle

and endure the effects of the pandemic by

themselves.

In this regard, Ana Crespo acknowledged

that her company incurred extremely high

production costs this year. ‘At companies,

we’ve had to work like mad to adapt to it

and I think we have all felt very alone. Until

now, companies have assumed expenditures

and, starting now, the aids we’ve applied

for will start arriving. But you are the one

responsible for planning.’

On his part, Richard Bell-Young expressed

his displeasure with how difficult it’s

been to find information about aids for

businessowners. ‘I see tonnes of information

on measures and on rules, but it is not so

easy to find information about benefits. I’m

a bit cynical and think that where there’s an

opportunity to apply fines, there will always

be information,’

Joining the conversation, Francisco Calle

summed up his experience of ‘solve it

yourself’, pointing out the bureaucracy

involved in accessing ICO loans. He

concluded by saying: ‘what we’ve definitely

got in Spain is the ability to survive, so do

it yourself, because no official organisation

and no politician are going to make it easy

for you’. Olimpia Tardá similarly joined

the opinions expressed about the lack of

support from the Central Administration.

‘The education field has also been extremely

short of benefits, because our sector had

the brutal task of digitally transforming

itself from one day to the next. Businesses

have had to pay for everything. At SMEs we

have felt extraordinary pressure’. And she

expressed the need to receive more support

with tax reductions. ‘I am sure we would

move the economy forward much more.’

Closing this first sharing of how aids for

businesses are handled, Javier Jiménez-

Casquet gave one of the most critical

opinions of the meeting. ‘I think it has been

a disaster. There have been political party

interests, seeking votes, and they have left

the true engine of this country – small and

mid-sized companies – totally defenceless.

The voluntary redundancy plans (ERTE in

its Spanish acronym) came later, totally

unorganised and without any information

and just bad. Not even labour advisors knew

where to go or what to do. And aids for the

hospitality sector… what restaurant can

survive closing at six in the afternoon? There

are other EU countries that are providing

benefits of 75% of annual earnings. Here we

are used to subsidies, which is what people

end up thinking is good. Instead of really

helping those who want to work and drive

the economy. Moreover, expenditures for

PPEs at companies have been totally paid

for and handled by the businessowners.’

With regard to the tourism sector, the

managing director of Alcaidesa swore they

are still waiting for measures. ‘Tourism has

received a fatal blow. Our revenues have

plummeted by 75%. It has been absurd. We

have been destroyed and we’ll see when

foreigners feel confident enough to travel

again.’

However, like his colleagues at the table, he

agreed in each businessperson having to

trust in their own individual efficacy. ‘In the

end, we will get through it, because we’re

used to fighting. There’s no other choice.’

And he added, ‘the politicians are lucky that,

insofar as it’s possible, we are a peaceful and

hard-working country.’

After setting out their thoughts, these

businesspeople agreed about a widespread

opinion on the why of the inefficacy in

managing these aids. ‘Having a weak

government at this time is extremely

complex,’ said Jiménez-Casquet. And

Germany was given as an example, ‘maybe

the mirror should be on this country, a strong

government whose people believe in their

leader and who, besides that, is absolutely

right.’ To which Ana Crespo added,

‘Germany is a tremendously disciplined and

strong country that knows how to do things.’

However, as Francisco Calle said, ‘in Europe

we are slow to react, it’s a conglomerate of

interests and that can’t work.’

Search for solutionsIn this third chat among businesspeople,

we could confirm that the sector is far from

expecting big solutions from outside. The

vision of Olimpia Tardá centred on ‘the

businessowners’ capacity for resilience, for

being inventive and continuously improving

the value of what you provide on a

permanent basis.’ We had the best example

of her proposal right there. Reinvention,

with the start-up of the website of Ana

Crespo’s company, which has driven sales in

a complicated year, with excellent customer

responses.

Specialisation, professionalisation and

believing in themselves, as well as

education, are the foundations that these

businesspeople concluded were required to

emerge stronger from this experience. ‘All

professions are dignified, provided that they

are well done,’ said Crespo.

Francisco Calle called for greater inter-

business support, which helps to generate

dialogue and find solutions. Meanwhile,

Jiménez-Casquet highlighted the work of

the Chambers of Commerce to generate

movement.

The meeting had a flurry of suggestions,

opinions and solutions of diverse types in a

very constructive talk. Everyone expressed

their agreement with the need to unify and,

above all, support local business and keep a

proactive attitude.

El consumo en exceso forma parte de nuestro día a día pero en estas fechas se multiplica, por eso os invito a reflexionar sobre ello. Cómo eduques hoy a tus hijos repercutirá en el sistema de valores que ellos desarrollarán, estos valores actuarán de brújula y guiarán sus comportamientos a lo largo de sus vidas. ¿En qué clase de personas queremos que se convierta nuestro hijo? Despilfarrador o moderado, qué acumula cosas o que reutiliza y recicla.Compra compulsivamente o valora si lo necesita o noEducar en el consumo responsable se hace hoy realmente difícil. is part of our daily lives, but it

skyrockets during the holidays,

which is why I would like to ask

you to reflect on it. How we

educate our children today will influence

the value system they will develop. These

values will be their compass and will guide

their behaviours throughout their lives.

What type of people do we want our

children to become? Wasteful or moderate,

accumulating possessions or reusing and

recycling?

Compulsive buying, or stopping to think

about whether or not they need it?

Teaching responsible consumption has

become quite difficult today. The media

bombard us, especially at Christmas with

adverts on the latest mobile model, the

Cetáceos en el Estrecho de Gibraltar

Los que vivimos en el área del Estrecho de Gibraltar somos unos privilegiados. Es un punto caliente tanto en historia como en biodiversidad. Es un lugar de cruce de culturas y de rutas migratorias tanto de humanos como de animales. Dos continentes se encuentran de norte a sur y dos mares de este a oeste. La riqueza cultural y biológica que entraña esta situación es incalculable. Daría lugar a cientos de artículos tan solo describir esta riqueza. En estas aguas del Estrecho vive un grupo de animales que solo con poder observarlos alegra el día a los que deciden hacer esta travesía. Nos referimos a los cetáceos; siete son las especies que podemos observar con regularidad en este entorno.El delfín común (Delphinus delphi) es un delfín de diseño muy atractivo. La parte dorsal es gris oscuro mientras que la parte ventral es clara. En los flancos se cruzan dos óvalos: el delantero es de color crema y el trasero de color gris, formando una V característica. La aleta dorsal es triangular o en forma de hoz. Suele medir de media alrededor de los dos metros y pesar unos 120 kg. Su alimentación, como en la mayoría de los delfines, consiste en peces y moluscos. Es residente en la zona todo el año y se pueden observar también en la Bahía de Algeciras.El delfín listado (Stenella coeruleoalba) tiene un tamaño y peso parecido al delfín común aunque su diseño de color es distinto. Comparte el contraste de dorso oscuro y vientre claro mientras que en los laterales muestra una franja gris azulada clara desde la cabeza hasta el nacimiento de la aleta dorsal. Detrás del ojo tiene tres líneas oscuras, una de ellas larga y otras dos cortas. La aleta dorsal en forma de hoz. Todo el año está presente en nuestra zona, a veces interactuando con el delfín común formando grupos mixtos. Al igual que el común se puede observar en la Bahía.El delfín mular (Tursiops truncatus) alcanza un peso y un tamaño considerable, pudiendo alcanzar a veces, e incluso superar, el doble en los ejemplares adultos a los dos anteriores. La coloración general es grisácea, más oscura en el dorso y clara en el vientre, sin dibujos en los flancos. Es el típico delfín de los delfinarios, donde

se les encarcela y se les enseña a hacer las tonterías que tanto nos gustan a los humanos.En el estrecho viven todo el año y, según nuestra experiencia personal, no suelen entrar mucho en la Bahía, donde solo en contadas ocasiones hemos podido observarlos.Calderón común (Globicephala melas). El nombre científico nos indica una de las características físicas de este cetáceo: cabeza negra en forma de globo. El color general es gris muy oscuro con una mancha clara en el pecho. La aleta dorsal tiene forma de hoz y las pectorales son bastante largas. Lentos de movimientos, se pueden observar flotando en grupos en la superficie del mar. Pueden llegar a los 5 ó 6 metros de longitud y pesar hasta más de tres toneladas. Viven todo el año en las aguas del Estrecho. Personalmente nunca los hemos podido ver en la Bahía.La orca (Orcinus orca) es el de mayor tamaño y peso de los delfines, pudiendo los ejemplares adultos alcanzar los 10 m de longitud y un peso de 9.000 kg. El color es negro con diseño blanco en el vientre y manchas oculares también blancas. Tras la aleta dorsal muestra un dibujo grisáceo con la forma del signo de Aries. Las aletas dorsales son enormes: mayores y afiladas

en los machos y más pequeñas y en forma de hoz en las hembras. Las aletas pectorales son redondeadas. En el Estrecho pueden verse prioritariamente en los meses de Julio y Agosto, donde acuden a alimentarse aprovechando la migración prenupcial del atún rojo. Hay grupos que aprovechan de forma inteligente las capturas de los pescadores y les arrebatan las piezas una vez enganchados en los anzuelos.Podemos encontrar al cachalote (Physeter macrocephalus) en el Estrecho durante todo el año. No suele entrar en la Bahía aunque existen algunas citas de avistamientos. Es el más grande de los odontocetos (cetáceos con dientes) llegando a las 50 toneladas de peso y unos 18 m de longitud. Suele buscar su alimento, consistente en grandes calamares, en las profundidades marinas; es un gran buceador pudiendo aguantar la respiración por más de una hora. El color de su cuerpo es gris oscuro y posee una enorme cabeza; no tiene aleta dorsal teniendo en cambio una especie de crestas en la cola, terminando en una enorme aleta caudal. El espiráculo se sitúa a la izquierda de la cabeza, emitiendo el chorro respiratorio hacia ese lado, lo que le identifica en la distancia aunque no son fáciles de ver.El rorcual común (Balaenoptera physalus)

es un animal enorme, solo superado en tamaño por la ballena azul. Alcanza los 25 m. y un peso de hasta 80 toneladas. La parte dorsal del cuerpo es gris oscuro con la parte ventral blanca, así como la parte inferior de la mandíbula, las aletas pectorales y la aleta caudal. La aleta dorsal es pequeña en relación al cuerpo y tiene forma de hoz. El soplo respiratorio es recto y alcanza gran altura. Suele tener una marca en forma de V detrás del espiráculo y una curiosa asimetría consistente en una mancha blanca a la derecha de la mandíbula inferior mientras que el lado izquierdo es oscuro. Hay quién dice que son capaces de atravesar el Estrecho en menos de una hora. No entran en la Bahía y en el Estrecho solo están de paso. Cuando os encontréis a estas hermosas criaturas, parad las máquinas o arriar las velas. Respetadlas y observadlas. Merece la pena disfrutar y aprender de ellas. Son joyas naturales de nuestra comarca y un auténtico privilegio que debemos valorar y conservar.

to you the spectacular variety of cetaceans that abound in our waters

Those of us who live around the Strait of

Gibraltar are very privileged. It is a hot point

both with regard to history and biodiversity.

It is a crossroads of cultures and migratory

routes of both humans and animals. Two

continents are found north and south and

two seas to the east and west. The cultural

and biological wealth represented by this

fact is incalculable. It would take 100s of

articles to even describe this wealth. And

a group of animals live in the waters of the

Strait. Just seeing them during the crossing

makes people’s days a bit happier. We are

talking about cetaceans, and there are seven

species that we can regularly spot in our

waters.

The short-beaked common dolphin

(Delphinus delphi) is a dolphin with an

extremely attractive design. The dorsal is

dark grey while the ventral part is light. Two

ovals cross its flanks: the front one is cream

coloured and the back one grey, forming

its characteristic V shape. The dorsal fin is

triangular and sickle shaped. This dolphin

tends to grow to about two metres long and

weigh some 120 kg. Like most dolphins, their

diet consists of fish and molluscs. They are

residents throughout the year and can also

be spotted in the Bay of Gibraltar.

The striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba)

has a size and weight similar to the common

dolphin, although its colouring is different. It

shares the contrasting dark dorsal and light

belly, while it has a light bluish grey strip

running from its head to the base of the

dorsal fin. It has three dark lines behind its

eyes, one long and two short. The dorsal fin

has a sickle shape. It is present in our area

throughout the year, interacting at times

with the common dolphin, forming mixed

groups. It can also be seen in the bay, like

the common dolphin.

The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops

truncatus) reaches a considerable size and

weight that can be even greater than double

the size of adult specimens of the previous

two. The general colouring is grey, darker on

top and light on the belly, with no patterns

on the sides. It is the typical dolphin at

dolphinariums, where they are imprisoned

and taught to do the silly tricks that humans

like so much. They live in the strait the

entire year and – based on our personal

experiences – do not tend to enter the Bay

much, where we have only rarely spotted

them.

The long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala

melas). The scientific name tells us about

one of this cetacean’s physical traits: a black

globe-shaped head. The general colour is

a very dark grey with a white patch on the

chest. The dorsal fin is sickle shaped and

the pectoral flippers are quite long. Slow

moving, they can be seen floating in groups

on the surface of the sea. They can reach five

or six metres in length and weigh over three

tonnes. They live year-round in the waters of

the Strait. We have personally never spotted

any in the Bay.

The orca, or killer whale (Orcinus orca), is the

largest and heaviest of the oceanic dolphin

family, where adult specimens can be 10

metres long and weigh 9000 kg. It is black

with a white pattern on the belly and white

spots over the eyes. Behind the dorsal fin, it

has a greyish pattern shaped like an Aries

sign. The dorsal fins are enormous: long and

triangular-shaped males, and smaller and

sickle-shaped on females. The pectoral fins

are rounded. In the Strait, they are most

often seen in July and August, where they

come to feed, taking advantage of the

red tuna’s prenuptial migration. There are

groups that wisely go after the fishermen’s

catches, snatching the pieces caught in the

nets.

We can find the sperm whale (Physeter

macrocephalus) in the Strait year-round.

It doesn’t tend to enter the Bay, although

some viewings have occurred. It is the

biggest of all odontocetes (cetaceans with

teeth) and can weigh up to 50 tonnes and

a length of some 18 m. They tend to hunt

for food – large squid – in the sea depths,

and are great divers, holding their breath for

over an hour. The body colour is dark grey

and they have an enormous head. They do

not have a dorsal fin, but instead have flukes,

or tail lobes, running down the back, ending

in an enormous caudal fin. The spiracle or

nostril is located to the left of the head, with

its blowhole on this side. This trait makes it

easy to identify from a distance, although

they are not easy to see.

The common rorqual or fin whale

(Balaenoptera physalus) is an enormous

animal, only exceeded in size by the blue

whale. It can be up to 25 m long and weigh

up to 80 tonnes. The dorsal of the body is

dark grey and its ventral area is white, along

with the bottom of the jaw, pectoral fins

and tail. The dorsal fin is small compared to

the body and it is sickle shaped. The spout

from the blowhole is straight and very high.

It usually has a V-shaped mark behind the

spiracle and a strange asymmetry consisting

of a white spot to the right of the bottom

jaw, while the left side is dark. Some claim

they can cross the entire Strait in under an

hour. They do not enter the Bay and just

pass through the Strait.

When you spot one of these beautiful

creatures, stop the motor and strike the

sails. Respect them and observe them. It is

well worth enjoying and learning from them.

They are natural gems of our district and

a real privilege that we should value and

conserve.

All the Hollywood celebrities usually get this

treatment a few days before the Oscars to

look radiant for the ceremony at the Kodak

¿Siempre tuviste claro que querías ser músico? Si, desde pequeño empecé a dar clases de guitarra y luego formé un grupo con mi hermano de música rock. Pronto sentí la necesidad de estudiar la técnica, me metí en el conservatorio y me enganché a la música clásica también. El rock y el pop me sigue gustando y me ha aportado mucho. Cuando compones se nota que has tenido ese aprendizaje.¿Se han cumplido tus expectativas? Sí, totalmente. Desde pequeñito me imaginaba siendo compositor. Desde muy joven me atraía el cine y a eso me enfoqué. También he tenido una época metido en la investigación de música electroacústica. Ahora mismo estoy bien, pero han habido momentos difíciles, muy duros, pasas por distintas fases. Pero luego compensa. ¿Qué te hizo introducirte en la música electroacústica? En el conservatorio

‘My maxim is to compose works that people can listen to off-screen that convey something’

Did you always know you wanted to be

a musician? Yes. I started teaching guitar

classes when I was little and then started a

rock group with my brother. Then I felt like I

needed to study technique and went to the

conservatory and fell in love with classical

music too. I still really like rock and pop and

they have given me so much. When you

compose, you can tell when you’ve had this

influence.

Have your expectations been met? Totally.

I imagined being a composer since I was

a little boy. I was also very attracted to

cinema and focused on it. I also went

through a period immersed in researching

electroacoustic music. Right now, I am well,

but there have been difficult times, really

tough. You always go through different

phases. The compensation comes later.

What made you decide to study

electroacoustic music? At the conservatory,

we had a laboratory that was quite innovative

for its day, and one of the teachers took us

there, and we even recorded an album for

the Community of Madrid. Thanks to this

teacher, I did this research and the truth is

that it has served me well later in my work in

the audiovisual world.

What were your eight years like as

Conservatory in San Lorenzo del Escorial?

In the beginning it was a music school for the

City Council and we slowly started growing.

When I left, there were nearly 300 students.

It was a success, a really lovely time.

How did you end up creating music

for cinema? At the conservatory, I had

a classmate who also liked cinema. We

talked about the topic a lot and started to

take courses with José Nieto. One day the

opportunity arose. I really clicked with the

composer Alberto Iglesias, who composes

all of Almodóvar’s soundtracks, and I started

working as his assistant. I learned a lot and

made several soundtracks for Almodóvar

films with him.

hat experience have you taken from this

cinema work with Pedro Almodóvar? Even

though I wasn’t the composer, I learned a

lot. I was very young and for me it was an

enlightenment. The chance to see how they

worked in the studio, which is why when

they offered me the job, I didn’t hesitate for

a second.

Gracias a este profesor me metí en esta investigación y la verdad es que luego me ha venido muy bien para mi trabajo en el mundo audiovisual. ¿Cómo fueron los ocho años como director del Conservatorio Maestro Alonso en San Lorenzo del Escorial? El inicio fue una escuela de música propuesta al Ayuntamiento y poco a poco fuimos creciendo. Cuando yo me marché tenía cerca de 300 alumnos. Later, you started working on television

series, like El Secreto de Puente Viejo,

Toledo and Acacias 38. How is the creative

process different in cinema and television?

For daily series you simply cannot compose

music for an episode, because there is no

time. It would be impossible. Normally they

send you the script, the bible for the series,

the first 10 episodes, and then the producer

makes his requests.

You work based on these ideas. You start

with the main theme that is already sketched

out and start composing.

In cinema, the music is synchronised to

each sequence. It is totally different. You’ve

got to meet with the director, who makes

suggestions and also tells you what he would

like. Series let you elaborate much more as a

composer, because you haven’t got to be so

tied to the demands of the image. You can

be much freer.

What is your source of inspiration? I always

try to make my music convey emotion and

feelings. The problem with audiovisual

music is that they ask you for a sequence for

an intriguing passage and you can make the

mistake of leaving it empty. My aim when

working is to compose pieces that could be

closed, that you can listen to without the

image and have it still transmit something.

That is my maxim.

What are you working on now? Many

projects have been put on hold because of

the pandemic.

But we have a new television series,

although I can’t say much more about it

yet. And I am also working on a theatre

production, but it’s also on the back burner

until it can premiere at all theatres under

normal conditions. Besides Acacias 38 and,

naturally, my personal compositions, which I

never stop creating.

Nieto. Un día surgió la oportunidad, me captó el compositor Alberto Iglesias, que le compone toda la música a Almodóvar y entré a trabajar como ayudante suyo. Aprendí mucho e hice con él varias películas para Almodóvar.¿Qué experiencia extraes de ese trabajo en cine para Pedro Almodóvar? Aunque no era el compositor aprendí mucho. Yo era muy joven, entonces aquello para mí fue un iluminarme. La oportunidad de poder ver cómo se trabaja en el estudio y por eso cuando me lo ofrecieron no dude ni un segundo. Más tarde llega tu trabajo para series de televisión como El secreto de Puente Viejo, Toledo o Acacias 38. ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo según sea para cine o para televisión? Para las series diarias no puedes componer la música para ese capítulo porque no hay tiempo, es imposible.

Normalmente te mandan el guión, la biblia de la serie, los primeros 10 guiones y después el productor hace sus peticiones. Vas trabajando en base a eso. Partes de temas centrales ya esbozados y a partir de ahí vas componiendo.En el cine la música va sincronizada con cada secuencia. Es totalmente distinto, te tienes que reunir con el director, le haces una propuesta y él también te dice lo que le gustaría. Las series te permiten explayarte mucho más como compositor, porque no tienes que estar tan pendiente de lo que te exige la imagen, sigues una forma más libre.¿Cuál es tu fuente de inspiración? Siempre busco que la música tenga emoción y transmita. El problema en la música audiovisual es que si te piden una secuencia de un fragmento intrigante, puedes caer en el error de hacerla vacía. Mi intención al trabajar es componer obras que podrían ser cerradas, que se podrían escuchar fuera de esa imagen y que transmitan algo. Esa es mi máxima. ¿En qué proyectos estás trabajando? Con la pandemia muchos proyectos se han frenado. Pero estamos con una nueva serie para televisión, pero no puedo decir mucho más aún. Y además estoy con una obra de teatro, pero de momento ha quedado un poco aparcada hasta que se pueda estrenar con tranquilidad en todos los teatros. Aparte de Acacias 38 y por supuesto mis composiciones personales que nunca dejó de hacer.


La seguridad, un valor esencial

La seguridad es condición sine qua non de Sotogrande, de su esencia desde los inicios y de la filosofía de vida de la que forma parte. Vivir en Sotogrande es sinónimo de condiciones positivas y ventajosas en distintos aspectos, siendo uno de los principales la percepción de seguridad de sus habitantes. Un servicio esencial en la urbanización, de ahí que SGplus haya querido hablar con los profesionales que lo hacen posible. El objetivo era conocer más en profundidad el trabajo que realizan y poner en valor los aspectos que los convierten en imprescindibles para el mantenimiento del estatus del que goza esta zona residencial.El Departamento de Seguridad de la E.U.C. Parques de Sotogrande, en coordinación con las Fuerzas y Cuerpos de Seguridad del Estado y Prosegur, son los encargados de la prestación de este servicio privado en su área de competencia, a fin de garantizar la protección de las personas, los bienes y el normal funcionamiento de la urbanización. Para la entidad se trata de “un aspecto de vital importancia y buena parte de la base de su gestión hacia sus vecinos”. Quien vive o conoce Sotogrande sabe que esto es cierto. La primera impresión positiva en este aspecto la tenemos nada


La dotación del servicio de seguridad está ligada a la urbanización desde el principio. Mantenerlo impecable

supone un importante esfuerzo profesional y la adecuación a los nuevos tiempos

más llegar, al querer acceder por cualquiera de sus distintos accesos. Propietarios y visitantes tendrán que pasar el control de las casetas de seguridad, que ofrecen servicio de vigilancia durante las 24 del día, los 365 días de año. Y no es nuevo, esto ha sido así desde que se constituyó el resort bajo precisas y férreas condiciones en este sentido para garantizar no solo la seguridad, sino también la privacidad de la que siempre han gozado los residentes. Como precisan desde la entidad: “la seguridad es uno de los pilares fundamentales de la convivencia en Sotogrande”. Por eso mismo, añaden, “los vecinos no entenderían el modelo de urbanización sin el servicio de seguridad que aporta vigilancia continuada y un contacto directo e inmediato a través de su centro de control, capacitado para atender cualquier requerimiento de seguridad que les pudiera sobrevenir”.Además de la responsabilidad que conlleva este servicio, Parques de Sotogrande se asegura de garantizar su calidad y efectividad con la adecuación de sus

partidas cada año. La EUC invierte “más de un tercio de su presupuesto anual en recursos de seguridad privada, combinando la vigilancia en las entradas y salidas de la urbanización con las patrullas de vigilancia”, que circulan por las calles de Sotogrande. La entidad destaca la importante inversión realizada en los últimos ejercicios en medios

tecnológicos: cámaras de visión nocturna en zonas perimetrales y dispositivos de reconocimiento de matrículas en cruces de viales. Un actualizado equipamiento que ha proporcionado al servicio de seguridad de la urbanización “herramientas eficaces que permiten anticiparse a eventos y coordinar acciones preventivas”.

Conscientes de la importancia de mantener el nivel de eficiencia del servicio prestado, la entidad prioriza entre sus objetivos la necesidad de “conocer y estar al día de cualquier avance tecnológico en materia de seguridad, que pudiera introducirse como mejora en la urbanización, cumpliendo fielmente la normativa legal vigente”.

La fama cobra fuerza. Sotogrande no es solo un destino perfecto para vivir por su ubicación en un entorno natural rico y diverso, la calidad de sus viviendas, la oferta gastronómica o el estilo de vida familiar ligado al deporte. La tranquilidad también es un lujo, por ello la protección aquí es un valor seguro.


Security, an essential value

Security is a condition sine qua non in

Sotogrande, and has been essential since

the start and part of its lifestyle philosophy.

Living in Sotogrande is synonymous with

slews of positive and advantageous living

conditions, and its inhabitants’ perception

of safety is right at the top of the list.

An essential service in this residential

complex, which made SGplus want to talk

to the professionals who make it possible.

The aim is to learn more about the work

they do and share the issues that make them

indispensable for upholding the high status

enjoyed by the luxury residential complex.

The Security Department of EUC Parques de

Sotogrande, in coordination with the State

Security Forces and Prosegur, are in charge

of providing this private service in their

areas of competence, in order to guarantee

the protection of people and property and

that the resort runs absolutely smoothly. For

the organisation, this is a vitally important

issue and a good part of its management

functions for all residents.

Everyone who lives or knows of Sotogrande

knows that this is true. The first positive

impression of security occurs when arriving,

to enter through any of its different gates.


A top-notch security service has been linked to the residential development since the beginning. Keeping it

flawless entails significant professional work and adaptation to new times

Owners and visitors have to pass the guard

booths, which provide security service

24 hours a day, 365 days a year. And this

is not new, as it has been in place since

the resort was established under precise

iron-clad conditions to guarantee not only

security, but also privacy, which residents

have always had. As the organisation states:

‘security is one of the core features of living

in Sotogrande’. For this reason, they add

that ‘the neighbours would not understand

the residential resort’s model without the

security service, which provides continuous

surveillance and direct and immediate

contact via its control centre, trained to

handle any security requirements that pop

up’.

In addition to the responsibility involved

in this service, Parques de Sotogrande

inspects and reviews all its equipment

every year to guarantee their quality and

effectiveness. EUC invests ‘over a third of its

annual budget in private security resources,

combining security guards at entries and

exits with guard patrols,’ who drive through

the streets of Sotogrande. The organisation

stresses the significant investment made in

recent years on technological equipment:

night-vision cameras around the entire

perimeter and number-plate recognition

devices at intersections. State of the art

technology that has given the residential

resort’s security service ‘effective tools

that let us anticipate events and coordinate

preventive actions’.

Aware of the importance of upholding the

efficiency level of the service provided,

among its objectives the organisation

prioritises the need to ‘be informed and

updated on all technological advances

in security that could be introduced as

improvements at the resort, in strict

compliance with legal regulations in force’.

Fame is gaining momentum. Sotogrande is

not only a perfect place to live, due to its

location in a rich and diverse natural setting,

the quality of the homes, the culinary

offering and the family lifestyle linked to

sport. Peace of mind is also a luxury, which

is why protection here is absolutely secure.


Actos solidarios para una Navidad más igualitaria

Si la pandemia viene condicionando distintos aspectos de la vida de todos desde hace meses, no iba a ser menos ahora en Navidad. Este año las acciones solidarias no se han hecho esperar y desde el principio de la crisis sanitaria, numerosos gestos de particulares, empresas y colectivos, asociaciones y ONG´s se vienen sucediendo para ayudar a los más afectados. Pero cuando llegan las fiestas navideñas, el compromiso moral se hace aún más fuerte, a fin de evitar la decepción de los más pequeños.La realidad venía preavisando, despedimos 2020 y damos la bienvenida a 2021 de manera muy distinta a la que veníamos haciéndolo. Y no sólo por la responsabilidad de cumplir con las restricciones que pretenden protegernos de una mayor propagación del virus, sino porque la variación de la actividad social, también hará que gastemos menos y participemos en menos actividades que otros años. A nivel local, nacional e internacional, las asociaciones, el deporte, los empresarios, la música, los organismos oficiales, los medios de comunicación, la educación, las congregaciones religiosas, etc. han puesto en marcha numerosas acciones con las que recoger alimentos y juguetes. El esfuerzo se multiplica por los efectos de la pandemia y porque muchos de los eventos solidarios que se realizaban cada año de manera presencial en Navidad no van a poder celebrarse.Organizaciones no gubernamentales conocidas por todos abanderan sus propias iniciativas, como Cáritas, Cruz Roja, Unicef, Intermón Oxfam, entre otras tantas. Mientras que a nivel local la intención de colaborar también cuenta con opciones en toda la comarca. Un año más, Apoyo Mutuo puso en marcha su tradicional campaña de Navidad, invitando a todos los campogibraltareños a participar. Una exitosa propuesta basada en las cartas escritas por menores de familias con escasos recursos y que el año pasado consiguió que cerca de 500 niños tuvieran un regalo en estas fechas. Por otra parte, el colectivo Running San Roque, con el que participan las

delegaciones de Juventud y Deportes del Ayuntamiento de San Roque, ha organizado la I Carrera Virtual ̀ Ningún Niño sin Juguete´. En San Roque, otra de las opciones de ayudar la proporciona la Iglesia Santa María la Coronada con una campaña solidaria que arrancó con el nuevo año litúrgico y la colocación de la corona con las cuatro velas señalando el camino hacia la Navidad y se centra en la recogida de alimentos. Una acción que queda abierta a asociaciones y grupos fuera del ámbito religioso, como colegios, institutos, asociaciones de vecinos, peñas y otros colectivos. the holidays. This year’s charity drives have

been quick to spring into gear and countless

individuals, companies, groups, associations

and NGOs have been coming to the aid of

the most heavily hit since the start of the

pandemic. But with the holidays upon us this

ethical commitment becomes even stronger

to make sure that little ones have the best

Christmas possible.

The reality of the year gave us fair warning,

and we say goodbye to 2020 and hello to

2021 much differently than we’ve celebrated

in years past. And not only because of the

Y en el mismo municipio, de la mano de otro de los colectivos más activos e implicados en la labor social de ayuda es Nuevo Hogar Betania, que este año ha puesto en marcha `Tu regalo, su sonrisa´. En Algeciras, `Pon tu corazón en una lata´

pretende que los niños de la ciudad y a través de sus colegios hagan una recolecta de alimentos no perecederos envasados en lata, para formar con ellos un árbol gigante para que sus majestades los Reyes Magos los repartan a las familias más necesitadas. Propuesta que se suma a la campaña realizada por Onda Algeciras, con la que este año se ha conseguido recaudar 1.500 juguetes que se entregaron a Cáritas Local. Toda ayuda es poca ante la creciente necesidad.Son muchos los proyectos puestos en marcha y SGplus ha recogido algunos de ellos. Por lo que sin ánimo excluir a ninguno, animamos a contactar con las organizaciones locales para informarse y colaborar.

ACTUALIDAD DESARROLLOS URBANÍSTICOS CURRENT URBAN DEVELOPMENTS

Nuevos proyectos darán respuesta al aumento censal en el Valle del Guadiaro

La corporación municipal de San Roque aprobó recientemente en pleno dos planes urbanísticos que darán respuesta al creciente aumento de la población censada en el municipio, especialmente en el entorno de Sotogrande. Uno de ellos, en fase de aprobación inicial, es la Innovación por Modificación Puntual del P.G.O.U. en el Área de NU-19 Asonor y su Estudio Ambiental Estratégico. Se trata de la intervención en una parcela de 22.325 m2, que estaba calificada como no urbanizable, localizada junto al núcleo residencial de Torreguadiaro y próximo a la entrada del Puerto Deportivo y Sotogrande. El objetivo futuro es posibilitar el desarrollo urbanístico de esta zona dando continuidad urbana y mejorar las conexiones. Según el representante del alcalde en el Valle del Guadiaro, Óscar Ledesma, “toda esta zona tenderá en un futuro a unificarse hasta llegar a la zona de Los Pinos”. La intención y propuesta hasta la fecha es la construcción de 109 viviendas libres y 52 de residencial protegida, así como destinar para sistema general dotacional la parcela y el Bien de Interés Cultural de Torreguadiaro. Todo ello mediante la creación de redes peatonales ligadas a las zonas verdes, la incorporación de un carril bici y aparcamientos. El segundo de los desarrollos aprobado y más inmediato es el de Los Álamos. Un suelo urbanizable ordenado con uso residencial, en categoría turístico, donde se prevé desarrollar un proyecto de urbanización que se aprobó inicialmente en 2008, estando pendiente de subsanación para su aprobación definitiva. Por tanto ahora se confirma la construcción. Sobre una superficie de 45.264,73 m2, 31.378 m2 serán destinados a uso residencial divididos en diferentes parcelas para hacer viviendas plurifamiliares y unifamiliares hasta un total de 84. Para uso viario se destinarán aproximadamente 8.905,59 m2 y para espacio libre, 1.207,02 m2. Esta zona viene registrando desde hace aproximadamente tres años un crecimiento notable de habitantes. Tendencia que según ha podido explicar a SGplus Óscar Ledesma, sigue al alza y provoca el inconveniente de no contar con la suficiente

oferta residencial que dé respuesta a la creciente demanda de viviendas. “En nuestra zona hay un problema con las viviendas, es una realidad. Torreguadiaro lo viene demandando porque va subiendo su número de empadronamientos, es uno de los municipios que más ha crecido en la provincia de Cádiz. Yo creo que podemos hablar en torno a unos 3.000 censados más. Estábamos por debajo de los 30.000 y ahora estamos en más de los 32.000”. Una circunstancia que, según Ledesma, aún se espera que pueda seguir al alza con la entrada del Brexit. “Aquí hay mucha población de Gibraltar, somos uno de los municipios que más gente acoge de Gibraltar”. Por su parte el concejal de Urbanismo, Juan Manuel Ordóñez, declaraba a SGplus que se trata de “un crecimiento para Torreguadiaro y un proyecto muy atractivo para que empiece ya”. Y respecto al problema de la escasez de viviendas, explicaba que “uno de los temas que

estamos trabajando ahora en Emroque es el crecimiento de las barriadas”. Lo vinculaba al atractivo sector turístico existente en torno a Sotogrande, que ha limitado el crecimiento de las distintas barriadas y decía: “por eso estamos trabajando, para que los mismos promotores puedan venir a construir y ampliar las residencias de un nivel más económico y que puedan acceder la población de clase media o baja”. Y añadía: “eso también ayuda a que los trabajadores de los servicios que se generan en torno a Sotogrande se puedan acercar al Valle del Guadiaro. Sotogrande puede generar 3 o 4 empleos directos, por tanto todo lo que se construye en esa zona es importante”. Ante esta falta de viviendas actual, el representante del alcalde en el valle del Guadiaro califica este paso de positivo y beneficioso para la zona. “Es una buena noticia que va más allá, con un previsible desarrollo económico con servicios que tienen que abastecer a esas viviendas.

Evidentemente es desarrollo y crecimiento para el municipio. En definitiva, eso solo puede hacer un bien, que es generar riqueza”. Según los datos facilitados por Urbanismo, la edificación de estos residenciales mantendrá los parámetros necesarios en cuanto a distancia del litoral, dotación de zonas verdes y dominio público y altura. En este sentido, Ledesma comentaba: “yo solo veo aspectos positivos, siempre y cuando se cuide el tipo de construcción con zonas verdes y una edificabilidad no muy alta”. Por su parte Ordóñez concluía explicando: “nosotros intentamos agilizar todos esos procesos, precisamente para que se vuelva a activar la economía este año y que vuelva lo antes posible a los parámetros normales, pero siempre intentando que no se especule con el suelo de San Roque. Queremos que sea atractivo para vivir pero que puedan acceder a él la clase alta y también la clase media y baja”.

New projects will provide solutions to the census increase in the Guadiaro Valley

The municipal corporation of San Roque

recently fully approved two urban plans

that will provide a solution to the growing

increase in population registered in the

municipality, particularly in the area around

Sotogrande.

One of them, which is in its initial approval

phase, is the Innovation by Punctual

Modification of the Land-Use Planning in

the NU-19 Asonor Area and its Strategic

Environmental Study. This is the intervention

on a 22,325 m2 plot, which was classified

as undeveloped, located next to the

Torreguadiaro residential area and near the

entrance to the marina and Sotogrande.

The future objective is to enable the urban

development of this area by providing urban

continuity and improving connections.

According to the mayor of Guadiaro Valley’s

representative, Óscar Ledesma, “in the

future, this whole area will gradually join

together, until it reaches the Los Pinos area.”

The current intention and proposal is

the construction of 109 free homes and

52 protected residential homes, as well

as allocating the plot of land and the

Torreguadiaro Place of Cultural Interest

for the general endowment system. This is

all to be achieved by creating pedestrian

networks linked to green areas, and by

incorporating a bike lane and parking.

The second approved plan, and the most

immediate, is that of Los Alamos. Designated

building land for residential use, in tourist

category, on which a development project

is planned to be developed. This project was

initially approved in 2008, and is pending

final approval. Construction is therefore now

confirmed. A surface area of 45,264.73 m2,

31,378 m2 will be used for residential use

divided into different plots to make multi-

family and single-family homes up to a total

of 84. Approximately 8,905.59 m2 will be

allocated for roads and 1,207.02 m2 for free

space.

This area has recorded a remarkable growth

in population over the last three years

or so. This trend, which Óscar Ledesma

was able to explain to SGplus, is still on

the rise and has the disadvantage of not

having enough residential supply to meet

the growing demand for housing. “In our

area there is a problem with housing, it is a

reality. Torreguadiaro has been crying out

for it because the number of registrations is

increasing, it is one of the municipalities that

has grown the most in the province of Cadiz.

I think we may be talking about 3,000 more

census registrants. We were under 30,000

and now we are over 32,000.” According to

Ledesma, this is still expected to continue

to rise with the arrival of Brexit. “There are

many people here from Gibraltar, we are

one of the municipalities with the most

inhabitants from Gibraltar”.

The Councillor for Urban Planning, Juan

Manuel Ordóñez, explained to SGplus

that this is “growth for Torreguadiaro and

a very attractive project to start now”.

And with regards to the housing shortage

problem, he explained that “one of the

issues we are working on now in Emroque

is growing the neighbourhoods.” He linked

it to the attractive tourist sector around

Sotogrande, which has limited the growth

of the different neighbourhoods and said:

“that’s why we are working on it, so that the

same developers can come and build and

expand the residences at a lower price and

so that the middle or lower class population

can afford them”. Moreover, he added: “this

also helps workers in the services emerging

around Sotogrande to get closer to the

Guadiaro Valley. Sotogrande can generate 3

or 4 direct jobs, therefore everything that is

built in that area is important.”

Given this current shortage of housing, the

mayor of Guadiaro Valley’s representative

describes this step as positive and beneficial

for the area. “This is good news that goes one

step further, with a foreseeable economic

development with services that must supply

these homes. Obviously, it is development

and growth for the municipality. Ultimately,

that can only lead to one positive, which is

generating wealth.”

According to the data provided by Urbanism,

the construction of these residential areas

will maintain the necessary parameters in

terms of distance from the coast, provision

of green areas and public domain and

height. In this sense, Ledesma commented:

“I only see positives, as long as the type of

construction with green areas and a not very

high constructability is ensured.” Ordóñez

concluded by explaining: “we are trying to

speed up all these processes, precisely so

that the economy is reactivated this year

and returns to normal conditions as soon as

possible, but always ensuring that there is

no speculation about the land in San Roque.

We want it to be attractive to live in but to

be affordable to the upper class as well as to

the middle and lower classes.”

La historia que hemos estudiado y la que se ha transmitido generación tras generación es el resultado de la construcción de un mundo en el que muchas mujeres, a través de distintos estamentos sociales y profesiones han desempeñado un papel esencial, pero muchas veces no reconocido. Un dilema del que emergen colectivos como el de Mujeres Invisibles. Una asociación fundada por Isabel Beneroso y Sara Delgado en 2018 que ellas definen como “asociación cultural y educativa que trabaja y lucha por hacer visible a mujeres, que a pesar de ser relegadas, silenciadas o ignoradas dejaron huella en la historia, y por resaltar esos derechos que están ahí ocultos”. Sobre la convicción de que la educación es la base de todo, ambas defienden su trabajo sin ánimo de reivindicar, sino de poner en valor la parte histórica que ellas creen que falta en la historia universal. “No pretendemos encabezar nada sino simplemente poner en valor a esas mujeres que se merecen estar al mismo nivel que los hombres y que han aportado a la sociedad para el Estado de Bienestar”, concretaba Isabel. No pretenden tirar del pasado para ponerlo en el futuro, sino contar lo que estas mujeres vivieron sin carga de victimismo. “Somos la mitad de la sociedad y de la historia y, sin embargo, no estamos en la mitad de la historia que se enseña. De ahí lo de invisible”, concretaba Isabel. La manera en que desde el principio estas mujeres concibieron llevar a la práctica este proyecto fue a través de la dramatización. Y así, con la colaboración de distintas entidades

privadas, la participación desinteresada de mujeres anónimas y un profundo trabajo de investigación, Mujeres Invisibles puso en marcha escenificaciones teatrales, en las que Sara se encarga de dirigir y dar voz al aspecto musical. Mujeres Invisibles revives the times and people forgotten by history

The history we’ve studied and that has been

passed on through the generations is the

result of constructing a world vision in which

many women have played a crucial role, at

different levels of society and in different

professions, although they are often not

recognised. A dilemma that has led to the

appearance of groups like Mujeres Invisibles

(Invisible Women).

This association was founded in 2018 by Isabel

Beneroso and Sara Delgado. They define it

as a ‘cultural and educational association

that works to give women visibility who –

despite being relegated, silenced or ignored

– left their mark on history, and to stress

the rights that are hidden there’. On their

conviction that education is the foundation

for everything, they defend their non-profit

work of bringing women into the spotlight,

valuing the history they believe is missing

in our universal history. ‘Our intention is not

to lead anything, but simply to value these

women who deserve to be at the same level

as men, and who have contributed to society

for the welfare state,’ specified Isabel. They

don’t intend to take from the past to put it in

the future, but simply to tell these women’s

stories without any victim mentality. ‘We

are half of society and half of history but,

despite that, we are not half of the history

that is taught. That is why women are

invisible,’ clarified Isabel.

The way that these women conceived of

putting this project into practice was through

dramatisation. Thus, with the collaboration

of different private institutions, the selfless

a una ONG diferente. En 2018, su primera aportación fue destinada a la asociación Bandera Rosa y en 2019, al proyecto Por una Sonrisa. Ambos relacionados en la lucha contra el cáncer. La primera vez que llevaron a la realidad su idea fue en el Kursaal de Algeciras. Las mujeres salían del público y contaban su historia, mientras las transiciones corrían a cargo de la música, que además situaba al público en cada época histórica. Según cuentan las fundadoras de esta iniciativa tuvieron una gran aceptación y tras llevarlo por asociaciones y otras localidades, como Los Barrios o San Roque, al año siguiente se plantearon hacerlo en teatros. Y de nuevo el éxito de la iniciativa se repitió en el teatro Florida de Algeciras y después en San Roque. Pero la pandemia se cruzó en su camino, como en el de tantos. Y, sin dejar de lado el sentido de sus orígenes, pusieron en marcha la web de Mujeres Invisibles y se han posicionado en redes

and gives voice to the music. The aim is

therefore twofold, as all money collected

is donated to a different NGO each time.

In 2018, their first donation went to the

association Bandera Rosa and, in 2019,

to the project Por una Sonrisa. Both are

involved in the fight against cancer.

The first time their idea became real was

at Kursaal in Algeciras. Women came out

of the audience and told their stories, while

the transitions were done with music, which

also placed the audience in each historic era.

As the founders of this initiative recounted,

they were very popular and, after taking

the show to associations and other cities,

including Los Barrios and San Roque, they

decided to take it to theatres the following

year. And, once again, the initiative met

with great success at Florida Theatre in

Algeciras and then in San Roque. But the

pandemic crossed their path, like so many

others. And, never forgetting their original

goals and origins, they started up a website

for Mujeres Invisibles and have launched on

social media, to keep up their educational

function.

Wanting everything to get back to normal,

Isabel and Sara are already thinking about

their next work. ‘We’ve got new characters

and music in mind and, when we can get on

stage in 2021, we want to take women to

the House of Bernarda Alba. There will be

five historic women facing Bernarda Alba,

because we women often are participants in

the invisibility of other women.’

Meanwhile, Isabel and Sara are keeping their

project active for cultural and charity ideals,

encouraging new sectors to learn about

Mujeres Invisibles. They include photography,

with the collaboration of Mamen Fuertes;

painting, with illustrator Mercedes Palacio;

dance with Virginia Herrera and Mercedes

Alcalá; and cuisine, with the creation of two

new dishes by Mesón El Copo bearing the

association’s name.

Lo anticipábamos en este medio en ediciones anteriores, Camilla y Firouz FarmanFarmaian llegaron a Sotogrande y han dado un giro a la perspectiva artística en la zona y de cara al resto del mundo. Y lo hacen a través de dos soportes que permiten dar continuidad a la nueva corriente de galeristas, haciendo posible que el arte llegue a cualquier rincón del planeta en este tiempo de pandemia. Por un lado ponen en marcha Nouvelle Vague Artspaces (NVA), una plataforma creativa evolutiva que engloba proyectos curatoriales físicos y digitales, exposiciones emergentes nómadas de todo el mundo. Y por otro lado PATIOO, un monorrom conceptual de alto perfil ubicado en Sotogrande, con el que consiguen traer el arte experiencial al sur de Europa. Con el precedente de migración digital iniciado por Art Basel el pasado mes de marzo, Camilla y Firouz traen la primera serie OVR (del inglés online viewing room, sala de visualización en línea) presentando la exposición individual Geometry of the Ruins (Geometría de las Ruinas) de Frédéric Atlan. La muestra estará disponible en nouvellevagueartspaces.com hasta el 25 de enero de 2021. El artista parisino se basa en las huellas de su proceso de producción, como material útil de su trabajo. Y consigue proponer “operaciones” en el sentido quirúrgico y matemático, sumando y restando el material al lienzo mediante estampación-desgarro. Según Atlan, “Geometría de las

ruinas explora la profundidad material de la pintura. Lienzos reutilizados pegados, apilados y desgarrados pieza a pieza, dejando huellas, ruinas, paisajes de textura. Pátinas de colores bajo un brillo de pegamento. Lo que queda en el cuadro es materialidad irrevocable”.Frédéric Atlan es un pintor, fotógrafo y camarógrafo fascinado por los puntos de intersección que unen la abstracción y la representación. Figura central de la escena del arte alternativo parisino desde finales de la década de 1990 y ex activista del arte okupa de París, también conocido como artista callejero y músico experimental. Atlan es un artista contemporáneo polifacético, que explora la materia, el sonido, lo subterráneo, los campos, los páramos y los paisajes urbanos cuestionando los excesos de la actividad humana creando vocabularios visuales con elementos de la naturaleza y los seres vivos. Su práctica abarca desde la pintura abstracta hasta el uso de fotografía, video, sonido y 3D. El parisino estuvo a bordo del programa de residencia de artistas de Marbella de verano de 2019 de NVA y pasó seis semanas trabajando en una exposición multiformato (video-sonido-impresión-pintura), que se inauguró en septiembre de 2019 en el espacio artístico de Marbella. La cercanía entre el cofundador de la NVA, Firouz Farman Farmaian y el artista contemporáneo Frédéric Atlan viene de años atrás durante su estancia en París, donde ambos compartieron un espacio de

We already had a teaser in previous editions

of our magazine. Camilla and Firouz

FarmanFarmaian came to Sotogrande and

have turned the region’s artistic perspective

on its head, aimed for the rest of the world.

And they do it via two mediums that give

continuity to new gallery trends, making it

possible for art to reach everywhere on the

planet during these pandemic days.

On the one hand, they opened Nouvelle

Vague ArtSpaces (NVA), an evolving

creative platform that encompasses both

physical and digital curatorial projects,

nomadic exhibitions popping up round the

world. And, on the other, PATIOO, a high-

profile conceptual monoroom located in

Sotogrande, bringing experiential art to

southern Europe. With the digital migration

precedent started by Art Basel in March,

Camilla and Firouz bring us the first OVR

(online viewing room) series, presenting

the solo exhibition, Geometry of Ruins, by

Frédéric Atlan. The show will be available

at nouvellevagueartspaces.com until 25

January 2021.

The Parisian artist centres on the imprints

of his production process as useful material

for his work. And he proposes ‘operations’

in both the surgical and mathematical sense,

adding and removing material from the

canvas by engraving and tearing. According

to Atlan, ‘Geometry of Ruins explores the

material depths of painting. Repurposed

canvases, glued, stacked and ripped up

piece by piece, leaving remnants, ruins and

textural landscapes. Patinas of colours under

the shine of glue. What remains on the piece

is irrevocable materiality.’

NVA and digital migration put the spotlight on Frédéric Atlan

Hasta el 17 de diciembre se ha podido ver en PATIOO y mediante cita previa la exposición de la artista noruega Anne Katrine Senstad y su instalación inmersiva The Sensory Chamber. Frédéric Atlan is a painter, photographer

and cameraman who is fascinated by the

point where abstraction and representation

intersect. A main character in the Parisian

alternative art scene since the end of the

1990s and former activist in squatter art

in Paris, he is also well-known as a street

artist and experimental artist. Atlan is a

multifaceted contemporary creator who

explores matter, sound, the underground,

fields, wastelands and urban landscapes,

questioning the excesses of human activity,

creating visual vocabularies with objects

from nature and living beings. His practice

ranges from abstract painting to using

photography, video, sound and 3D.

The Parisian was part of the NVA artist

residence programme in summer 2019

in Marbella and spent six weeks working

on a multiple format exhibition (video-

sound-printing-painting) that opened in

September 2019 at the Marbella art venue.

The closeness between the NVA co-founder,

Firouz FarmanFarmaian and contemporary

artist Frédéric Atlan started years ago when

they were both in Paris, where they shared a

studio for a while.

Immersed in the Covid-19 pandemic, a

new world is opening up for art galleries

and collectors. With this new medium for

publicising and disseminating art, distances

are slashed and the inconvenience of

travelling to galleries dissipates. Thus,

and fosters democratisation by removing

the intimidation factor many people feel

Un nuevo camino se abre paso en la historia de San Roque Club. Uno de los clubes de golf más emblemáticos del municipio volvía a abrir sus puertas según lo previsto el 5 de diciembre. En menos de un año y a pesar de las dificultades añadidas ocasionadas por la pandemia, se ha completado el proyecto de remodelación integral liderado por su presidente Stephen Dundas. Casi treinta años después de su constitución, San Roque Club se renueva para volver a estar en la cúspide de los clubes de golf europeos y sin perder un ápice de su identidad y prestigio. El pronóstico de modernización y adecuación a los nuevos tiempos de la nueva presidencia ya es una realidad, gracias a un intenso trabajo de reforma en el que se ha respetado y protegido el entorno natural. Tras este gran paso SGplus ha querido hablar con Stephen Dundas sobre cómo ha sido todo el proceso. “Ha sido una gran experiencia. He aprendido mucho en este proyecto. He conocido a grandes personas, grandes profesionales apasionados por su trabajo. Por supuesto, con la pandemia se nos han presentado algunos retos, como conseguir las entregas de materiales a tiempo o bien el número restringido de trabajadores durante el confinamiento, pero todo el equipo se mantuvo muy positivo y hemos logrado mucho en menos de un año”, explicaba el presidente.La mayor parte del esfuerzo ha estado focalizado en el Old Course, concretamente en el sistema de drenaje y la sostenibilidad. “El campo de golf solía estar muy húmedo, pero ahora será uno de los más firmes de España”, comentaba Dundas. Se ha instalado el Better Billy Bunker, lo que garantiza la inexistencia de charcos futuros en los bunkers. Además se han reducido 18 hectáreas de césped mantenido, que han sido reemplazado con mantillo. “La combinación de todo ello significa que nuestro equipo de mantenimiento dedicará más tiempo a los detalles y gastaremos mucho menos en agua, productos químicos y fertilizantes”. De esta manera el presidente explicaba su real compromiso con un futuro sostenible y favorable con el medio ambiente y en lo que respecta al gasto económico. “Podremos mantener una


alta calidad en estos aspectos”, aclaraba. Con este nuevo enfoque, socios veteranos y nuevos se van a encontrar con “un campo de golf en el que disfrutarán jugando, donde les gustaría jugar todos los días en un ambiente amigable y con un gran servicio. Cuando llegamos por primera vez al club, hablamos de ofrecerles a los socios un campo y un club del que sentirse orgullosos. Y creo que lo hemos logrado”, contaba satisfecho el presidente.Durante los meses que han durado los trabajos y ante la inminente reapertura, la presidencia del club explica que los socios

han mostrado un gran entusiasmo con el proyecto, deseosos de iniciar este nuevo capítulo en la historia de San Roque Club. Y ante tal perspectiva, desde septiembre de 2019 se han sumado 99 socios nuevos, lo que ahora suman un total de 420. “Creemos que para diciembre de 2021 estaremos en unos 500 socios”, vaticina el presidente. Junto con la renovación del Old Course, el proyecto de Dundas también contemplaba la remodelación y modernización de la casa club y la academia de golf. Pero otra ambiciosa actuación en el organigrama del club es la construcción de un hotel

estilo boutique de 33 habitaciones, cuya obra comenzará en mayo de 2021 y se prevé terminar en el verano de 2023. Los apartamentos, que estarán listos en mayo de 2021 y 5 villas para alquilar, una de las cuales ya está terminada. La nueva etapa de San Roque Club ya es una realidad. Nuevos enfoques conviven con el sentir y la filosofía de un veterano que ha ganado en calidad y servicios. En palabras de Stephen Dundas: “ofrecemos un gran producto con un gran servicio a buen precio. Si hacemos esto, todo lo demás se solucionará por sí solo”.

A new road is opening up in the history of the

San Roque Club. One of the municipality’s

most iconic golf clubs opens its doors again,

as planned, on 5 December. In less than

one year and despite the added difficulties

caused by the pandemic, the comprehensive

remodelling project led by its president

Stephen Dundas has been completed.

Nearly 30 years after it was established, the

San Roque Club renews itself to once again

be at the very summit of European golf

clubs, without losing an iota of its identity

or prestige. The prognosis to modernise and

adapt to new times by the new presidency

is now a reality, thanks to intensive reform

works that have respected and protected

the natural environment.

After this big step forward, SGplus wanted

to talk to Stephen Dundas about what the

process was like. ‘It was a great experience.

I’ve learned a lot with this project. I met

great people, great professionals, who are

passionate about their work. Of course,

with the pandemic we have faced several

challenges, such as how to get materials

delivered on time and the restricted number

of workers during confinement, but the

entire team remained extremely positive

and we achieved a lot in less than one year,’

explained the president.

The largest part of the work was centred on

the Old Course, specifically on its drainage

system and sustainability. ‘The golf course

used to be very damp, but it will now

be one of the firmest in Spain,’ Dundas

commented. A Better Billy Bunker was

installed, which guarantees that there will

be no puddles in the bunkers in the future.

Further, maintained lawn was reduced

by 18 hectares, replaced with mulch. ‘The

combination of all these items means that

our maintenance team will spend more time

on details and we will spend much less on

water, chemical products and fertilisers.’

This is how the president explained their real

commitment to a sustainable future that is

environmentally friendly, while lowering

financial expenditures. ‘We will be able to

uphold the highest quality for these issues,’

he stated. With this new focus, veteran and

new members will find ‘a golf course they

will love playing on, where they will want

to play every day in a friendly setting with

great service. When we arrived at the club

for the first time, we talked about offering

members a course and a club they would be

proud of. And I think we’ve achieved it,’ the

president remarked with satisfaction.

During the months that the works were

underway, and faced with imminent

reopening, the club president explained that

members were very enthusiastic about the

project, ready to embark on this new chapter

in the history of the San Roque Club. And

with this prospect, 99 new members have

joined since September 2019, with members

now totalling 420. ‘We believe we will have

some 500 members by December 2021,’ the

president predicted.

Along with revamping the Old Course,

Dundas’s project also planned to remodel

and modernise the clubhouse and golf

academy. But another ambitious action in

the club’s planning is the construction of a

33-room boutique hotel, whose construction

will start in May 2021 and should finish in

summer 2023. The apartments will be ready

in May 2021, as well as five villas, one of

which is already finished.

The new era of the San Roque Club is now a

reality. New focuses live harmoniously with

the feeling and philosophy of an old hand

that has gained both quality and services.

In the words of Stephen Dundas: ‘We offer

a great product and great service at good

prices. If we do all this, everything else will

resolve itself.’


Óscar Higuera, una carrera de superación sobre dos ruedas

Hace un mes se traía de Cartagena el liderazgo como campeón de España de Ciclismo Adaptado en Carretera 2020 en la prueba contrarreloj. Pero no es lo único que ha ganado esta temporada Óscar Higuera, con confinamiento de por medio y entrenando para competiciones cuya celebración no se sabía hasta el último momento. En uno de sus escasos días de descanso, el de origen bilbaíno hablaba con SGplus sobre los esfuerzos que supone esta pasión, que lo mantiene sobre dos ruedas desde que tenía uso de razón. A pesar de los obstáculos en el camino con dos accidentes importantes que han marcado su carrera, la constancia y el esfuerzo se han mantenido intactos. Óscar conoce a la perfección la disciplina deportiva con la que ha crecido viendo a sus abuelos y a su padre practicar a nivel semiprofesional. Pero a él le gusta la competición y a día de hoy puede presumir de perder la cuenta a la hora de contar los logros conseguidos tanto en pista como en carretera. La carrera de Óscar apuntaba alto desde joven, pero un accidente de moto a los 19 años lo bajó de la bicicleta. Y a los 22 empezó a competir en su otra gran pasión: el motociclismo. “Empecé como un hobby y luego fui corriendo cada vez un poco más a nivel semiprofesional y lo compatibilizaba con el trabajo”, explicaba el deportista. Corrió en todas las modalidades hasta que a los 36 años, otro accidente lo volvió a alejar de las competiciones. “El último accidente fue el que me dejó bastante fastidiado ya y corría peligro por el tema de que tengo mucho metal en las piernas y no puedo tener un accidente a gran velocidad”, contaba al respecto. Empezaba ahí un nuevo y duro paréntesis de recuperación, que finalmente lo llevaría a reencontrarse de nuevo con la bicicleta. El segundo accidente le hizo estar en silla de ruedas pero, como él dice: “no pensé que me podía quedar ahí. Lo que hacía cada día era trabajar y trabajar y si me mandaban una hora de ejercicio, yo hacía dos. Te centras tanto en recuperarte, que no te das cuenta de lo que realmente tienes y luego poco a poco te vas adaptando”. Viviendo el día a día Óscar llegó a los 39 años al ciclismo adaptado, su nueva oportunidad.

He came back from Cartagena one month

ago as the Spanish champion in the 2020

Road Para-Cycling timed trial. But it’s not

the only prize Óscar Higuera has won this

season, with confinement in the middle and

training for competitions for which nobody

knew if they would be held until the last

minute.

In one of his few days off, this man from

Bilbao talked to SGplus about the work

involved in his passion for two wheeled

racing, which he has had since he could

walk. Despite the obstacles along the road,

with two major accidents that have turned

his career upside down, perseverance and

hard work have been constants.

Óscar knows this sport discipline inside out,

as he grew up watching his grandfathers

and father practice semi-professionally.

However, he loves competition and today

can boast of having lost count of his

achievements, both on the track and on the

road. Óscar’s career was set to be stellar from

a young age, although a motorbike accident

when he was 19 represented a big setback.

And at 22 years old, he started competing

in his other great passion: motorcycling. ‘It

started as a hobby and then I started racing

more and more at a semi-professional level,

and made it compatible with working.’ He

raced in all disciplines until, when he was

36, another accident took him away from

competing again. ‘The last accident messed

me up a lot and I was running a risk because

I have a lot of metal in my legs and I can’t

have a high-speed accident,’ he told us.

He thus started another tough break

focused on recovering, which led him back

to the bicycle again. The second accident

put him in a wheelchair, but as he says: ‘I

didn’t think I could stay in a chair. What I

did was work and work and if they told me

to do one hour of exercise, I did two. You

concentrate so much on recovering that you

don’t realise what you’ve really got and you

slowly start adapting.’ Living day by day,

Óscar found para-cycling when he was 39,

his new opportunity.

Since them, training occupies most of

his time. Elite sport and international

competition are what’s on his schedule.

A strict diet and constant training almost

without time off. ‘I’ve taken 20 days off in

two years,’ he told us. Luckily, the district has

lots of routes that are great for practicing

his discipline and training on roads, which

he generally does towards Jimena, Gaucín,

Casares, direction Ronda. And when he’s

En un año lleno de cambios de planes, el principal objetivo de Óscar Higuera es poder llegar a los Juegos Olímpicos. “Me ha servido de motivación para todo”, explicaba. “Cuando tuve la oportunidad antes de mi accidente, no pude ir. Así que ahora son los Juegos Paralímpicos de Tokio”. Pero antes tiene otras citas importantes, que son el Mundial de Carretera en Portugal y el de Pista en Brasil. Él lo tiene claro: “hay que hacerlo bien en los dos e intentar mejorar el quinto puesto que logré el año pasado. No es fácil, pero cada día estoy más cerca”.

In a year full of changed plans, Óscar

Higuera’s main goal now is to reach the

Olympics. ‘It has been my motivation for

everything,’ he explained. ‘When I had the

chance before my accident, I couldn’t go.

So now it’s the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.’

But first he has other important events, like

the World Road Paracycling championships

in Portugal and Track in Brazil. His mind

is set: ‘I have to do well at both and try to

improve the fifth place I won last year. It’s

not easy, but I am closer every day.’

fantastic work that these women have done

for years, although this year the scarcity of

religious callings and, thus, a lower number

of women becoming nuns, can be added

to the inconveniences unleashed by the

pandemic.

Reduced mobility and the impossibility

of holding mass-attended events have

prevented the organisation of street markets

and fairs that tended to bring together the

wide range of Christmas sweets from the

different towns of Cadiz where the nuns

continue their work.

Even so, we can find these legendary

delights throughout the province of Cadiz.

Tras meses de reforma en todas sus instalaciones y más especialmente en el Old Course, San Roque Club daba la bienvenida a sus socios con la celebración de un torneo y un almuerzo posterior.En total, 82 socios disfrutaron de una jornada de juego con greenes más rápidos, calles más anchas y unas vistas espectaculares. Warm welcome from members at the reopening

The 5th of December 2020, the day that

The San Roque Club was reborn. After the

big renovation of all the facilities, The San

Roque Club opened its doors to its members

for the soft opening.

Eighty two members enjoyed a the

challenges of the very fast greens, the wider

fairways and some spectacular views. After

9 holes all players sampled some authentic

Italian pizza from the new pizza oven and

some antipasti, not to mention some drinks.

The feedback from the members was

extremely positive regarding all the facilities

but in particular the newly renovated Old

Course.

We should not miss an opportunity to

congratulate the new Owners and Stephen

Dundas and his Team for what they have

achieved… the commitment, the gate to

gate service and the attention to detail has

resulted in a fantastic end product, We look

ANIMAL WORLD SOTOGRANDE CAT CARE SOCIETY

SoCCS, Sotogrande Royal Golf Club and Trocadero united to control feline colonies

The search for people’s most human side

is often sought in the relationships they

have with each other, but our relationship

with animals is just as important. Raising

awareness about street animals is a reality

in which there is still much to do, although

there have been significant advances.

The Sotogrande Royal Golf Club recently

joined the fight to change awareness at

the hands of SoCCS (Sotogrande Cat

Care Society), a non-profit organisation

focused on working with local businesses

and communities, as well as with local

authorities when necessary. Its aim is to

help street cats and control the mass

reproduction of feline communities, to

prevent later problems in the area. A

situation that some – as explained by one

of the association’s spokespersons, Ángela

López – erroneously try to resolve by

poisoning.

To this end, the method implemented by

SoCCS that has been put into practice at

the golf club with street cats in colonies

is what is known as TNR, or trap-neuter-

return. Organisation members are the ones

who voluntarily trap the cats. ‘A humane

and effective method. The only way that has

been found to control feline reproduction

is by neutering them. It also means they are

returned to the streets calmer and much

healthier,’ Ángela explained to SGplus.

cats in special cages, so that they won’t

suffer, then take them to the collaborating

veterinarians at Vetpoint and Javican.

After arriving at the vets, they are neutered

and, if any problem, injury or disease is

detected, they are treated and cured.

‘We find some of them in extremely bad

condition, with severe and advanced

injuries, malnourished… Because their lives

on the street are extraordinarily difficult,’

said Ángela. Finally, they are released at

the same place they were trapped, but now

marked with a cut on their ears to identify

them as sterile, which will help the feline

population drop over time.

Treatment costs and the later feeding

of the communities is regularly done

by the association, although they also

receive donations from organisations

and companies that selflessly make

contributions. This last issue is fundamental

and also a priority for SoCCS, whose

La búsqueda del aspecto más humano de las personas a menudo se busca en las relaciones entre ellas mismas, pero tan importante es esto como la relación del ser humano con los animales. La sensibilización respecto a los animales callejeros es una realidad en la que, aunque se ha avanzado notablemente, aún queda mucho por hacer. El Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande se ha sumado recientemente a la lucha por el cambio de conciencia de la mano de SoCCS (Sotogrande Cat Care Society), una asociación sin ánimo de lucro enfocada en el trabajo con empresas y comunidades del entorno, así como con las autoridades locales cuando así lo requieren, con el fin de ayudar a los gatos callejeros y controlar la reproducción masiva de las comunidades felinas, para evitar una posterior problemática con el entorno. Una situación que algunos, como explicaba una de las vocales de la asociación, Ángela López, pretenden solucionar erróneamente con el envenenamiento. Para ello, el método que implementa SoCCS y que ha sido puesto en práctica en el RCGS es el denominado CES, que consiste en la captura, esterilización y suelta de gatos callejeros establecidos en colonias. Los miembros de la organización son los que de manera voluntaria capturan a los gatos. “Un método humano y efectivo. La única manera que se ha encontrado de controlar la reproducción felina es mediante la esterilización. Además, cuando esto se hace se vuelven más calmados y de alguna manera la salud de ellos mejora muchísimo”, explicaba Ángela a SGplus. Los miembros de SoCCS, de manera voluntaria, son los encargados de realizar las capturas con jaulas especiales, sin hacerlos sufrir y llevarlos a los veterinarios colaboradores Vetpoint y Javican. Una vez allí se procede a la esterilización y si detectan algún problema, lesión o enfermedad se les trata y se les cura. “Algunos nos los encontramos muy mal, con graves y avanzadas lesiones, malnutridos… Porque la vida de ellos en la calle es sumamente difícil”, contaba Ángela al respecto. Finalmente la suelta se realiza en el mismo lugar en que fueron

capturados, pero ahora marcados con un corte en la oreja para identificarlos como estériles, ayudando a que la población felina se reduzca en el tiempo. Los costes de los tratamientos y la posterior alimentación de las comunidades lo asume habitualmente la asociación, también contando con las donaciones de entidades y empresas que facilitan su aportación desinteresada. Este último aspecto es fundamental y también prioritario para SoCCS, cuyos asociados se encargan de dar de comer a colonias ya esterilizadas y controladas, asegurándose de que estén sanos. Lo que a su vez repercute en que los gatos actúen evitando plagas de ratas y ratones o que se utilice veneno, que resulta perjudicial tanto para los animales como con el medio ambiente. Desde que Valerie Schultz puso en marcha la asociación hace unos ocho años, SoCCS ha castrado a más de 300 gatos. En la actualidad cuida a más de 200 gatos en ocho colonias repartidas entre Sotogrande, Torreguadiaro y Guadiaro. SoCCS desea destacar el compromiso de Trocadero con esta realidad, donde ya se llevó a cabo el procedimiento CES y del Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande, donde se ha realizado recientemente. “Ha sido una idea renovadora que el director del club, Agustín Mazarrasa, haya sido tan amable de facilitar la labor, porque él es consciente de la problemática. present, it cares for more than 200 cats

in eight colonies located in Sotogrande,

Torreguadiaro and Guadiaro.

SoCCS wants to highlight Trocadero’s

commitment to their work, where they

already completed the TNR process, and

the Sotogrande Royal Golf Club, where they

recently did it. ‘It was a refreshing change

and idea that the club’s director, Agustín

Mazarrasa, has been nice enough to let us

do, as he is well-aware of the problem. He is

a truly conscious and humane person with

a sense of ethics that made him open to

the idea. Like the managers of Trocadero,’

explained Ángela.

The association thus works with the

important task of raising awareness and

the dream of having a place to relocate the

cats in the future. ‘To us, this is a big step

forward and represents a great example to

others. The idea is not to hurt them, but the

complete opposite, to protect them, and

we are very pleased.’

resident Jesús García was the lucky one,

after participating in the raffle that the

supermarket chain carried out between 19th

and 30th October.

This prize is part of the ‘La más lista de la

compra’ promotion, which Euromadi has

carried out across Spain and in which Ruiz
